25 Things You Should Know About Becoming a Teacher

04:08
This is a video I made for my cohort. Feel free to use it with new teacher inductions, teacher graduations, or any other thing that honors teacehrs. 25 Things to Know About Teaching Congratulations. You are about to enter one of the most noble professions in the world. Here are 25 things you should know about ahead of time: That’s right. Twenty-five. 1. During the first week of school, your feet are going to hurt. 2. You will rediscover the joy of simple things, like smelly markers. 3. You will have teacher nightmares the month before you start teaching. It’s totally normal. We all get them. 4. But some of those nightmares will become a reality. Because you’re going to fail. Hard. But each mistake is another iteration closer to success. So, keep experimenting. 5. You will learn to hold your bladder for hours on end. If this were an Olympic sport, teachers would be gold medalists. 6. You will cry in your car. Or at your desk. Or maybe even both. 7. You’re going to put on weight. It’s like the freshman fifteen, except it might be 20 or 25. 8. You will yell at your class. You will apologize. And your students will amaze you when they forgive you on the spot. 9. But here’s the thing. You’re going to have amazing lessons and you’ll shock yourself with how awesome you are when you bring your A game. 10. You will leave your lunch at home and eat it from the vending machine. You’ll convince yourself that Cheez-Its and Cheetohs are a full portion of dairy. 11. You’re going to start carrying around hand sanitizer everywhere. Or, as the kids call it, “Hanitizer” 12. From this year forward, you are going to be stuck watching the same Bloodborne Pathogen video year after year after year. Welcome to the club. 13. You’re going to fall asleep at 5:00 in the evening with a half-empty carton of Ben and Jerry’s and a massive pile of papers. 14. You’re going to try to do too much and try too hard and that’s okay. Just give yourself permission to rest. Watch a movie. Read a book. Go out into nature. Take care of your health. 15. Your students are going to amaze you with their work and their ideas and their growth 16. You’ll feel like the luckiest person alive. And you are. But here’s the thing. So are your students. 17. You will worry about your students. You will have a student whose story breaks your heart and you will think about that child every day when you go home. 18. Then you will go back and you will listen to that child and affirm that child and teach that child and love that child even when they are difficult. Because you are a teacher and that’s what we do. 19. Someday the kids in your class will come back and invite you to their college graduation and hand you a thank you note and you’ll cry in your car just like you did in the first year of teaching. 20. Even on your worst days, you are going to think critically and promote justice and transform the teaching practice. 21. You will inspire students to be better people and 22. empower them to be deeper thinkers. 23. They will feel safe and loved and challenged. 24. They will be the makers who build a better future. 25. And the world will be better place. Because of you.

