9. Send app-specific error message with RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR.

02:26
If you execute a SELECT-INTO that does not identify any rows, the PL/SQL runtime engine raises: ORA-01403 and the error message (retrieved via SQLERRM or DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_ERROR_STACK) is simply "No data found". That may be exactly what you want your users to see. But there is a very good chance you'd like to offer something more informative, such as "An employee with that ID is not in the system." In this case, you can use RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR, as in: CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY employees_mgr IS FUNCTION onerow (employee_id_in IN hr.employees.employee_id%TYPE) RETURN hr.employees%ROWTYPE RESULT_CACHE IS l_employee hr.employees%ROWTYPE; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_employee FROM hr.employees WHERE employee_id = employee_id_in; RETURN l_employee; EXCEPTION WHEN NO_DATA_FOUND THEN raise_application_error ( -20000, 'An employee with that ID is not in the system.'); END; END; Related blog post: http://stevenfeuersteinonplsql.blogspot.com/2016/03/nine-good-to-knows-about-plsql-error.html ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. 4. Outer block unaware of error if not re-raised.

03:03
If you do not re-raise an exception in your exception handler, the outer block doesn't know an error has occurred. Just sayin'. You have a subprogram that invokes another subprogram (or nested block). That "inner" subprogram fails with an exception. It contains an exception handler. It logs the error, but then neglects to re-raise that exception (or another). Control passes out to the invoking subprogram, and it continues executing statements, completely unaware that an error occurred in that inner block. Which means, by the way, that a call to SQLCODE will return 0. This may be just what you want, but make sure you do this deliberately. 5. Capture call stack, error code, error stack, error backtrace.

05:59
Ideally, this is a total non-issue for you, because you simply invoke a generic logger procedure in your exception handlers (example and recommendation: download and use Logger, an open source utility that does almost anything and everything you can think of). But if you are about to write your own (or are using a home-grown logging utility), make sure that you cal and store in your log (likely a relational table), the values returned by: SQLCODE DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_CALL_STACK (or corresponding subprograms in 12.1's UTL_CALL_STACK package) - answers question "How did I get here?" DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_ERROR_STACK (or corresponding subprograms in 12.1's UTL_CALL_STACK package) - answers question "What is my error message/stack?" We recommend using this instead of SQLERRM. DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_ERROR_BACKTRACE (or corresponding subprograms in 12.1's UTL_CALL_STACK package) - answers question "On what line was the error raised?" PL/SQL: Mutating Triggers Part-1

06:24
In this tutorial, you'll learn... PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

Oracle NVL Function Explained with Examples

09:25
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-nvl-nvl2-logical-functions/ The Oracle NVL function allows you to check a value and return a different value if that value is NULL. It’s great for using another value if the first one is NULL or an optional value, for example people’s phone numbers. It’s also good alongside aggregate functions and grouping so you can see what the difference is between a subtotal row and an actual NULL value. The syntax of the Oracle NVL function is: NVL( check_value, replace_value ) The parameters are: - check_value (mandatory): This is the value that is displayed to the user. It is also the value that is checked for NULL. - replace_value (mandatory): This is the value that appears if the check_value is NULL. The function can use many different data types as parameters: string, date, or numeric. However, both parameters need to be the same type. For more information about the Oracle NVL function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-nvl-nvl2-logical-functions/

First Do No Harm: Deferred Checked Exception Handling Promotes Reliability

37:33
Unlike ignoring return codes, ignoring exceptions does not lead to difficult debugging; on the contrary, deferred handling of expected exceptions arises naturally because handlers (1) potentially mask bugs; (2) add to the amount of code being debugged simultaneously; (3) often require a scope outside the method being coded, leading to conflict; and (4) compete for attention with coding the functionality, leading to neglect. Deferred handling overcomes these problems, and after debugging, error coding is the focus of a refactoring. With Java, deferred checked exception handling is not a natural outcome. This presentation discusses tools and techniques that promote reliability by supporting deferred error handling and its refactoring. Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates. 7. Compile-time warnings help avoid "WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL".

