The MG brand's improved MG3 supermini is a sporty value-orientated proposition that now boasts a smarter look and a longer warranty. The MG3 is a supermini you probably won't have considered. Yet it's fun to drive, practical to own and vastly more affordable than the conventional choices in this segment. If you don't need class-leading efficiency and you're prepared to forgive a few rough edges in return for the big savings on offer, then in this improved form, it could rank as a very clever choice. Background There's something about the two letters 'MG' that strikes a chord in the British consciousness. The brand named after 'Morris Garages' way back in 1924 has been a part of our automotive heritage for nearly a century. And still they come: take this car, the MG3 supermini. As with this model's MG GS Crossover stablemate, it's true to say that this car is properly British-developed, with its styling and drive dynamics created by many of the same talented folk who at the turn of the century brought us the surprisingly satisfying MG ZR, ZS and ZT family performance models. Chinese manufacturing clout also means the brand can bring this Fiesta-sized supermini to market for up to 30% less than obvious rivals. Which leaves MG able to claim what they see as an unbeatable combination of fun and value for this car. Does it deliver that in this revised guise? Let's find out. Driving Experience As usual with the MG3, the only engine option is a 1.5-litre petrol unit that MG owners SAIC bought in from GM, though a little compensation comes with the news that it has in more recent times been brought up to cleaner Euro6 standards and develops a healthy 105bhp, substantially more than most direct rivals can offer. That means a reasonable turn of speed, rest to sixty two achievable in 10.4s en route to a 108mph top speed. Though it's true that most of this car is Chinese, many of the bits that really matter are British through and through - an observation especially true when it comes to the elements concerned with ride and handling. There are suppler-riding cars in this class and more sportily-suspended ones, but few models of this kind that I can think of achieve a better combination of both over good roads and bad. Which for a first attempt in this segment, is quite an astonishing achievement for the Longbridge-based development team given that the class in question contains models of the talent of Ford's Fiesta. Body roll is brilliantly controlled, grip is prodigious and there's better feedback through the steering than in most Gtis we've driven, primarily perhaps because modern era electric steering hasn't made it to MG yet. The downside of that is that the helm is heavy during parking manoeuvres in the kind of urban environment where the option of an automatic gearbox would be nice to have. Design and Build The main change to this revised MG3 is revised exterior front end styling which adds what the brand calls a 'star-rider' grille. This frames the brand's famous octagonal logo. The company claims it's "a distinctive statement of modern British style designed to target young and style conscious buyers". Make of that what you will. The interior will come as a welcome relief to anybody who's a bit baffled by the complexity and deep technology of many modern superminis. Climb out of a Peugeot 208, with its tablet computer style central infotainment system and, without being unduly blunt, it's very different. Still, the MG3 is tidy inside with seats that look and feel very Volkswagen. In the lightly upgraded cabin of this revised model, there are a few white touches around the stereo, on the steering wheel, the door pulls, handbrake and gear lever but aside from that, everything is uniformly grey. Exterior design of the Volkswagen Touareg - tailor-made for freedom Technically, the new Touareg is based on the Group's modular longitudinal matrix (MLB); it covers models with longitudinally mounted engines and gearboxes starting with the upper mid-size class. In contrast to the previous model, the third generation is moderately wider and longer, but a little lower. In the right hands with great vision and leadership, sport can advance social progress like almost no other.” Fuller has been a vocal critic of FIFA and other international sporting organizations. He says, “Today sport at the international level is not in the right hands. Immense scandals in soccer (FIFA), athletics (IAAF) inc doping, cycling (UCI and Lance Armstrong affair), tennis (ITF and match fixing) continue to amaze and disappoint. The public (consumer to some) has genuinely lost faith in what it is watching as money becomes bigger and more important.” “Sports that historically were amateur that have over short periods of time embraced ever increasing dollars at play, have mostly failed to make the transition with the most egregious examples entailing massive corruption. SKINS has been actively championing reform for the last 4 years, driven initially by the Lance Armstrong affair, and has been successful in reform of cycling, doping, IOC, cricket and soccer to one degree or another,” he boasts. The result is Speedo’s most advanced swimwear and equipment technology to date, strengthening Speedo’s world class reputation as one of the most innovative brands in sport. The LZR Pure Intent is the first swimsuit to use a smart fusion of three fabrics, allowing for additional compression in targeted areas to streamline, increase power and reduce drag. Both swimsuits will be available in black as well as psycho red colourways, to allow swimmers to express their own personalities after research revealed some athletes prefer bright colours that allow them to feel empowered and energised, whilst others prefer the powerful and strength-like focus of black. Developed in Speedo’s global R&D facility, the Aqualab, a team (including experts in textile technology garment engineering, sports science, computational fluid dynamics, testing protocols and design) covered 350,000 miles throughout a three-year testing and development programme. Speedo placed real importance in consulting with swimmers throughout the iterative process to ensure they could make the best suit possible. Sports Thoughts#10: The Facility Fallacy - If You Build it, They Still Won't Come

