Paul Merton's Birth of Hollywood - Episode 3

58:57
Paul Merton traces the rise of the studios through the story of MGM - the biggest dream factory of them all, which boasted of 'more stars than the heavens'. Metro Goldwyn Mayer's studio system was perfected by its young producer Irving Thalberg, the boy genius of Hollywood's silent era. The programme shows how he challenged the power previously wielded by the director of a film, taking on a much more creative role as the producer. This involved dealing with some of the most notorious egos in movie-making, such as that of flamboyant director Erich Von Stroheim. It was famously said of Thalberg that he didn't just make movies - he 're-made' them. He may have turned MGM into what Paul Merton calls 're-take valley' but Thalberg never put his name on any of his films, even the original Ben Hur or Mutiny on the Bounty - which may explain why you might never have heard of this remarkable man who did more than anyone to steer 1930s Hollywood from the silent to the sound era.

The birth of a film industry: Hollywood and World War I

17:34
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN As we mark the centenary of the United States entering World War I, FRANCE 24 brings you a documentary on the birth of Hollywood. Our journalist Florence Gaillard sheds new light on the first movie stars and the first Hollywood films, which emerged during the conflict in Europe. At the start of the 20th century, while the Europeans were bogged down in World War I, Europe’s film industry was at a standstill. But across the Atlantic, it was starting to take off. Film professionals, who were based in New York and Chicago, were moving to Los Angeles to expand their production. With its sunshine, wide open spaces and the diversity of its landscapes, the Californian metropolis was the perfect setting to welcome ambitious entrepreneurs and artists in search of fame and inspiration. At the time, Hollywood was a small rural community that had just become part of Los Angeles. Filmmakers were starting to build the first open-air sets. Filming was expanding, production techniques were evolving and the first blockbusters were born. The conflict in Europe (1914-1918) soon became a source of inspiration for Hollywood. At first, from 1914 to 1915, films made the case for peace, relaying the US policy of non-intervention. The tone began to change from 1916, with heroes who were clearly taking the side of democracy and the Allied powers. In 1917, when the United States entered the war after three years of neutrality, popular actors – such as Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford – joined forces with Washington to encourage Americans to sign up for war bonds. Finally, 1918 marked the year of anti-German propaganda, nationalism and victory. If the Americans managed to take over the world film market, it was because the Europeans were mired in a seemingly endless war. In just a few years, US filmmakers would go from pioneers to tycoons. The Californian studios combined the production, distribution and exploitation of films. To this day, the Europeans, despite inventing cinema themselves, have never caught up with Hollywood. For this documentary, we consulted archival footage: films, photographs, propaganda content... Four American specialists of the period also brought us their insights: Steven J. Ross and William Deverell, history professors at the University of Southern California, Cari Beauchamp, the author of books on the women who marked the beginnings of US cinema – such as Mary Pickford and Frances Marion – and finally Marc Wanamaker, who has the largest collection of documents on Hollywood. We bring you a flashback to the roots of Hollywood, which is still flourishing today. A documentary produced with the Centenary Partnership Programme. ►► On France 24, also watch our special show "World War One: The war that changed women’s lives" Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

1915: The Birth of a Nation - Hollywood's first motion picture

05:20
Birth of a Nation was the first feature film produced in Hollywood. It remains as divisive as it did when it came out in 1915. D. W. Griffith push the art of cinema into the 20th century by pioneering new editing and camera techniques, however the film’s values are those of racial bigotry, where black people are lazy and criminal, and the KKK are heroes.

In Vulture’s video series, Expert Witness, we ask scientists, historians, and other professionals to give Hollywood movies a good old-fashioned fact-check. Childbirth in movies and TV is often used as a dramatic plot point, the climax of a story, or sometimes even a dangerous obstacle which our heroines must overcome. But how do these Hollywood birth scenes measure up to the real thing? We asked a professional midwife and a doula to fact-check some famous births from the silver screen.

