Bipolar Disorder, Suicidal Thoughts & Depression. His Story.
Bipolar disorder, suicidal thoughts & depression. His story starts at just 16 years old, when Ross Szabo was diagnosed with bipolar disorder which escalated to depression, suicidal thoughts, anger control problems and psychotic features. At just 17, he was hospitalized for attempting to take his own life. He has found a way to not just survive, but thrive and has gone on to speak to over a million people on a mission to normalize mental health disorders. If you want to do healing work like Ross, join a life-changing, 6-week online course for $49. Starts July 16, 2015 and will be the most fun and transformational soul work you've ever done. Release shame, stigma, secrets and live your authentic, fullest life! Sign up here: http://www.kirstytv.com/ Ross talks about what was going on in his life during his teens when things were at their worst for him. He explains how he felt it was easier to use alcohol as a numbing agent than wait for medication to ease his depression. As he began to drink, his bipolar symptoms changed. As oppose to mania and depression, he began to have massive bouts of anger. It wasn't until he began to have hallucinations that people began to get scared and respond. "The hallucinations are not something you forget. When it first starts happening to you, you're in this state of paranoia because you don't know what's real." Ross explains the details of hallucinations and how he was able to rationalize and understand what was happening to him. After entering a deep state of depression, he struggled with taking his own life for 4 months. Eventually, he attempted suicide and was hospitalized. He was seeing a therapist every 2 weeks for those 4 months and never once mentioned his suicidal thoughts to them. He didn't want to die, he just didn't see a way out of his bipolar disorder. Ross is so brave to explain his feelings and rationalizations of that time. He wishes that he would've, "Had the understanding that it took more strength to talk about it than to hide it." The turning point came at age 21, when his parents admitted to him that they didn't think he would live to be 21 years old. He had never seen his parents cry like that. A while later, after drinking excessively, he laid unconscious for 21 hours. When he woke, he looked at himself in the mirror and told himself that he was either going to die or have to change. That was 5 years after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. "No one ever asked me, 'How does it feel to have bipolar disorder?'" "I think the reason mental health disorders and self hatred are so closely tied to each other is because they fuel each other." I ask him what he needed to hear during that crucial period. Ross shares, "I think I need to explore further how I did feel about having these emotions as oppose to just having them. I think I needed to be asked, 'How does it feel to hallucinate and what does it feel like to have all these people laugh at you. And to have these situations in your life that you can't control?'" According to Ross, the best part of his life now is being able to be in the moment and enjoy emotions for what they are instead of being afraid. If you're out there and you're dealing with mental health issues like suicidal thoughts and/or depression and you're somewhere on that spectrum wether it's dealing with anxiety, a major trauma or it's escalating into something more like the bipolar disorder, I hope that you do some of the things we discussed to experience your life potential. Bipolar UK: Bipolar in young black men
In the UK individuals from black and minority ethnic groups are more likely to: · be diagnosed with mental health problems · be diagnosed and admitted to hospital · experience a poor outcome from treatment · disengage from mainstream health services, leading to a sense of disenfranchisement and deterioration in their mental health Acknowledging this, Bipolar UK have approached Genesis Elijah, following the release of his track, ‘Man Down’, which touches on mental health from a black experience. We sought his honest views on a number of issues. In this candid video feature, ‘Mice in the presence of the lion’, he gave his perspective, straight up no chaser, but also suggests ways to enable possible solutions to be built upon. A central theme Genesis Elijah mentions is the need for more communication, which is an integral part of the help we provide via our underfunded peer support services. What is Bipolar Disorder? And Do I have it?
Bipolar disorder is a condition that was previously know as manic depression. Basically someone that has bipolar disorder will have extreme mood phases which can either be depression or Mania. Depression Depression could include overwhelming feelings of worthlessness and these could in turn lead to suicidal thoughts or feelings that things would be better if you didn’t exist. (Depression itself has a number of symptoms which I’ll list in a separate article). Mania You could also experience phases of mania which can be the complete opposite to the depressive phases. The thoughts you might experience can include overwhelming optimism, a feeling of increased energy and ideas, that you feel will resolve any current difficulties you face. This can result in a person making ambitious and even irrational plans based on these feelings and even spend money or make life changing decisions in a way that you wouldn’t normally do. Other symptoms of the manic phase can be; Not sleeping well, or feeling like sleeping Loss of appetite or forgetting to eat Speaking very quickly Having racing thoughts Becoming irritated and easily annoyed Some people may even have episodes of psychosis. This is where people can see or hear things that are not really there or even become convinced of something that is untrue. Mood Swings? Whilst these two phases can echo mood swings, they are more extreme and can interfere with normal everyday life. They also can last much longer than a “normal” mood, so you can feel either phase for several weeks or even months. The causes of this disorder are unclear. But stress, genetics and life changing events all seem to contribute to this. It is my understanding that it can take several years to diagnose this condition. When I started researching bipolar, a lot of the things I found seemed to be true in my own experiences. So It wouldn’t surprise me if I have this, however everyone seems to be different and in some ways it is not always helpful to put big labels on people and behaviour. I am currently waiting to see a psychiatrist to hopefully discuss and see if they can help me with my depression and one of the things they can diagnose is bipolar disorder among other mood disorders. I know treatments can include stabilising medication, talking therapy and trying changes to lifestyle If any of the above sounds familiar, then please seek professional help, see if you GP can refer you to a physiatrist. Above all remain strong, there are many people who live with bipolar disorder and it is possible to lead a fulfilling life. I hope this has been helpful in answering any questions you have about Bipolar. See below for my video talking in more detail about bipolar disorder. Never Give Up @man depression.

