Biomimicry design, explained with 99% Invisible. Check them out here: https://99percentinvisible.org/ Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Japan’s Shinkansen doesn’t look like your typical train. With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. We just have to go out and find them. Moth Eyes and Solar Panels - When scientists at North Carolina University wanted to make thin solar panels more efficient, they had an eye on moth eyes. Velcro - If you spend much time hiking outside, you've probably come home covered in burdock burrs at some point. Canes Inspired by Bats - Bats are able to navigate by echolocation, emitting ultrasonic waves. Spider Webs - Spider webs in your home might inspire you to invent a new way of running from the room screaming, but they also inspired some scientists to make a super-strong adhesive. Lobsters and LEXID - Lobsters see by focusing on a small point. Birds and Bullet Trains - If you've ridden a bullet train, you may have noticed the loud noise it makes emerging from a tunnel—but not if you rode one of the new ones inspired by birds. Sugary Vaccines - A tardigrade may sound like something in an episode of Dr. Who, but it's actually a tiny, tough, eight-legged creature that lives in water. Termites - We tend to think of termites as tiny bugs that destroy houses, but on the contrary, they've actually inspired a process of building houses to be more energy efficient. Stenocara Beetle and Water Collection - You've probably never heard of the Stenocara Beetle, but its system of collecting water from fog could help us all have more drinking water in the future. Mussels and Bacteria Make Underwater Glue - If you need glue that can work underwater, or when wet, you might want to flex your mussels—no, not those muscles, but the kind served in seafood restaurants. Galapagos Shark and Protective Coating for Hospitals - When you think about sharks and hospitals, you probably think of someone going to the hospital after being bitten by a shark. Coral and CO2 - If you worry about your carbon footprint, you'll be happy to know some organisms in nature want to help us keep CO2 out of the air. Lotus and Self Cleaning Paint - You may have thought to yourself, “I wish I lived in a self-cleaning house.” Thanks to the lotus flower, you may get a chance one day. Whale Flippers - Whales are large, unwieldy creatures, but they manage to move around in water with surprising agility despite their size. A company called Whale Power discovered this was due to their flippers, which are studded with bumps called “tubercules” along their leading edge.

How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen

13:07
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Product Design at Dublin Institute of Technology

04:42
DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Janine Benyus, "Borrowing Nature's Blueprints: Biomimicry and The Art of Well-Adapted Design"

01:30:22
Biomimicry is a design discipline that seeks sustainable solutions by emulating nature's time-tested patterns and strategies. The goal is to create products, processes, and policies--new ways of living--that are well-adapted to life on earth over the long haul. Biomimics around the world are learning to grow food like a prairie, cool buildings like a termite, harness energy like a leaf, create color like a peacock, compute like a cell, and run a business like a redwood forest. These bio-inspired designs are elegant, functional, and life sustaining. Besides helping our species earn a longer stay on the planet, biomimicry has the potential to change the way we view and value non-human nature. It encourages us to view nature not as a source of goods, but as a mentor, a source of wisdom. In this special tribute to Bill Valentine, Janine Benyus, the author of Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature, will highlight the Biomimicry Guild's exciting alliance with HOK, which has embraced biomimicry as one of the most important tools used by their designers to create built environments in partnership with nature.

The Golden Ratio...for designers.

09:43
In this video I try to explain in simple words what is the Golden Ratio, but above all, I try to show, with some samples, how common it is in nature and why it is so important to use it in industrial design and visual compositions. ▶ I am an industrial designer, a maker, an illustrator and a photographer. I like to make prototypes, unique pieces, equipment and other stuff. I make almost everithing by my hands, but I will never be a master in what I do, because I do too many different things to be really good in any of them. I hope, anyway, to be able to inspire someone else with my videos... ▶ If you like my videos please subscribe: http://bit.ly/GuidoVrolaDesign and maybe consider to SHARE them on your favorite social! ⇒ MY WEBSITE: http://www.vroladesign.it ⇒ FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/guidovroladesign ⇒ INSTAGRAM: http://www.instagram.com/guidovrola Thank you for watching!

