Autumn Leaves - Advanced (Bill Evans' Style) │Jazz Piano Lesson #35

05:55
Autumn Leaves Solo Piano and Trio Arrangement. Sheet Music Solo Piano Version): http://bit.ly/2oIZkjA Sheet Music (Trio Version): http://bit.ly/2pi2m1y Autumn Leaves Improvisation (Full Collection): https://goo.gl/MqDfev Jazz Piano Bundle Vol. 1 https://goo.gl/AzDrEa Blues Piano Bundle Vol. 1: https://goo.gl/YeedFl Notes: Solo Piano arrangement Bar 12: The chord symbol shows the right chord, but I missed to add a "b" front of the A note. Bar 31-32: I play the last G note on the "4+" instead of 1. When I wrote the arrangement 1 sounded really good, when I recorded it 4+ sounded even better :) Therefore I wanted to keep both in the video. Trio Arrangement: Bar 18: It is originally a Am7b5 chords, but Bill Evans plays a beautiful A7 chord these, so I wanted to add this to the arrangement, but keep the Am7b5 as a chord symbol, so we learn that we can often change the quality of the chords. If you know me a little bit, you already realized that I don't necessary follow my arrangements :) I like to keep it fresh, so I play around with the rhythm here and there. There are two cases when I would be very strict on following the music sheet as it is written: 1. It is a classical piano piece 2. It is a lesson for beginners about how to read music However, if you are a classically trained pianist I can understand that you watch this lesson and you might start to think: "This is not exactly the same! So where is the mistake? Is it in the sheet music or in his playing? What part should I follow?" The answer is very simple: Take these differences as a possible variations on the arrangement, because in the end this is what you really want to do: to play around with the rhythm and voicings every time you play through the tune. In this way, slowly, but surely you will stop think about right and wrong, and see everything as a variation. Don't get me wrong. I feel you man :) I started out as a classical pianist, but I was always into jazz music. When I entered the jazz school, I often told to my jazz piano teacher that he can't play this or that, because it is theoretically not correct, even if it is jazz :D Took me two years to understand what he means when he says: "Relax" Good luck and thanks for watching! How to play Latin Ballad Bolero Style - Jazz Piano Tutorial (BAH)

How to play Latin Ballad Bolero Style - Jazz Piano Tutorial Download the exercises for this lesson here: http://popjazz.online/download-bolero-exercises?utm_campaign=G-YT_%26_B_Bolero&utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=Video -- Can jazz piano be more romantic than playing the latin jazz bolero style? I don't think so! I found this amazing music a long time ago when I studied jazz piano and we had a Latin Jazz project. At the time I was also dating a woman that later became my wife. This, off course, may be one of the reasons to why I find the Latin Jazz piano to be so romantic, especially the Bolero style. I hope you enjoy this little lesson about the latin ballad bolero style. Easy Piano Improv: The 4 Minute Jazz Piano Tutorial

04:21
Check out my book: http://bit.do/billsbook Want to learn about jazz piano in more detail? Check out my series of easy but in-depth tutorials for beginners: http://goo.gl/wgd3Zl The point of this tutorial is to show you how easy piano improv can be. There's a lot of mystique surrounding jazz piano, blues and other keyboard improvisation styles. And it's true that to improvise at a high level takes a great deal of skill and practice. However, getting started with piano improvisation is dead easy. The trick is just to realise that you don't have to use the whole keyboard at once. You can start with just one note. The way I get started here is by improvising different rhythms on middle C. I then add a single note at a time, working my way up the blues scale. If you take this approach it allows you to start improvising with something very, very easy and push your boundaries gradually. In the whole tutorial I only cover five notes in the right-hand. But you can do an enormous amount with those five. For example, you don't have to play just one note at a time -- you can form simple chords and use them to create rhythmic effects and jazzy licks. It's important to remember that the piano is a percussion instrument, so you should really explore what you can do with rhythm and the quality of sound you get from hitting the keys in different ways. So far, so easy. Piano improvisation needs left-hand work as well, though. What I do in this tutorial is used a simple repeating left-hand pattern. There's quite a good lesson here: you can achieve an awful lot with a very simple left hand. As long as it provides some harmonic context and perhaps a little bit of rhythm, you don't need to go overboard. So there we go -- blues and jazz piano and other forms of piano improvisation don't need to be difficult, at least when you're getting started. If you want to become a competent improviser at the keyboard, you will of course have to do a lot of practice, and in the end the amount of effort you put in will determine how successful you are. But you shouldn't imagine that improvisation is some sort of magical skill that's only accessible to elite pianists. Anyone can do it!

