35 - A Visit to Fine Woodworking Magazine

16:45
This video was originally published on December 30, 2007 & was never added to YouTube...until today! Original post on our site with additional information, plans, questions & comments: http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/a-visit-to-fine-woodworking/ A few months ago we paid a visit to the offices of Fine Woodworking Magazine and The Taunton Press. It was a great experience and incredibly cool seeing how an initial idea becomes an article. This video gives you a behind the scenes look into that exact process. You'll also get to see the Fine Woodworking shop and we'll hear from numerous key staff members as they explain their roles in the process. The Wood Whisperer is education and entertainment for the modern woodworker! After numerous requests, I have decided to make a shop tour video. This is a stand alone workshop that I built by myself with the help of my wife & daughters (and some family & friends). We started this originally in the summer of 2015. But for a long time it was planning and layout. I would be moving the workshop from a small 9’ x 25’ area to this shop which was 20’ x 30’. We did everything almost by hand. Even the foundation, my daughter and I dug over the summer with shovels. After about 9 months we had a fully functioning workshop, although without the exterior siding. That’s where it still sits today. I had so many projects & jobs to complete, that it got put on hold again and again. But I will get the siding done this year for sure. We will do it ourselves of course. Just like the rest. It has been an amazing family adventure!

The Highland Woodworker - Episode 27

36:55
Mike Pekovich isn’t the ordinary woodworking magazine art director. He is also a master woodworker whose talents at Fine Woodworking Magazine have significantly influenced thousand of woodworkers over the past nineteen years. I recently visited with Mike in his wonderful Connecticut workshop to hear his story and see how he designs and crafts his beautiful pieces of furniture. There are tool collectors and then there are real tool collectors. James Currie has been collecting tools of all types for forty years. If you can look past all of his other collectibles, he has most every pre-1950 American made wood or metal plane, auger bit, brace drawknife, saw, hammer and any other tool in his collection. This is a real slice of American tool history authentically presented. Fine Woodworking Magazine’s “Finer Points” takes hand-cut dovetails to a new level. Assistant Art Director John Tetreault demonstrates his method for crafting mitered dovetails. After watching his demonstration you will want to give them a try. Every woodworker should be honing their chisels and plane irons for consistent results at the bench. Lie-Nielsen has a new, beautifully machined honing guide that could be a replacement for your Eclipse style guide or be the first and only one you’ll ever buy. Take a look at this excellent tool in our “Toolbox” segment.
Woodworking shop remodel

13:47
Woodworkers love their tools and every woodworking shop needs a tool cabinet. I made a decorative cabinet for mine with a tree facade that has been a great experience to create and share with everyone. I look forward to using the space to make more videos about current projects I am working on. My woodshop tackles projects that can range in a wide variety of woodworking. Everything from spoons and candlesticks to chairs, furniture and the occasional odd item. Follow along with me as I take on my next woodworking challenge. Journey of a Master Craftsman: In the Shop with Alf Sharp Part 1

10:35
I had the opportunity to spend a day with woodworking master craftsman, Alf Sharp, and to hear his story and journey to becoming a woodworker making fine furniture. In this three part series we’ll talk about Alf’s history, his views and knowledge on woodworking skills, and the ongoing maker movement. His journey started with a short stint in Law School and wound its way through work in the skilled trades and owning a large manufacturing business before finally finding his true passion in building high end furniture. Alf has been building woodworking projects for the last 30 years and has concentrated on museum-quality, one-of-a-kind furniture, primarily in the 18th century American style. He is a master of high and low relief carving, inlay, marquetry, and French polishing. King's Ransom Mallet KIng's Fine Woodworking Challenge

04:00
This mallet is called King's Ransom! It's my entry into the King's Fine Woodworking mallet challenge. I was on hangouts the other night with a bunch of Makers. We were chatting and just talking shop and other things. Daniel Harju was messing around the shop at the same time. He came back to the camera after a while. He produced a mallet. He made the tool while on hangout. So I said, or maybe it was Patrick of Patrick's Workshop....well I said there's a challenge going and that he should enter the mallet he just made. I ended up getting inspired and made my own. Check it out. My site https://rocknwoodworks.com/ Harju's site http://www.countrybed.com/ Thanks to James King for the challenge. This is my first time making a mallet. His Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm8CRHDTfYNd1MemitETdbA/videos Website by Makers for Makers https://harnealmedia.com/

75 - New 60 gallon Compressor installation for the Woodworking Shop Ingersoll Rand

Woodworkers helping other woodworkers. Share advice, get project ideas. Free tips. Insider information. Get the best deals on lumber & tools. http://www.facebook.com/groups/KingsFineWoodworkingCommunity Our old 60 gallon Husky Compressor finally went out. It was actually because I forgot to check the oil, and it became too low, and seized up the pump. Very sad for sure. So, on the advice of a friend, and several others in our King’s Fine Woodworking Community Group, I went with an Ingersoll Rand 60 gallon compressor. This video covers how we swapped out the two. One interesting thing to note. Is that the Ingersoll Rand, I was told by many, is the upper end of compressors, and the Husky is the lower end. Yet the prove between the two, was only about $65.00. Not really a huge difference for something with a much better reputation and warranty. The compressor was bought entirely by us, with no sponsorship of any kind. I don’t really know how good it is. But, I can use it for 6 months or a year, and then report back on it for those interested.
