What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?
Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

Tips to draw better a fashion sketch in 4 minutes
The tutorial for today: Tips to draw better a fashion sketch in 4 minutes. We start with the construction axes. Don't over draw them. Just a simple sketch will do.This simple axes will help you and they will be a small guidance for your future costume.Remember that if the shoulder axis goes up, the hip line will balance the figue and it will be sketched in the oposite direction.Use soft lines and the use strong strokes that will create your costume. This is an exercise about composition, accents, balancing the lines in a fashion costume, it is an exercise that will help you be more creative, very fast, As a tip: use a music playlist and depending on the music, you can accelerate your lines, after the beat. There is no use in drawing the details, all you have to do is to have an expressive line, very modulated. For the second fashion sketch start, as previously, with the axes. Then add lines, dots and surfaces to your costume, to make in even more creative and interesting to be watched. A drawing is perfect when you have multiple line sizes - and these you can obtain when you press softer or harder, when you can add pression to your pencils and control the lines. Another tip is to keep your eyes half closed to see where you need to put the accents in a fashion sketch. If the sketch has almost the same "color" let's say, it is time to have areas where the line is stronger or softer, where you have empty spaces or black surfaces. These areas are those where the eye of the viewer stops and reflects, where the eye takes a break. When drawing more figures on a single paper sheet, try to think of all of them as a unit, as a whole. Each fashion sketch can be treated as an individual composition, but also the full paper should be in harmony, having the perfect composition. See those black areas that I underline sometimeS? Those are the equilibrium of each composition and they help you create a rythm to your drawings. At then end, take a look at all my drawings on this page and try to understand which technique I applied and why. The first model is feminine and it has a curved soft line. The scond one has the accents put on the upper side, having big volumes in the shape of a pair of earrings and jewelry for the neck. The third one is more elastic, nervous and it has a bigger volume the the preivous sketches. Here the contrast between the soft lines and those with accents is bigger. The costume is composed by 3 areas that are round: the two volumes on the shoulders and the lower part- the skirt. The last one has a more masculine approach. The lines are bold, strong and they tend to have angles. They are more rigid and they look geometric somehow. The last figure is the accent of this composition. The line is crazy and unexpected, compared to the previous strokes. Try to do this exercise at home, by copying my sketches and then by inventing new ones. Good luck!

11 Tips & Techniques | Fashion Sketching
Watch more How to Draw Fashion Sketches videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/501932-11-Tips-and-Techniques-Fashion-Sketching Learn eleven fashion sketching tips and techniques from fashion designer Garo Sparo in this Howcast video. All right, here are some tricks of the trade, shortcuts, call them whatever you want but they're really going to help you out in fashion design. First thing is always have a good croquis that you've developed, okay? That's what's going to make everything easier when you're sketching your clothes. I'm just going to sketch and talk through this but, one thing is, you never want to start with pen, unless you're really confident. You always want a good mechanical pencil. You start your sketch in pencil; you know you can just always go in and erase the pencil. I'm going to do like a gown with a train here. I have my little croquis underneath so that's helping me out, making it go real fast. And another thing that you want to always have on hand, because even if after you've inked in your sketch, is whiteout. Whiteout is a great thing. It will never show up on a scan when you finally scan the finished product into your computer, because you can then print it out and have a gorgeous, clean version; that's another trick. So do your sketch, you scan it in, you lose all the whiteout and whatever else you've done to it; even if you've done patchwork or what have you, you'll never know. Photoshop is a good trick for coloring things in, though I don't use it, I'm kind of old-fashioned that way. You know you really don't have to draw hair. Hair is not that important. You don't have to draw hands if you don't want to; it's not about the hands. You want a good eraser because you are going to mess up, I promise. A definite don't is do not ink until you're ready because you don't want to have to redraw something. Especially if you have a client sitting right beside you; they're not going to want to sit there and watch you draw it all over again. Another great thing is to have a sketching kit that you can pretty much take with you wherever you go because you never know when you're going to get inspired to do what you're going to do. You want to have it on-hand so that you get that idea right out of your head before it's gone. It's happened to me a million times and I learned my lesson. Once I'm happy with the sketch, I will usually go in and give it some ink. And even at this point, you still can ink in the sketch and not worry about the pencil; that's what erasers are for, it's no big deal. So here we go. And try to keep your lines smooth and beautiful. And don't be fazed if they break because that just adds some dimension and what not, "character" we'll call it. She's in a long cap sleeve gown. I'm really into like elongating the body with seam lines; that's one of my things. And even if you don't go straight over your pencil lines, just kind of go with the flow; let your body feel it as you go. Don't over think it; that's a big no-no. Give it some bead work. And like you know, even if you're drawing lace, if you're drawing a plaid, what have you, as long as you have a piece of the fabric on the same page, it really could just be a little squiggle on the sketch; it's not really meant to be that literal. Don't get too hung up on those details. Because it's all about giving the notion of what the finished product is going to be and showing who you're making it for, or who you're trying to get your point across to, right there and then. Those are some of the tricks of the trade, shortcuts, et cetera.