The Birth of the Film Industry in Fort Lee

01:31
This episode of "It Happened Here: New Jersey" features the birth of the American film industry in Fort Lee. In the early 1900s, Fort Lee was home to major motion picture studios including Universal, Fox, and Goldwyn Pictures. The town's cheap real estate, the cliffs of the Palisades, and its proximity to Broadway made it a perfect location for the burgeoning industry, even if for a short time. "It Happened Here: New Jersey" is a production of Kean University, in partnership with the New Jersey Historical Commission. The series is narrated by Willie Geist. PCK Media is serving as producer of the series. For more information about this and other activities planned for New Jersey's 350th Anniversary, visit www.officialnj350.com.

"The story behind the birth of Hollywood"

02:05
1883, New York City, Wall Street—an odd baby was born to a wealthy tycoon, who paid a large sum of money not to be named, and his wife Ann. The baby had a thick mustache and thick eyebrows. The tycoon and his wife tried shaving their baby. But the hair grew back, thicker. They shaved the baby again. Same result. Again. And again. No good. The only option was to give the baby up for adoption. A young married couple, who could not conceive, adopted this strange child and named him John Hollywood. John Hollywood grew up in the film industry because his new parents were actors. John Hollywood became a well respected actor, writer, director, producer, and even musician. He was so respected people began calling him Mr. Hollywood Mr. Hollywood took his production company, complete with crew, actors, cameras, lights, carpenters, lumber, sack lunches, and bags of money to Los Angeles, CA where they would shoot a feature film! They were headed for the downtown area, but got lost somewhere in the hills. But they had sack lunches and decided to make their movie in this unknown area. Mr. Hollywood fell in love so much with the hills that he used his bags of money to buy the surrounding area. This town, he decided, would be the biggest film empire in the world! And he christened it Hollywood! He had his carpenters build him a sign in the hills that said HOLLYWOOD And the rest is history... Important studios moved here as did big stars, hot-shot screenwriters and directors. Yet Mr. Hollywood remains the biggest icon in all of Hollywood, as he never seems to age and his facial hair never thins.

2016 Hollywood Movie The Birth of a Nation (Biography, Drama)

00:56
Watch Hollywood Movie The Birth of a Nation's Wallpapers and Images. The Birth of a Nation is a 2016 American period drama Movie based on the story of Nate Parker, the enslaved man who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia in 1831. The Movie is co-written, co-produced and directed by Nate Parker (in his directorial debut) and stars Parker as Nat Turner, with Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller and Gabrielle Union in supporting roles. Parker also petitioned financiers to invest in the Movie, ultimately getting a $10 million production budget and started Movie in May 2015 in Georgia. The Movie premiered in competition at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2016. Fox Searchlight Pictures bought worldwide rights to the Movie in a $17.5 million deal, the largest deal at the film festival to date. At the end of the festival, it won the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and was highly praised for its directing, acting, soundtrack and cinematography. The Movie will be theatrically released on October 7, 2016 by Fox Searchlight Pictures. Because the Movie attracted increased scrutiny due to possible Oscar nominations, and the Movie itself depicts a brutal, historically innacurate rape, there was significant press coverage of a 1999 rape that Parker and his roommate were alleged to have committed. While both Parker and his roomate were ultimately accquited, the controversy surrounding the alleged rape and Parker's initial responses to the controversy, cast a shadow over the Movie.

