THE ZOMBIES - TIME OF THE SEASON - Odessey and Oracle (1968) HiDef :: SOTW #55

Bergo '45 Song of the Week #55 - Calvin's Pick for 7/20/14: http://www.bergo45.com "Time of the Season" by The Zombies from Odessey and Oracle (1968) CBS Records "Tell it to me slowly. Lots of people may be pushing and shoving. But give it to me easy; it's the time of the season for loving." - Calvin Lewis This is a weekly dive into the musical mind of Bergo '45. Each week, a new song is chosen by a different member of the band. Check out the playlist to see all of the past selections. Grab a towel and give it a listen.... The Zombies are an English rock band, formed in 1961 in St Albans and led by Rod Argent (piano, organ and vocals) and Colin Blunstone (vocals). The group scored British and American hits in 1964 with "She's Not There". In the US, two further singles, "Tell Her No" in 1965 and, in 1969, "Time of the Season", were also successful. Their 1968 album, Odessey and Oracle, comprising twelve songs by the group's principal songwriters, Argent and Chris White, is ranked number 100 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In 1967 the Zombies signed to CBS Records for whom they recorded the album Odessey and Oracle (odyssey was accidentally misspelled by Terry Quirk, an art teacher who designed the cover.) Because the band's budget could not cover session musicians, they used a Mellotron. As another concession toward the limited budget, Rod Argent and Chris White (who, due to their songwriting royalties, had earned more than the rest of the members) personally paid for the stereo mixes. By the time Odessey and Oracle was released in April 1968, the group had disbanded (in December 1967). The album sold poorly and was given a US release only because musician Al Kooper, then signed to Columbia Records, convinced his label of the album's merits. One of its tracks, "Time of the Season", written by Argent, was released as a single and eventually (1969) became a nationwide hit (Billboard Hot 100 peak position: No.3). Zombies - Time Of The Season HD

03:34
"Time of the Season" is a song by The Zombies, featured on their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle. It was written by keyboard player Rod Argent and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in August 1967. Several other songs from Odessey and Oracle were released as singles prior to "Time of the Season". Columbia Records supported the album and its singles at the urging of new A&R Rep, Al Kooper. One of the singles was the uncommercial sounding "Butcher's Tale", which Columbia thought might catch on as an anti-war statement, at the time a popular trend. "Time of the Season" was only released at Kooper's urging, after previous singles flopped, and made its breakthrough in early 1969, over a year after the band split up. It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March and #1 in Canada. It did not chart in the band's native Britain, although in mid-1969 it peaked at #2 on the South African hit parade. The song's characteristics include the unique voice of lead singer Colin Blunstone, the memorable bass riff (which is similar to Ben E. King's hit "Stand By Me"), and Rod Argent's fast-paced psychedelic improvisation. The lyrics are an archetypical depiction of the emotions surrounding the Summer of Love. It is famous for such call-and-response verses as "What's your name? (What's your name?) / Who's your daddy? (Who's your daddy?) / Is he rich? (Is he rich like me?)" approximately 50 seconds into the track. Both stereo and monaural original releases contain vocal responses. In 1998, Big Beat Records released a CD reissue of Odessey and Oracle containing both the original stereo and mono versions of "Time of The Season". It also featured a newly remixed alternate version containing instrumental backing underneath the vocals during the entire chorus. These instrumental backings had been mixed out on the original 1968 stereo and mono versions to create a cappella vocal sections. Music critic Antonio Mendez called it one of the sublime songs on Odessey and Oracle. "Time of The Season" is frequently used in pop culture to represent the late 1960s. In that sense, it is featured in the films 1969, Awakenings, A Walk on the Moon and Riding the Bullet, all of which depict the year of 1969. "Time of the Season" is played in the background of The Simpsons episode "D'oh-in In the Wind", in which Homer decides to follow the footsteps of his mother and become a hippie. In the South Park episodes "The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka" and "201" it is used in flashback scenes portraying the Vietnam War. It was also featured in the 2005 film Dear Wendy, it is also referenced in the final words of Dick's letter addressed to Wendy. The song was also featured on the HBO series, Big Love. The NBC series American Dreams, which depicts the mid and late 1960s in American society, featured the song in its third season episode "So Long, Farewell". "Tell Her No" and "She's Not There", The Zombies' other major hits in the U.S., were also used in the show; the latter were included in the series' soundtrack. It is also common for the song to appear in romantic scenes, as in the aforementioned film 1969. In the Friends episode "The One With the Flashback", the song is played in a dream sequence where Rachel fantasizes about Chandler. In the final scene of the Will and Grace episode "Marry Me A Little", it is used to represent Grace's joy after marrying Leo. "Time of the Season" is also featured in a scene of the 1999 NBC miniseries The '60s. The song's usage in this particular scene was anachronistic, however, since it was supposed to portray 1965. The same is true of the film Shanghai Knights, which is supposed to depict 1887. "Time of the Season" has been featured in several TV commercials, such as a 1999 Tampax ad set at the Woodstock Festival, a 2005 Fidelity Investments commercial, a 2006 ad for Sprite (in which a chorus of flowers with human faces performs an a cappella version of the song, a 2006 ad for Magners Irish Cider, and a 2008 Crest ad in Mexico. It was also used in the advertising campaigns of Nissan Tiida in Japan (2004), Greece (2007), and Russia (2008). In sports, it was featured in "Free Your Mind", the 16th video in the Transworld Skateboarding series. During the 2006 playoffs, the song was played in Shea Stadium as the home-team New York Mets took the field. The song appears on the video game Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore and DJ Hero. The song appears in the movie The Debt released in the U.S. in August 2011. The song is regularly played with a psychedelic video at Las Vegas' Fremont Street Experience on a four-block long Viva Vision overhead screen with a 500,000 watt sound system, the video titled Signs of Life. The song was played during the 2013 supernatural horror movie The Conjurin. Wikipedia

