25 Interesting Facts About Northern Lights You Should Know Before You See Them

05:17
Officially known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are one of nature's most spectacular visual phenomena. Appearing in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, curtains or shooting rays, the northern lights' amazing light display can be observed in the sky of high latitude regions such as Norway or Canada. You might know the cause of this natural phenomenon (collision of solar wind and magnetospheric charged particles) but there are many more interesting facts about this unreal spectacle that are worth learning. Here are 25 of them, illustrated with some of the most amazing Northern Lights pictures you have ever seen. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the physical list here for some extra info and explanations - http://list25.com/25-interesting-facts-about-northern-lights-you-should-know-before-you-see-them/ And now for a quick preview: The most spectacular Northern Lights in recent recorded history are considered those from the "Great geomagnetic storm" on 28 August and 2 September 1859. Studies have shown that a solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would likely cause widespread problems for modern civilization. Astronauts on board the International Space Station are at the same altitude as the Northern Lights and see them from the side. The Southern Lights offer the same visual display as the Northern Lights but since the South Pole is even more inhospitable and inaccessible than the North Pole, it is more difficult to view the Southern Aurora. Therefore, the Northern Lights are more popular and get almost all the attention. There are several towns famous for their great conditions for watching the Northern Lights. In North America, the aurora tourism capital is Yellowknife (Northwest Territories, Canada), while Tromso (Northern Norway) is the same for Europe. There have been many legends about the Northern Lights. Some North American Inuit tribes call the aurora „aqsarniit“ (meaning “football players”) thinking it is the spirits of the dead playing football with a head of a walrus. The colors of the Northern Lights depend on what gas is involved and how high in the ionosphere the reaction takes place. Blue and green lights form at lower altitudes while red color comes from the highest altitudes. Auroras tend to be more frequent and spectacular during high solar sunspot activity, which cycles over approximately eleven years. The last climax was in 2013. [...]

What Causes The Northern Lights?

03:33
There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases. Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/atmospheric/question471.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/FMuiBa Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/TR4YyU Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil). Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong. It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood. In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun. The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind. When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins. The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons. Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there. This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them. Northern Iceland has very little light pollution, so tracking the Northern Lights over the Fjords is a great idea. ► Ásbyrgi Canyon - This massive canyon was formed way back after the ice age as melting glacier floods ripped giant divots into the earth and left this beautiful valley and rock walls in its path. ► Northern Lights - In order to have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland, check out this website we used to track the cloud coverage and aurora activity. http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/ ► Godafoss Waterfall - An expansive horseshoe-shaped cascade that’s probably my favorite waterfall of the entire trip. ► Hverir or Namafjall geothermal field - Located in northeastern Iceland around the geothermal region of Lake Mývatn - a vast area of hot springs, sulfur crystals, and boiling mud pots. ► Dettifoss Waterfall - Said to be Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and we’re getting a unique perspective - by moonlight. ------ WHERE WE STAYED in Iceland (with HomeAway): 1. Renaissance - Northern Lights

Band: Renaissance Song: Northern Lights Album: A song for all seasons Year: 1978 Genre: Progressive Rock Lyrics: Desination outward bound I turn to see the northern lights behind the wing Horizons seem to beckon me Learned how to cry too young So now I live to sing The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you Horizons seem to beckon me Learned how to cry too young So now I live to sing Though it's hard away from you Travelling roads and just passing through It's not for money and it's not for fame I just can't explain, sometimes it's lonely Marking the space between the days Early hours pass away I sing to you of northern lights I sing for you of northern nights Past or future, here or there Shelter comes in words from you, so talk to me I hear your voice, it comforts me In morning dreams I take your hand You walk with me The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you Peace enfolds the still night air Home again I look for you and find you there Desintation homeward now Take the easy way, bring me down Making the hard way now I see Hard to be really free, I'm missing you near me Marking the space between the days Early hours pass away I sing to you of northern lights I sing for you of northern nights The northern lights are in my mind They guide me back to you The northern nights are in my eyes They guide me back to you

The Northern Lights Explained | VISIT NORWAY

03:13
To experience the unbelievable colours that moves across the Arctic sky is on many bucket lists, and few places offer more ways to witness the aurora borealis than Norway. But what's the story behind the Northern Lights? During large solar explosions and flares, huge quantities of particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space. When the particles meet the Earth’s magnetic shield, they are led towards a circle around the magnetic North Pole, where they interact with the upper layers of the atmosphere. The energy which is then released is the northern lights. All this happens approximately 100 kilometres above our heads. Winter is the best time to go, as the nights are longest at this time. It’ll be freezing cold but you can’t see the lights unless it’s dark. Go for as long as possible. You’ll often have cloud cover in Iceland. We were there for two weeks and only managed to see the Lights twice. Your best chance is to go somewhere where there’s no light pollution so get out of the city and go somewhere dark. We used the Icelandic weather website, belgingur.is. We found it the most accurate for predicting cloud cover. White areas show where the skies are clear and this gives you your best chance to see the Northern Lights. The second website we used was the Icelandic Met Office. Now this gives you the aurora forecasts, the stronger the better, sunset times and moonrise times. This just means that you can plan for when it gets dark.