SHAZAM! - Official Teaser Trailer [HD]

02:54
SHAZAM! - Only in theaters April 2019 ----- http://ShazamMovie.com https://www.facebook.com/ShazamMovie/ https://twitter.com/ShazamMovie/ https://www.instagram.com/ShazamMovie/ ---- David F. Sandberg (“Annabelle: Creation”) directs New Line Cinema’s “Shazam!,” the origin story that stars Zachary Levi (TV’s “Chuck”) as the titular DC Super Hero, along with Asher Angel (TV’s “Andi Mack”) as Billy Batson, and Mark Strong (the “Kingsman” movies) in the role of Super-Villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Peter Safran (“Aquaman,” “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” films) serves as the film’s producer. We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong). “Shazam!” also stars Jack Dylan Grazer (“IT”) as Billy’s best friend and ultimate superhero enthusiast, Freddy, part of the foster family that includes Mary, played by Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”); Darla, played by Faithe Herman (TV’s “This is Us”); Eugene, played by Ian Chen (TV’s “Fresh Off the Boat”); and Pedro, played by Jovan Armand (TV’s “Hawaii Five-O”). Cooper Andrews (TV’s “The Walking Dead”) and Marta Milans (TV’s “Killer Women”) play foster parents Victor and Rosa Vasquez, with Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond”) as the Wizard. Firmly set in the DC universe but with his own distinctly fun, family-centric tone, the screenplay is by Henry Gayden, story by Gayden and Darren Lemke. Shazam was created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Christopher Godsick, Jeffrey Chernov, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia serve as executive producers. Sandberg’s creative team includes his “Annabelle: Creation” director of photography Maxime Alexandre, production designer Jennifer Spence, editor Michel Aller and costume designer Leah Butler. A New Line Cinema production, “Shazam!” is set for release on April 5, 2019. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Hollywood Agenda: "Black Panther" Vs. "Birth of A Nation"

00:39
This Instagram notification I received reminds me of the "Beef Over Black Panther" video I posted yesterday. I swear, I really try to keep my social media experience strictly business, with personal moments shared from time to time. But I can't ignore many of the glaring social issues represented in our daily entertainment and the resulting, often heated, online dialogue. . . . As much as I enjoy many superhero movies; especially "Black Panther," due to the representation of Black and African culture, it is strictly for entertainment and is NOT a Black-financed film. Nate Parker, a Black man, independently produced the Nat Turner film, "Birth of A Nation." It was a reality-based, educational and entertaining movie about an initially successful SLAVE REVOLT based on REAL events. Nate Parker was subsequently drug through the mud in a smear campaign based on old rape charges, (by a white woman), which he had been acquitted of almost 18 years prior. The ensuing dialogue caused division among the BLACK COMMUNITY, (especially among Black "feminists"), about whether or not to support the film, which ultimately led to rapidly plummeting ticket sales and quick removal from mainstream theatres and movie venues. . . . Let's stop acting like there's not a Hollywood agenda. They ARE called radio, computer and television "PROGRAMS" for a reason... . . . Have a good day y'all!✌ . . . #blackpanther #movie #marvel #message #whatsbeef #divideandconquer #blacklove #feminism #unitedwestand #dividedwefall #groupeconomics #birthofanation #nateparker #dontrustit #dontbelievethehype #whenartimitateslife #positiveblackimages #entertainment #thelearning #levelup #communication #eachoneteachone #knowledge #puremotive #goodintentions #justtryingtohelp #literacymatters #readingisgangster #wegottadobetter #itschessnotcheckers

'Birth of a Nation' slavery movie stumbles in Hollywood

00:59
a Los Angeles screening of slavery movie "The Birth of a Nation" has been called off by the American Film Institute amid controversy over an old rape case involving the film's director. The news comes as Hollywood's awards season swings into gear. The screening was scheduled for Friday at the AFI. It was to be followed by a question and answer session with director Nate Parker in what would have been Parker's first public event since it emerged last week that the accuser in his 1999 rape trial and acquittal committed suicide in 2012. 36 year old Parker was little known before writing, directing and starring in the film which wowed audiences at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Telling the story of Nat Turner, who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831, the film was seen as a strong 2017 Oscar contender. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/entertainment/~3/7OmMsd4-54w/us-film-birthofanation-idUSKCN10Z2FX http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Entertainment using http://wochit.com