One of the greatest myths in sport is the Facility Fallacy: the belief that if you build it..."they" - i.e. kids, families, athletes, participants etc. will come. There is a commonly held view in the sports industry that the larger and the better your sports facilities are, the more likely it is that people will come and play your sport. Whilst having access to reasonable standard facilities is essential in many sports, e.g. swimmers must have access to a swimming pool, rowers need long straight stretches of water, etc. facilities are rarely the limiting factor when it comes to sustainable growth in sports participation. Again - as I've said on numerous posts - it's no good coming up with a great solution to the wrong problem! In other words, new facilities are only the solution, IF having poor standard facilities was the actual problem. For the most part sports are not being held back by a lack of facilities: sport is being held back by sport. It's not a lack of amazing football fields that's holding football back: it's the poor coaching, awful management practices and antiquated approaches to junior athlete development at Club level that's causing most of their problems. It's the same in all sports. Facilities are rarely the real problem. Here's an example. Imagine there's a sporting club in your area. The standard of coaching is poor. The Club is manage unprofessionally. Communication systems are awful - no one knows what's going on. Selection of teams is done inconsistently without any clear guidelines or transparent policies. Political battles and personality conflicts plague the Club. And also... in addition to all the above...the facilities are of a relatively poor standard. So the Club somehow comes into a lot of money and builds world class, state of the art facilities - new training facilities, a large, well equipped gym, brand new men's and women's change-rooms, a recovery centre.....it's got it all! What have you got now? Poor standard coaching. Terrible management practices. Awful communication systems. An environment polluted by politics and personalities. In other words - nothing has changed. You've still got a terrible sporting environment incapable of delivering quality sports experiences for children and families - you just get to do it in a nice, shiny, new facility. The way sporting facilities get funded and built is changing very rapidly. In the past, Governments have often "caved" in. They've bent to local political pressures and built sporting facilities basically to keep the peace with local sporting organizations. However, increasingly Local, Regional and State governments are starting to show a reluctance to build facilities to solve management problems and are looking for better ways to deliver better sports services for their communities. For example, around the world we're seeing a growth in the development of sporting "hubs" and multi-purpose sports facilities. As a State Government Sports Minister said to me recently, "When we receive applications and proposals for the building and development of sports specific facilities from individual sporting Clubs or organizations, they do to the bottom of the funding "pile". The days of funding sporting facility projects for individual Clubs for their exclusive use are over. What goes to the top of the funding "pile" are projects which demonstrate collaboration, co-operation and a shared approach to growing sport in our communities". If you're seeing a dramatic fall in the number of kids playing your sport, don't waste your time, energy and money working to build new facilities. Invest in your people. Help your coaches to get better at getting better. Improve your customer relations practices. Become more effective at engaging with kids and families. Improve your management and administration practices. Streamline your communication systems. Hinda Miller has enjoyed a long career as an entrepreneur, elected state official, corporate executive, board member, certified coach, educator and business consultant specializing in entrepreneurship and advancement of women. Hinda co-founded Jogbra, Inc. in 1977, the original maker of the "jogbra" women's sports garment. Together with her business partner, Lisa Lindahl, she identified the need for an undergarment that would support a woman’s breasts while running and created a prototype by sewing two jockstraps together. The original Jogbra is part of the collection at the Smithsonian Institute and the Metropolitan Museum of Art costume collection. With a superb team, Miller built an international apparel brand with an emphasis on sportsbra technology until the company was sold to Playtex Apparel in 1990. The following year, Playtex Apparel was sold to the Sara Lee Corporation. Throughout these transitions, Miller continued to serve as President and became CEO of the Champion Jogbra division of Sara Lee in 1994. She left the company in 1997 to pursue other interests, including teaching at the University of Vermont’s Business School. For a decade, Hinda served as a Vermont State Senator, one of 30 individuals elected to the Vermont Senate. She served on the economic development and appropriations committees. In 2010, she was awarded Legislator of the Year by Vermont Businesses of Social Responsibility. As board member of Keurig Green Mountain; NASDAQ: GMCR, since 1999, she is chair of Sustainability Committee. She serves a chair of University of Vermont’s Sustainable Entrepreneurship MBA program. She also earned certification from the International Coach Federation and Gestalt International Study Center to help others achieve their professional goals. She lives in Burlington, Vermont, USA, with her husband. They have two adult children making their way in the world. Hinda also has been a student and teacher of yoga for over 30 years.

