#BOHNAFIDE // EP. 5: HOW TO PICK HARDWOOD FLOORING

18:04
We’re back with another episode of #BOHNAFIDE and this time I’m picking out my hardwood floors! This episode is extra exciting because we are at the Divine Flooring (https://www.divinefloor.com/) Showroom here in Vancouver, BC. and they just re-opened after their recent renovation done by yours truly!! I’m so excited for you to see this amazing project we just completed but to also have you help me pick the flooring for our townhouse! Even though we did design this showroom, I have to say after actually using it to shop for my own flooring, it truly is the best flooring showroom I’ve been to (and I’ve been to many!), so if you’re in Vancouver and looking for flooring options, you MUST stop by! I hope you enjoy this episode of #BOHNAFIDE!!! How To Install a Herringbone Wood Floor

To add a bit of class to our entry way, I laid down some herringbone flooring! Come see how I did it! They are also cut to various lengths so that your final floor pattern is random and not purposefully repeated. Herringbone floors are meant to be laid in a pattern so the irregular pieces of flooring have to be modified. After doing the rough math of our entryway's square footage, I figured out that I would need over 200 pieces of flooring cut to the same length. I opened some remaining boxes of flooring and used my miter saw to cut the giant pile of pieces. Because of the nature of herringbone floors and the construction of tongue and groove flooring, I wasn't don't modifying these pieces yet. Normally, when you lay tongue and groove flooring, the tongue fits inside of the groove the whole length of the piece as well the sides. In our case I had to cut each piece the same length resulting in only groove remaining one side. Because the pieces would be paid out in 90-degree butt joints, I had to add a groove to the other side. Think of it like this, one piece of flooring would lead with a tongue and another piece would butt up against the front corner. This had to be a groove or the straight cut from the miter saw would lock the pieces into place. Conversely, behind that 90-degree segment would be the original long grooves. In order to get another row of flooring to join up with those, I had to cut splines that would fit into both grooves. So yes, I had more repetitive cutting to do. To match the aesthetic of the rest of the floor, I had to add a small micro-bevel to the freshly cut end. I did this by setting up a chamfering bit in my router table and carefully passing each end over the tiny exposed cutter. With all of the flooring cut and all of the splines ready, I had to start laying the pattern. I cut a simple plywood template to help me get the initial row of 90-degree segments and got to work. I used my flooring nailer to secure the pieces in place and got to work. This process took a while longer than laying the traditional flooring because there were so many small pieces. I also had to keep checking the squareness of my work so that the 90-degree would be consistent throughout. I covered a majority of the floor with the herringbone flooring but as I approached the door ways, I had to fill in the small gaps with some custom cut pieces. It was really coming together and I was surprised by how nice it looked. When I set out on the project, I wasn't quite sure how I would tie this new floor pattern into the rest of traditional flooring. After looking at the entryway itself, I could see the it had pretty clearly defined boundaries. There is a French door leading to the living room and a door way leading to the adjoining room. My wife and I decided that it would look best to just add a border around the herringbone flooring to match the confines of the room. This way, I could match the rest of the flooring seamlessly and give the entryway some definition. To add this two-board thick border, I had to cut off the pointy bits of herringbone that stuck out on the sides. This solution seemed pretty straight-forward until I had to actually cut the pieces. I would have to use the circular saw for this extremely crucial cut; a tool that is notoriously sloppy. If my cut wasn't straight the boards wouldn't fit, if was too wide, there would be an ugly gap. I scribed my line very carefully and used my rip track to cut a perfect line in the floor. Success! I laid in the border pieces and had to cut off the lower lip of the grooves in some cases to get them to fit. Because tongue and groove requires you build the floor upon itself successively, I couldn't just drop a piece down into an existing space. So by cutting off the lower lip I could anchor the tongue in place and sit the upper lip of the groove on the next tongue. Of course this wasn't that secure, so I used some nails to hold those key pieces down to the subfloor.

How to install hardwood flooring (Nail down) // Home Renovation

05:48
Anyone can install nail down hardwood flooring and it looks AWESOME! Subscribe to my channel: http://bit.ly/1k8msFr Second Channel: http://bit.ly/iltms-2 Last time on my home renovation series, we laid down some floating hardwood floor in our bonus room conversion. It's a great product but a bit too expensive to carry throughout the entire house. For the rest of the home, we decided to nail down hardwood floor so that we could spend the money on a harder, nicer looking wood. Nailing down flooring is something that ANYONE can do and it not only makes the rooms look nicer, but also adds value to the home over all! The first step is to clean up the subfloor, getting it free of all debris including staples. Then add a layer of underlayment as a moisture barrier. When laying the actual floor, the first few rows will need to be nailed down by hand. After you get far enough from the walls, you can use a pneumatic nailer to make the process go MUCH faster! This entire room took me about a day an a half to complete. Traditional Korean floor 대청마루 ( daecheongmaru) PART II a wooden floor without nails, screws or glue

