Art 212, Scythians and Styles

02:34
This video shows images of Scythian grave goods from the Ukraine drawn from the exhibition catalogue "Scythian Gold, Treasures from Ancient Ukraine," edited by Ellen D. Reeder, published by Harry N. Abrams in 2000. The earliest pieces shown date from the 7th. c. BC and exemplify the "animal style." Later pieces show the influence of Near Eastern and Greek styles. Lions sphinxes, griffons, and boars join the leopards, deer and birds of Scythian origin. The forms become more naturalistic, less entwined and serpentine. Depictions of humans change, with action scenes and goddesses appearing. Greek themes begin to nudge out native ones, and while the depictions become more elaborate and sometimes even narrative , that is to say, "historic" rather than timelessly symbolic as in a shamanic world. They lose their earlier vigor and simplicity - compare the "Gumby-"like bronze scepter from the 7th c. BC to the detailed, representational gold reliefs on the 4th c. BC gold-plated helmet, shown later in the slides. Near the end of the slide show see a rectangle acanthus leaf gold plaque decoration that was originally attached to the hand grip of a bow. It dates about 325 BC. The Greco-Egyptian lotus and acanthus patterns are joined by a border of Greek ovolos, but the whole design retains a whiff of the dynanism and assymetry of the Scythian hand. In viewing these images, I'd like you to ask yourselves, "is there a 'price to pay' for world domination of Hellenistic style?"

Russia: Tattooed 2,500-yo mummy PRINCESS goes on show to public

02:01
The remains of the famed 2500-year-old Altai mummy, nicknamed 'Princess of Ukok', were presented to the general public for first time at Anokhin Museum in Gorno-Altaisk on Wednesday. Officials from the museum are delighted as according to Rimma Erkinova, "this discovery was one of the most sensational archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century." The Princess was originally found in 1993 on the Ukok plateau on the border with Mongolia and China and is almost unusually well-preserved due to the permafrost. SOT, Rimma Erkinova, employee at Anokhin Museum (Russian): "The mummy of a woman was found on the Ukok plateau on the border with Mongolia and China in 1993." SOT, Rimma Erkinova, employee at Anokhin Museum (Russian): "You know, this discovery was one of the most sensational archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century. There are only very few mummies in the world that are as well preserved as Princess of Ukok." SOT, Rimma Erkinova, employee at Anokhin Museum (Russian): "Regarding the tattoo, they always say that it is made in the so-called animal style. Fighting animals. The Scythians are warriors. Their life is a constant struggle. They struggled for life, for food." Penetration Test: Stone vs Steel Arrowheads on a Deer

06:29
http://primitivepathways.com. In this video Billy Berger tests the penetration of stone and steel arrowheads on a freshly killed deer to determine which is more effective. I use my wooden hunting bow pulling 50 lbs at 30 inches of draw, at a distance of 10 yards. Can stone arrowheads, used for at least 10,000 years, hold their own against modern steel arrowheads? The Warrior Women of Asgarda

13:18
Katerina Tarnovska is a Ukrainian preschool teacher, a kickboxing world champion and a self-proclaimed descendent of the legendary warrior women of the Amazon. In 2002 she founded Asgarda, a martial art exclusively for women that is inspired by the tribal traditions of the Scythian Amazons. In the past decade, more than 1,000 ladies have been entrusted with the teachings of the Asgarda, which Katerina says is the only fighting style specifically tailored to the female form. Shooting the Ottoman Turkish-Style PVC Bow

The Ottoman Turkish-style horsebow I made in the build-along a few weeks ago hasn't really been shot yet, so I thought I'd go out and take some footage while I did so - the wind was terrible, but the bow shoots nicely - at least, nicer than I'm able to shoot :-P I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor)