Face Shapes And Necklines - Fashion Tips By Marilyn Hellman
Find us at https://www.marilynhellman.com/ Marilyn Hellman demonstrates how to choose various clothing necklines to flatter different face shapes - oval, round, oblong, square, triangle. Transcript Hello, I'm Marilyn Hellman and I'm in my shop in Naples, Florida on Fifth Avenue. We're going to talk about face shapes and necklines. By popular demand we brought back our face shape board and we're going to start out with the oval face because that's the most common and probably the easiest. You never have to worry about this face shape and it goes with turtlenecks, scoop neck lines, and V-necklines. The next face is oblong. With Oblong, you're going to want to emphasize horizontal lines. You should stay from turtlenecks but you can adjust that with jewelry or scarves, and even hairdos. Also, strong horizontal lines really here, esp strapless. You're all sitting there saying what are we going to do about our arms? We have these taffeta jackets, all kinds of different colors and look how pretty this is. There's a lot of things you can do with them. Here again, strong horizontal lines, sometimes it can be in the pattern or the textile that helps, so it's not just the neckline itself. Also, the pattern that's on the dress or blouse will help you. This is the triangle face and I have to tell you this was really kind of one of my favorite faces because I love the kinds of collar configurations that you can do with it. One of them is the umpire and what you're trying to do when you look at the umpire collar is you're trying to fill out in the jaw line down around here to kind of frame the bottom of your face. When you're starting to look at softening things up, you want to make sure that the colors are up in the back. I want to talk to you a little about ruffles, a lot of people think they can't wear ruffles because of their bust size; ruffles can change depending on the width or the length of them, so try a ruffle bust before you give it up. Okay, you didn't think we were to get by without a white blouse but as you can see, when you do some of these bigger collars on the white blouses and you bring them up, see how pretty this can be to fill out the lower part of the chin, that's nice and this is even better with a Marilyn scarf; all of these are really good with the triangle and it has a real regal look. The key thing about round shaped faces is not to wear round necks. With a neckline closer to the neck, we put in a piece of jewelry, that did a really strong V. If you're going to do a V-neck, you definitely emphasize it with a pendant, not something round, that's the key for this. You will be affected by the length of your neck, so the longer your neck, easier it is. Turtlenecks I would stay away from on this and anything like that, just to keep the stuff away from your face. The square face is interesting because it's sort of the opposite of the triangle face, you've got all of this width down here so now we don't want umpire at all. We don't want to stress this part of the angling, what we're looking for is turtlenecks but not too terribly high, more of a modified cowl. Basically stay away from those sort of umpires or any horizontals that are really close to the jawline. There's a couple of points I want to make here about face shapes, first of all, some people can be like two face shapes depending on what their hairdos are, depending on where there eye placement are done and if you want to really test that, you can just go online and put in an actor or an actress and you can see that she will come up under more than one face shape. So, I don't want you to think because you have one particular face shape, that it's set in stone. The other one too is, there's a lot of things you can do if you want to wear a neckline that's a little higher, you can do a really strong piece of jewelry because the eye of the individual looking at you is going to see all this beautiful color in the V-neck. You can also do this with rounded things too when you're wearing V-neck collars, you can wear rounded jewelry underneath, you can also use earrings to emphasize certain parts of your face, and if you get a chance to take a look at my earring video, we've gotten a lot of feedback from that one and even the Hat video will help you with – if you are looking at the type of face shapes and how you want to work with them. The other one is a scarf, I always get mad when people tell me they don't wear scarves, you lose 25% of your ability to work with your wardrobe if you don't do scarf. If you have any questions on that please come in and we'll show you and how that can affect how you going to do some of the things you can wear in your face shape.