Simple PIANO EXERCISES for Advanced JAZZ IMPROVISATION

37:56
Fundamental, simple and very powerful right hand modal jazz piano exercises. We take advantages of the physiology of the hand using primarily the 3 first fingers making a strong, simple and 'fast moving' foundation to be used when playing a jazz piano solo. We reuse the same unique 3 finger hand grip (lick) to play the pentatonic scale and all the 7 church modes. Furthermore we use the hand grip to play chromatic scale and off scale. Having done the groundwork we expand the 3 finger hand grip also using the 4. and 5. finger. The main idea in this lesson is to make great sound - but in a simple manner. We will avoid overthinking when playing a solo. We will use simple but powerful tools. The tools shall not make things complicated, instead they shall free our mind. Then we can use our energy on expression and feelings bringing forward the soul of music. I’m referring to the following videos from NewJazz: Lesson about playing jazzy blues and using blue notes: https://youtu.be/NZXNJbAzRiw Lesson about playing chromatic, atonal and non diatonic using structures, sequences and patterns: https://youtu.be/ItlFm9cyMQg Building the Circle of Church Modes: https://youtu.be/MJz9NFfWN-I Advanced lesson about modal theory: https://youtu.be/v5cw-WYNBgI Playlist with all music from NewJazz with Erik Frandsen on the drums: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd8gNAxPUcJy2HlJWnDOu8IT8xKXRptwS Make the circle of church modes. Johnson was a pioneer of the piano stride style, influenced by Scott Joplin who himself popularized ragtime. Fats Waller was his student and he influenced many other jazz giants such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum and Thelonious Monk to name but a few. They all drew their inspiration from his style, technique and compositions, developing their own harmonies and musicality. One of his most famous song is “Charleston”, part of the Broadway Show musical score “Runnin Wild”. “Charleston” was a hit in the 20’s, became a popular dance worldwide, and remains characteristic of that era. 1 Blue Moods, Sex 2 Charleston 3 Carolina Shout 4 Ain’t Misbehavin 5 Honeysuckle Rose 6 Blue Turning Grey Over You 7 Over the Bars 8 Riffs 9 Jingles 10 Squeeze Me 11 Snowy Morning Bles 12 Keep Off The Grass 13 My Fate Is In Your Hands 14 Eccentricity 15 If I Could Be With You 16 I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter JazzAndBluesExperience ♫ SUBSCRIBE HERE : http://bit.ly/10VoH4l (Re)Discover the Jazz and Blues greatest hits ! ♫ JazznBluesExperience is your channel for all the best jazz and blues music. Blue In Green - Eliane Elias Style - Jazz Piano Tutorial

04:56
The MIDI file of my piano solo as well as a PDF notation file and the MP3 backing track are all available on my web site at: http://www.Lot2Learn.com Most of you know I am a huge fan of Eliane Elias. Her playing embodies that of many of the great jazz pianists yet retains her own unique style - a characteristic of a truly great musician. Her version of the classic Jazz piece "Blue In Green" is both laid-back and energetic, played with a very cool slow Bossa feel. I have used her version as inspiration for my performance here, using a few of her classic stylizations. Production Notes: Performed on Roland FP-4 with a hint of Pianoteq 3.5 added for that full-bodied sound. ;-) On screen MIDI keyboard by MIDIKeyz available at www.MIDIKeyz.com Thanks for your continued support! - L2L

Easy Jazz Piano - I bet you $1,000,000 you can play it!!