15:19
In this video we finish our traditional wooden floor without nails by adding the floorboards themselves to the joists we prepared in the last video. This floor is our own version of a korean 우물마루 (umulmaru) technique. Our technique differs from classical korean in the use of japanese joinery and a sliding dovetail to hold the boards. There are many ways one could accomplish this style of flooring, we chose a method we found to be the best for us, to carve a simple dovetail rebate into each joist then carefully match the ends of the floorboards to this angle. The dovetail prevents any cupping or movement of the boards but allows expansion and contraction and any size board to be used. Other methods used in Korean floors are a simple tongue at the end of each board and a groove carved into the joists to receive it. To get the boards into the groove, a larger slot is cut out on one end of each joist, letting the boards drop down and slide forward. As the final "capping board" is not restrained by the dovetail rebate as all other boards are, its important that it is a very tightly fit quarter sawn board, as a quarter sawn board should remain the most stable and resist the temptation to cup over time. A few important points on this floor to remember; 1. all boards are placed bark side up (outside of tree facing up) as is the custom in many asian traditions 2. Either green boards or air dried are best, not kiln dried, as a kiln dried boards may swell exponentially in subsequent humid summers and could actually rupture the buildings frame. If kiln dried wood is used it would be wise to plan for and accomodate any excessive expansion with extra covered space on one end of the rows, or the most simple solution, to utilize "galloping joists" which sit atop the carrying beams instead of flush with them. Our floor is semi dry, boards being milled and air drying 6 months. As they continue to dry they can be tightened up. 3. Capping boards should be either single large quarter sawn boards, or made up of several slimmer quarter sawn peices joined together. .............................................……………………………………………………………………. It can prevent drafts coming up from beneath the floor and it can help to make a floor look much more neat and tidy. Some people prefer to keep the gaps, they believe that filling the floor will make it look fake like laminate or lino. Each to their own, personally, I say fill it every time. http://www.howtosandafloor.com

How to Clean Hardwood Floors (Household Cleaning Ideas That Save Time & Money) Clean My Space

In this video, cleaning expert, Melissa Maker, discusses different types of hardwood flooring and share my favorite method for cleaning hardwood floors with all of y'all. I also demonstrate mopping techniques for effective floor mopping. Cleaning hardwood floors is really important if you want them to last you a lifetime and look great! Thanks for watching! Richard asked: How do I clean and maintain my hardwood floors? There are many different types of hardwood floors: 1) Polyurethane coating makes the floors look clean and shiny 2) Hardwood finished wood has a waxy or oily coating which repels water or liquid 3) Unfinished hardwood CANNOT be mopped since it will damage the floors To test if you can mop your floors, drop a few drops of water in a discreet area and if it beads, you have a floor coating. Answer: What you need- 1) Hardwood floors 2) Vinegar 3) Dishwashing liquid 4) Wringer bucket 5) Microfiber twist mop 6) Microfiber cloth 7) Rubbing alcohol 8) Warm water Put half a pinky nail's worth of dishwashing liquid into a wringer bucket. Dishwashing liquid is a neutral cleaner and will help to remove dirt well without leaving a residue. Add a cap full of vinegar and fill with hot water. Vinegar is a mild disinfectant and will help to cut grease without leaving streaks. Soak the mop head in the bucket for a few minutes to soften. The mop has to be almost dry before mopping hardwood floor. When you mop, clean in an S-shaped pattern. This ensures you get all areas of the floor cleaned. Keep your bucket around you and try not to step into areas you've already cleaned. To be extra diligent, you can take a microfiber cloth and do a quick wipe down so no water is left behind. Best practices are to sweep and vacuum once or twice a week and mop once every one or two weeks.