The model has undergone a redesign for 2018, which sees it get slightly larger—not surprising given that the X1 is on hand, soon to be joined by the new X2, for buyers seeking something smaller. The X3 also becomes a more full-fledged member of the BMW family with its upgraded interior. And at a time when some of the brand’s passenger-car offerings have strayed from BMW’s historically strong dynamics, the new X3 makes an encouraging showing there as well. Highs Chassis tuning like BMWs of old, improved interior, plenty of passenger and cargo space. Lows Imprecise variable-ratio steering, goofy electronic shifter, the entry-level four pales next to the six-cylinder. Tighten Up As before, the X3 is offered with four or six cylinders under the hood, both engines bolstered by a turbocharger. Their configuration and displacement are the same, but both engines are new to the model. Although the 30i designation suggests that BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-six is present, it actually has a 2.0-liter inline-four. (The 28i was the previous four-cylinder X3). The six-cylinder version has been elevated to M Performance status and is now badged X3 M40i. Both models come with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The new 2.0-liter sees horsepower increase from 240 to 248, while the torque peak falls slightly, from 260 lb-ft to 258. The B46 powerplant’s output is nothing extraordinary, but the twin-scroll turbo effectively masks any signs of lag, making for precise and predictable throttle response. This engine punches above its weight in other applications (330i, 530i), but here it feels a tad overmatched. There’s nothing to criticize in the nature of its power delivery or its pairing with the eight-speed, but it’s a far cry from the M40i’s silken and muscular inline-six, which boasts 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. BMW’s turbo six is an engine from the gods, and the M40i feels as quick as a Porsche Macan GTS. With either engine, the eight-speed automatic, unfortunately, is controlled via BMW’s annoying and unintuitive electronic shifter that is spreading throughout the lineup. We can’t fault the transmission’s behavior, though, which is smooth and responsive. Plus, standard paddle shifters are on hand should the driver want to take control. The X3 30i earns EPA fuel-economy ratings of 22 mpg city and 29 highway, both increases of 1 mpg over the outgoing X3 28i. The city number falls between those of the Audi Q5 (23 mpg) and the all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz GLC300 (21 mpg), while the BMW’s highway figure tops both competitors’. The six-cylinder X3 M40i also manages increases of 1 mpg over its predecessor in both EPA measures, with ratings of 20/27 mpg city/highway. More encouragingly, the X3 chassis suffers none of the float or sloppiness that plagues much of the recent BMW lineup. The 30i we drove was fitted with the Dynamic Handling package ($1400), which brought adaptive dampers, Variable Sport Steering, M Sport brakes, and a fourth driving mode—Adaptive—in addition to Eco Pro, Sport, and the default Comfort. Even Comfort mode doesn’t have the wallow we’ve seen in BMWs of late; the X3 is plenty capable in corners. Sport tightens the reins noticeably, which is fine where the roads are glass smooth but might be too much when they’re not. The M40i starts out with a firmer suspension, and our example added the adaptive dampers (a stand-alone option that’s $1000 on the 30i and $700 on the M40i). The net result is that this is a rare modern BMW that doesn’t require you to switch it out of Comfort mode and into Sport the minute you turn it on. The M40i’s body control is exemplary, and even its standard Variable Sport Steering is not overboosted. The variable steering is optional on the X3 30i, however, and there we’d be inclined to skip it. In the lower-spec model, it fails to build effort as you wind on more lock, instead seeming to increase assist; switching to Sport mode increases overall effort, masking this behavior. Luxury and Practicality The X3’s starting price has increased by $2400, mostly because there’s no rear-drive version anymore. (Compared with the previous all-wheel-drive model, the new X3’s price sees a $400 increase.) The X3 30i opens at $43,445—versus $42,475 for the Q5 and $43,045 for the GLC 4Matic, its two most obvious competitors—whereas the X3 M40i starts at $55,295. The new X3 is a well-rounded performer, particularly the M40i, and it also is now a better ambassador for its brand.
