Pro-Ject Essential III - a perfect example of bad product design.

31 ratings | 1989 views
The plexiglass cover pushes the counterweight forward, adjusting the tracking force, in our case to 2.4 grams. For heavier cartridges, a separate counterweight (75g vs the 65g original) is needed, which is an optional extra sold separately.

I am thinking of buying the Project Essential 3 SB, but this vid has put me off. I notice from the comments that this video is relating to a different cartridge from the one supplied. Does anyone know if the problem still happens if you just use the original supplied cartridge?
AttilaSVK (8 days ago)
No, it's fine with the original cartridge
David Marte (3 months ago)
Mine doesnt have that, it's been sitting at 1.5g since may when I bought it.
David Marte (3 months ago)
AttilaSVK I see, I dont think essential iii is upgradable.
AttilaSVK (3 months ago)
Sure, this Essential III would have no problems with the OM10 and the factory fitted counterweight. It's just a totally nonsense idea not to provide a heavy enough counterweight for heavier cartridges (as they would work fine with the OM10 as well). I have had maybe about 10 turntables in my life so far, and only one (the Revox B795) needed an extra weight for some heavier carts.
David Marte (3 months ago)
Yes, the regular om10 that came with my Pro-Ject Essential III George Harrison. Like I said, not a single issue with it.
AttilaSVK (3 months ago)
But you're most likely using the stock Ortofon OM10 cartridge, right?
Badassvidsz (5 months ago)
So this 65g counterweight is designed for the standart OM10e cartridge and no problem right ?? But there's a cure for the heavier cartridges but keeping the standard counterwheight Cut the plexi-glass the part that pushes the counterweight and the job it's done

I still prefer and use quality vintage turntable

Performance is optimized with the weight is close to the pivot point. 7 grams is not heavy for a cartridge. This weight is miles away from where it should be.
AttilaSVK (5 months ago)
I got the point, thanks for the explanation and it's my honour to have you here on my channel :)
Kevin at KAB (5 months ago)
Yes, that's us. It's the inertial of the weight. Mainly an issue on response of the arm playing warped records. The close the weight to the pivot, the less the arm over reacts to it.
AttilaSVK (5 months ago)
That's new for me, but it makes perfect sense. A heavier counterweight would also make more sense, even with the factory installed OM 10 cart. Btw KAB in your username refers to KAB Electro Acoustics in Plainfield, NJ?
margaretsville (5 months ago)
Probably puts undue stress on the tone arm bearings too.

Oh my God, pure s...

With so little space you'd have thought they'd include the heavier counterweight as standard. I'm guessing the TT didn't come with the 2M cart?
Badassvidsz (5 months ago)
AttilaSVK : Dude did you understand what i said ??
Badassvidsz (5 months ago)
Not to cut it with the standard cart dude but with a heavier one in order to keep the same counterwheight Plz before you answer read my main comment i said preciselly what i mean
AttilaSVK (5 months ago)
It's a dumb idea to cut the plexiglass on a new turntable. With the OM10 the problem is not there.
Badassvidsz (5 months ago)
Dudes cut the plexiglass with a sharp knife the part which pushes the counterwheight if you wanna use heavier cartridge and keep the same standard counterwheight : I know it's stupid cause pro-ject should have made better shaped cover for the particular part behind the counter wheight :-) I also wanna buy the turntable and in every video i've watched so far all owners are satisfied but i'm going to be using the standard om10e but in case i want to replace it and keeping the same counerwheight that's the cure i think ;-) What do you say about my thought guys ??
AttilaSVK (5 months ago)
I will have a story to tell about that, but that's gonna be a part of a video :)
DevilAssassin (5 months ago)
No, thats really a bad joke from Pro-Ject! ...and for sure its really essential. 😂
DevilAssassin (5 months ago)
Sorry but in my opinion they think only have the way in product development. For me its still an unfinished product!!!
Badassvidsz (5 months ago)
This is the standard counterwheight which comes with the standard Ortofon cartridge om10e which requires lighter - shorter counterwheight and unfortunatelly the cover is designed for them only ; Or else cut the cover { if you are about to use heavier cart and counterwheight } at the part that pushes the heavier and longer counterwheight when it comes in contact when closing it ........ stupid yes :-( but it works though :-)
HiFisquarepants (5 months ago)
Oh my! You need a heavier counterweight!! 😂
windy miller (5 months ago)
I did say it would nice to have optional counterweights included . I also said it would be no big deal having to buy a counterweight either, at least to me it wouldn't. If I had a choice of both tables I would go for the version of the Essential III with an acrylic platter, which costs £20 less than the AT-LP120 here in the UK. What I saved would go toward a stand alone phono stage.
AttilaSVK (5 months ago)
The Audio Technica AT-LP120 is also a budget turntable (costing even less than this Pro-Ject) and the counterweight is perfectly usable with both the factory installed AT95E cart and the 2M Red. For me this looks like Pro-Ject is treating the customers as cash cows. Want the right counterweight? Then buy it, b***h!
windy miller (5 months ago)
Exactly! The 2M red is more than 2gr heavier than the supplied OM10 . Why is it such a big deal buying a heavier counterweight. If there wasn't one available for this arm then there'd be something to complain about. Sure it would be nice to have a heavier counterweight included, but In the end this is a budget table built to a certain price point.
HiFisquarepants (5 months ago)
AttilaSVK BTW, I've had this nasty issue with my Xpression carbon classic when it comes to install certain cartridges 😠
AttilaSVK (5 months ago)
And that's what the title of this video reflects :)