Hung Up On A Dream - The Zombies

03:02
From Odessey & Oracle. (Rod Argent) Well I remember yesterday Just drifting slowly through a crowded street With neon darkness shimmering through the haze A sea of faces rippling in the heat And from that nameless changing crowd A sweet vibration seemed to fill the air I stood astounded staring hard At men with flowers resting in their hair... A sweet confusion filled my mind Until I woke up only finding everything was just a dream A dream unusual of its kind That gave me peace and blew my mind And now I'm hung up on a dream... They spoke with soft persuading words About a living creed of gentle love And turned me on to sounds unheard And showed me strangest clouded sights above Which gentle touched my aching mind And soothed the wanderings of my troubled brain Sometimes I think I'll never find Such purity and peace of mind again...

The Zombies Live Odessey and Oracle

14:43
On their Odyssey and Oracle US tour, The Zombies original band perform Side A tracks from their classic rock album: Care Of Cell 44, A Rose For Emily, Maybe After He's Gone, Beechwood Park and Brief Candles live in concert at the Saban Theater, Beverly Hills, CA on October 24, 2015. Their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is ranked number 100 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The Zombies current line up is Colin Blunstone on vocals, Rod Argent on keyboards/vocals, Jim Rodford on bass guitar, Tom Toomey on lead guitar, Steve Rodford on drums. Original members Chris White and Hugh Grundy along with Darian Sahanaja (of the Brian Wilson Band) and Vivienne Boucherat join during the entire Odessey and Oracle album performance during set 2. --- THE LATEST VOLUME of MOJO ’60s March 7, 2017, MOJO’s decade-specific sister magazine, features a brand new catch-up with ’60s cult heroes The Zombies. The venerable group, still led by original undead Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, are set to tour the US later this month, and are also due to play their classic Odessey And Oracle album in its entirety at the prestigious London Palladium on September 29, 2017. “I’m mystified that people are still discovering the record,” says Blunstone, speaking to Lois Wilson in MOJO ’60s Volume 9. “I can only explain the renewed interest through word of mouth. Musicians like Paul Weller and Dave Grohl often say how much they like the album and that has led to its reassessment and helped introduce it to new generations.” Odessey And Oracle occupies an exceptional place in the rock canon. Widely proclaimed a work of genius comparable with The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, it is also, simultaneously somehow, a well-kept secret. In many respects, this dichotomy is symptomatic of the position in which the band found themselves back in early 1968 just prior to the album’s release. Formed in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in the early ’60s, The Zombies arrived in the disguise of a typical beat group of the time. Their debut single, She’s Not There (released in August 1964), provided them with a Top 20 UK hit and peaked at Number 2 in the US, the track characterised by Colin Blunstone’s winsome vocal and composer Rod Argent’s electric piano. In terms of commercial pop success, they never bettered it. However, by 1967 The Zombies’ sound had grown more sophisticated and they’d signed to CBS, beginning work on a more ambitious second album. Their budget was modest – a mere £1000, with sessions beginning in June and using downtime at Abbey Road and Olympic Studios. However, by the time Odessey And Oracle emerged in April ’68, the five-piece of Blunstone, Argent, Paul Atkinson (guitar), Chris White (bass) and Hugh Grundy (drums) had effectively split. The failure of two singles prior to the album’s release – Friends Of Mine (October ’67) and Care Of Cell 44 (released November ’67) – contributed to their disillusionment with the industry, exacerbating internal tensions over the band’s musical direction. Since then Odessey’s reputation has grown amongst connoisseurs and, to a degree, mainstream audiences. The album was afforded further exposure when, from the late ’90s onwards, key track Time Of The Season was used in a string of TV commercials to sell goods as diverse as women’s hygiene products, soft drinks and cider.

