16 families sharing one apartment - the days of the Kommunalkas seem to be back in St. Petersburg. Communal apartments in older buildings are a relic of the Soviet era and starkly out of step with the grandeur of the world-famous Venice of the North.

13 Creepiest Abandonned Soviet Era Places
From CREEPY Train Stations, to some mega monuments; These are 13 Creepiest Abandoned Soviet Era Places ! Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 6. Mongolian Air Base Although it wasn’t official, Mongolia was basically a part of the Soviet union but they didn’t want to seem to seem imperialistic and put the Chinese on alert. With communist countries on both sides, it was heavily influenced by both powerful nations, but acted as a satellite nation to the USSR. In the 1970’s this airbase was added and was seen as a way to protect themselves in case there was any territorial disputes with China and here we see this statue with a fighter jet. These armored aircraft shelters, you see in this photo were made to protect expense aircraft from potential attacks and are designed with reinforced concrete. This random statue which is now close to a grazing pasture for cattle, has an inscription on it that states,”Glory to the Communist Party of Soviet Union. These large buildings housed the officers and their soldiers in this very isolated environment. 5. Abandoned Missile Factory This young Russian girl by the name of Lana Sator, risked getting in huge trouble to take these photos of an abandoned Russian Missile factory near Moscow. Somehow, she claims that she didn’t come across one security guard. The Russians were excellent rocket and missile producers and it’s believed that this factory belonged to liquid fuel rocket manufacturers that constructed liquid fuel rockets for spacecraft. Here we see the complex machinery that was needed to make these things that send people to the final frontier. It’s still unsure whether or not this building is in service or not but the fact that she was able to get in so easily would lead to believe it’s abandoned. Whatever the case, we really hope Lana didn’t go to Russian prison or in a work camp in Siberia. 4. Hungarian Train Station This Iconic Soviet Style locomotive was built in 1941 and saw use during the Soviet Era. The communist red star symbol is proudly displayed in the front of the train. An urban explorer by the name of Rebecca Bathory captured these images while doing some urban exploring in the Hungarian countryside. She claims it was quite a spooky experience coming here to take photos and had never seen such an epic train in all her life. 3. Kharkov Tank Repair Facility Do you need a place scrap up metal to build a tank with for the zombie apocalypse? This might be the place. Located in the Ukraine, this place was full of Soviet built T-80s, T-64s and T-72 tanks. Someone named Pasha broke into the abandoned facility to capture these great photos. Here we got tanks on tanks on tanks! There’s also tank engines, tank parts, wires, treads, and pretty much everything you can imagine that’s tank related is found here. It used to be place where a large amount of mechanics would repair tanks back to their former glory but as far as we can tell, the Ukraine isn’t doing anything with these tanks anymore. 2. Abandoned Places of Abkhazia The territory of Abkhazia, located in the country of Georgia, was one of the most disputed territories in the Soviet Union. They constructed intimidating buildings in order to impose their rule. Here in this photo we see a factory that was left over during the Soviet era, and is left rusting in present times. You can see on the inside it’s still covered in debris and nothing here can be repaired This former government building has been neglected and on the inside you can easily see the staircase and walls littered with dust. The scenery around this train station is quite remarkable but the building itself is in deplorable condition. Old government buildings and other places still have soviet era propaganda located within Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Possible the most well known place on this list, the Chernobyl exclusion zone has been shut off from the public due to radioactive contamination. So extreme tourists normally have to pay a hefty fee to the right people for a quick tour. The most populated city in this zone was the city of Pripyat just two miles for the power plant where the disaster took place. This city housed 50,000 people, including wealthy scientists and the ones who worked at the Chernobyl power plant. The bumper cars here were once a popular attraction for the families of the workers here. Very few dare to actually venture off to the power plant but Pripyat is safe but only for a few hours. Nature has began to thrive and reclaim this land once again. Some graffiti artists managed to break in here and painted this wall with a creepy looking baby. Very few were prepared for something like this and valuables were left behind like we see from this teddy bear with no owner. The hallways of these abandoned apartment buildings seem like the perfect setting for a horror film. This ferris wheel never saw any actual riders and was set to open a week before the meltdown.