MoodRhythm is an app to help people with bipolar disorder learn about their personal rhythms and stay in balance. Bipolar Disorder is a common and lifelong illness, affecting men and women equally regardless of background. It is associated with poor functional and clinical outcomes, high suicide rates, and huge societal costs. One of the most prominent features of bipolar disorder is its rhythmicity. An person's mood can fluctuate from the most intoxicating highs to depressed lows. MoodRhythm is an iphone app, an Android app and a clinical dashboard. Once a patient downloads the app to their device, they can immediately start tracking their routine. MoodRhythm allows patients to track the basic 5 activities used in the paper diary but also to add custom activities. Patients can decide with their clinicians to set target times for each activity. Immediate visual feedback encourages self-report as patients record the time they completed an activity at, as well as their mood and energy levels. Notes can be used to record additional information such as the amount of medication taken or factors that may have affected a patient's routine or mood. In designing MoodRhythm, we have taken into consideration how it will be used not only in a patient's daily life, but over longer periods of time and when a patient is particularly symptomatic. At these times, self-report can be difficult to maintain. Mood Rhythm uses the phone's onboard sensors to automatically track sleep and social activity patterns. We also considered how MoodRhythm could complement and extend clinicians' existing ways of working. MoodRhythm's web dashboard supports clinical decisions and helps accelerate patients' personal learning. Clinicians can gain a richer picture of a patient's routine and daily sleep and wake environment in order to inform medication decision-making and guide the patient toward personal insights. Mood Rhythm helps patients become more aware of their daily patterns and adhere to their therapeutic goals by: Making self reporting fun and effortless Creating more reliable clinical information Creating a rich picture of how and why a patient's mood fluctuates with their routine. Using smartphone sensors to reduce the need for self-report measures. MoodRhythm supports patients on the go, Helping them track their routine both actively and passively throughout their day and over their lifetime. Use Mood Rhythm to Stay in Balance and Learn about your personal rhythms.

Bipolar vs Borderline Personality Disorder – How to tell the difference
Bipolar disorder vs borderline personality disorder. They are very similar but very different. This video is based on a viewer question. There is a big difference between personality disorders and the psychiatric illnesses like depression anxiety bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The personality measure hardwiring whereas these illnesses are like your state at the time. Another analogy would be comparing your personality to the climate of a region and a disorder like depression would be the weather that you are having at the moment. Using our diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders 5th edition, borderline personality disorder is defined by the following: A pattern of unstable relationships, self-image, and emotional expression, and marked impulsivity, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following: 1. Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment an example of this is the person may seem to read into things too easily. Things that you say are interpreted to mean that you're done with them or that your abandoning them in some way. 2. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation. In this kind of relationship, the person with borderline personality disorder may at one point think you’re the best thing ever. You can do nothing wrong. Then the next moment or next day you're the worst thing ever. The exact opposite. 3. Identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self. This kind of identity disturbances at a deep level it's not being confused about whether you're meant to be a teacher versus an astronaut. this is a confusion about core identity issues like your gender or your sexuality or even your spirituality. Now I tiptoe around us because I don't want you to walk away thinking that someone who wants to change their gender has borderline personality disorder in fact an important thing to remember with this is that this diagnosis is based on a grouping of symptoms of the things that I listen you need five of them so it's not that anyone who is angry is borderline. Or anyone's ever cut is borderline. It's about having multiple things that fall into this category and having that be present a problem for you in many ways. Because you're not happy with yourself as well as you have conflicts with others. 4. Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging some examples of this could be reckless spending, reckless sexuality, drug abuse, or binge eating. 5. Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-mutilating behavior This would be things like cutting yourself or taking overdoses of pills even though you really don’t want to die, you’re just responding to internal distress 6. Unstable, reactive mood. This would be things like episodic low mood, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days. This is one of the key differences between borderline and bipolar. 