Turkish coast guard against refugee boat in Aegean Sea

01:20
Dramatic footage shot in August 2017 shows a vessel of the Turkish coast guard creating waves and pushing back to the shore, a small boat full of refugees in the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey. The video clip shows the people on boat who are men, women and kids wearing life jackets. The refugees and asylum seekers on board are desperately shouting in Arabic and English while a woman is heard screaming: "You kill us!' The boat of migrants eventually moved away and made it to Lesbos - Mytilene island, with the video shooter to have apparently handed out for the media. ----- If you have any questions or comments please leave them below. Turkey's Turquoise Coast From the Air

03:43
The Mediterranean section of Turkey's Turquoise Coast stretches from Marmaris eastward to Antalya and beyond, a relatively short distance -- that you could feasibly spend a whole summer exploring. The immediate highlights are the beaches, the arcs of powdery sand and gentle pebbles meeting the namesake turquoise waters at İztuzu, Ölüdeniz, and Kaş. These are punctuated by dramatic mountain peaks and valleys. And dotted within this incredible terrain are some truly old, and truly impressive, ruins: Tlos, Myra, Kekova. When the Matador crew visited last month, they experienced all this and more while enjoying the hospitality and adventure opportunities that await tourists in this part of Turkey. Follow along as they trace the Mediterranean and bring back a unique perspective: Turkey's Turquoise Coast, from the air. Find more great content at http://www.matadornetwork.com

Eastern BlackSea Region of Turkey

00:49
The Black Sea Region Lush and green throughout the year, rocky mountains, the cool waters of the coast and plantations of tea, hazelnuts, tobacco and corn, the Black Sea is a unique part of the country. The main industry is farming, thanks mainly to the high rainfall, andin the summer the roadsides are lined with hazelnuts drying in the sun. The culture, cuisine, climate and even dialect is different to the rest of Turkey, and the coastal road stretches from east of Istanbul to the border with Georgia. The cities in this region are Amasya, Artvin, Bolu, Corum, Duzce, Giresun, Gumushane, Kastamonu, Ordu, Rize, Samsun, Sinop, Tokat, Trabzon Zonguldak, Bartin and Karabuk. Akcakoca is on the far western side of the coast, with endless hazelnutorchards. Inland to the east is Safranbolu, with a wonderful collection of old Ottoman houses, and Devek, famous for its intricately carved walking canes.Further along the coast are Inkum, Amasra and Cakraz, and then Sinop which has been a port for 1000 years and is still one of the biggest in the Black Sea. The town takes its name from the Amazon queen Sinope and local mythology suggests that femalewarriors, called Amazons, lived in this region. It is now an important industrial and commercial centre.Unye and Fatsa, east of Samsun, are popular holiday resorts with natural scenic beauty, beaches, accommodation, campsites and restaurants. Ordu is a charming city with hazelnut orchards stretching out for miles in all directions and 46km east isGiresun, with its castle perched on a steep rocky slope, crowning the city and overlooking the beach. This is where the Roman general Lucullus saw cherries for the first time, and liked them so much he introduced them into Europe.Trabzon is another important commercial port on the Black Sea, and it connects with ports in other Black Sea countries. Trabzon Castle was founded on an area shaped like a table, and the architecture that developed around the castle reflects Byzantine,Commagene and Ottoman styles. The city's most important building is the Ayasofya Museum, the interior of which is decorated with frescoes, and the exterior with reliefs. From Boztepe Park and the Ataturk Museum there are stunning panoramic views ofthe city. Inside the Altindere National Park near Macka, the Sumela Monastery is perched on high cliffs overlooking the Altindere valley, and was founded in the 14th century by Alexius III. Inside the monastery is a church, a library, various other rooms and asacred spring. The area around Rize is the wettest in the country with wonderful shades of green, and is the centre of Turkey's tea production with plantations on the high terraces. Hopa is the last Turkish port before reaching the Georgian border, and to the southis Artvin. The city was established on the terraced hills overlooking the Coruh River, which is well known for rafting, and within the province are old Georgian houses and churches.

Turkey: Russian ship escorted through Bosphorus by Turkish coast guard

01:31
The Russian landing ship the Alexander Otrakovsky 031 crossed Turkey's Bosphorus Strait on Wednesday, en route to the Black Sea. A Turkish helicopter surveyed the operation and security precautions were taken by the Turkish police along the strait's coast. Units from the Turkish Coast Guard were also present, flanking the Novocherkassk as it crossed through Turkish territory. The Bosphorus Straight connects the Black Sea in the north and the Marmara Sea in the south, making it a key sea link between Russia and the Mediterranean Sea. TurkStream’s first line reaches Turkey’s Black Sea coast