Sign up for the Free Become a Piano Superhuman course here: http://www.bestpianoclass.com/ytdSuperhuman Alright here's an easy jazz piano progression for beginners. And when I say I bet you a million dollars you could play it, I mean it! As long as you follow the exact steps I outline in the video. It's basically a specific chord progression that LOOKS a lot harder than it is to play, but once you get the hang of it, it's VERY easy to improv over, even if you're a beginner. And yes, this is somewhat of a "piano trick". In other words, I'm not teaching the in-depth theory behind it, but it's a great intro into Jazz and Improvising. And if you like it, feel free to sign up for the Piano Superhuman course to get more in depth lessons: http://www.bestpianoclass.com/ytdSuperhuman Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1zd9irn Or connect with me here: https://www.facebook.com/PianoSuperhuman/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/zachevansmusic/ Watch me actually PLAY piano at my other YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/Keystroke3 Thanks for watching and subscribe if you want more online piano lessons and tutorials! -Zach Evans

A close look at a New Orleans piano blues

22:58
http://bit.do/billsbook The New Orleans blues progression is definitely worth knowing about if you’re into blues piano, but also because it crops up in lots of American roots music. It’s a variant of the twelve-bar blues that uses the “circle of fifths” rather than following the usual progression. In this tutorial I take a detailed look at how the New Orleans progression can work on the piano, and at what makes a good blues piano improvisation. It worth mentioning that this video isn’t really aimed at complete beginners, as I’ll assume that you’re familiar with some basic terminology. If you’re new to improvisation and blues piano, check out some of my earlier videos. The New Orleans progression is the same as standard twelve-bar until bar eight, where it follows the circle of fifths to eventually resolve back onto the root. This creates a very distinctive sound. There are plenty of different techniques that you can use to keep the right hand improvisation interesting and varied. Try incorporating trills, runs, crush notes, and other improvisation techniques that I’ve mentioned before. For the first part of this improvisation I stick to the basic blues scale, whereas towards the end I move away from this to use pentatonic scales. It’s not always necessary to stick rigidly to the beat, either. Playing ‘rubato’ or ‘tempo rubato’ (which means ‘stolen time’) means being free and easy with timing, by playing some bars faster and some slower. This creates an expressive effect, and is common in slow blues and jazz piano. It’s worth remembering that improvisation (especially in blues and jazz) is about much more than the notes you play: rhythm, method, and approach all influence whether your improvisation is effective. If you enjoyed this video you might also be interested in my book, How to Really Play the Piano, which is a great beginners’ guide to improvisation and blues piano. You might also enjoy some of my other videos, and my website www.billspianopages.com

How To Play BeBop 🎹😃 │Jazz Piano Lesson │ Jazz Licks (Donna Lee)

How To Play BeBop - Jazz Piano Lesson Download the exercises for this lesson here: http://popjazz.online/download-bebop-exercises?utm_campaign=G-YT_%26_B_BeBop&utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=Video -- Here is how I play bebop and how you can do the same by using jazz licks and jazz scales. Use the same principles when you play donna lee and other jazz standards. The bebop style is very fun to play, but it requires a lot of practicing to be able to play in faster tempos. I have not practiced so much the bebop scale to be able to play like this, but many people swear to the bebop scale. I like better to work with the chromatic scale as well as circling around notes. I hope you enjoyed this video! Hedgehog Plays Piano. Jazz Style!

00:08
Piano Cool re Jazz on the left !! Hedgehog swings great style. A Hedgehog is any of the spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae, which is in order Erinaceomorpha. There are seventeen species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and New Zealand (by introduction). There are no hedgehogs native to Australia, and no living species native to the Americas. Hedgehogs share distant ancestry with shrews (family Soricidae), with gymnures possibly being the intermediate link, and have changed little over the last 15 million years. Like many of the first mammals, they have adapted to a nocturnal way of life. Hedgehogs' spiny protection resembles that of the unrelated rodent porcupines and monotreme echidnas. The name hedgehog came into use around the year 1450, derived from the Middle English heyghoge, from heyg, hegge ("hedge"), because it frequents hedgerows, and hoge, hogge ("hog"), from its piglike snout. Other names include urchin, hedgepig and furze-pig. The collective noun for a group of hedgehogs is array or prickle. Cocktail piano || Learning A Song In Cocktail Piano Style