Mongolian Horn Bow Compared to a Faux Horn Effect PVC Bow

02:49
Just wanted to show an example of a true horn bow from Mongolia to go with our faux horn belly effect on the flattened PVC bow. This Mongolian bow is about 5 feet long with 8 inch siyahs and horn string bridges (one side is missing and I am replacing it). The bow is horn and sinew with what looks like a birch wood core, the siyahs look like birch and are spliced into the ends of the limbs. The main limbs are covered in birch bark and the whole thing is painted. This bow is light but fluctuates in weight depending on the humidity and time of day (I believe it's the sinew doing this), going anywhere from 25-35 pounds. Although it is more of the cheaper tourist-type, this bow probably would have drawn 40 pounds or so in Mongolia, which has much less humidity than tropical Hawaii. You can see that horn varies in its colors and patterns. Different bows have different patterns and horn will always be variable, so if you are making a faux horn finish, keep in mind that the possibilities are endless. I've seen horn range from black to a light blond, highly striped or almost one smooth face. And just to clarify, I am only calling this bow a horn bow because it is composed of horn. It is a modern bow but is a true Asiatic composite with wood, horn and sinew all glued together with animal-based glue (I've heard the more tourist bows could be hide, sinew or sometimes fish air bladder). I do not refer to any of my PVC bows as horn bows, the closest I'll get is saying faux horn or horn bow replica or somethign along those lines. That said, thanks for watching and enjoy!

The "classical Scythians" known to ancient Greek historians, agreed to be mainly Iranian in origin, were located in the northern Black Sea and fore-Caucasus region. Other Scythian groups documented by Assyrian, Achaemenid and Chinese sources show that they also existed in Central Asia, where they were referred to as the Iskuzai/Askuzai, Saka (Old Persian: Sakā; New Persian/Pashto: ساکا‎; Sanskrit: शक Śaka; Greek: Σάκαι; Latin: Sacae), and Sai (Chinese: 塞; Old Chinese: *sˤək), respectively. The relationships between the peoples living in these widely separated regions remains unclear, and the term is used in both a broad and narrow sense. The term "Scythian" is used by modern scholars in an archaeological context for finds perceived to display attributes of the wider "Scytho-Siberian" culture, usually without implying an ethnic or linguistic connotation. The term Scythic may also be used in a similar way, "to describe a special phase that followed the widespread diffusion of mounted nomadism, characterized by the presence of special weapons, horse gear, and animal art in the form of metal plaques". Their westernmost territories during the Iron Age were known to classical Greek sources as Scythia, and in the more narrow sense "Scythian" is restricted to these areas, where the Scythian languages were spoken. Different definitions of "Scythian" have been used, leading to a good deal of confusion. The Scythians were among the earliest peoples to master mounted warfare. They kept herds of horses, cattle and sheep, lived in tent-covered wagons and fought with bows and arrows on horseback. They developed a rich culture characterised by opulent tombs, fine metalwork and a brilliant art style. In the 8th century BC, they possibly raided Zhou China. Soon after, they expanded westwards and dislodged the Cimmerians from power on the Pontic Steppe. At their peak, Scythians came to dominate the entire steppe zone, stretching from the Carpathian Mountains in the west to central China (Ordos culture) and the south Siberia (Tagar culture) in the east, creating what has been called the first Central Asian nomadic empire, although there was little that could be called an organised state.Based in what is modern-day Ukraine, Southern European Russia and Crimea, the western Scythians were ruled by a wealthy class known as the Royal Scyths. The Scythians established and controlled the Silk Road, a vast trade network connecting Greece, Persia, India and China, perhaps contributing to the contemporary flourishing of those civilisations. Settled metalworkers made portable decorative objects for the Scythians. These objects survive mainly in metal, forming a distinctive Scythian art. In the 7th century BC, the Scythians crossed the Caucasus and frequently raided the Middle East along with the Cimmerians, playing an important role in the political developments of the region. Around 650–630 BC, Scythians briefly dominated the Medes of the western Iranian Plateau, stretching their power to the borders of Egypt. After losing control over Media, the Scythians continued intervening in Middle Eastern affairs, playing a leading role in the destruction of the Assyrian Empire in the Sack of Nineveh in 612 BC. The Scythians subsequently engaged in frequent conflicts with the Achaemenid Empire. The western Scythians suffered a major defeat against Macedonia in the 4th century BC and were subsequently gradually conquered by the Sarmatians, a related Iranian people from Central Asia. Ziviyeh Castle Kurdistan, Iran 9.4.2013

