Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Training Video -- Safety Data Sheets (SDS) - Top Ten Things to know. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) - 29CFR1910.120 - requires chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers to provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDSs) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products. Safety Data Sheets can be easily downloaded via the Internet. Search for them under the name of the product or the product type. Although all SDSs are now required to be standardized and showing information under 16 different sections, there are ten things you should immediately look for to familiarize yourself with the chemicals in the product you are using, no matter where you are using them. This video highlights the ten things you should know right away before using any chemical product in the workplace, but it goes double for home safety. Even simple household products can contain potentially hazardous chemicals. Use the Safety Data Sheets to find information necessary to protect yourself, your co-workers and your family. Always follow all label warnings, cautions and instructions. We regularly post new videos on workplace and household safety. Subscribe to our channel to receive notifications when a new video is produced. All of our videos are based on the latest research, best practices and more than four decades of experience in safety and loss control. Share these videos with your co-workers and family members. Safety is often overlooked in today's fast-paced environment, so reminders and tips in our videos are proven to help recognize hazards and avoid painful, costly, and even fatal, accidents. Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for Hazardous Chemicals

05:03
In 2012, the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)) was revised to require that chemical manufacturers, distributors or importers provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs or Material Safety Data Sheets) to communicate the hazards of hazardous chemical products. The standard requires that as of June 2015, Safety Data Sheets be presented in a consistent user-friendly, 16-section format. To provide guidance to help workers who handle hazardous chemicals to become familiar with the format and understand the various sections, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) provides the following descriptions: • Section 1: Identification - Identification includes product identifier; manufacturer or distributor name, address, phone number; emergency phone number; recommended use; restrictions on use. • Section 2: Hazard(s) Identification - Hazard(s) identification includes all hazards regarding the chemical; required label elements. • Section 3: Composition/Information on Ingredients - Composition/information on ingredients includes information on chemical ingredients; trade secret claims. • Section 4: First-Aid Measures - First-aid measures includes important symptoms/effects, acute, delayed; required treatment. • Section 5: Fire-Fighting Measures - Fire-fighting measures lists suitable extinguishing techniques, equipment; chemical hazards from fire. • Section 6: Accidental Release Measures - Accidental release measures lists emergency procedures; protective equipment; proper methods of containment and cleanup. • Section 7: Handling and Storage - Handling and storage lists precautions for safe handling and storage, including incompatibilities. • Section 8: Exposure Controls/Personal Protection - Exposure controls/personal protection lists OSHA’s Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs); ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs); and any other exposure limit used or recommended by the chemical manufacturer, importer, or employer preparing the SDS where available as well as appropriate engineering controls; personal protective equipment (PPE). • Section 9: Physical and Chemical Properties - Physical and chemical properties lists the chemical's characteristics. • Section 10: Stability and Reactivity - Stability and reactivity lists chemical stability and possibility of hazardous reactions. • Section 11: Toxicology Information - Toxicological information includes routes of exposure; related symptoms, acute and chronic effects; numerical measures of toxicity. • Section 12: Ecological Information • Section 13: Disposal Considerations • Section 14: Transport Information • Section 15: Regulatory Information • Section 16: Other Information - Other information includes the date of preparation or last revision. Employers must ensure that SDSs are readily accessible to employees for all hazardous chemicals in their workplace. These are just a few things to know about Safety Data Sheets, to learn more about this or industrial hygiene and environmental testing and consulting services for many of the chemicals that are required to have Safety Data Sheets, please visit the websites shown below. Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) - Laboratory Safety Training Program http://safety.1800inet.com/product.php/name/material_safety_data_sheets_in_the_laboratory_video/products_id/3865 All hazardous materials entering a laboratory must have a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS. However, the information in an MSDS can be hard to read and understand without training or education. To understand and to use of this information properly, laboratory employees must be trained to read an MSDS. They need to understand how the data is organized and what the data means. Material Safety Data Sheets in the Laboratory is a training program that covers the various sections of the MSDS, what information can be found in each section and importantly, how this information can help employees work safely in the laboratory. Material safety data sheet