How to give great customer service: The L.A.S.T. method

10:13
http://www.engvid.com/ Do you work in customer service? What do you do when your customer has a problem? In this video, I will teach you how to give great customer service. You will learn many polite expressions you can use with your customers. I will explain the Listen, Apologize, Solve, and Thank (L.A.S.T) method, which will help your performance at any customer service job. I'll also give you my customer service tips for dealing with an angry customer. After this video, watch Rebecca's video about phone customer service: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBSrZYXkkyE Take the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/how-to-give-great-customer-service-the-last-method/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video I am going to teach you a very, very important thing for customer service. I used to work in customer service, and this is actually one of the most important things I learned, and this is called the L-A-S-T or LAST approach. So, to get started, let's talk a little bit about: What is customer service? So, customer service is when you have customers, of course, and you're trying to make your customers as comfortable and happy as possible. You're also trying to meet their needs and expectations, and solve any problems or situations that they might have. So, customer service is a huge category. There's many, many different jobs where you use customer service. If you work in a hotel, for example, as a clerk, you know, in the lobby, as a bellhop, you will be using customer service. If you work at a restaurant as a server, you'll be using customer service, or as a hostess. If you're the manager of a store, you'll be using customer service. If you work in a business or even in a hospital, you'll be using customer service. So, pretty much any time you're dealing with people from the public and they're customers and you're trying to help them, you're doing customer service. So, there are many different problems that a customer might have. What are some examples of some problems? Can you think of anything, a problem a customer might have? Maybe somebody charged them too much for something, maybe they're in a store and the lineups are too long, maybe a customer is at a hotel and they're very unhappy because the Wi-Fi isn't working or their bed's uncomfortable. So, there's so many different problems customers might have at different types of businesses. In this video what I'm going to teach you is: What do you do when a customer has a problem? Okay? So, a very easy thing to do when a customer has a problem is called the LAST approach. "LAST", what does it stand for? Well, if a customer has a problem, the first thing you should do is listen to their problem, the next thing you should do is apologize, solve their problem, and thank them. So: Listen, Apologize, Solve, and Thank. We're going to look at expressions we use to show we're listening, expressions to apologize, expressions that can help us solve problems, and expressions to thank customers. Okay, so the first step when a customer has a problem is to listen. So, the first thing you should do is find out what the problem is. You can ask them: "What seems to be the problem?" or "How can I help you?" Okay? Once they start explaining what the problem is, very important that you look like you're actually listening and that you do listen. Okay? So, you shouldn't look at your watch: "Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm." Okay? That's a bad idea. You shouldn't look at the sky: "Uh, when is this person going to stop talking?" Okay? You shouldn't roll your eyes. Okay? No, no, no. You need to show that you actually care about what the customer is saying. So, showing you're listening is very important. You can repeat back to the customer what they're saying to show that you understand and to make sure that you did understand. So: "So what you're saying is, you know, there's no hot water in this hotel.", "So what you're saying is the Wi-Fi's not working and you're not happy with that." Okay? These are some examples. "So what you're saying is _________." You can also say: "Let me get this right..." "Let me get this right, what you're saying is that, you know, there's a problem at your table.", "What you're saying is that you've been waiting for your food for a really long time." So it's important to show that you are listening and you acknowledge what they have said. Okay. Now, sometimes with customer service you get a customer who's very angry, and maybe they start swearing, they start using very bad language. Okay? So if this happens, very important that you don't get upset. Okay? When this happened to me in the past, I would actually pretend to be a computer. I would not take anything personally. I would just smile and pretend to be a computer, and that's how I got through angry customers. So, if the person is rude... You know, it's not right if somebody is saying something rude to you, if they're swearing at you, or they're making you feel uncomfortable. So, be polite. Okay?

PREPARING TO TEACH ENGLISH IN THAILAND - Bangkok, Thailand // 216

11:26
Registration day! I'm in Bangkok, getting ready for the orientation with Mediakids, the company who has hired me to teach English in Thailand until October. I started the day shopping more than I've shopped in months (years?) to find "appropriate" clothes. I haggled for a couple of long black skirts, some nice dress shoes, and a professional-looking blouse at JJ Mall in Bangkok, Thailand. I left my hostel and made it to Suda Palace Hotel where Mediakids was running the orientation from. Suda Palace Hotel is a much older hotel than I'm used to, and it was in severe need of some renovation. Nevertheless, it was comfortable enough for the three nights I was there for orientation. Tomorrow, orientation begins! Then I'll be able to teach English in Thailand. (Do you have questions about TEFL in Thailand, or TEFL in general? Leave them in the comments so we can talk it up. ;) ) See what backpack I have: https://youtu.be/FXVxapfBKuE See what's in my backpack: https://youtu.be/juf9ejsEEhg __ MORE ABOUT Fearless Jacey: Join the Fearless Community: http://bit.ly/2l2HXKR My Website: http://www.jaceyfraser.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fearlessjacey/ My Book, Fearless U: http://amzn.to/2nRhZgs HELP US BOTH: Get $25 for using this link at BOOKING.COM: https://www.booking.com/s/19_6/jacey325 Rock an original "Be Fearless" SHIRT! https://teespring.com/stores/the-fearless-store Get PATREON rewards: https://www.patreon.com/FearlessJacey Get $40 AIRBNB credit: https://www.airbnb.com/c/jaceyf9 Get 50,000 BONUS POINTS with a CHASE Travel card: https://www.referyourchasecard.com/6/PV11CJLRHS Learn about TUBEBUDDY--My most-used YouTube tool: https://www.tubebuddy.com/Fearlessjacey _ Here you'll find my honest experience of traveling the world solo on a budget! Learning Reform Part 27

