The author states that Design Thinking developed from "Engineering, Architecture and Business". This is plain wrong! Please have a closer look at the word 'Design' in the term and consider some research into the history of methodologies and terms before publishing inaccurate information. The methodology obviously derived from the field of Design and its creative problem solving methods, a user-centered approach, prototyping and visualization practices while often dealing with ill-defined problems or briefings. Just look up what IDEO and Tom Kelley do (or better used to do) for a living.

Design Sprint, LeanUX, Design Thinking existed before the production of this video. Why make it sound like IBM invented it? Recognize the inovators in the design space who made all this possible! It's so cheap to slap your name in front of it.

IBM have been a long time creative swiper! Their consultancy division is very well respected at amazingly senior levels as well

What differentiates Design Thinking with Lean being both focusing on the customer requirements?

Lean tells you how to refine a concept to a product/service - Design Thinking tells you which concept to refine. Without it, you can spend a lot of time refining something that doesn't meet the customer's needs, which isn't very lean.

Design Thinking about Business and about life is so freeing, opens up so many possibilities. And then explore and test in baby steps to see what you can create in life!

great piece of work guys

Well, I’m sure you guys are glad Ideo is such a great company that they want people to take design thinking and run with it. Just never saw anyone out there own name in front of it like this. Never the less a couple key components are missing. Low fidelity prototyping is key to a successful design thinking approach. If you spend all your time building a prototype just to find out you have to change it completely. That is a failure that can be mitigated by utilizing low fidelity prototyping.

omg it helps to give me a solution! I'm fresh graduate graphic designer, and I applied as a graphic designer in huge company. Surprisingly, they have no strong creative designer to manage their design strategy, and as a new employee (idk why they only requirement me! I have no work experience, damn) I got a huge responsibility for whole company. it's a good chance to show my ability, but I got anxiety and I'm freak out. I have no Idea what I have to do, since the owner depends on me. But then I learned about design thinking. It helps me find solutions for company and makes me more confidence. Thanks God.

Is design thinking part of an overall design process, or is it a separate entity, like web design, print design, typeface design etc…?
Ben Kamakorewa (1 month ago)
its a fancy term for "the process of problem solving" - at the end of design thinking you may not have solved anything, but you explored the probabilities of each idea. So yes I believe the traditional graphic designer has always been doing this forever, thus they (Stanford) coined the term "Design Thinking".

oh..interesting. Thank you :D
Thais Suzuki (1 year ago)
chuskster companies weren't putting the clients needs and wants in first place, but focusing more in the business and production itself

+vpanwar thanx!!! :)

Sure there are many such tools.. good to use what fits in one's context. My comment was more about the semantics of design thinking approach
Diana Alvarado Solano (1 year ago)
vpanwar got it! but I think is also important the approach to the problem; e.g., using tools as Pareto's charts... & , of course, having the Voice-of-Client (VOC) as a cluster for the solution implementation...
NoFavours (1 year ago)
Irrespective of Parrot's law, design thinking at its core is about problem solving - in a non conventional way. Whether it is 20 or 50 or 80%, doesn't matter. If you are solving user's problems, using an iterative UCD method, you are doing design thinking.
Diana Alvarado Solano (1 year ago)
I think they called "wow factor" not so-realistic ideas... You must focus on the "easy apples" <- very effective with low resources actions... the 20/100 of the causes of the 80/100 problems that Pareto's law models...

Hello, I would like to create educational videos like this. May I ask what software was used—I currently have adobe after affects and wanted to know if that was a good option for me. Thank you

I find it hilarious that the company "Ideo" that spear headed this waffle is now out of the loop. Makes me wonder whats the next TREND to emerge???  IBM may have hundreds of designers but you know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen.....mmmmmm, but how many of them have vision? I guess we will have to see what comes from this.... If anything!!!

What we call IBM Design Thinking is actually the Hills, Sponsor Users and Playbacks, which IBM's way to try to scale all the best practices from both worlds.