Biomimicry for better design | Andy Middleton | TEDxBedford

15:16
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Nature has been solving complex problems and successfully changing worlds for over three billion years. Humans have been causing wars, poverty, pollution, hunger and toxic-designs of products (as well as lot of cool stuff) for a few thousand years. Andy Middleton Founder Director of the The TYF Group, and Founding Partner of The Do Lectures argues that if we intend sticking around to the end of the universe, we’ll need to start behaving more as though we’re a part of nature, rather than apart from nature. He shares ways in which designers can shift their perspective of product design, processes, networks and thriveability by taking practical examples from nature and showing how they connect to today’s real challenges. Andy Middleton is an imaginative and innovative thinker on sustainability and resource use, with an uncanny ability to connect practices, ideas and networks into projects that can deliver transformation. He is a change specialist, speaker and facilitator with 20+years worldwide experience of helping business and government identify and implement the transformative, disruptive change that is needed to secure economic and environmental resilience. His current research interests and practices include the use of crowd source collaboration for sustainability problem solving, building pathways for food security and integration of the ecosystems approach and biomimicry principles into strategy & decision-making. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Christiaan Maats, the Dutch designer, visionary and founder of OAT shoes, has overcome a mountain of obstacles to defy what many in the shoe industry said would be impossible- the design and production of a 100% bio- degradable shoe that sprouts flowers when planted back in the earth. This is the story of one man's dream to close the loop and make shoes an integral part of the connection between mankind and nature. The design of this revolutionary product took him on a global journey from sourcing to production. In his goals to help people shift the way they think about style and recycling, Christiaan has no doubt planted the seeds for revolution in product design.

Influences on Design - Culture

02:02
This is a chapter from the ClickView title, Influences on Design. The full 16 minute programme is available with closed captions and additional resources. For more information on ClickView's video library for secondary schools, please visit http://clickv.ie/w/aATi Many factors influence the design of products, systems or environments. Designers must consider how these factors will have an impact on their eventual users, environments and the wider world. Designers have to use materials sympathetically and consider the conflicting demands that moral, cultural, economic, and social values and needs can have in the planning and in the designing of products. In six independent chapters, this programme explores the influences that culture, subculture, egalitarianism, global society, hedonism, and sustainability have on design. Packed with engaging imagery and real-life examples, this program will stimulate viewers to think about the influences on their design work.

CATIA V6 | Industrial Design | CATIA Natural Sketch for 3D Sketching Experience

02:24
More information at: http://www.3ds.com/products-services/catia/capabilities/design/ Discover CATIA on LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/catia/ From consumer products to transportation, the creative design process always starts with a sketch. Industrial designers across industries first draw their ideas on paper and then, as the project evolves, move to 3D to explore the design volumes and proportions. CATIA V6 introduces CATIA Natural Sketch, a breakthrough 3D sketching experience that finally brings together the intuitiveness of creative 2D painting gesture and the power of accurate, realistic 3D modeling. This first-of-its-kind lifelike creative experience helps designers to free up their creativity and share their ideas more rapidly and precisely. It also allows them to quickly transform their 2D ideas into a 3D reality; as well as explore design details and alternatives by sketching directly on existing 3D models. Sketching in 3D allows designers to better understand their design in volume, avoid misinterpretations of 2D views, and better communicate their ideas. It also gives designers and design studio teams the ability to use 3D sketches curves to create the 3D model with surface modeling or subdivision surface modeling tools. CATIA Natural Sketch complements the CATIA for Creative Designers solution to address the complete industrial design workflow with a unified environment, from ideation and concept to refinement and design validation, from the first sketch to the final production-ready 3D product. By making sketching in 3D truly as intuitive as sketching on paper, CATIA Natural Sketch brings a revolutionary lifelike creative experience that matches designers' needs. CATIA V6 removes emotional barriers towards 3D creation by enabling designers to focus entirely on creativity and design intent and not on how to use the technology. The art of designing with nature | Teresa van Dongen | TEDxHaarlem

11:12
Nature is magical. She doesn’t need any techniques to make light or bring air humidity to our homes. The wondrous world of bacteria could mean a lot to us. Nature is magical. She doesn’t need any techniques to make light or bring air humidity to our homes. The wondrous world of bacteria could mean a lot to us. Teresa uses this knowledge of nature in her designs. She creates a magnificent play of light that only needs a little push to shine.   In 2015 Teresa won the Dutch Design Award in the Young Designers category. The core and foundation of her work is the combination of her passion for Design, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Teresa‘s goal is to make the techniques of nature visible so it becomes part of our daily life.   This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Japan's Culture - Design