Vlog 14: CHASING THE NORTHERN LIGHTS (Kakslauttanen Resort, Lapland, Finland)

12:34
It was a magical experience seeing the northern lights from our igloo bungalow in Kakslauttanen Resort in Lapland, Finland. An island girl from the tropics, it was also my first time in the Arctic Circle so the whole experience was really magical for me. I know a lot of people are planning to catch the northern lights one day, so I have shared a few tips in this video so you can increase your chances of seeing them during your planned visit. If you visit the Arctic Circle, either from Finland, Iceland, Norway, Canada or Alaska, the goal of visiting these countries should not be the lights because of the probability of seeing them. The Aurora Borealis should only be the icing on the cake. I would say we were still "lucky" because we were able to see it 2/5 nights we stayed in Kakslauttanen. Lapland offers so many other adventures so even without the northern lights, it is such a magical place to be. You can go reindeer sledding, visit Santa's Village, go ice fishing and many more. Iceland in Four Days (to see the Northern Lights)

06:54
In late October we went to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. We spent one night in Reykjavik before driving north to the hotel Budir on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where for two nights we laid on the soft moss covered lava fields waiting to see those famous green streaks of the aurora borealis. During the day we explored the north Icelandic coast, met some cute Iceland ponies, and checked out some ancient viking artifacts. Before flying home we took a relaxing dip in the Blue Lagoon. On a good night, you can see flickering sheets of light that dance across the night sky, producing an amazing display of colors. You can see green, red and even yellow and purple ghostly displays. So what causes the Northern Lights? They’re produced as our planet moves through the chemtrails emanating from the womp-rat sized exhaust ports of Planet X. Originating in the Bush-Cheney administration during a failed co-invasion attempt of the lizard people from the hollow part of the flat earth and aliens from John Carpenter’s THE THING. They cause diabetes, gluten sensitivity, itchy bun noodles and homeopathy and herald the coming of the Grand Nagus of MMA-UFC-ENTJ-LOL-WTF-BBQ. That is, if you believe everything you read on the internet. Auroras are in fact caused by interactions between energetic particles from the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field. The Earth is filled with liquid metal, and it rotates inside turning our planet into a giant magnet. Invisible magnetic field lines travel from the Earth’s northern magnetic pole to its southern magnetic pole. This is why compasses point north, they’re following the field lines produced by this giant metallic spinning goo core. Or as I like to call it “The Planetary Shield Generator”, which should not be confused with the giant whirling metallic debris field orbiting the Earth which is our “Alien Invasion Shield”. Which you can learn about in another episode. So why would we need a Planetary Shield, you might ask? It is because we are perpetually under assault by our great enemy, the Sun. Our Sun is constantly releasing a flurry of energetic particles right at us. These particles are electrically charged and driven to Earth by the Solar Wind. When they encounter the Earth’s magnetic field, they’re forced into a spiral along the magnetic field lines. Eventually they collide with an oxygen or nitrogen atom in the Earth’s atmosphere and release photons of light. So, thanks to the spinning magnet goo core, our planetary shield converts these particles into beautiful night time displays. Although there can be auroras almost any night in the highest latitudes, we see the most brilliant auroral displays after large flares on the Sun. The most powerful flares blast a hail of particles that’s so intense, auroral displays can be seen at mid and even low-latitudes. It sounds dangerous, but we’re perfectly safe here, beneath our protective atmosphere and magnetic field. You might be amazed to know that auroral displays can even make sounds. People have reported crackling noises coming from the sky during an aurora. Even though the auroras themselves are at very high altitudes, the particle interactions can happen just a few hundred meters above the ground. People have reported hearing claps and crackles during an aurora, and this has been verified by microphones placed by scientists. If you could get high up into the atmosphere, I’m sure the sounds would be amazing. The interactions between the Sun and our planet are just another gift we get from the night sky. If you've never seen an aurora with your own eyes, you really need to add them to your bucket list. Organize a trip to northern Europe or Alaska and get a chance to see this amazing display of nature. Have you ever been lucky enough to see the Northern Lights? Tell us a story in the comments below. In April 2012, I was part of a team of scientists, teachers and students who travelled to Alaska to observe the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Our mission was a unique one - to launch weather balloons up to 100,000 feet loaded with experiments, tracking devices and HD cameras. This is the result of our trip, produced for Catalyst on ABC1 http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/
