Secrets of Underground London - Original Narration
This Documentary has been uploaded for educational purposes. No copyright infringement is intended. Original programme description: On the surface, London is a buzzing metropolis. But underneath lies secret, hidden worlds, all but forgotten by the millions of people above. These places make up the countless layers of London, and each tells a unique story of the city’s past - successes and failures; victories and tragedies. When the Romans founded settlements along the River Thames during the 1st century AD, they laid down the very first layer of one of the world’s greatest cities. Long buried pieces of the original Roman town still survive to this day – statues, walls, even an entire amphitheatre, where fierce gladiators once fought…and died for glory. London has seen more than its fair share of death over the centuries. The terrible Plague of the 14th century killed more than half of the population in just two years; and the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666 left vast swathes of the city’s timber framed buildings in ashes. These tragic events are forever carved into London’s subterranean landscape – gruesome plague pits filled with thousands of corpses, and eerie mines excavated for the materials to rebuild the city. But the Victorians were the true masters of the underground; from the creation of the first tunnel under a river to the foundation of one of the world’s most iconic public transport systems. While 19th century engineers believed no goal was out of reach, it often meant that the highest price was paid for by workers - many men tragically lost their lives building the wonders of the industrial age. During the German bombing campaign of London during WWII the underground played a role of life or death. Many railway or ‘Tube’ stations were transformed into huge air raid shelters, and top secret bunkers enabled Churchill’s government to fight the war from within the city. The Prime Minister even had a private underground restroom…hidden inside? A direct hotline to the White House! The Underground has always been the perfect place to store precious items; from the deep tunnel storage of priceless works of art during the war, to impenetrable vaults packed with silver. But the British Library stores a truly astonishing collection of nearly 1.5 million items, from modern novels to priceless historical documents, all available at the exact time a visitor wants it, whether they're coming from Notting Hill or Nantucket. In a city as densely packed as this, sometimes the only way for a building to develop is to build down – and that's exactly what the British Museum is doing. Surrounded by 300 year old buildings and containing the wonders of human civilization, any construction work here is a perilous operation. But four new subterranean levels will breathe a new lease of life into this 260 year old institution, paving the way for the next generation. Discover amazing hidden worlds of the past, present and future in Secrets of Underground London.

The Secret Station - Aldwych
My Final Year University Project - A Trip Down Aldwych. The London Underground has undergone many changes since its conception; lines and stations close to be replaced by newer, more efficient ones. But what actually becomes of these closed down stations? Do any still exist now? If so, what would it be like to visit one...? This video takes you on a visual journey through Aldwych, a disused station on a now defunct branch of the Piccadilly Line. I produced this as part of my 'TV Production' course at Bournemouth University. It was awarded a first. Inside The Abandoned Part Of London's Charing Cross Underground Station
Business Insider was given a tour of the abandoned part of London's Charing Cross Underground station. The station - which provides the Northen and Bakerloo line - once served the Jubilee line, but the platform was closed in 1999 after an extension was built that completely bypassed the station. The platforms are now used for various forms of training by different organisations - including the fire brigade and the police - and public tours from the museum. Hollywood movies are also filmed in the station, providing scenes for the Bourne Ultimatum and Skyfall. We were also given access to the station's service tunnel and ventilation shaft. Secrets Of The Glasgow Subway
Another episode of 'Secrets...' this time, we went up to Scotland, to ride on the brilliant Glasgow Subway system with its fifteen stops to see what things we could spot that you might not have known about or missed. And having done all this, it should all change in the next couple of years in 2020, when brand new driverless trains come onto the system, and the whole subway is upgraded again! Read about that here: http://www.spt.co.uk/subway/modernisation/ Note: This video not paid for or sponsored by SPT, but they did kindly give me filming permission - many thanks! Thanks also to Kirsty, for her excellent local local knowledge without which it wouldn't have been possible.

Evolution of the Underground
This is an animated timeline showing how the Underground started in 1863, and then grew over the years to present day. Note that it's showing you when the lines were first created and the Circle Line and Hammersmith & City Line were originally part of the Metropolitan, and District Railways. The Northern Line extension is currently being constructed from Kennigton - Nine Elms - Battersea, and should be the next new part of the Undergroung on the tube map in 2020. NOTES: This animation obviously shows just the London Underground and not the DLR, Overground or future Crossrail services. The stations in the Hounslow area are really tricky to show (Hounslow Town opened in 1883, closed in 1886, then had a period when it was open again between 1903 and 1909). The Northern City Line was not originally part of the Northern Line but is shown here in black, as it did later become part of the Northern Line, and appeared on carriage maps of Northern Line trains. The Waterloo & City line may have opened in 1898, and not 1899!