The Zombies - Begin Here (full album) official

34:09
Begin Here is the first album by the British pop rock band the Zombies, released in March 1965. The American version (titled The Zombies) repeated many of the tracks from it, but, as was common in those days, deleted some and substituted others. The 1999 CD reissue on Big Beat expands the track line-up substantially with the addition of three songs from the band's 1965 UK EP The Zombies and alternative versions of "Sticks and Stones" and "It's Alright with Me", as well as demos of "I Know She Will" and "I'll Keep Trying". The demos of these last two tunes do not have the overdubs on the versions available on other albums. The song "The Way I Feel Inside" was used in director Wes Anderson's film The Life Aquatic and is included in the film soundtrack. Additionally, the song "She's Not There" as covered by Santana appears in Renny Harlin's film The Long Kiss Goodnight.

On Saturday, June 15th, 2013, concert-goers were privy to watch rock bands such as The Zombies, Django Django, and Binki Shapiro & Adam Green perform at the iconic venue. The Zombies are an English rock band, formed in 1962 in St Albans and led by Rod Argent (piano, organ and vocals) and Colin Blunstone (vocals). The group formed in 1962 in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, and gained their initial reputation playing the Old Verulamians Rugby Club in that city. Their choice of names was out of desperation, and the Zombies won out over Chatterley and the Gamekeepers, according to Blunstone and White. After winning a beat-group competition sponsored by the London Evening News, they signed to Decca and recorded their first hit, "She's Not There." In 1967 the Zombies signed to CBS Records for whom they recorded the album Odessey and Oracle and by time this perennial album was released in April 1968, the group had disbanded (in December 1967). After the Zombies disbanded, Rod Argent formed a band called Argent in 1969, with Chris White as a non-performing songwriter. Atkinson worked in A&R at Columbia Records and Grundy joined him there after a brief spell in auto sales. Colin Blunstone started a solo career after a brief period outside the music business, including working in the burglary claims section of an insurance company. Both Argent and White provided him with new songs. He also did studio vocals for The Alan Parsons Project. In 2011 "The Zombies featuring Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent" released their new studio album Breathe Out, Breathe In. Reviews were generally strong, and included 4 star reviews from publications including Record Collector, Q, Uncut, the Daily Mirror and The Independent. The Zombies: 'Odessey & Oracle' - Classic Album Review

21:01
A great, but often overlooked, album by The Zombies. The wonderfully mispelt 'Odessey & Oracle'
Rod Argent And Colin Blunstone Of The Zombies Discuss Their Book, "Odessey" And Their Classic Album,

25:11
“Odessey” is an eclectic collection of rare and unseen photos, original artwork and personal memories that offers readers an intimate snapshot of one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. The lavishly illustrated book includes handwritten lyrics for 22 songs. Each selection is accompanied by a running oral history by original band members Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Chris White, and Hugh Grundy. The Zombies also have their final full-album performances of "Odessey and Oracle" this year. "Odessey and Oracle" produced the group’s biggest hit (“Time of the Season”), and became a musical touchstone for generations to come. Join The Zombies when they take the BUILD stage to talk about the album, book and perform a few songs. Interview at 692 Broadway in NYC for BUILD Series.

The Zombies - I Love You Full Album

29:59
This is the somewhat rare album "I Love You' by The Zombies. It is also sometimes self titled "The Zombies". I couldn't find this album on Youtube as whole, so I decided to upload it. It is also somewhat difficult to find good versions of all the songs on here. I recorded this directly from my Record Store Day 2014 vinyl copy of it. It has been cut up, normalized, and put back together. Track Listing: 1) The Way I Feel Inside 2) How We Were Before 3) Is This The Dream 4) Whenever You're Ready 5) Woman 6) You Make Me Feel Good 7) Gotta Get A Hold Of Myself 8) Indication 9) Don't Go Away 10) I Love You 11) Leave Me Be 12) She's Not There