ZIVIYEH CASTLE  We visited the Ziviyeh Castle on 9.4.2013. It is located some 55 km of south east of Iranian city Saghez (Saqiz), near the village of the same name on the top of a hill. Historians believe that the remains of this castle belong to Manaian age of 8th century BC.  The Ziviyeh Hoard (or Treasure) is a treasure hoard containing gold, silver, and ivory objects, also including a few Luristan pieces, that was accidently uncovered in Ziwiyeh village in 1947. These objects provide a link between the cultures of the Iranian plateau and the Scythian art forms known as the "animal style". -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Farhat Abbas Shah, Dubai Mushaera 1996" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEkvQ583sQo -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Most CRAZY Things Ancient Greeks Did!

11:39
Check out the most crazy things ancient greeks did! This top 10 list of crazy facts about ancient greece and their culture is absolutely amazing! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "Ancient Objects And HOW They Were Used!" video here: https://youtu.be/0de2nV8OHJk Watch our "Most MYSTERIOUS Ocean Facts!" video here: https://youtu.be/BzrlpgRVPQg Watch our "Most STRANGE Things Found On The Beach!" video here: https://youtu.be/cQjpze_4z5U 10. Milo of Croton The Ancient Greeks invented progressive strength training. Milo of Croton won six Olympiads in the wrestling events. He also won multiple times at the Pythian Games, Isthmian Games, and Nemean Games. Milo loved to show off his strength and dexterity. According to sources, his favorite trick was to hold a pomegranate and have people try to take it from him. No one was strong enough to take the pomegranate from him and he also managed to not damage the fruit. How did he gain such prodigious strength and skill? According to popular legend, Milo noticed a newborn calf near his home. He decided to lift the animal and carry it on his shoulders. He returned the next day and did it again. He did it every day until the calf grew to a four-year-old bull. Thus was progressive strength training born. Here’s another wild athlete story. Theagenes of Thasos was a formidable fighter who won over 1,300 bouts over his two decade career. He even won a crown for long-distance running in the city of Argos. As a boxer, he was never defeated. According to legend, years after his, a vandal tried to deface a statue honoring Theagenes. The bronze statue broke in half and crushed the would-be criminal. 9. Birth Control by Sneezing The Ancient Greeks had various forms of birth control. Some forms involved certain herbs and plants, which worked very well. However, one physician, Soranus, advised women to do something a little odd. After intercourse, women were told to squat and sneeze to avoid becoming pregnant. He also suggested jumping up and down to dislodge the sperm. If that’s not crazy enough for you, the website Snopes.com was still debunking the “jump up and down” method of birth control as recently as 2007. 8. Brazen Bull In the 6th century BC, a brass worker named Perilaus of Athens created a large, hollow bull made of brass and gave it to a ruler named Phalaris. A door on the side of the bull allowed a man to climb into the sculpture. Once the door was closed, a fire could be lit from underneath and slowly roast the person. But it doesn’t end there. In the head of the bull was a series of stops and pipes that transformed the screams of the person into “the tenderest, most pathetic, most melodious of bellowings”. Phalaris was far from impressed. So disgusted by the piece, he asked Perilaus to climb into the bull and demonstrate the capabilities of the pipes. Once inside, Phalaris shut the door and ordered a fire lit beneath the bull. He reportedly said, “Receive the due reward of your wondrous art; let the music-maker be the first to play.” Before Perilaus, they removed him from the bull and threw him off a cliff. Despite Phalaris’s disgust, the brazen bull became the most common form of in Ancient Greece. Here’s an extra fact. Phalaris was a tyrant ruling in Acragas in Sicily from 570 BC to 554. He’s known for several building projects but he did have a cruel streak that made him the proverbial “evil tyrant”. According to legend, after he was overthrown by a general, the new ruler ordered Phalaris to roast inside the brazen bull. 7. Victorious Corpse Did you know? Cheating was a huge problem in Ancient Greek sport, just like today. Most of the time, it was the usual bribery or foul moves during games. Here is a picture of a scene on a kylix depicting two pankratists fighting. One of them is trying to gouge out the eye of his opponent while simultaneously biting. The umpire is preparing to strike the fighter for the foul. Some fighters would find an easier way and try to curse or hex their opponents using “curse tablets” to make them lose. An event held during the Olympic Games was the pankration, which was a mixed martial arts style that blended boxing and wrestling. Most famous of the pankratists was Arrhachion. During the 54th Olympiad in 564 BC, Arrhachion entered the pankration to defend his championship. However, his opponent got the better of him and put Arrachion into a chokehold. It is said Arrhachion’s trainer shouted, “What a fine funeral if you do not submit at Olympia”. Arrhachion responded by twisting and kicking his opponent’s foot and dislocating it. The pain forced his opponent to surrender. Unfortunately, the move broke Arrhachion’s neck. Despite that, the judges named Arrhachion the victor. he successfully defended his title. His fame spread as people held him up as the athletic ideal. Geographer Pausanias mentioned a statue immortalizing Arrhachion during his description of Phigalia