22:15
Cocktail piano is a really popular style that I get a lot of requests for. So in this tutorial we're going to take the bare bones of a the verse section of a song - melody and chords - and look at the ways we can adapt it to this particular piano style. My book on cocktail piano: http://www.billspianopages.com/cocktail We'll look at the basics of chord extension, basic chord substitution, arpeggiated runs, chordal and melodic improvisation and a few other useful tips. This kind of lounge piano style is, as you might know, pretty closely related to jazz, and uses a lot of jazz piano techniques when it comes to messing around with chords and using different scales like pentatonic and blues for melodic improvisation. In actual fact, working on the cocktail style can be a very good way into jazz, as it uses many of the same techniques but within the context of a much freer and easier tempo: you don't have the pressure of a solid metronome beat. +++LINKS+++ My other book: http://www.billspianopages.com/how-to-really Patreon: www.patreon.com/billhilton Jazz for beginners playlist: https://goo.gl/NQoxci Piano for complete beginners playlist: https://goo.gl/5UqKP2 Facebook: http://fb.me/billhiltonpiano Twitter: http://twitter.com/billhilton

On Green Dolphin Street - Jazz Piano Tutorial

This being one of the classic jazz standards, I thought I would post a more traditional version as opposed to the 7/4 versions I have already posted. Many times this is played as a latin to swing (the "A" parts played latin and the bridge played swing style) but I have kept this in a latin style throughout. I have tried to add a few annotations explaining parts of the improvisation. As always, thanks for listening! - Roger Tech Notes: Roland FP-4 keyboard piano sound run through a VST tube-amp simulator to slightly warm the tone. How To Play Piano in a Jazz BIG Band (7 Steps) Download the exercises for this lesson here: http://popjazz.online/download-BigBand-exercises?utm_campaign=G-YT_%26_B_BigBand&utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=Video To play piano in a jazz big band can be both fun and challenging! Here is a demonstration of what you could take into consideration if you're playing in a jazz big band. The steps mentioned in this lesson is 1. Prepare a lot for big band rehearsals. 2. Play the chords exactly like they are written. For example a G7(b9#11) should not be played as a G13 3. Play upper structure voicings to better stand out and get heard. 4. Support the soloist with suitable chords and syncopations. You could even drop out and let the guitarist do his job 5. Play three types of fills. - The fills that are written in the sheet - Call/response fills - Improvised fills - if it fits with the rest of the band 6. Listen listen listen. Since there is not one right way to do things, you've got to listen to what is going on around you. That will help you improvise the voicings you're playing 7. Get to know the arrangement. Especially the parts where you have a sol Download the exercises for this lesson here: http://popjazz.online/download-BigBand-exercises?utm_campaign=G-YT_%26_B_BigBand&utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=Video ================================================== **Click Below to SUBSCRIBE for More Videos: http://bit.ly/JazzPianoLessons ================================================== PopJazzOnline.com Interactive Piano Lessons Online https://PopJazzOnline.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/popjazzonline/ Founder: Gjermund Sivertsen Get Free Training: Smart Piano Practicing. 7 Secrets To Practice Piano Smarter: http://popjazz.online/freepracticingcourse ================================================== How To Play Piano in a Jazz BIG Band (7 Steps): https://youtu.be/5yh2AnGx1JA