Soviet Paradise: restorers re-discover the magnificence of Stalin-era architecture
Watch more films about Russian architecture: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/russian-architecture/ VDNKh or the National Agricultural Exhibition Centre in Moscow was built in the late 1930s on the order of Stalin. It was meant to inspire Soviet people who lived a hard life of poverty and astonish the whole world. Its many pavilions were created in a multitude of architectural styles and elaborately decorated by the best artists and sculptors of the USSR. Many of its sights became iconic symbols of Moscow: Vera Mukhina's sculpture Worker and Kolkhoz Woman, the golden fountain, the space rocket. But the Soviet people had to pay a great price for this splendour. Several thousand convicts from the Gulag were used to construct VDNKh and its initial architect, Vyacheslav Oltarzhevsky, was arrested for political reasons and sent into exile for 5 years. After Stalin's death, the controversial feeling conveyed by the place led to its slow decay. During Khrushchev's rule, the opulence of many pavilions was hidden under aluminum panels while many parts of the park fell into disuse. Slowly but surely, the place meant to commemorate the country's strength turned into the exact opposite. But as time passes, the association of VDNKh as a reminder of an oppressive regime wanes. What remains is the admiration of its beauty and the sense of duty to preserve and restore this unique architectural complex. As a reward for its renovation, VDNKh continues to present its restorers with a wealth of hidden treasures. Communal Apartment Of The USSR. "Real Russia" ep.18
https://www.patreon.com/realrussia Communal Apartment appeared in the Soviet Union following the Russian revolution. They are emerged as a response to the housing crisis in urban areas and were a product of the "new collective vision of the future". A communal apartment was typically shared between two to seven families. Each family had it own room, which served as a living room, dining room, and bedroom for the entire family. The hallways, kitchen, bathroom and telephone were shared among all the residents. The communal apartment was the predominant form of housing in the USSR for generations, and still exist in "the most fashionable central districts of large Russian cities." In this video we used the fragment of absolutely great and popular Russian movie "Stilyagi" (2008) directed by Valery Todorovsky. English lyrics of the song "Man And Cat" A man and his cat, crying by the window Grey rain pouring all over the glass Ambulance is on its way, for the man and cat That poor man's brain is sick and cramping The doctor is riding through the snowy plains Carrying with him the medicinal powder The man and his cat will take that powder And their sorrow will be gone, and their anguish too The man and his cat are counting down the days Grey ceiling, instead of a blue sky The man and his cat are flying at night Only the unprophetic dream doesn't give them wings Where are you, where are you, where are you white carriage? The man is shouting, in between the toilet's walls But the walls can't hear him, pipes run just like veins And the flush tank rattles, like a crazy heart Our t-shirts in support to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHJDReiziKU

Soviet-era apartment gets imperial-style makeover
(10 Dec 2016) A Kiev pensioner has transformed part of the stairwell of his building by decorating it with gilded plasterwork and art reproductions, giving the space a complete imperial-style makeover. From the outside, the Soviet-style block of apartments in Kiev's residential area where Volodymyr Chaika lives looks nothing but ordinary. Chaika spent almost 16 years decorating the corridor, walls and ceiling of the stairwell on the 7th floor of the building where he lives, as well as two other floors. He installed ornamental plaster mouldings and art reproductions, and the stairwell received a completely new look, resembling a palace of imperial times, although he describes the style as being his own. For Chaika, the new decoration is a dream come true, which he's been dreaming of since childhood. "When I come here I recall the books I've read and castles I've seen," he said. His favourite portraits in the stairwell are the reproduction of Mona Lisa, by Leonardo da Vinci, and a few other paintings by Russian artist Karl Bryullov. Volodymyr says he feels happy to look at his work everyday when he leaves his apartment, and his neighbours are also pleased with the area's new look. The new decoration has even attracted teenagers from the area, who ask for permission to enter the building and spend time in the stairwell, amongst well-known portraits and gilded plasterwork. Communal Flats And Khrushchyovkas: A Look Back At Soviet Housing
Twenty-five years ago, the Soviet Union ceased to exist, ushering in rapid and sweeping changes. Those who lived through the last decades of the U.S.S.R. remember an era of housing shortages, when ordinary citizens had little say in where they lived, or with whom. Scary Soviet Era Elevator & Apartment Building
Poorly maintained apartment buildings left over from Soviet occupation. Many times half of the buildings are torn down and people still live in the other half. Here I take you up an elevator in Armenia. This apartment among many have been left from Soviet Occupation. There are no maintenance crews who take care of elevators it's up to the residence of the apartment building to do what they can. This one had been broken for several weeks and since I was on the 10th floor I risked taking the elevator. The floor was rotted out in sections due to the windows of the building being broke allowing rain to run down the elevator shaft. Also, criminals will hide in the darkness to steal your money or groceries.

This film treats Russia’s very difficult pathway to democracy and market economy using the former Soviet automobile factory, Zil, as a looking-glass. Workers, prominent Moscow figures, religious as well as political, all testify, in their own way, to the painful changes going on in Russia as a nation and the rebirth of its long-lost religion. But behind the fancy facades, hundreds of thousands of the city's residents live in conditions unimaginable in any major European city. STORYLINE St Petersburg has always been a city of innovation. As the Imperial Capital, it was at the forefront of European culture, attracting the best writers, artists and musicians. And for the Bolsheviks, it was the cradle of the Russian Revolution. Thus, the "kommunalka" was born. The measure was supposed to be temporary. The high ceilings are a reminder of the former grandeur of the building.