Geoff goes out onto the network, this time pointing out old lines, bad grammar, stations that could have been, and -- of course -- how there are always signs that show the wrong number of steps ... There's more about the South Harrow gasworks here: http://southharrowthenandnow.co.uk/making-gas.htm Geoff doesn't really have tube map tiles in his bathroom, but oh my - here's someone that does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VMJDLoDCT4 Well done for opening up the description and reading this bit! Not everyone does. There's no game to play this time, or a particular thing to type, but do feel free to leave us a comment if you have enjoyed! Note that will also be no Secrets of the Crossrail until at least 2018 (that's when it opens, and therefore is impossible to do until then), and we have no plans to do Secrets of the Buses either. Northern City Line or Thameslink still remain a possibility though! Thanks to those that have translated the video captions into the following languages: .

The London Underground History - Geographic History
The London Underground History - Geographic History. The idea of an underground railway linking the City of London with some of the railway termini in its urban centre was proposed in the 1830s, and the Metropolitan Railway was granted permission to build such a line in 1854. The world's first underground railway, it opened in January 1863 between Paddington and Farringdon using gas-lit wooden carriages hauled by steam locomotives. It was hailed as a success, carrying 38,000 passengers on the opening day, and borrowing trains from other railways to supplement the service. The Metropolitan District Railway (commonly known as the District Railway) opened in December 1868 from South Kensington to Westminster as part of a plan for an underground 'inner circle' connecting London's main-line termini. The Metropolitan and District railways completed the Circle line in 1884,[16] built using the cut and cover method. Both railways expanded, the District building five branches to the west reaching Ealing, Hounslow, Uxbridge, Richmond and Wimbledon and the Metropolitan eventually extended as far as Verney Junction in Buckinghamshire, more than 50 miles (80 km) from Baker Street and the centre of London. Bunkers are mostly underground, compared to blockhouses which are mostly above ground. They were used extensively in World War I, World War II, and the Cold War for weapons facilities, command and control centers, and storage facilities (for example, in the event of nuclear war). Bunkers can also be used as protection from tornadoes. Trench bunkers are small concrete structures, partly dug into the ground. Many artillery installations, especially for coastal artillery, have historically been protected by extensive bunker systems. Typical industrial bunkers include mining sites, food storage areas, dumps for materials, data storage, and sometimes living quarters. When a house is purpose-built with a bunker, the normal location is a reinforced below-ground bathroom with fibre-reinforced plastic shells. Bunkers deflect the blast wave from nearby explosions to prevent ear and internal injuries to people sheltering in the bunker. Nuclear bunkers must also cope with the underpressure that lasts for several seconds after the shock wave passes, and block radiation. A bunker's door must be at least as strong as the walls. In bunkers inhabited for prolonged periods, large amounts of ventilation or air conditioning must be provided. Bunkers can be destroyed with powerful explosives and bunker-busting warheads.