03:59
Hearty Namaste! I am Keshab Prasad Parajuli presenting this twenty-sixth episode of Sikai Sudhar, my personal audio initiative to reform learning. Among the different topics of my interest, here is a short introduction of the magazine called English Teaching Forum. English Teaching Forum is a quarterly journal supporting the teaching of English around the world through the publication of innovative, practical ideas. It is published by the US Department of State in Washington DC in January, April, July and October. Over 6,000 copies of the magazine are distributed in more than 100 countries. Most of the authors are classroom teachers who write side by side with educational experts. US Embassies and Consulates distribute copies of the Forum outside the United States. The articles in this quarterly journal for professionals teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language focus a diversity of pedagogical categories of interest to any classroom teacher: assessment; authentic materials; CALL; classroom management; content-based instruction; cross-cultural communication; curriculum design; ESP; learning styles; lesson planning; materials development; motivation; multi-level classrooms; professional development; project-based learning; reflective teaching; special educational needs; teacher observation; technology-supported learning, and the list of such categories could well go on and on. But Forum also contemplates basic skills such as vocabulary and spelling to more advanced ones like language awareness and critical thinking; and the four skills; grammar; integrated skills; life skills; pragmatics; pronunciation; technology; text analysis; web literacy, to name but a few of the key topics regularly revisited in this prestigious journal. Aspects of American culture and literature, current issues as ethnic minorities, the environment and the evolution of societies, among others, are also present and always dealt with in a perspective of use in the classroom. americanenglish.state.gov/forum offers current issue, monthly highlight and past issues. Each journal has Articles, Reader's Guide, Teaching Techniques, My Classroom, Try This and The Lighter Side Sections. One can simply enter a keyword to search forum journal resources from the given website. With this short introduction of the Forum, I would end this episode now. Thanks and see you soon.

About us: Shanghai Yinsen Culture & Communication Co., Ltd (9ichat) is an online English tutor service. We provide English speaking opportunities and American cultural engagement to young children, teenagers, college students, and young professionals in China. At 9ichat, our goal is not only to provide English tutors to Chinese students, but more importantly, to help them develop engaging and productive relationships with their teachers and learn about American culture. About this position: This is a part-time, online, contract-based English tutor position, with the opportunity to work 7-14 hours a week. The position requires a 9 month commitment. The tutor’s job will be to help clients from China, most of whom are children, to practice oral English and learn American culture via our online classroom, using materials and lessons that 9iChat provides. Tutors must also be able to motivate and maintain the interest of the students while setting an example in professionalism, including timeliness and attendance. Because the majority of our clients are children, the Tutor must be able to engage the attention of the students and use interactive, fun teaching styles. Candidates must be willing to teach at least 7 hours a week, but can possibly work 14 or more hours a week if they provide enough hours. Ideal Applicants 9iChat’s ideal applicants are experienced educators who like working from home, playing with children, setting their own hours, and gaining experience in edtech and online tutoring. If you seek an exciting, secondary work opportunity outside of your other commitments, or if you would like to earn supplemental income in the early morning hours from the comfort of your home, then this is a great opportunity for you. Our tutors are loyal, responsible, timely, engaging, innovative, smart, autonomous, flexible, and willing to grow and learn in the online space of education. And, structurally, ideal applicants are early morning risers (tutoring can begin as early as 5am EDT and usually finishes by 10am EDT). Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. The tutor must have a reliable computer, stable and fast internet service, and a headset to improve the sound quality of lessons. 2. The tutor will work in 1-on-1 sessions with the children. The tutor will provide students with opportunities for oral English practice via conversation and provide background knowledge related to each class topic. Lessons will be provided to tutors. 3. Tutors must provide availability between 6am-11am (EDT). We are looking for tutors who can provide 7-14 hours per week. As an example, tutors could tutor 2 hours every morning. 4. The availability specified by a tutor must be consistent every week. That is, if a tutor specifies that he or she can be available every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7AM to 9AM, then she or he must be available at those times. Cancelling times or classes will result in penalties. 5. Tutors must always show up promptly for the classes they have been scheduled to teach. Missing a class is strictly prohibited and results in penalties. 6. 9iChat will provide the teaching materials related to each topic. Tutors must review the materials to make any corrections and edits before teaching. The corrected materials should be sent back to 9iChat. The average tutor preparation time is less than 10 minutes for a new topic; no preparation time is needed for repeat material. 7. The Tutor will need to read all company emails (once a week), and respond in a timely manner whenever necessary. The tutor may be required to attend the occasional online workshop/training session, and must carefully review all training materials. Compensation: Compensation begins at $15 for 1-on-1 and group classes that last 55-57 minutes. A 25-27 minute class will pay $7.50. REAL ENGLISH: Vocabulary and expressions to get a haircut