The 5 Types of 7th Chords for Jazz Piano

10:41
Want more FREE lessons?... http://bit.ly/get-5-free-lessons A seventh chord is a triad which has been extended to include the 7th. Seventh chords create a much fuller sound than triads and are used in jazz music to create richer harmonic progressions. There are 5 main types of seventh chord that you need to learn. Learning these chords and understanding their function in harmony is essential for learning jazz piano. The vast majority of chords you will come across in jazz will be one of these 5 chord types. Lesson Chapters: 0:10 Introduction 0:45 Major 7th Chords 1:26 Dominant 7th Chords 2:50 Minor 7th Chords 3:56 Minor 7 b5 Chords (Half Diminished Chords) 5:14 Diminished 7th Chords 6:12 How To Practice 7th Chords 7:45 Inverting 7th Chords Visit http://ww.pianogroove.com to download the 7th chords worksheet containing the 5 types of 7th chord in all 12 keys. Major 7th Chords First of all we have the major 7th chord. The major seventh chord is built by playing the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th notes of the major scale. The interval relationship is root, major 3rd, perfect fifth, major 7rd. In the key of C, the root of the chord is C, the major 3rd is E, the 5th is G and the major 7th is B. We can also build a major 7th chord from a major triad with a major third stacked on top. Dominant 7th Chords The dominant 7 is a very important chord. It has an unstable sound and wants to resolve to a major chord a fifth away. Dominant chords give movement & tension to a piece of music Dominant chords are built by playing the 1st , 3rd , 5th and flat 7th of the major scale. A quick way to build a dominant chord is to play the major chord and then lower the 7th note by half a step. We can also build a dominant 7th chord from a major triad and a minor third stacked on top. The interval relationship of dominant chords is root, major 3rd, perfect 5th, minor 7th. It’s important to note the presence of the tritone interval in the chord. This is what gives the chord it’s unstable and tense harmonic quality. If you are unsure on what a tritone is, watch the lesson on intervals. Minor 7th Chords The minor 7th chord is built in the same way as the major 7th chord except we use the 1,3,5 & 7 from the natural minor scale. The interval relationship is root, minor 3rd, perfect fifth, minor 7th. To find out the natural minor scale you simply take the major scale and lower the 3rd, 6th & 7th notes. (demonstrate in C) You can also build a minor 7th chord by playing the major 7th chord and then lowering the 3rd and 7th note by a half step. Alternatively, play the dominant chord and lower the third by half a step. We can also build a minor 7th chord from a minor triad with a minor triad stacked on top. Minor 7 b5 Chords The minor 7 flat 5 chord, also known as the half diminished chord is most commonly used as the 2 chord in a minor 251 progression (run through a minor 251 – point to lesson) Minor 7 flat 5 chords are built using the 1, b3, b5 and b7 of the major scale. A simpler way to build a half diminished chord is to play the minor chord of the key and flatten the 5. We can also build a minor 7th chord from a diminished triad with a major third stacked on top. The interval relationship of a half diminished chord is root, minor 3rd, diminished 5th & minor 7th. Diminished 7th Chords Finally we have the diminished 7th chord. Diminished 7ths are the strangest sounding chords of those we have covered so far. A diminished chord is 3 stacked minor thirds so the interval relationship is root, minor third, minor third, diminished 7th You could also look at diminished chords as a minor 7 flat 5 with a double flatted 7. We can also build a diminished 7th chord with a diminished triad and a minor third stacked on top – here it is. The diminished chord does not have a definite tonal center which makes them sound ambiguous. You can use this as a device to add tension to a piece and the resolve the chord. The best thing about diminished chords is that you only have to learn 3 of them for all 12 keys as when you invert the chord it creates a diminished chord a minor third above. Inverting 7th Chords After you can build these chords in root position, you’ll need to learn the different inversions. To invert a chord simply take the bottom note and put it on top. The bass note is now the third of the chord - this is what we call the first inversion. Now invert the chord again by putting the lowest note on the top. The bass note is now the fifth of the chord – this what we call the second inversion. Finally, you can invert the chord one more time (all four note chords can be inverted 3 times) The bass the note is now the 7th of the chord. This is what we call the third inversion. Note: if you invert the chord again you will be back at root position.

Jazz Piano Chord Voicings - Bud Powell Voicings

If you like this Jazz Piano Tutorial, please subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/c/WalkThatBass For more information check out my website: http://www.thejazzpianosite.com/jazz-piano-lessons/jazz-chord-voicings/powell-voicings/ In this series of videos I cover jazz piano voicings. I'll go through a number of different voicings which will make any jazz song sound strong and professional. This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Bud Powell style voicings. These are really simple two note voicings that can be played lower down on the piano (compared to rootless or Monk voicings), thus giving your song a bit more of a bass part. These types of shell voicings were played by early bebop pianists. They are great at a fast tempo because they are simple to play and give the improviser a lot of room and options to improvise. This voicing simply consists of playing: Root & either 3rd, 6th, 7th or 10th of a chord. That's it. Nice and simple, but it still gives a strong and bassy sound.