Inside Aldwych, London's abandoned Underground station
Business Insider was given a tour of London's abandoned Aldwych Underground station. The station has quite the history, opening in 1907 and serving as a bomb shelter during the Blitz in the 1940s. It was also used as a hiding place for some of the British Museum's treasures including the Elgin Marbles. The station used to provide services to the Picadilly line, having only one stop to Holborn, which is around a 10-minute walk away. The station was eventually closed in 1994, due to heavy maintenance costs. The station is now used for various forms of training by different organisations - including the fire brigade and the police - and public tours from the museum. Hollywood movies are also filmed in the station, previously providing scenes for "V for Vendetta" and "Atonement." -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI UK on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1Nz3jG3 Follow BI UK on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1VWDkiy Follow BI UK on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2gsLEds Read more on BI UK: uk.businessinsider.com -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider UK is the largest business news site for British readers and viewers in the UK. Paddock secret underground Bunker Part 1
Paddock is the codeword for an alternative Cabinet War Room bunker for Winston Churchill's World War II government located in Dollis Hill, North West London under the Post Office Research Station. It was constructed in 1939 but only rarely used during the war, with only two meetings of the War Cabinet being held there. It was abandoned in 1944. Paddock has had various, intermittent uses since (including a brief period where what is thought to be the map room was used as a Post Office social club) but otherwise as of 2007, the site remains largely disused as it was when it was decommissioned at the end of World War II. Paddock was built at the start of the 2nd World War below the Post Office Research Station in Dollis Hill. The purpose of the two level citadel was to act as a standby to the Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall. The bunker became operational in 1940 with the War Cabinet meeting there on 3rd October. Churchill did not like the new bunker and by the autumn of 1943 the standby cabinet war rooms were relocated to the North Rotunda in Marsham Street, close to Whitehall; Paddock was abandoned the following year. During the cold war, Paddock was suggested as a replacement for the North London Group War Room at Partingdale Lane, Mill Hill but this was rejected by the GLC. It was also, along with Station Z at Harrow, suggested as the Main Control Centre for the whole of London with the 4 (later 5) Group Controls reporting to it. The idea of 1 central control was never adopted and the upper floor at Paddock was relegated to a Post Office social club. Following closure of Post Office Research Station, in the mid 1990's the site was sold to a property developer who converted the Research Station into luxury flats with a new housing estate on the rest of the site. The single storey surface building above Paddock was demolished but the citadel, which has local authority listing was untouched and two access points were retained one an unobtrusive steel door in a wall between two houses and the other a brick blockhouse beside the road which also houses a small electricity sub station. The site has now been handed over to a housing association. Behind the southern entrance door door is a narrow spiral staircase that descends thirty feet to the upper level of the two level citadel. Signs on the wall indicate this is Floor 27 (the lower level being Floor 28) which seems strange as there were certainly never 26 floors above it. At the bottom of the stairway is some ventilation plant with the air intake trunking and some electrical switchgear.

The signs on the London tube network are designed to move people along & to avoid overcrowding, not neccesarily to speed up your journey. When changing from the Jubilee line to the Piccadilly line at Green Park station don't follow the signs, it is quicker to follow the signs to the exit and then go back down. At Victoria station at peak rush hour times if there is a queue to get onto the Victoria Line follow the signs to the District line & then head to the Victoria line from there. At Kings Cross St Pancres underground station always follow the signs to the Hammersmith & City line which will lead you to the old ticket hall by the Euston Road exit. All the tube lines are there: Victoria, Northern, Piccadilly, Metropolitan, Circle & Hammersmith & City. It is often quicker to walk between stations rather than get the London underground. It is quicker to walk between Charing Cross station & Embankment station, Bank station & Cannon Street station, Mansion House station & St Pauls station, Lancaster Gate station & Paddington station, Warren Street station & Euston Square station. Check out the link to TFL's geographical tube map below. TFL have a map showing you where all the toilets are on the London underground, it also tells you if the bathrooms are inside or outside of the ticket barriers. It is good to know where the exits are on a tube platform. Two apps that give you this information so you sit in the right carriage on the tube are tube exits for iPhone & tube assistant for android. The links to both apps are below. Having to get from North London to South London can sometimes take a long time. Our advice is to try & use the Victoria line or Thameslink line. They are the quickest ways of getting from north to south. ********************************** Geographical Tube Map http://www.london-tubemap.com/ Toilet Map https://www.tfl.gov.uk/cdn/static/cms/documents/toilets-map.pdf Station Master 3D Maps http://www.stationmasterapp.com/ Tube Exits for iPhone http://www.tubeexits.co.uk/ Tube Assistant for Android http://www.tubeassistant.co.uk/ Thameslink Route http://www.thameslinkrailway.com/your-journey/planning/map/ *************************************************************** city hacks London is a YouTube channel for Londoners and London's tourist visitors offering top tips & life hacks for battling the city. Down Street: Inside the abandoned London Underground station that could soon reopen to the public
Deep under London, something is stirring. The eerie network of tunnels that once formed Down Street station, a former stop on the Piccadilly line between Green Park and Hyde Park Corner, once teemed with people. Closed since 1932, it was last used as a secret underground bunker by Winston Churchill during the Second World War. But now, more than 80 year later, it could soon welcome members of the public once again. For more videos, head over to http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/tv