10:35
Your hair is becoming long and messy. What you need is a haircut. In this lesson, I will teach you some vocabulary and conversation points to use when you need to get a haircut at the hairdresser. We will talk about how to make an appointment, how to describe the style you want, and what to say during the cut instead of awkwardly staring at the mirror in silence. Watch this video to get the conversational skills you need to ensure you leave the salon looking your best. Don't tell me I need a haircut in the comments! TAKE THE QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/real-english-haircut-vocabulary-expressions/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there, and welcome to Benjamin's hairdressing salon. In today's video you are going to be learning the language for how to ask for a good haircut, and it's a quite technical lesson if you are perhaps a hairdresser wanting to come over and work in the U.K., which lots of people do. And then we're going to be looking at some terminology that will help you. So this is for professional hairdressers, and it's for people coming to get a haircut, speaking in English, to make sure you leave the hairdresser as you wanted to, and not with some totally wildly different haircut. Let's begin. First of all, you need to make sure that you get sat down on the chair to get your haircut. Two ways of doing this. Firstly, you could book over the telephone. You may want to check out some of my previous lessons on telephone English. So, if we're on the telephone, you could say: "Hello, there. Good morning. I was wondering if I might be able to book a haircut?" and then they'll say: "Certainly, sir" or "Certainly, madam. When were you thinking? When were you thinking?" That means: When do you want to have this haircut? So I'll say something like: "Tomorrow morning would be ideal. Tomorrow morning would be great." And then they'll say something, like: -"Is 9:30 okay?" -"Yup, that would be good." Or you may just be walking past a hairdressers, that I was the other day, and you might just go: "You know what? I'd like to have my hair cut now." So, something like: "Hello. Is it possible to get a haircut this evening? Now?" And they'll say: "Yes." If there's a queue, they might say something like: "How long...? How long am I going to have to wait for?" So we're using "going to", future tense: "How long am I going to have to wait for? Going to have to wait for?" So, you're there, you're in the hairdresser, now we need to communicate with them the haircut, the hairstyle that you would like. So, this is not an exhaustive list for women's haircuts, it's not something I know a huge amount on, but just a few phrases to get you going. In terms of hair, we talk about the weight in your hair. So if you've got thick hair, you're a lady and you want to remove some weight... You can use this is you're a guy as well, if you're a man. If you want to remove some weight, you say: "I'd like to remove some weight." It makes sense. It's thick. We want a little bit of a lighter haircut, you say: "I'd like to remove some weight." Now, an "undercut". So, "under", something is under and we are cutting. This means we have more up here than down here. This can be done in a subtle... So that means not obvious way, quite sort of smooth, but just kind of gradually goes down; or you can have the more extreme example, sort of shaved here, and thicker up here. So that is the undercut. "Dusting", my next terminology, next term. If you have some split ends and you don't want a whole cut, but you just want to cut off those split ends, so the end of your hair, they're just fraying a little bit, it's just a little bit messy, you want to tidy up, we call that "dusting". So if you say: "I'd like just a brief session of dusting. I'd just like you to dust my hair", hopefully they won't get a cloth out and start dusting it like you're some piece of furniture. Okay. "Point cutting", this is where we... I know these aren't proper hairdressing scissors. Point cutting is where they point down, and they'll just be cutting down like that. This is to just sort of just tidy the edges of the hair, the very end bits up and it kind of gives a slightly softer appearance on the end of those bits of hair. "Inch", so I sometimes get in trouble when I go to the hairdresser and I suddenly come back and it's much shorter than my wife was expecting it to be. So it's very important that you communicate exactly how much you want to be taken off. In the U.K. we deal in inches. Okay? So: "I would like to have just a couple of inches off", so that would be... That's two inches. So make sure you know what an inch is. That's one inch, that's two inches. On to the guys. Okay. So, in London at the moment, as in other places, beards are very on, very in. They're in fashion. You might want to sort of groom your beard, that means just a little cut of the beard. […]