7. Chronic feelings of emptiness. This is one of the reasons people with borderline personality cut themselves. It’s a coping mechanism to help them feel real. Some people cut to relieve tension. 8. Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger. This can look like temper tantrums, constant anger or physical fights. 9. Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms. Clinicians sometimes call these micropsychotic episodes. They are not full blow psychosis, but they are close. If you don’t know what psychosis is, here is another video that defines it: https://youtu.be/3bg5TL7AwgU Disclaimer: All of the information on this channel is for educational purposes and not intended to be specific/personal medical advice from me to you. "Up/Down" Bipolar Disorder Documentary FULL MOVIE (2011)
SHORTER (and better) VERSION: https://youtu.be/TTgSydgvmCY Click the link above for a more condensed version of "Up/Down." http://www.facebook.com/updownmovie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1821695/ There are approximately 5.7 million people in the United States with bipolar disorder. In an attempt to eliminate the mystery and misinformation surrounding the illness, many throughout the country diagnosed with this condition were interviewed extensively. They diligently explain the struggle to balance themselves between floating to a state of euphoria and sinking to a devastating depression. In short, "Up/Down" is a personal analysis of bipolar disorder from those living with it. Looking for something with a more scientific or clinical angle? Try a textbook. "Bipolar disorder is just one of many mental illnesses that is still highly stigmatized in our culture today, and 'Up/Down' could certainly be instrumental in changing that fact." -Microfilmmaker Magazine, Issue 65 If you would like to purchase a copy of the film and support independent filmmakers (because not all of us operate on trust funds), here are the following methods: https://www.createspace.com/340597 http://www.amazon.com/Up-Down/dp/B006GTYUEQ http://cn.youreeeka.com/main/watch/942 Star Award, 2011 Indie Gathering Merit Award, 2011 Accolade Competition Art Exhibition Award, 2011 Love Unlimited Film Festival Nominated for Best Feature Documentary, 2011 Los Angeles Reel Film Festival Thank you for taking the time to watch the film! #StrongerThanStigma - Michael Angelakos: My Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis
Bring Change 2 Mind, in partnership with Brandon Marshall’s Project 375, launched #StrongerThanStigma to raise awareness around the unique challenges that men face when discussing mental health, to encourage open dialogue, and to promote help seeking behavior. #StrongerThanStigma features four inspirational male figures from professional sports leagues, television, and the music industry who have made mental health advocacy a part of their platform. These headliners are Brandon Marshall, NFL All-Pro wide receiver for the New York Jets; Ben Scrivens, NHL goalie for the Montreal Canadiens; Michael Angelakos, lead singer of indietronica band Passion Pit; and Wayne Brady, comedian and actor. Each shares his story, and encourages men to start the conversation and end the stigma. Michael Angelakos is a singer-songwriter, composer, record producer and the front man of the indietronica band Passion Pit. In the summer of 2012, after Passion Pit’s second studio album, Gossamer, debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 chart, Michael posted on the band’s website that they would be cancelling their upcoming tour dates so that he could continue to work on his mental health. After years of hospitalizations and medications, Michael had publicly acknowledged that he lives with Bipolar Disorder. The support that Michael received in response to his honesty and transparency inspired him to use his publicity to humanize the concept of mental illness and to advocate that it is treated as any other health concern. Michael is currently working on Passion Pit’s third album, which is to be released in 2015. For more information, please visit www.BringChange2Mind.org. 5 Signs of Bipolar Stigma in a Relationship | HealthyPlace
Bipolar stigma in relationships is something we really need to pay attention to. Living with bipolar disorder makes us vulnerable to people using our mental illness as a platform for emotional abuse. In this week’s video, I’m sharing my personal experience with bipolar stigma in a relationship; how the person I was dating kept gaslighting me and made me question my own sanity. It made me feel extremely depressed, insecure and unlovable. So here are the 5 signs of bipolar stigma in a relationship and I go into more detail about those in the video. 1. When your bipolar disorder is constantly used as a platform for blame 2. Your partner makes little effort to learn about bipolar disorder and bipolar stigma 3. The language used when discussing mental illness (you’re crazy) 4. If you constantly feel insecure, that you’re annoying – Is someone making you feel that way? 5. If you are constantly questioning your sanity because of your partner What are the signs of bipolar stigma in relationships that you have experience with? Please share your comments below or do a response video and send it into [email protected] See you next week!