Produced and Lectured by Takahiro Miyao(宮尾尊弘) (MP4): http://www.econej.com/jculture/miyao/designE.MP4 (Japanese: 日本語): http://youtu.be/HkoAqAxgZeE Summary: Japanese design is characterized by a contrast and harmony between natural irregularity and artificial regularity. Also it is simple and practical, as is well known in Japanese product design, where practicality comes from Japan's tradition of craftsmanship and bottom-up interaction between craftsmen and consumers. This is in contrast to the top-down nature of Western design. Figma | Hands on Review | Graphic Design, Web Design, Product Design Software

26:10
Today is a hands on review of Figma. Figma is a collaborative design software for web designer, product designers, and graphic designers. It's a modern design tool that has all the bells and whistles but really focuses on working collaboratively with other designers without overwriting or messing with each others work. It features version control, real-time collaboration, reusable design libraries, and of course solid design tools to get the job done. Remember to Subscribe https://goo.gl/6vCw64 🤘 I hadn't ever really used Figma but have been very interested in getting my hands on it and seeing what it can do. In this review, I cover the basics of Figma, the interface, an overview of the tools and some of it's most enticing features. You can start using it today by visiting their website and creating an account. The browser-based cross-platform nature of it is pretty awesome I have to say. https://www.figma.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ////////// Website http://www.jesseshowalter.com - ////////// Subscribe: https://goo.gl/6vCw64 - ////////// Social Twitter: http://twitter.com/iamjesseshow Anchor: https://anchor.fm/iamjesseshow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamjesseshow Medium: https://medium.com/@iamjesseshow - ////////// Equiptment Vlogging Camera - Panasonic G85 http://amzn.to/2EwumHn - Drone- DJI Spark http://amzn.to/2CpodH9

Alex Davis: Design By Nature!

02:06
Alex Davis's work epitomises ‘Modern India’. His inspirations come mostly from Mother Nature and travelling. His travel on Indian roads resulted in a creation called 'Dented Painted' derived from auto-rickshaws and truck-carts. He is not material specific, but a lot of his work currently is created from metals like brass, copper and stainless steel. Black steel is favourite. His collection of floral sculptures called the 'Hyper Blooms' has been one of his favourite interpretations of flowers, especially 'Poppy', famous for it's red colour and less number of petals. The inherent structures of things which can be expressed in a 3 dimensional format is what interests him to create such products. He has done 6 collections to date which are inspired from Nature and the World around him. Besides these special collections, he also designs furniture, lights and home accents. 'Thali Mirrors' and 'Cocoon Lights' are some creations that have been selling consistently through his store- The ‘Indi Store’ since 1998. One of the first to exhibit collections for Interior and exterior spaces, he has set a bench mark for original and contemporary design. A Winner of several awards for his contribution to the world of Interiors, his work continues to grow and inspire several young designers and artists. How Product Design Impacts Supply Chain

12:17
Okay, first of all, good morning Dustin to you. Thank for this interview, for the opportunity to speak about the subject of how a product design influences supply chains and just coming to your first question, I mean, it's pretty obvious that when you think about the product life cycle which starts with typically with concept in somebody has an idea about a product, more people have an idea, a lot of product then they develop this concept of the product together and once the concept is ready then they go into the real design work which is the KEB [ph] drawings and M-KEB [ph] and the E-KEB [ph] depending what the product is, maybe a plastics design, housings, ourselves are finishing some all of these kind of things.