03:23
One of Tom Kyte's favorite pet peeves, the following exception sections "swallow up" errors. EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL; EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE (SQLERRM); In fact, any exception handler that does not re-raise the same exception or another, runs the risk of hiding errors from the calling subprogram, your users, and yourself as you debug your code. Generally, you should log the error, then re-raise it. There are certainly some cases in which this advice does not hold (for example: a function that fetches a single row for a primary key. If there is no row for the key, it's not an application error, so just return NULL). In those cases, include a comment so that the person maintaining your code in the distant future knows that you weren't simply ignoring the Wisdom of the Kyte. Example: EXCEPTION WHEN OTHERS THEN /* No company or this ID, let calling subprogram decide what to do */ RETURN NULL; One way to avoid this problem is to turn on compile-time warnings. Then when your program unit is compiled, you will be warned if the compiler has identified an exception handler that does not contain a RAISE statement or a call to RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR. What is Autonomous transaction in Oracle

05:05
What is Autonomous transaction in Oracle. This is very frequently asking question in Interview. Hello Friend, in this Video You can learn how we can give the answer of Autonomous Transactions. An autonomous transaction is available from Oracle 8i. It is a very cool, useful, unique and powerful feature in oracle. An autonomous transaction is an independent transaction that is initiated by another transaction. It must contain at least one Structured Query Language (SQL) statement. When an autonomous transaction is called, the original transaction (calling transaction) is temporarily suspended. The autonomous transaction must commit or roll back before it returns control to the calling transaction. Once changes have been made by an autonomous transaction, those changes are visible to other transactions in the database. Autonomous transactions can be nested. For use Autonomous Transactions feature in program we have to use PRAGMA AUTONOMOUS_TRANSACTION Key word in Program When to use Autonomous Transactions? • Logging mechanism you need to log an error to your database log table. On the other hand, you need to roll back your core transaction because of the error. And you don't want to roll back over other log entries. • Commits and rollbacks in your database triggers If you define a trigger as an autonomous transaction, then you can commit and/or roll back in that code. • Software usage meter You want to keep track of how often a program is called during an application session. This information is not dependent on, and cannot affect, the transaction being processed in the application. Mutation Error Using autonomous transaction we can avoid mutation error. What is EXCEPTION HANDLING? What does EXCEPTION HANDLING mean? EXCEPTION HANDLING meaning

It is provided by specialized programming language constructs, computer hardware mechanisms like interrupts or operating system IPC facilities like signals. In general, an exception breaks the normal flow of execution and executes a pre-registered exception handler. The details of how this is done depends on whether it is a hardware or software exception and how the software exception is implemented. Some exceptions, especially hardware ones, may be handled so gracefully that execution can resume where it was interrupted. Alternative approaches to exception handling in software are error checking, which maintains normal program flow with later explicit checks for contingencies reported using special return values or some auxiliary global variable such as C's errno or floating point status flags; or input validation to preemptively filter exceptional cases. Some programmers write software with error reporting features that collect details that may be helpful in fixing the problem, and display those details on the screen, or store them to a file such as a core dump, or in some cases an automatic error reporting system such as Windows Error Reporting can automatically phone home and email those details to the programmers.

What is Parameterized Cursor in Oracle

03:39
What is Parameterized Cursor in Oracle. In simple words a cursor with parameter is called parameterized cursor. PL/SQL allows developer to pass parameters into cursors. Same as like we can pass parameter into function and procedure. PL/SQL Parameterized cursor pass the parameters into a cursor and use them in to query. Cursor becomes more reusable using Cursor parameters. PL/SQL Parameterized cursor define only data type of parameter and not need to define it's length. In Parameterized cursor scope of the parameters are local within program only. Optionally, we can also give a default value for the parameter, which will take effect if no value is passed to the cursor. Key point 1. Scope of the parameters are locally 2. You can assign default value to a cursor parameter. 3. Cursor becomes more reusable with Cursor parameters. 4.PL/SQL Parameterized cursor define only data type of parameter and not need to define it's length.