How to Install Wood Look Tile

10:07
We have been working on Wood Look Tile Installation. If you follow us on Instagram (which you totally should😀! http://www.DIYTyler.com/instagram.html ) you will have already seen the finished product and some of the in work shots! We are in the process of putting an addition on our house and I have taken over the completion at this point and first up was to install wood grain look tile flooring in the new mudroom, laundry room and bathroom. Check out all the other Addition videos!: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsk0VxaVqgZEG4H3IPW4rh0j3P_Z5b4OL #tilefloor #woodlooktile #DITRA ➤We wanted the best and longest lasting solution we could and all my research pointed towards using a product called DITRA. It is an uncoupling, waterproof membrane that can be installed directly over OSB, laminate or plywood with no need for concrete backer board. Started the install process by making sure there were no bumps or lips on the sub flooring using a belt sander with 40 grit sanding belt. Then mixed up 50lbs (at a time) of Schluter All-Set and spread it using a 3/16" v groove trowel and laid the DITRA over it. You can proceed with tiling right over the DITRA immediately if you want, I first laid all the DITRA and them came back over the next few days and laid the tile. Laid the tile using a 1/3rds pattern making all the cuts on my RIDGID tile saw. You can probably use a scribe and break tool but you won't be able to take sliver cuts if you need to. Laid the tile over All-Set spread using a 1/4x1/4 trowel and leveled them using the RIDGID level max system which was amazing. OF NOTE: Usually you would have to lay the DITRA using a modified morter and the tile using an unmodified morter but the All-Set is specially formulated by Schluter to work for both applications. Shout out to Schluter for sending us the DITRA and All-Set for use on this project. We wanted the best for our new addition and they came through for us! Check out their offerings: https://www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/ Big thanks to RIDGID for sponsoring our channel check out their latest power tool promotions! https://www.ridgid.com/powertools/promotions/ ➤Some tools I used (affiliate): IsoTunes Xtra: https://amzn.to/2NBu7zw RIDGID Level Max System: https://thd.co/2zznN2u RIDGID Tile Tools: https://thd.co/2ABFQoi Schluter Underlayment: https://amzn.to/2Rl61a1 Schluter All-Set: https://amzn.to/2Q2jNBL RIDGID Cordless Belt Sander: https://amzn.to/2Q86YG3 EDC Belt Carry: http://goo.gl/XZnWRx RevMarkers: https://goo.gl/UJZfnq

Where to start installing your wood flooring | Tutorial by Pergo

04:26
A step-by-step guide on where to start installing your wooden flooring. To install your floor, you’ll need a cutting knife, bevel tool, a folding meter, calculator, a handsaw or jigsaw, a pencil, spacers, a hammer, a tapping block and a flat crowbar. A good start is the path to a perfect finish. Make sure your flooring installation goes as smoothly as possible, which will save you time and materials. Installing your wooden flooring is simple, but before you begin, make sure you’re well-prepared. After that, just follow these simple steps. We’ll demonstrate installation from left to right, but you can also work in the other direction. Start by measuring the room. This way, you avoid waste and having to work with lots of small, narrow pieces when finishing up. Small pieces will not only make the floor less attractive but also less stable. Measure the width of the room and divide it by the width of the planks to find out how many rows of whole planks you’ll need. Divide the remaining measurement between two planks, which you will lay at the edge of each side of the room. Open up several boxes and check your planks for damage. If you find a floorboard that is cracked or damaged like this one, don’t throw it away. You can still use part of it as the first plank of a new row. Don’t start directly against the wall. Most walls aren’t perfectly straight so you risk ending up with a less than perfect installation. Make a mark on the wall at both ends of the room where you will place your first row. This will give you a reference point for where the whole planks should start and end. Follow this guide to make your floor straight. Start with a whole plank from the point you’ve marked on the wall. Put spacers between your plank and the wall. This will give the floor room to expand and contract with changes in humidity. Measure the space that’s left between this plank and the wall and saw the next plank to size. Don’t fit this plank yet, but use the left-over piece to start your second row. Make sure this piece is at least 30 cm long. Fit another full plank to the second row. Go back to finish your first row with the piece you’ve already sawed to size. Finish the second row and move on to row 3. After fitting three rows, go back and lay the split plank placed at the edge closest to the wall. To mark the saw line so that it follows the angle or curve of the wall, place the plank you want to saw on top of the first whole plank you laid. Put a pen on one side of the piece and place the other end against the wall. Drag it along the wall as you draw a line on the plank you want to saw. Pro-tip: Take a small, left-over piece of plank. Saw off the tongue just to the edge. Saw off part of the groove until you have exactly 10 mm left. Click it into place. Do this at an angle of 20 – 30 degrees. Press the short side down. Slide them together horizontally. You can use a tapping block if needed. Knock it firmly into place using a flat crowbar. Don’t forget to add spacers. When this is done, you can start working directly from the floor. Pro-tip: Use the piece sawn off the last plank in the previous row on the next row. Keep at least 30 cm between the short ends in different rows. Remember. Always keep a 8 to 10 mm gap between your floor and the wall. Use spacers. In places where it is tough to lay planks with the tapping block, you can tap them together with the crowbar and a hammer. Need more tips? Take a look at the other Pergo tutorials.
