In Search Of History - Oracle at Delphi (History Channel Documentary)

43:48
Narrated by David Ackroyd "One of the holiest sites of ancient Greece, Delphi was the pre-eminent shrine of Apollo. Cradled by Mount Parnassos and a valley of olive groves, it was also sacred to Dionysus, who was supposedly buried there. But Delphi is chiefly known for its legendary oracle the most famous of the ancient world. Journey back to the golden age of Greece, when the mysterious oracle of Delphi predicted the futures of kings and countries. In the smoky, haunting, and hallucinogenic atmosphere of the sacred shrine, predictions were uttered by a priestess in a delirious trance and interpreted by a priest speaking in verse. Dramatic re-creations bring the oracle to life, and leading historians explain how Delphi grew wealthy through the offerings of those seeking a glimpse at their destiny. Explore the ruins of this mystical site with archaeologists, and see the latest discoveries that are shedding new light on the legendary city."

The Oracle of Delphi Ancient -Nat Geo Documentary

44:02
Delphi was inhabited since Mycenaean times (14th - 11th c. B.C.) by small settlements who were dedicated to the Mother Earth deity. The worship of Apollo as the god of light, harmony, and order was established between the 11th and 9th centuries. Slowly over the next five centuries the sanctuary grew in size and importance. During the 8th c. B.C. Delphi became internationally known for the Oracular powers of Pythia--the priestess who sat on a tripod, inhaled ethylene gasses, and muttered incomprehensible words that foretold the future. The ancient people of the Mediterranean had such faith in Pythia's view of the future that no major decision was made without consulting the Oracle of Delphi first. Greek and foreign dignitaries, heads of state, and common folk made the pilgrimage to the Delphi sanctuary, and paid great sums for Pythia's oracles. Since the sanctuary only served the public a few days over nine months out of the year, great sums were paid by the more affluent ones in order to bypass the long line of pilgrims. Plutarch served as a priest at Delphi, and in his histories he has left many details about the inner workings of the sanctuary. Pythia entered the inner chamber of the temple ("Adyton"), sat on a tripod and inhaled the light hydrocarbon gasses that escaped from a chasm on the porous earth. After falling into a trance, she muttered words incomprehensible to mere mortals. The priests of the sanctuary then interpreted her oracles in a common language and delivered them to those who had requested them. Even so, the oracles were always open to interpretation and often signified dual and opposing meanings. "You will go you will return not in the battle you will perish" was an example of this duality of meaning. The above sentence can be interpreted two different ways depending where the comma can be placed. If a comma is placed after the word "not" the message is discouraging for him who is about to depart for war. If on the other hand the comma is placed before the word "not", then the warrior is to return alive.

Today Paulo Runs Through "Rahdo's Goofs" If you find Goofs I didn’t notice Please leave Timestamps :) Thank You 11:29 Richard was playing the Shrine part of the game wrong... Basically, to build a shrine The tile has to have the same Image as the one you have on your Zeus Tile (it's your color) and secondly the Greek letter tells you which of the three shrines to build. When you discover a shrine site, if it's not your color, you just get the Greek letter benefit and not build a shrine. The player whose color it is moves that shrine onto the their Zeus tile, then when they move to that shrine site they then get to build their shrine on the previously discovered site and can complete their Zeus tile. This goof will be repeated. No more notes will be made 24:01 When the Titan rolls a 6 each player draws 2 Damage cards!

Delphi: The Bellybutton of the Ancient World

57:31
"What really went on at the ancient Greek oracle at Delphi, how did it get its awesome reputation and why is it still influential today? "Michael Scott of Cambridge University uncovers the secrets of the most famous oracle in the ancient world. A vital force in ancient history for a thousand years, it is now one of Greece's most beautiful tourist sites, but in its time it has been a gateway into the supernatural, a cockpit of political conflict, and a beacon for internationalism. And at its heart was the famous inscription which still inspires visitors today - 'Know Thyself'.

The Oracle of Delphi

06:58
Dr. David Neiman all but transports himself back in time as he describes the experience of visiting the Oracle of Delphi. The priests of Delphi impressed visitors with a dramatic display: Pythia, a drugged and starved priestess would ululate while priests stood nearby and interpreted her cries. Dr. David Neiman (1921-2004) was an internationally renowned scholar, speaker, and writer who inspired many people. His life's work concerned the intricate relations between Christianity, Islam, and Judaism throughout history and in modern times. Dr. Neiman made history come alive through his dramatic presentations and unique interpretations. In light of our current world situation, Dr. Neiman's work is not only extremely relevant but also remarkably prescient. More than anything, Dr. Neiman was a keen observer of the human condition. His words convey our shared history with clarity, humor, and humanity. Dr. Neiman was the first Jewish scholar appointed to teach Religion at Boston College, one of America's leading Catholic Universities. He served as Professor in the Department of Theology for a quarter of a century. While there he was also invited to teach at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After retiring from Boston College, Dr.Neiman moved to Los Angeles, where he taught at Loyola Marymount University, St. John' s Seminary in Camarillo and the University of Judaism in Bel Air.