12:47
A material safety data sheet (MSDS), safety data sheet (SDS), or product safety data sheet (PSDS) is an important component of product stewardship and occupational safety and health. It is intended to provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for handling or working with that substance in a safe manner, and includes information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill-handling procedures. MSDS formats can vary from source to source within a country depending on national requirements. SDSs are a widely used system for cataloging information on chemicals, chemical compounds, and chemical mixtures. SDS information may include instructions for the safe use and potential hazards associated with a particular material or product. These data sheets can be found anywhere where chemicals are being used. This video is targeted to blind users. COSHH assessments should only be done with the MSDS to hand. The first stage will ask for product information such as type of product, person at risk and name of supplier. Once all information is entered, the next stage will ask you for the PPE required to use the product, which will be found in the MSDS. The third stage will require you to copy the first aid measures from section 4 of the MSDS. The fourth stage will require you to copy the fire prevention measures from section 5 of the MSDS. The next stage will require to copy all applicable spillage, handling, storage and disposal procedures from the safety data sheet. Stage 6 will ask for any CLP symbols, amount of product you’ll use, and how long you’ll use it for. The next section will ask for the workplace exposure limits. Simply type in the CAS number found in the MSDS of any chemical listed under the WEL section. If nothing is listed here, leave this section blank. The eighth section will ask for hazard statements. Only input those found in section 2, and not those found at the end of the MSDS. The final stage will ask for any other precautions. This could be symptoms of exposure, engineering controls, PPE for overexposure or conditions to avoid. If you want to, add a comment to the end of the COSHH assessment, and a risk level, and then click finish. I hope you found this video helpful. If you would like a full demonstration give us a call and keep watching for a look at the next section of our online health and safety management system.

HAZWOPER: Safety Data Sheets - V0002189EW

07:01
Hazardous materials and waste are a part of many work situations, and can be found in many types of facilities and job sites. It is very important for employees to know how to recognize these potentially dangerous substances, and how to handle and dispose of them properly. In 1976, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the handling of hazardous waste "from cradle to grave". Since then, other regulations have followed... including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Interim Final Rule for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response ("HAZWOPER")... which in 1986 gave OSHA the task of protecting HAZMAT workers. But every chemical has different hazards. It is important that employees know how to protect themselves from these hazards, as well as what they should do in an emergency involving a chemical that they are working with. The answers to these and other important questions about hazardous chemicals can be found on the chemicals' Safety Data Sheets (SDS). The SDS is basically a guide for the safe use of a hazardous chemical. It provides information about handling, storing, transporting and working with the chemical safely. So it is important that employees know how the SDS is organized and where they can find important information on it. MARCOM's training products on "HAZWOPER: Safety Data Sheets" educate employees about the Safety Data Sheets format and reviews how the information in an SDS can help them work safely with potentially hazardous chemicals. Topics covered in these products include: * The importance of Safety Data Sheets when working with hazardous chemicals. * The SDS's role in the Hazard Communication Standard. * The advantages of the new SDS format. * The four basic questions the SDS is designed to answer: # What is the material and what are its hazards? # What should I do if a problem occurs? # What precautions should I take when working with this material? * A review of the sections in the SDS.

Chemical Hazards: Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Training Video -- OSHA HazCom Standard

16:23
Globally Harmonized System (GHS) Training Video -- GHS Intro & Changes to OSHA HazCom Standard You may show this video on Youtube to students, employees and co-workers in order to provide them with the required introduction to the GHS and to train them on the changes that are being made to the HazCom Standard. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) is now aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The GHS is a system for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labelling of chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to: ◾Defining health, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals; ◾Creating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and ◾Communicating hazard information, as well as protective measures, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). The GHS covers all hazardous chemicals. There are no complete exemptions from the scope of the GHS for a particular type of chemical or product. The term "chemical" is used broadly to include substances, products, mixtures, preparations, or any other terms that may be used by existing systems. The goal of the GHS is to identify the intrinsic hazards of chemical substances and mixtures and to convey hazard information about these hazards. The GHS is not intended to harmonize risk assessment procedures or risk management decisions, as described above. GHS Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals

03:21
What is the Globally Harmonized System (GHS)? GHS stands for the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. GHS defines and classifies the hazards of chemical products, and communicates health and safety information on labels and safety data sheets). The goal is that the same set of rules for classifying hazards, and the same format and content for labels and safety data sheets (SDS) will be adopted and used around the world. An international team of hazard communication experts developed GHS. Why is global harmonization necessary? Currently many different countries have different systems for classification and labelling of chemical products. In addition, several different systems can exist even within the same country. This situation has been expensive for governments to regulate and enforce, costly for companies who have to comply with many different systems, and confusing for workers who need to understand the hazards of a chemical in order to work safely. GHS promises to deliver several distinct benefits. Among them are: Promoting regulatory efficiency. Facilitating trade. Easing compliance. Reducing costs. Providing improved, consistent hazard information. Encouraging the safe transport, handling and use of chemicals. Promoting better emergency response to chemical incidents. Reducing the need for animal testing. What is the scope of GHS? GHS covers all hazardous chemicals and may be adopted to cover chemicals in the workplace, transport, consumer products, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. The target audiences for GHS include workers, transport workers, emergency responders and consumers. What are the two major elements in GHS? The two major elements of GHS are: 1. Classification of the hazards of chemicals according to the GHS rules: GHS provides guidance on classifying pure chemicals and mixtures according to its criteria or rules. 2. Communication of the hazards and precautionary information using Safety Data Sheets and labels: Labels - With the GHS, certain information will appear on the label. For example, the chemical identity may be required. Standardized hazard statements, signal words and symbols will appear on the label according to the classification of that chemical or mixture. Precautionary statements may also be required, if adopted by your regulatory authority. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) - The GHS SDS has 16 sections in a set order, and minimum information is prescribed. What are some key terms in the GHS Vocabulary? SDS – Safety Data Sheet. SDS is the term used by GHS for Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Hazard group – While not given a formal definition, GHS divides hazards into three major groups – health, physical and environmental. Class – Class is the term used to describe the different types of hazards. For example, Gases under Pressure is an example of a class in the physical hazards group. Category – Category is the name used to describe the sub-sections of classes. For example, Self-Reactive Chemicals have 7 categories. Each category has rules or criteria to determine what chemicals are assigned to that category. Categories are assigned numbers (or letters) with category 1 (or A) being the most hazardous. Hazard Statement – For each category of a class, a standardized statement is used to describe the hazard. For example, the hazard statement for chemicals which meet the criteria for the class Self-heating substances and mixtures, Category 1 is Self-heating; may catch fire. This hazard statement would appear both on the label and on the SDS. Precautionary Statement – These statements are standardized phrases that describe the recommended steps to be taken to minimize or prevent adverse effects from exposure to or resulting from improper handling or storage of a hazardous product. Signal word – There are two signal words used by the GHS – Danger and Warning. These signal words are used to communicate the level of hazard on both the label and the SDS. The appropriate signal word to use is set out by the classification system. For example, the signal word for Self-heating substances and mixtures, Category 1 is Danger while Warning is used for the less serious Category 2. There are categories where no signal word is used. Pictogram – Pictogram refers to the GHS symbol on the label and SDS. Not all categories have a symbol associated with them. What is meant by the GHS hazard groupings and building block concept? There are three major hazard groups: Physical hazards. Health hazards. Environmental hazards. Within each of these hazard groups there are classes and categories. Each of these parts is called a building block. Each country can determine which building blocks of the GHS it will use in their different sectors (workplace, transportation, consumers). Once the building blocks are chosen, the corresponding GHS rules for classification and labels must be used.

113 - a - Ok to use lighter fluid on the membrane?

01:25
Ok to use lighter fluid on the membrane? . . . 1:03 Start 06/18/16 Spoke to the guy at Ace Hardware - No reaction, so it's probably ok: The lighter fluid didn't have any visual effect on the Membrane. If it made the surface cloudy, or if it made the material gummy, that would indicate a chemical reaction. . . . What's going on when this happens, is that you're pulling oil out of the rubber. In this case, just wiping it on and off should have no effect. It evaporates. If you were rubbing it down with lighter fluid on a daily basis for some reason, then, you might start deteriorating the Membrane. Or, if you were to make a container out of SBR, it's not recommended that you use it to store lighter fluid. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Other interesting examples of chemical reactivity I've learned of: You want to remove the label from a Rubbermaid container for flour or sugar. I used Ronsonol lighter fluid to remove the label residue. The surface became cloudy, which indicates a chemical reaction. A better way to remove it: 1.) Use Goo Gone, which is a different, solvent formulation (see MSDS, orange scented, kerosene / paint thinner) . . . Naphtha vs. Kerosene - Understanding Solvents: Part II . . . http://news.thefinishingstore.com/?p=375 2.) Use a hair dryer on the label residue, to loosen it up. Then you can wipe it off. 3.) Soak the container in hot water for a while, to loosen it up. Then you can wipe it off. Rubber washers that they sell at the hardware store are not rated for use in gasoline applications. If you were in a pinch, you can use them, but only temporarily. Chloramines in tap water leach out carbon black over time from rubber washers, and deteriorate them, but this is not so with EPDM-P . . .