Good Manners: What to Say and Do (Polite English)

14:50
http://www.engvid.com/ Learning English? Then you must learn about English culture and etiquette too. I'll tell you the one secret you MUST know to be accepted in North American and British cultures. You'll also learn 12 other good habits if you're studying, working, living, or traveling overseas. This is a cross-cultural English lesson you cannot afford to miss. Take a quiz on this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/good-manners-polite-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, my name is Rebecca from www.engvid.com. In today's lesson, we will be talking about good manners or what can also be referred to sometimes as cross-cultural skills. What does that mean? It's the skills that you need to function effectively in a different culture than your own. So for example: if I were to come to your country and learn your language, do you think that would be enough? Not really, because along with the language, I also need to learn what's acceptable, what's not okay in that particular culture. So today, we'll be talking about 12 things that you need to say and do when you're living or working in an English speaking environment. Okay? Let's get started. So first we'll talk about what you should say. The first one is using the word: "please". Now, everybody knows that you should say "please", but not everybody remembers to actually say it. So for example: if you go into a coffee shop, don't just say: "Coffee." Say: "Coffee, please." Or if you're asking someone else to do something, also remember: "Could you please turn off your cellphone?", for example. All right? Next: remember to say "thank you" whenever somebody does something. "Thank you", "You're welcome": these are phrases that we do use very often in English. And it could be for anything simple like somebody holding the door for you or it could be for something more elaborate like somebody giving you a birthday present. Okay? The way you say it, say it from your heart. Okay? "Thank you.", "Thank you very much." And so on. The next one is to say "sorry", or even better to say "I'm sorry", because "I'm sorry" is more personal. But otherwise, at least say "sorry". And again, you can say "sorry" for little things like perhaps stepping on someone's foot or if you bang into someone by mistake, you bump into someone by mistake somewhere in a crowded place, still apologize, say: "I'm sorry.", "I'm sorry.", "I'm sorry." Okay? We do use that quite often. Next one: "Excuse me." Now, "excuse me" you can say when you sneeze. Right? [Achoo!]. "Excuse me." Or if you need to ask somebody for some information, you can say: "Excuse me, would you know where the nearest subway is?" Right? So this is a very useful expression and it's also a polite expression. The next one is to remember to greet people and also to wish people. By greeting people, even at work if you're working in an English speaking environment, remember we do say "good morning", "good night", "happy birthday", "happy New Year", "congratulations". So greet people, and also wish them on the appropriate days. The next one might seem obvious also, but again, it's the way that you do it. Even if you work in an office, in the morning, we can say: "Hey, good morning. How are you?" And when you ask: "How are you?" even though you're not expected to give a full answer, but whatever answer someone gives you, remember to listen. Don't start talking right away. Wait to hear if the other person is saying: "Oh, pretty good. I'm fine. How are you?" Hear all of that before you start speaking about your own disposition, your own state of mind. Okay? Listen to the answer. All right? So these are six things that you must remember to do; they are taken for granted and they are expected of you. Next: let's look at what you should do. This seventh one here says: "Smile." Smiling creates a more friendly environment and it's certainly expected. So try to do that, again, it doesn't mean you have to keep smiling, but when you meet someone, give them a smile. If you don't smile, they might think that you're nervous, they might think you're angry or unhappy about something. Okay? Or they might take it a little bit aggressively. So try to smile, it makes the... It also gives people the message that everything is okay, not just that you're happy to meet them, but that everything is fine with you. So it says two things: something about you and something about the other person. Next: shake hands. Now, that's usually in a more business-like situation; in an office or somewhere, and certainly when you meet somebody for the first time. In an English speaking environment, you are expected to shake hands and shake hands rather firmly. Don't shake hands very weakly or just hold a part of the hand. Hold the entire hand and shake it firmly. All right? That's, again, part of the office expectation and the business norm.