Ancient Greece Delphi & the Oracle of Apollo

23:49
Nearly 2800 years ago, a group of Greek settlers landed on the coast of Italy. That event marked the start the process which created Magna Graecia, named after the motherland. Join us as we walk through the streets of Cumae, Pasteum, Puteoli, and Neapolis, reconstructed using the most advanced computer graphics. Magna Graecia (Latin meaning "Great Greece", Greek: Μεγάλη Ἑλλάς, Megáli Hellás) is the name of the coastal areas of Southern Italy on the Tarentine Gulf that were extensively colonized by Greek settlers; particularly the Achaean colonies of Tarentum, Croton, and Sybaris, but also, more loosely, the cities of Cumae and Neapolis to the north. The colonists, who began arriving in the 8th century BC, brought with them their Hellenic civilization, which was to leave a lasting imprint in Italy, particularly on the culture of ancient Rome. In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, for various reasons, including demographic crisis (famine, overcrowding, etc.), the search for new commercial outlets and ports, and expulsion from their homeland, Greeks began to settle in southern Italy (Cerchiai, pp. 14--18). Also during this period, Greek colonies were established in places as widely separated as the eastern coast of the Black Sea, Eastern Libya and Massalia (Marseille). They included settlements in Sicily and the southern part of the Italian Peninsula. The Romans called the area of Sicily and the foot of Italy Magna Graecia (Latin, "Great Greece"), since it was so densely inhabited by the Greeks. The ancient geographers differed on whether the term included Sicily or merely Apulia and Calabria — Strabo being the most prominent advocate of the wider definitions. With this colonization, Greek culture was exported to Italy, in its dialects of the Ancient Greek language, its religious rites and its traditions of the independent polis. An original Hellenic civilization soon developed, later interacting with the native Italic civilisations. The most important cultural transplant was the Chalcidean/Cumaean variety of the Greek alphabet, which was adopted by the Etruscans; the Old Italic alphabet subsequently evolved into the Latin alphabet, which became the most widely used alphabet in the world. Many of the new Hellenic cities became very rich and powerful, like Neapolis (Νεάπολις, Naples, "New City"), Syracuse, Acragas, and Sybaris (Σύβαρις). Other cities in Magna Graecia included Tarentum (Τάρας), Epizephyrian Locri (Λοκροί Ἐπιζεφύριοι), Rhegium (Ῥήγιον), Croton (Κρότων), Thurii (Θούριοι), Elea (Ἐλέα), Nola (Νῶλα), Ancona (Ἀγκών), Syessa (Σύεσσα), Bari (Βάριον), and others. Following the Pyrrhic War in the 3rd century BC, Magna Graecia was absorbed into the Roman Republic.

The Delphi Oracle

05:50
At nearly 3000 years old The Delphic Oracle is one of the most important historic sites in the world. Not only was it one of the great wonders of the ancient world, but what took place here determined the fate of history that effects the whole human race to this day. The God Apollo deemed Delphi as the centre of the world. The cone shaped object you see in the video is the naval of the world. Within the Temple of Apollo, the Pythia, or Oracle would be charged with a question. (The Temple of Apollo is the large flat excavation with pillars at one end) The Oracle would go into a trace and utter things which were considered to be a direct message from the Gods. These 'utterings' would be interpreted by priests and thereon transmitted to the questioner. Within the temple of Apollo was also the eternal flame which never went out. Above the entrance to the temple was the simple message 'Know Thyself'. Emporers, kings, and leaders came from, not only Greece, but from all over the known world to consult the Oracle before important matters of state, such as whether to go to war, who should be the next leader etc. Amongst those was Alexander the Great, who consulted the Oracle before embarking on one of the most successful conquest campaigns in history, where he conquered the Egyptians, Persians, and Indians, amongst many other nations. Homer, the legendary Greek poet concerns one of his great epics 'Odyssey' around the Delphi Oracle, and it is extremely likely that King Leonidas of the Spartans consulted the Oracle before his fateful battle with the Persians a few kilometres away at Thermopylae. These events, and many more shaped the world we live in to this very day. Today the ancient site of Delphi shows the inevitable signs of age, plunder, and weathering, but it is not so difficult to imagine Alexander the Great climbing the slope to the Temple of Apollo with his question.

A Greek Odyssey 1/2 | Consulting The Oracle (Delphi, Meteora, Ioannina, Megalo Papingo)

In the spring of 2004, my girlfriend Mandy and I took a trip to the mainland of Greece. We visited the Oracle at Delphi, the monasteries of Meteora, the walled city of Ioannina, the slate villages of Zagoria, the Perama Caves, the forts of Corfu and the Acropolis and old Olympic stadium in Athens. These two videos are not really 'travel' vids as I usually make them, they're more like personal photo albums (ones that move!), but we managed to capture a taste of Greece and a time in our lives which we would like to share with you.
