Think about some of the great portrait photos you've seen before. Maybe it's Steve McCurry's famous 'Afghan Girl' on the cover of National Geographic? John Lennon's cover shot by Annie Leibovitz in Rolling Stone? I can still remember the impact those shots had on me the first time I saw them and I've been trying to perfect my portrait technique ever since. In this lesson I'll cover the most common reason why portrait photos don't turn out as well as you'd like and also give you some of my favorite tips to improve your own shots. This is how I got into Magazine Photography and the story waiting to see my photo on the cover of Rat rod magazine I am Jeffrey Eatley and this is my Social Vlog Experiment. What does that mean exactly? I am going to put myself out there in the world of social media in order to create relationships, experiences, and knowledge that can translate into the real world. I want to meet people online to get to know them and then meet them in real life in order to document the experience. Social media to me has always been something to enhance the real world, not to replace it. So many seem to hide behind it, not getting out in public, not seeing the world. I want to know if I build something here if it will translate into real-world experiences. I want to use this platform to create change, to help others, to enhance my life. Yes, Social media is amazing and can allow us all to see the world as a smaller place. Allowing us to connect with people all over the world. But does that make us worldly? Getting out there and traveling, touching, verbally communicating and interacting with other humans does. It's the true life interactions that create meaningful relationships, experience, and knowledge. I think this is the real reason for social media and this is my experiment to prove it, once and for all. I hope you join me by subscribing to the channel, but more so, I hope you communicate and interact with me and be a part of the growth of this experiment. By documenting it all, not only can I create the world I want to live in, I can help by getting so many others names out there for the world to know. By my experiences, it could open doors for others. I want to show you the prep, the poses and the lighting that go into shooting one of those classic fitness magazine covers that you see in the supermarket checkout line. White background, clean, crisp commercial lighting, three quarter length pose, really fit and sexy subject who looks really happy. Now do you know what I am talking about? Fitness photography is actually pretty easy to do with the right gear and planning. So let’s talk first about why you would do it or should you do it the next time you are working with a model on his or her portfolio. If you are a photographer that works with models this type of fitness shot can serve several purposes in a modeling portfolio. 1. It looks like a tearsheet. I am not suggesting you ad a title and words and make a pretend fitness magazine cover. Please don’t be that photographer. I am simply pointing out the psychology - since the photo looks like one of those shots you see on the magazines - it has a subliminal effect of making the model look experienced. We are not saying that he or she was actually on a cover. 2. This shot is a great body shot for the models book. Contrary to what Tyra Banks and Janice Dickinson claimed in their reality TV shows - a model doesn’t have to pose nude. In fact a model doesn’t have to pose in lingerie or even a swimsuit if that makes them uncomfortable. From a business perspective it is an economy of scale - the more things the model is comfortable with - then the more opportunities that may exist. All that said, if you are working with a model that is uncomfortable being photographed in swimwear or lingerie - the fitness shot is a great way to be able to show off body proportions without showing too much skin. 3. It's a great way to show that the model really is in great shape. Action fitness poses are often not the most flattering. Even though this type of shot is very commercial and even kind of cheesy - it provides a modeling agency and potential client with a LOT of valuable information about the model. 40 Best LIFE Magazine Covers: Life magazine, stylized LIFE, is an American magazine that ran weekly from 1883 to 1972, published initially as a humor and general interest magazine. Time founder Henry Luce bought the magazine in 1936, solely so that he could acquire the rights to its name, and shifted it to a role as a weekly news magazine with a strong emphasis on photojournalism. Life was published weekly until 1972, as an intermittent "special" until 1978, and as a monthly from 1978 to 2002. When Life was founded in 1883, it was developed as similar to the British magazine, Punch. It was published for 53 years as a general-interest light entertainment magazine, heavy on illustrations, jokes and social commentary. It featured some of the greatest writers, editors, illustrators and cartoonists of its era, including Charles Dana Gibson, Norman Rockwell and Jacob Hartman Jr. Gibson became the editor and owner of the magazine after John Ames Mitchell died in 1918. During its later years, the magazine offered brief capsule reviews (similar to those in The New Yorker) of plays and movies currently running in New York City, but with the innovative touch of a colored typographic bullet resembling a traffic light, appended to each review: green for a positive review, red for a negative one, and amber for mixed notices. The Luce Life was the first all-photographic American news magazine, and it dominated the market for more than 40 years. The magazine sold more than 13.5 million copies a week at one point; it was so popular that President Harry S. Truman, Sir Winston Churchill, and General Douglas MacArthur all had their memoirs serialized in its pages. Luce purchased the rights to the name from the publishers of the first Life but sold its subscription list and features to another magazine; there was no editorial continuity between the two publications. Perhaps one of the best-known pictures printed in the magazine was Alfred Eisenstaedt’s photograph of a nurse in a sailor’s arms, snapped on August 14, 1945, as they celebrated Victory over Japan Day in New York City. The magazine's role in the history of photojournalism is considered its most important contribution to publishing. Life was wildly successful for two generations before its prestige was diminished by economics and changing tastes. Labels: covers, magazine

After working on the latest cover for Macworld Magazine I wanted to show what is involved in making a cover. I focused on the three main areas: the photography, photoshop and design. I chose a time lapse format to convey lots of information in a small amount of time. The only drawback of time lapse is that since half a day goes by in 30 seconds, the whole process seam so easy! Lots of details were left out of the design process (like the cover meetings and rounds of layout options). I began to photograph the design process after the layouts had already been narrowed down to just three cover designs. On the technical side, for the time lapse video, I used the Canon 5D Mark II with a 24mm-70mm zoom. I chose the 5D because of its great image quality with high ISO's. Canon's sRAW1 gave me the flexibility of a RAW file with the file size of a jpeg. The actual Macworld cover was taken with a Phase One P65+ digital back attached to a 4x5 Sinar X camera with a 65mm lens. Many thanks to Rob Schultz for allowing me to invade his office and literally shoot over his shoulder. The music was used with permission by The Brokenmusicbox.
