Why Fashion Matters: The Power of Getting Dressed | Christian Birky | TEDxDetroit
The way we dress has a profound impact on how we think about ourselves and how others perceive us, yet there remains a disconnect between what we stand for and how our clothes are made. The scale and emotional power of the fashion industry uniquely position it to create a more equitable society. Christian Birky started a pony-powered, zero-emissions lawn service at age 10. Now 25, he continues to explore how the choices we make can create a better world. He studied prison policy at Princeton before founding Lazlo, which hires former inmates to manufacture sustainable menswear in Detroit. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Why Clothes Matter
The clothes we choose to wear constitute some of our most crucial and carefully chosen lines of autobiography. If you like our films, take a look at our shop (we ship worldwide): https://goo.gl/VVUMvO Join our mailing list: http://bit.ly/2e0TQNJ Or visit us in person at our London HQ https://goo.gl/RLVrm9 FURTHER READING "Once, we were all dressed by someone else. Parents picked out a T-shirt; the school dictated what colour our trousers should be. But at some point, we were granted the opportunity to discover who we might be in the world of clothes. We had to decide for ourselves about collars and necklines, fit, colours, patterns, textures and what goes (or doesn’t) with what. We learnt to speak about ourselves in the language of garments. Despite the potential silliness and exaggeration of sections of the fashion industry, assembling a wardrobe is a serious and meaningful exercise." Tommy Hilfiger on 'new American classics' and why fashion is important
As a child, Tommy Hilfiger’s struggles in school and undiagnosed dyslexia led him to think he wasn’t smart. But coming of age in the 1960s, he developed an interest in expressing himself through what he wore. Jeffrey Brown sits down with Tommy Hilfiger to discuss why he decided to write a memoir, what he dislikes in a piece of clothing and why fashion is an important part of pop culture.

Why Fashion Designers Don't Dress Fashionably
Do you ever wonder why fashion designers don't dress very well? I explain, from a fashion designer's perspective, why I don't dress fashionably. Ask me a question! Or leave a comment below to explain why you DO or DON'T dress fashionably! Article Version is here: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/why-fashion-designers-dont-dress-well-emily-m-keller?trk=pulse_spock-articles Designers are figuring out 1 piece of the puzzle, where stylists are dealing with the big picture puzzle. I’m like many other fashion designers. I don’t dress particularly well or fashionably. Those of you out there that already know fashion designers don’t dress well, you’re ahead of most. Give me a second and let me help the others catch up and understand that lots of designers don’t dress fashionably. It’s a classic case of “The cobbler’s son has no shoes”, “There are only wooden spoons at the blacksmith’s house”, “The lady who sells fans fans herself with her hands”, “At the potter’s house water is served in a broken jug”, “The carpenter’s house always needs work, “The architect’s house is always crooked.” Why People think we dress well: -Stylists’ Confusion – We didn’t go to school to style outfits. We didn’t learn how to coordinate colors with shapes on different body types. We went to school to learn how to develop designs and how to execute them. I learned absolutely nothing about styling in my 4 years at FIT because my major wasn’t styling. Why We Don’t: 1. Workaholism – successful designers are obsessed with their work, therefore they tend to neglect all other aspects of their life. And dressing yourself is a completely different animal from dressing other people. And if I know I’m going to make no money off of dressing myself, then I would rather spend my time designing my clothing line. Time is money. Although, I do feel like this is changing with social media and each individual’s ‘personal brand’ is becoming more important. 2. Clothing Exhaustion – I design clothes all day for my target customer. The last thing I want to do when I get home is look at my own clothes and think about what to wear. 3. A designer isn’t usually their customer - Many designers’ target customer isn’t normally a category that they themselves fit into. This can be why you don’t see designers running around in their own pieces. It can be awkward to wear your own clothes if you know you’re not the type of person you’re designing it for. 4. Dressing Yourself Is Hard – Just as it’s easier to judge others actions and life choices, it’s also easier to know what others should be wearing. It’s hard to realistically judge your own character and therefore it’s also hard to dress yourself. Honestly, my boyfriend has a ton of say in what I wear. He is basically my personal stylist because I can’t figure out how to dress myself. Although I do sometimes ignore his strong opinions. 5. Simplifying life – This is a big trend right now. With all the minimalist living ideas popping up. But there are plenty of people who had this concept in mind before it became cool. Having a daily simplified ‘uniform’ saves time in one’s busy schedule. Think about it: if your whole closet was white button downs, blue jeans, and black sneakers, you would save so much time in the morning. Boom. Especially if you knew you looked good and felt confident in that ‘uniform’. Remember those days when the minute you left your house you regretted what you put on? You would never have a day like this ever again! You could predictably exude confidence. It’s lowering your risk of looking like an idiot. 6. We’re too cool. We’re basically just too cool to dress fashionably. Maybe it’s a bit of an elitist mentality. Everyone knows that fashion wannabes put a lot of effort into what they wear. Who are fashion wannabes you ask? They’re all the other fashion industry professions except for designers. This includes but is not limited to: stylists, buyers, merchandisers, bloggers … At FIT, the merchandise majors dressed up for class: heels, makeup, the works. The designers didn’t. Our work load was notoriously larger, so we didn’t have the time to pamper ourselves. Plus we had more crap to carry. You can’t wear heels while carrying a suitcase full of paper, fabric, scissors, and humongous rulers, without looking like an idiot. Dressing comfortably started as a necessity in school and wound up being a key differentiation between us and them as we transitioned into the working world. Too cool for school should really be too cool since school. Jessica Schroeder Quirk is the author behind What I Wore, a personal-style and fashion-based blog, and What I Wore: Four Seasons, One Closet, Endless Recipes for Personal Style, due in bookstores this summer. A graduate of Indiana University with a degree in Apparel Merchandising, Jessica worked as a fashion designer in New York City from 2005-2009. Since 2008, Jessica has been posting photos and descriptions of her