Building Your First Website as an Online English Teacher

04:59
http://www.teachingeslonline.com/resources-teaching-english-online - I introduce three ways that you can build your first website for your online teaching business. /// WordPress (The All-in-One solution) /// My first recommendation is WordPress. This gives you the greatest customization moving forward. The good news is that there are so many themes that you can use for your website, including one-page designs (perfect for throwing something up there). I have a free tutorial on how to get started with WordPress here: http://www.teachingeslonline.com/build-website-wordpress/ /// LeadPages (The Easiest Way to Get Started) /// I use LeadPages on this site and for my learners. Mainly, I utilize it for landing pages, thank you pages, webinar pages etc. However, you can use it to have your first online presence. You don't need hosting for this (although, you could host it on your site) as you can host it on the LeadPage's server - it will be like this: yourname.leadpages.net. Once your main website is ready, you can redirect traffic from LeadPages to your site. This is for those who want a good-looking site with minimal effort. My affiliate link for LeadPages: http://link.leadpages.net/aff_c?offer_id=6&aff_id=10056 /// A Website Builder (The Middle Option) /// I created my first site using Yola. This is a website builder that makes it easy to create your website. Other options include Weebly, Wix, and SquareSpace. The upside of using one of these services is that you don't need to worry about the technical side of things. The downside is that you give up some control and it usually ends up being more expensive. You could always start with this option or LeadPages and then move over to WordPress when you're ready. ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. It's a non-scientific word that an everyday person came up with to describe the feeling characterized as a pleasurable tingling sensation felt in the head, scalp, back and other regions of the body in response to visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and/or cognitive stimuli, such as crinkling bags, hand movements, whispering, personal attention or watching someone perform a task. It's like goosebumps but much more pleasant and without the uncomfortable chills. ASMR videos are meant to intentionally induce this sensation in the viewer, often referred to as "tingles", but the videos also serve to provide a relaxing, calming and soothing experience for the viewer. Many people who do not experience ASMR still enjoy the videos for their calming and sleepy effect.

Leaving a $250,000 Year Job to Move to Vietnam Teach English & Sell T-Shirts

18:40
Recently I ran into a buddy of mine from college. It was a very random meeting, I was standing out behind my office getting some fresh air and ran into an old buddy from college I havn't seen in years. As we were catching up he told me he was heading over to Vietnam for a month or two. His girlfriend had moved over there to teach English and had started an e-commerce business. We wound up hanging out later that day and I learned a bit more about him and his gf. Apparently she went to Notre Dame, went on to Law School at University of Chicago. Said she had a job making about 250k a year, I imagine as a corporate lawyer. She wasn't happy doing it and decided to leave that very lucrative job to move over to Vietnam, teach English, volunteer at an orphanage and just take a step back. She wound up starting a clothing business. For those of you who don't know Vietnam is known for having a thriving textile business. I had a buddy who traveled over there for vacation and while visiting picked up a few custom tailored suits for a few hundred bucks a piece where as they would cost a few thousands a piece here in the states. I thought this girl had an interesting concept. Basically she setup an ecommerce store using BigCommerce. She works with local designers and manufacturers. How the site works, you go get measured for clothes. You then submit your measurements to the site. Any clothes you pick out are custom made for you based on your measurements, and surprisingly at a very reasonable cost. Most items seem to run $50 to $120 which is very reasonable for any clothing, let alone custom made clothing. For the same cost you would pay going to Macy's or Abercrombie or wherever you shop, you can get quality made, custom tailored clothing for the same cost if not cheaper. I thought this was a fantastic idea and also thought just the story as a whole was very motivational and inspirational. Someone deciding to follow their dreams instead of money. I'd love to get her on here to do a guest vlog or an interview. My buddy just got over to Vietnam probably about today, but has had a 3 day travel time so I'll let him catch back up on time and spend some time with his girl and then I'll ask about the interview. He may be doing a mens line to run alongside her womens line so I may have him come on as well. Just thought this was a cool story and wanted to share it.
