How to use the Oracle SQL PIVOT Clause

11:46
PIVOT allows you to "flip a table on its side", i.e. Columns to Rows / Rows to Columns. Previously we did this with DECODE or CASE. As of Oracle 11g, Oracle Database includes the PIVOT clause (and UNPIVOT). Oracle expert Geoff Wiland from SkillBuilders will demonstrate PIVOT, UNPIVOT, including the use of aggregate functions.

SQL Tutorial - PIVOT

13:11
Another video brought to you by BeardedDev, bringing you tutorials on Business Intelligence, SQL Programming and Data Analysis. In this video I talk about using PIVOT in Microsoft SQL Server. Using PIVOT allows us rotate data from rows to columns making the data more readable. PIVOT is ideal for reporting in SQL Server and can be used as a starting point to visualise trends. In this PIVOT tutorial I demonstrate the difference between how data is presented compared to GROUP BY. PIVOT Syntax SELECT [columns] FROM ( [source_query] ) PIVOT ( [aggr_function]([aggr_column] FOR [spreading_column] IN ([spreading_elements])) SQL Queries in the video: Results using GROUP BY statement SELECT Sales_Customer_Id , DATENAME(MONTH, Sales_Date) AS [Month] , Sales_Amount FROM dbo.Sales GROUP BY Sales_Customer_Id , DATENAME(MONTH, Sales_Date) Results using PIVOT statement SELECT Sales_Customer_Id , [January] , [February] , [March] FROM ( SELECT Sales_Customer_Id , DATENAME(MONTH, Sales_Date) AS [Month] , Sales_Amount FROM dbo.Sales ) AS Src PIVOT ( SUM(Sales_Amount) FOR [Month] IN ([January], [February], [March]) ) AS Pvt Alternative PIVOT statement SELECT [Month] , [1] , [2] , [3] , [4] , [5] , [6] , [7] , [8] FROM ( SELECT Sales_Customer_Id , DATENAME(MONTH, Sales_Date) AS [Month] , Sales_Amount FROM dbo.Sales ) AS Src PIVOT ( SUM(Sales_Amount) FOR Sales_Customer_Id IN ([1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]) ) AS Pvt Please feel free to post comments.

Oracle LISTAGG Function

04:57
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-listagg/ The Oracle LISTAGG function allows you to aggregate or combine string values from multiple rows into a single row. For example, it turns this data: FIRST_NAME Adam Brad Carrie Into this data: FIRST_NAME Adam, Brad, Carrie The same data is shown, but it’s in one row and not multiple. It’s a valuable string manipulation function, and once you know what it is and how it works, you’ll be able to use it in your queries as needed. So what does it look like? The function is: LISTAGG ( measure_expr [, delimiter]) WITHIN GROUP (order_by_clause) [OVER query_partition_clause] These parameters are: measure_expr: This is a column or expression that you want to concatenate the values of. In the example above, it was the first_name column. Mandatory. delimiter: This is the character between each of the measure_expr values. Optional, the default is a comma. order_by_clause: This is the order that the values from the measure_expr are listed. Mandatory. query_partition_clause: This allows you to use LISTAGG as an analytic function, allowing you to show LISTAGG in groups for different rows. One thing to be aware of is that the output of the Oracle LISTAGG function is limited to 4,000 bytes. If you get more than this, you’ll receive an error. The most common way around this that I’ve seen is to write a custom function and use a CLOB. Watch the video to find out more and see some examples. For more information about the Oracle LISTAGG function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-listagg/

This is one of the sql questions that is very commonly asked. I have a web page with a textbox. When I enter a table name in the textbox and when I click "Load Data" button, we want to retrieve data from that respective table and display it on the page. Copy the SQL Script to create the tables from my blog using the link below http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2017/04/dynamic-sql-table-name-variable.html Create the following stored procedure. Notice we are passing table name as a parameter to the stored prcoedure. In the body of the stored procedure we are concatenating strings to build our dynamic sql statement. In our previous videos we discussed that this open doors for SQL injection. Create procedure spDynamicTableName @TableName nvarchar(100) As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + @TableName Execute sp_executesql @sql End So the obvious question that comes to our mind is, why are we not creating parameterised sql statement instead. The answers is we can't. SQL Server does not allow table names and column names to be passed as parameters. Notice in the example below, we are creating a parameterised query with @TabName as a parameter. When we execute the following code, the procedure gets created successfully. Create procedure spDynamicTableName1 @TableName nvarchar(100) As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from @TabName' Execute sp_executesql @sql, N'@TabName nvarchar(100)', @TabName = @TableName End But when we try to execute it we get an error - Must declare the table variable "@TabName" Execute spDynamicTableName1 N'Countries' Add a Web Page to the project that we have been working with in our previous video. Name it "DynamicTableName.aspx". Copy and paste the HTML from my blog using the link below http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2017/04/dynamic-sql-table-name-variable.html Copy and paste the code from my blog in the code-behind page http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2017/04/dynamic-sql-table-name-variable.html At this point, run the application and type the following text in the "Table Name" textbox and click "Load Data" button. Notice "SalesDB" database is dropped. Our application is prone to SQL injection as we have implemented dynamic sql in our stored procedure by concatenating strings instead of using parameters. Employees; Drop database SalesDB One way to prevent SQL injection in this case is by using SQL Server built-in function - QUOTENAME(). We will discuss QUOTENAME() function in detail in our next video. For now understand that by default, this function wraps that string that is passed to it in a pair of brackets. SELECT QUOTENAME('Employees') returns [Employees] Modify the stored procedure to use QUOTENAME() function as shown below. Alter procedure spDynamicTableName @TableName nvarchar(100) As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + QUOTENAME(@TableName) Execute sp_executesql @sql End At this point, type the following text in the "Table Name" textbox and click "Load Data" button. Notice you will see a message - Invalid object name 'Employees; Drop database SalesDB'. Also "SalesDB" database is not dropped. Employees; Drop database SalesDB The entire text in "Table Name" textbox is wrapped in a pair of brackets by the QUOTENAME function and is treated as table name. Since we do have a table with the specified name, we get the error - Invalid object name.