daily ensembles along with wardrobe advice, do-it-yourself project ideas and behind the scenes peeks at the New York fashion scene. She has been quoted in Women's Wear Daily and the Wall Street Journal and been featured in the New York Post, Time Out New York, Lucky Magazine and Paper Magazine. Jessica has been a twice-featured speaker at the Independent Fashion Blogger's Evolving Influence Conference during New York Fashion Week. Last fall, Jessica married Adam Quirk (who shoots most of her daily photos) and they returned to Bloomington to make a home. At TEDxBloomington, Jessica relays the importance of clothing in our daily lives. She notes how we all can capture important memories with our clothing, how "there is joy and luck and confidence in what we wear," and that "dressing for the job you want rather than the job you have" can give you "a day full of confidence." http://whatiwore.tumblr.com About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. Expect a range of topics with this new series, we want to be real and candid with you all! For our first "Sista Talks" video, we dived into the controversial topic of diversity and inclusion in fashion. Historically, the fashion industry has been known to exclude people of color when in reality people of color start almost every fashion trend you can think of. We wanted to bring this conversation to light. Because we love fashion and want to be a part of this industry, we want to continue to use our platform and content to showcase inclusive imagery that we want to see in mainstream fashion media. We believe anyone can be a part of the fashion industry no matter what size, race, sex, or gender etc!! This is a response video from the Can you still be goth without listening to the music. I added more of a story time why music to me is more important than the fashion to me since growing up in a Hispanic household it was difficult for me to dress a certain way and being plus size didn't help neither and express myself the way I wanted to until I finally became 16 or 17 my parents were less strict. Is Fashion Important?: Yes or No (100 Years of Fashion)
Here are some other places you may find me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/BienTheDiretor Twitter: https://twitter.com/BienTheDirector Hey there, welcome back to the awesome channel on today’s episode we’ll be looking at fashion, best known for Kanye West. now clothing is an essential part of our everyday life wouldn’t you say so? Without it we would be running around the world butt naked like we’re 60s hippies high on that lucid shhh. But can you imagine that though running around the world butt naked like Adam and Eve but as i was saying, clothing is an essential part of our everyday life and The majority of us like to dress up. Whether that is in designer like Tom Ford, Gucci and Ralph or something more street and regular like H&M or Supreme. we all love to dress up! So Let's take a few little moment to talk about Fashion Or as it’s known by almost every Ricegum fans, Supreme. Now the question i want to ask you all is that well is Fashion important? Would you say Yes or No? Lets look at why some people would say Yes. Fashion is a movement. Therefore some would argue yes Fashion is important because it's society reflected onto clothing. you see like i mentioned before, it's a movement directed by a change of attitudes in society. i mean just look at the past 100 years of fashion. Edwardian Period, a more laid back, fun loving and carefree period in comparison to the Victorian Era and this was represented in the clothing, more loose and active. But however during this era women were still considered as property of men. They were more or less seen as house trophies! And that was reflected by the clothing, designed less for the practical use of women and more as an art decoration that men could put in the kitchen or use in the bedroom! But then society went through the first world war and with the men taking up arms and fighting, women came to the forefront of society! And that was reflected in fashion because women clothing became more about the woman. Practical, comfortable, free, independent!! And the person who played such an important role in this was The Famous Coco Chanel. She saw and opportunity and gave women want they wanted, made them feel like they were much more than a decoration for men. So yes some would argue that fashion is important because it's part of what represents society in different eras. Look at The Roaring twenties for example, that era was one of the most prosperous decade in the past 200 years, the world was moving fast and attitudes starting to change drastically. The advent of Jazz made turned the world into a more sociable place, people laughed, people danced. People had fun and that was expressed through the clothing. It was loose, fun, sexy, sophisticated, quick, dazzling, sparkly, showy, jazzy. Then there’s swinging 60s, the decade of the beatles! Heavily influenced by flower power. With ever growing strife in the world. Vietnam, civil right, people wanted to escape! They just wanted peace, they just wanted to live and escape somewhere else. They wanted to remain youthful and be carefree living with freedom. And that was expressed through the clothing again. As it was expressive, colourful, casual quick. Then there’s the 90s, the rebellious decade! The people that didn’t want to conform to the norm and brought about a punk attitude, we didn’t want to be glamorous, we wanted to be edgy, new and different and again that was represented in the fashion with the anti glam style, tomboyish outfits. A more grungie and street approach to clothing. Let's be a little less historical and more practical. Fashion is Good way to express yourself and your personality. And through this it Can promote creativity as fashion use aspects of art and other art forms. It gives you Sense of individuality, its something that you bought because you wanted to and really and trully the world would be a little boring, plain and generic without fashion. Fashion shows the world who we are as it representation of different cultures. Now remember the statement i made earlier? Now that is the reason why some people would argue that NO Fashion isn’t important. Fashion arouses insecurities, it's one of the main driving force behind, jealousy, envy and bullying. Especially when your form of expression not accepted by the majority. How can it be giving us a sense of individuality when some of us are in some part doing for the sake of validation! Fashion is a selfish and egotistical thing, it's all about you! It doesn’t represent your values as a human being! How many of you hypebeast have looked at supreme and gone yeah i’m buying this because i want to save the world! 90% percent of the time that’s not the reason why we buy clothes! The purpose of clothes is to keep us warm! What in the world does a £100,000 snakeskin boot have to do with keeping warm. What does haute couture have to do with keeping warm. Fashion turns keeping warm into something that is not practical.