Gold treasure of Kurgan 4 at Filippovka burial ground, Russia

00:41
"From 2004 to 2007, nine burial mounds were excavated at the Filippovka burial ground, located in the Orenburg region of Russia. The most significant burial is a huge royal kurgan (Kurgan 4) that was largely undisturbed. Excavation of this kurgan yielded burial goods of precious metals, examples of sophisticated Animal Style art, and important new information on burial ritual. A depiction of an Achaemenid king on an object found in Kurgan 15 suggests a burial date in the second half of the fifth century B.C.E.; other finds, however, suggest a fourth-century B.C.E. date. Vladimir Pingachёv (Владимир Пингачёв) - World of Native Gods and European Origins

02:01
http://ateney.ru/old/art/art004.htm Professional artist and teacher Vladimir Pingachёv (Moscow) - an experienced master of easel painting (oil on canvas). It is the Nordic School of Art Nouveau. This is evident in the pagan subjects of paintings in their refined aesthetics, multicolor mosaic and general melancholy spirit. For example, the pattern "Igdrassil" (Scandinavian version of the World Tree) by its texture resembles an ancient tapestry fabric and color range - cold autumn. This coldness becomes a tragic mystery Nordic gods - Odin and Freya, who died after the European baptism. Gloomy and severe forms one as a military armor with gaping blackness instead of eyes. The tragic end of the world proclaim symbolic paintings "Ragnarok" and "Naglfar", written by a master of the northern mythology subjects. The image of the Goddess of the Scythian combines the ancient traditions of the Aryans and Slavs. Face of the Divine Virgin, depicted in a pose Oranta with raised hands to the sky, solemnly beautiful, austere and spirituality. Archaeological ornament Tripoli culture, animal style steppe nomads, the magic of the swastika, totem bird, gold diadem with the image of the Tree of Paradise, finally cosmogonic symbols of day and night - all these elements reflect the blossoming complexity of the universe, its sublime beauty. At the initiative of the author of these lines was created a portrait of the goddess of wisdom and fair war, Pallas Athena. She ordered for the cover of the first issue of Russian international magazine "Athenaeum". studied mythological texts, special studies, reviewed many of the original image of the Goddess (recently generalized in my booklet "Athena and Aten") and Vladimir Pingach?vym - - made the preliminary sketches and sketches of me: a large preliminary work has been done. In the final version depicts the myth of the birth of the Goddess. Here Athena emerged from Zeus's head, and clothed in golden armor, beautiful and regal in his greatness. Surrounded by archaic totems, night owl, and snake p?strovidnoy evoke horror-Gorgon Medusa, Athena svetlookaya maiden calls to the holy warriors battle and carries them to a glorious victory - Nike. The powerful energy of the Goddess reinforce signs, amulets - tr?hluchevye swastika in the night sky, and in the frame, as well as the leaves and fruit of the oak, symbols of the divine world of eternity. Vladimir Pingachёv deeply studied the history of Europe and created a series of paintings that transmit the spirit of the early and mature Middle Ages ( "The Normans", "Good King Dagobert", "Eleventh Century", "The Castle of the tenth century", "The capture of the King"). Subtlety and psychologically impressively shows the world of the Celts and Britons ( "Celtic