Oracle COUNT Function

04:43
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-count/ The Oracle COUNT function is used to count the number of rows from the column, or number of values, provided to it. It’s commonly used to find the number of rows returned by a SELECT query. The syntax of the COUNT function is: COUNT ( [ * | [ DISTINCT | ALL ] expression) [ over (analytic_clause) ] There’s a lot of square brackets here, indicating optional parameters and choices. This just means you can use the COUNT function in a few different ways: COUNT(*) COUNT(DISTINCT expression) COUNT(ALL expression) COUNT(*) OVER (analytic_clause) COUNT(DISTINCT expression) OVER (analytic_clause) COUNT(ALL expression) OVER (analytic_clause) It can be used as an aggregate or analytic function. The parameters of the COUNT function are: - expression: The expression to count the values of. This can be a column or a set of values, for example. - analytic_clause: This is used to specify the criteria for an analytic query. COUNT(*) is the most common way to use this function, I’ve found. As COUNT(*) is an aggregate function, like all aggregate functions the columns mentioned in the SELECT clause need to exist in the GROUP BY clause. NULL values are ignored by COUNT(expression), but they are counted when using COUNT(*). COUNT(*) has the exact same calculation and performance as COUNT(1). For more information about the Oracle COUNT function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-count/

SQL Pivot, a working copy-paste example

ORACLE SQL AND PL/SQL INTERVIEW QUESTION : DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ROWID AND ROWNUM WITH EXAMPLE

07:35
In this video tutorial, we discuss the pseudo column rowid and rownum in oracle sql. After watching this video you would be able to understand the basic difference between rowid and a rownum pseudo columns of oracle database. Rowid returns the exact location of the row in the database, hence whenever you retrive a record based on rowid, it is the fastest retrival possible. Whereas for each row returned by a query, the ROWNUM pseudocolumn returns a number indicating the order in which Oracle selects the row from a table or set of joined rows. Welcome to Pivot Tables and Pivot Charts Course

05:08
In data processing, a pivot table is a data summarization tool found in data visualization programs such as spreadsheets or business intelligence software. Among other functions, a pivot table can automatically sort, count, total or give the average of the data stored in one table or spreadsheet, displaying the results in a second table showing the summarized data. Pivot tables are also useful for quickly creating unweighted cross tabulations. The user sets up and changes the summary's structure by dragging and dropping fields graphically. This "rotation" or pivoting of the summary table gives the concept its name. The term pivot table is a generic phrase used by multiple vendors. In the United States, Microsoft Corporation has trademarked the specific compound word form, PivotTable.[1] Pivot tables can be seen as a simplification of the more complete and complex online analytical processing concepts (OLAP). In their book Pivot Table Data Crunching,[2] Bill Jelen and Mike Alexander refer to Pito Salas as the "father of pivot tables". While working on a concept for a new program that would eventually become Lotus Improv, Salas noted that spreadsheets have patterns of data. A tool that could help the user recognize these patterns would help to build advanced data models quickly. With Improv, users could define and store sets of categories, then change views by dragging category names with the mouse. This core functionality would provide the model for pivot tables. Lotus Development released Improv in 1991 on the NeXT platform. A few months after the release of Improv, Brio Technology published a standalone Macintosh implementation, called DataPivot (with technology eventually patented in 1999[3]). Borland purchased the DataPivot technology in 1992 and implemented it in their own spreadsheet application, Quattro Pro. In 1993 the Microsoft Windows version of Improv appeared. Early in 1994 Microsoft Excel 5 [4] brought a new functionality called a "PivotTable" to market. Microsoft further improved this feature in later versions of Excel: Excel 97 included a new and improved PivotTable Wizard, the ability to create calculated fields, and new pivot cache objects that allow developers to write Visual Basic for Applications macros to create and modify pivot tables Excel 2000 introduced "Pivot Charts" to represent pivot-table data graphically In 2007 Oracle Corporation made PIVOT and UNPIVOT operators available in Oracle Database 11g.
