Confessions of a Trade Magazine Publisher

Industrial companies love their trade magazines; there’s no secret about that. So what are some ways to approach an editor or publisher to pitch content and make the entire process easier for them? 1. SEND IN YOUR MATERIALS EARLY CEO and Publisher of http://www.heliweb.com/ Ryan Mason generally works with his manufacturers and OEMs so that they know to schedule their press releases in advance. When it comes to some trade shows, Heliweb (and trade magazines in general) can get slammed with as many as 60 press releases per day. And if that goes on for four days straight, that’s a ton of competition…not to mention a ton of materials in general that the editors have to process. However, if you turn in your press release nice and early, notify them not to release the news until the day of the trade show opening…well, that’s perfect, because that’s the day that the next edition of the magazine is being released. Ryan knows that release dates are important; and his magazine often gets trusted with embargo press releases because they’re so careful to publish them at the proper time. 2. TELL A STORY Of course, even after you send in your article, competition may still be a problem for it. (60 releases per day for four days, remember?) So the easier it is for the editors to copy and paste your manuscript for publishing without major changes, the faster your article will go out. But the content of the article still matters, too. When there’s fierce competition, Ryan and his team tend to select the articles that they know their customers will want to read: stories. A lot of other publishers might copy and paste a generic press release in order to publish it before anybody else, so they can say, “We posted it first!” However, after they’ve done that and earned a customer’s click, the customer will bounce off the page extremely quickly after they realize it’s a verbatim press release. On the other end of that spectrum, Heliweb and other substantial magazines attract audiences with stories that aren’t generic. Their titles are engaging and the articles are worth reading, so readers are retained for longer. “We’re not out there to make it first. We’re never first; we’re always right.” Write an actual story about what you’re doing or what your new product is; why it’s so great; and how it improves on anything else in the industry. 3. RESPECT FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS If you send in publications that too short, publishers will avoid your story. Why? Google will actually penalize news sites for posting any article that doesn’t meet a 300-word minimum requirement. But even if you know about that requirement, that doesn’t give you an excuse to write a release something along the lines of, “Hi! We’re a vendor and we’re at this trade show! Here are three more paragraphs about what our company does so that we can meet Googles standards!” In a niche industry, chances are your readers already know who you are and what you do. If you’re competing for attention at a trade show, you need more than that. Make the content meaningful and informative. Give it an engaging title; give it a subtitle; include major keywords; include keywords in the title, subtitle, and first paragraph as well. And above all, make it engaging! 4. BUILD A RELATIONSHIP Connect with your publishers enough to at least know their team size. Shoot them a phone call; know their email address so that you can send in materials early and respect their schedule. And if you really want to wow them, “Ask your publisher, ‘What is your output image size?’ ” Simple as it sounds, that is a huge gesture! Sending in a properly-sized image will cut down on the work they have to do before releasing your article, and it shows that you’re serious about working with them. Sending in a tiny .jpeg is a surefire way to get your article pushed to the back of the queue. Send them an image of the correct size, exported for the web so that it’s not pixelated. Efforts like that can be vital to publishers because, as Ryan says, when there are 60 releases coming in at once and many don’t have images or proper content, they just get pushed to the back. JUST MAKE AN EFFORT Every publisher is a little different in their requirements, but they all have a lot of common preferences. Use high-resolution images that are landscape rather than portrait. Use proper grammar and punctuation. Make sure there is only one Facebook page or other account under your name, because otherwise it’s very difficult to get tagged properly in social media promotions. TIME Magazine’s publisher has been snapped up by the US media company Meredith Corp for £2.1 billion.The deal to buy Time Inc, which also owns People, Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazines, was backed by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch.It will add news, business and sports brands to Iowa-based Meredith, a broadcaster that already owns lifestyle magazines.Analysts said it could pave the way for its broadcasting arm to be spun off into a standalone company.When combined, the Meredith and Time brands will have a readership of 135 million and paid circulation of nearly 60 million.The Koch brothers are two of the world’s richest men through their ownership of Koch Industries, a sprawling industrial empire that manufactures products such as Brawny paper towels, Dixie Cups and Lycra. They will not have a seat on Meredith’s board and will have no influence over editorial or managerial operations. It was established as a small-format magazine called The Queen in 1873. In 1897 it was renamed McCall's Magazine—The Queen of Fashion (later shortened to McCall's) and subsequently grew in size to become a large-format glossy. It was one of the "Seven Sisters" group of women's service magazines. McCall's published fiction by such well-known authors as Alice Adams, Ray