04:44
TurkStream’s first line reaches Turkey’s Black Sea coast Russia's Gazprom said Monday it completed the sea portion of the first line of the TurkStream offshore gas pipeline across the Black Sea and reached Turkey's coastline. Gazprom, which plans to complete the pipeline in 2019, said in a statement that 1,161 kilometers (721 miles) of pipe have been laid since it began construction last year, equaling 62 percent of the total pipe length in the project. The receiving terminal at Kıyıköy on the Black Sea coast of Turkey's northwestern Thrace region is under construction, the statement said, adding that when the terminal is completed, the first line will be fully complete. Gazprom President Alexey Miller said that TurkStream is being successfully brought to life and an important hurdle has been overtaken with the completion of the first line. "TurkStream will indisputably contribute to the energy security of Turkey and Europe," he said. The second line, designed to ship gas to southern European countries such as Greece, Bulgaria and Italy, will be laid in the third quarter of 2018, the company said. Both lines have an annual capacity to carry 15.75 billion cubic meters of gas. The total cost of the project is estimated at $7 billion. Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said earlier this month that Turkey's approval for Gazprom's onshore portion of the TurkStream pipeline's second line was still pending. TurkStream spokesperson Sander van Rootselaar said that 224 kilometers (139 miles) of the second line have been laid, up until Turkey's exclusive economic zone, and all approvals for the second line have been obtained. The pipeline construction on land will be carried out by the Petroleum Pipeline Company (BOTAŞ), and the environmental impact assessment process is currently ongoing, van Rootselaar said. He added that the land construction in Russia will also be terminated before December 2019 and the gas flow will begin after that date. Moscow, which relies on oil and gas revenue, sees new pipelines to Turkey and Germany – TurkStream and Nord Stream 2 – as crucial to increasing its market share in Europe. The world's largest offshore construction vessel, the Pioneering Spirit, owned by Swiss company Allseas, carried out the construction. The ship reached Turkey's shores after a 10-month trip with a crew of 562 people from 40 countries. The official Anadolu Agency's energy editorial team paid a visit to the 382-meter-long and 124-meter-wide vessel as it reached Kıyıköy. Captain Loek Fernengel explained that the vessel was constructed in South Korea as two main blocks and welded together in 2013. It undertook its first high seas operation in August 2016 off Norway, carrying a 13,500 ton oil platform. The vessel is equipped with cranes that are able to carry 48,000 tons of weight in a single lift, which is equal to the weight of two and a half Eiffel Towers. The vessel laid a record 5.7 kilometers of pipes in a single day in February, enabling the fast construction of the pipeline at depths reaching 2,200 meters. Fernengel stated that more than 74,000 welds have been made in the project at a margin of error of only 0.63 percent. "So far we have had a very successful process both in terms of our production rate and safety, and quality. We continued working despite 7-8 meter-high waves in a storm about a month ago. It damaged the ship but the production did not cease. We came across plane wrecks and other archaeological sites during pipe laying work. Each time, we set a new route, but we reached our goal on time; there wasn't any postponement," Fernengel said. "Now we have completed this duty, and we will go to Rotterdam from here. There, within 10 days we will transform the vessel from pipe laying setup to platform assembly setup. Then we will take to the road to set up a 22,000-ton oil platform at the continental shelf of Norway. We will return to the Black Sea in the third quarter of 2018 to complete the second line of TurkStream," he added.

Bacterial Fish Pathogens on Whiting in Eastern Black Sea Coast, Turkey

02:28
Mustafa Ture*, D. Selim Mısır, Cemil Altuntas, Ilyas Kutlu Abstract In the present study, a total of 180 whiting (Merlangius merlangus euxinus) were caught in the Eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey and investigated through for six month period for their bacteria. The bacterial agents isolated from fish were identified by Analytical Profile Index (API 20NE, 20E and rapid ID 32 Strep). Fifty-two bacteria were further confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Nine bacterial species, Pseudomonas luteola, Staphylococcus equorum, Vibrio anguillarum, Pseudomonas putida, Acinetobacter johnsonii, Pseudomonas protogens, Oceanisphaera profunda, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Serratia fonticola were identified. This study is the first report on the bacteria of whiting in Turkey and provides significant information in terms of bacterial fish pathogens of this area. http://doi.org/10.4194/1303-2712-v18_11_09

Kusköy, Turkey - the whistling village | European Journal

05:04
Loud, piercing and sharp...a whistle is hard to ignore. But whistling languages are in danger of dying out. But residents of Kusköy on the Black Sea coast still communicate by whistling. An ee sounds higher than an ah. Consonants are distinguished by changes in pitch over different intervals of time. Eskimos communicate with whistles; so do indigenous people in the Amazon, and in Europe shepherds keep boredom at bay and communicate by whistling to each other. But the world's 70 whistling languages are slowly becoming extinct. Kusköy in Turkey is defending the tradition.

Submerged wreck believed to be WW2 German U-boat found off Turkish coast

01:22
Remains of a vessel thought to be a World War Two German submarine have been discovered off Istanbul's coastal district of Sile, Turkey's state-run English language broadcaster TRT WORLD reported. The submarine is believed to be a U-23, one of the six compact U-boats of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine dubbed "Hitler's lost fleet". Maritime explorer Selcuk Kolay, who was on board a Turkish maritime rescue ship, told TRT that the video confirmed that the wreckage belonged to U-23. U-23 was scuttled by her own crew in the Black Sea, off the Turkish coast, in 1944 in order to avoid capture by Soviet soldiers.