en concrete as an interpretation of nature and culture the essence of stone; an allegory and fundamental part of our world: rough, natural, simple, profound, constant, calm, sheltering, never repeating its signature. in contrast artificial, shallow and cold materials are shaping our lives, our environment, our existence - caused by our aim for efficiency and effectiveness. resulting in the industrial urbanisation is conformity - however natural materials stand for more attentiveness and maintenance as well as constant development. Through their contact with time, human beings, warmth, coldness, light, wind and water natural materials represent an order of chronological cycles. aim of our experimental studies is to preserve these exact moments, to make them accessible and perceptible. the sensitivity of the observer shall be aroused for the seemingly insignificant. mental spaces shall be opened - soul and spirit shall be enriched by calmness and movement. a material characterised by a surface of aesthetic poverty and restrain is to be created, a deliberately natural appearance, to immerse in the intellectual world of rieder. concrete as a mirror of eternity and present moment. de beton als interpretation von natur und kultur das wesen des steins; sinnbild und elementarer bestandteil unserer welt: schroff, natürlich, einfach, tief, beständig, ruhig, beherbergend, sich in seiner signatur nie wiederholend. im gegensatz dazu prägen künstliche, flache und kalte materialien heute, bedingt durch effizienz- und effektivitätsantriebe größtenteils unser leben, unsere umwelt, unser sein. das resultat der industriellen urbanisierung ist konformität. natürliche materialien hingegen bedeuten neben oftmals mehr achtsamkeit und pflege auch ständige entwicklung - durch die bearbeitung mittels zeit, mensch, wärme, kälte, licht, wind und wasser repräsentieren natürliche materialien eine ordnung zeitlicher zyklen. ziel unserer experimentellen studien war und ist es, genau diese momente zu erhalten zugänglich, erlebbar zu machen. die sensibilität des betrachters soll für das augenscheinlich unbedeutende geweckt werden und gedankenräume öffnen, die ein verweilen gewähren - die seele und geist gleichermaßen durch ruhe und bewegung bereichern. geschaffen werden soll ein material; eine oberfläche, gezeichnet von einer “ästhetik der armut und zurückhaltung“; ein bewusst natürliches antlitz, um in die geistige welt von rieder einzutauchen. beton als spiegel von ewigkeit und augenblick. by 22quadrat http://www.22quadrat.com http://www.rieder.at

CATIA V6 | Industrial Design | CATIA Natural Sketch Showreel

03:41
More information at: http://www.3ds.com/products-services/catia/capabilities/design/ Discover CATIA on LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/catia/ From consumer products to transportation, the creative design process always starts with a sketch. Industrial designers across industries first draw their ideas on paper and then, as the project evolves, move to 3D to explore the design volumes and proportions. CATIA V6 introduces CATIA Natural Sketch, a new breakthrough 3D sketching experience that finally brings together the intuitiveness of creative 2D painting gesture and the power of accurate, realistic 3D modeling.

Fast professional Photoshop rendering for Product Design

36:16
A quick freestyle photoshop rendering of a drill sketch. I cover a bunch of stuff and explain my approach to this kind of piece - working fast and keeping everything nice and simple to create something that still looks slick and professional. The techniques sped through in this video are applicable to a wide range of rendering styles, but it's still very strong: clean up your sketch, flood fill a layer with 50% grey then use a range of brushes, dynamically changing the size and hardness of those brushes, and switching between painting light and dark with a low opacity to build up the tone density. Then masking it out and using hue and saturation adjustment layers to control the different colours, in combination with adjustment layer masks. EASY. Have a look at the video, do try it yourself, and let me know in the comments how you go. If you want to know when I upload new videos then please crash your cursor into the subscribe button and blast the clicker until you are fully subscribed. Like / share / etc. As ever, hit me up in the comments if there's anything you want me to cover in a future video. See you guys in the next video, or if you are one of my students, next time I'm in, and you can show me your pimpin sketches. Freecad tutorial - Product design #009 - Faucet

28:42
In this video, i'm modeling a simple faucet shell, as modern design concept only, not the interior. I was most interested in ability to model this type of products, doesn't have to be faucet, also, how fillets and tickness can handle each other. Still, this faucet model is parametric, but i'll do more experimentations on organic shapes. By modern standards, there shoud be no limitations in designing and bringing the ideas to life. If we're going to model this kind of products, we must take in consideration technical stuff. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Other profiles: Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/tutorialfielddesign/ Blog: https://tutorialfield.blogspot.com/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/u/0/113058524294431076401 Twitter: https://twitter.com/TutorialField - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - music: Youtube_audio_library *** Leslie's Strut - John Deley and the 41 Players *** Stalling - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena *** Heading_West - Audionautix Heading West by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://audionautix.com/ #FreeCAD