Bradbury, Gelett Burgess, Willa Cather, Jack Finney, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Barbara Garson, John Steinbeck, Tim O'Brien, Anne Tyler and Kurt Vonnegut... Features From June 1949 until her death in November 1962, Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a McCall's column, "If You Ask Me". The former First Lady gave brief answers to questions sent in to the magazine. Starting in May 1951, and lasting until at least 1995, Betsy McCall paper dolls were printed in most issues. Children could cut out the printed dolls and clothing, or for a small fee (10¢ in 1957, 25¢ in 1967) paper dolls printed on cardboard could be ordered. Betsy McCall became so popular that various sized vinyl dolls were produced by Ideal and American Character Dolls. Another popular feature which ran for many years was the cartoon panel "It's All in the Family" by Stan and Jan Berenstain. Film critic Pauline Kael worked at McCall's from 1965 to 1966, and was reportedly fired after writing a highly unfavorable review of The Sound of Music. Sewing Patterns and The Queen of Fashion In 1870, Scottish immigrant James McCall began designing and printing his own line of sewing patterns. As a means of advertising his patterns, McCall founded a four-page fashion journal entitled The Queen: Illustrating McCall's Bazaar Glove-Fitting Patterns. When McCall died in 1884, his widow became president of McCall Company... The Queen began to publish homemaking and handiwork information, and by 1890 had expanded to 12 pages. In 1891, the magazine's name became The Queen of Fashion, and the cost for a year's subscription was 30 cents. In 1893, James Henry Ottley took over the McCall Company. He increased the subscription price to 50 cents a year, increased the number of pages to between 16 and 30 per issue, and began to publish articles on children's issues, health, beauty, and foreign travel. In order to reflect the magazine's expanded range of topics, the name was changed to McCall's Magazine—The Queen of Fashion in 1897. In time, the name would be shortened to McCall's. Despite the name changes, for many years information on McCall's Patterns filled an average of 20 percent of the magazine's pages... Robert Stein was editor from 1972 to 1986. During Stein's tenure, McCalls gained the slogan / subtitle "The Magazine for Suburban Women." After Stein left, the quick turnover of editors returned. Change in ownership Ownership of McCall's began to change nearly as fast as editors came and went. Norton Simon sold McCall's to private owners in 1973. In 1986, McCall's Publishing Company was bought by Time Inc. and Lang Communications. In 1989, McCall's was sold to The New York Times Company, and in 1994, German-based Gruner + Jahr announced plans to purchase their magazine business. Time summarized and interpreted the week's news; Life was a picture magazine of politics, culture, and society that dominated American visual perceptions in the era before television; Fortune explored in depth the economy and the world of business, introducing to executives avant-garde ideas such as Keynesianism; and Sports Illustrated explored the motivations and strategies of sports teams and key players. Counting his radio projects and newsreels, Luce created the first multimedia corporation. He was born in China to missionary parents. He envisaged that the United States would achieve world hegemony, and, in 1941, he declared the 20th century would be the "American Century". Nightly discussions of the concept of a news magazine led Luce and Hadden, both age 23, to quit their jobs in 1922. Later that same year, they formed Time Inc. Having raised $86,000 of a $100,000 goal, they published the first issue of Time on March 3, 1923. Luce served as business manager while Hadden was editor-in-chief. Luce and Hadden annually alternated year-to-year the titles of president and secretary-treasurer. In 1925, Luce decided to move headquarters to Cleveland, while Hadden was on a trip to Europe. Cleveland was cheaper, and Luce’s first wife, Lila, wanted out of New York. When Hadden returned, he was horrified and moved Time back to New York. Upon Hadden's sudden death in 1929, Luce assumed Hadden's position. Luce launched the business magazine Fortune in February 1930 and acquired Life in order to relaunch it as a weekly magazine of photojournalism in November 1936; he went on to launch House & Home in 1952 and Sports Illustrated in 1954. He also produced The March of Time weekly newsreel. By the mid 1960s, Time Inc. was the largest and most prestigious magazine publisher in the world. (Dwight Macdonald, a Fortune staffer during the 1930s, referred to him as "Il Luce", a play on the Italian Dictator Mussolini, who was called "Il Duce").) President Franklin D. Roosevelt, aware that most publishers were opposed to him, issued a decree in 1943 that blocked all publishers and media executives from visits to combat areas; he put General George Marshall in charge of enforcement. The main target was Luce, who had long opposed FDR. Historian Alan Brinkley argued the move was "badly mistaken", for had Luce been allowed to travel, he would have been an enthusiastic cheerleader for American forces around the globe. But stranded in New York City, Luce's frustration and anger expressed itself in hard-edged partisanship.[4] Luce, supported by Editor-in-Chief T. S. Matthews, appointed Whittaker Chambers as acting Foreign News editor in 1944, despite the feuds Chambers had with reporters in the field.[5] Luce, who remained editor-in-chief of all his publications until 1964, maintained a position as an influential member of the Republican Party.[6] An instrumental figure behind the so-called "China Lobby", he played a large role in steering American foreign policy and popular sentiment in favor of Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling in their war against the Japanese.