Chronicles", "Lancelot," "Guinevere"). It was influenced by Nordic Muse Tatiana Vinogradova, whose book of poems "Stone Tree" inspired the artist has illustrated: Guinevere ... her hair - like moonlight eyes - dark forest lakes. The voice - gentle sound of the harp ... Her smile - my reward For all the works and deeds ... A special place in the works Pingach?va takes the theme of Ancient Rus ( "making fire", "Werewolf. Vsevolod Polotsk", "Prince Igor" and others). In the film "Invasion of the Rus' depicted the clash of two civilizations - the pagan north and Christian south, Russia and Byzantium. Portrait of Prophetic Oleg, is going to "take revenge on unreasonable Khazars" (image of a red serpent), despite the brilliance of Byzantine, it looks in Russian noble and light. Here the struggle, thoughtfulness, a clear geopolitical perspective. "The first hike Svyatoslav" - so the new historical picture, which depicts the time of initiation, that is, dedication of the young prince to the soldiers. Svyatoslav boy throws a spear, and from that moment begins a battle of Kiev with drevlyans squads. The canvas is written realistically with elements of impressionism, but it also carries a profound symbolic meaning. These and other pictures of Vladimir Pingachёva together form the world of Native Gods and European origins, which makes them valuable, not only for our fellow citizens, but for the whole of the White World.

The Scythians established and controlled the Silk Road, a vast trade network connecting Greece, Persia, India and China, perhaps contributing to the contemporary flourishing of those civilisations. karakol town

35:20
Karakol is one of Kyrgyzstan's major tourist destinations, serving as a good starting point for the excellent hiking, trekking, skiing and mountaineering in the high central Tian Shan to the south and east. The town itself boasts a number of places that would be of interest to tourists, such as a very pretty wooden mosque built by Chinese artisans for the local Dungans between 1907 and 1910 entirely without metal nails and a similarly appealing wooden Russian Orthodox church, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, completed in 1895, used as an officer's club during Soviet times, but now restored and in use again. The Regional Museum, following some sponsorship from the nearby Canadian gold mining concern, has exhibits on the Issyk Kul Lake petroglyphs, Scythian bronze artifacts, and a short history of the geology and mineral exploitation in the region. There also is a small section of Russian colonial "gingerbread" style residential buildings. The Sunday livestock market is a good place to see remnants of the traditional nomadic rural life. Przhevalsky's grave, a memorial park and a small museum dedicated to his and other Russian explorations in Central Asia are some 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of Karakol at Pristan Przhevalsky, overlooking the Mikhailovka inlet of Issyk Kul Lake where the former Soviet torpedo testing facilities were located. Facilities themselves are still a closed, military area. Karakol is famous among skiers and snowboarders from former USSR for its ski resort. Situated just 20 minutes from the town, the Karakol Ski Base provides services significantly better[citation needed] than those available at Shymbulak, a resort outside Almaty, and has cheaper prices. Unlike Shymbulak resort, the riding at Karakol includes forest areas as well as cleared trails.
