Secrets of Underground London - Original Narration
This Documentary has been uploaded for educational purposes. No copyright infringement is intended. Original programme description: On the surface, London is a buzzing metropolis. But underneath lies secret, hidden worlds, all but forgotten by the millions of people above. These places make up the countless layers of London, and each tells a unique story of the city’s past - successes and failures; victories and tragedies. When the Romans founded settlements along the River Thames during the 1st century AD, they laid down the very first layer of one of the world’s greatest cities. Long buried pieces of the original Roman town still survive to this day – statues, walls, even an entire amphitheatre, where fierce gladiators once fought…and died for glory. London has seen more than its fair share of death over the centuries. The terrible Plague of the 14th century killed more than half of the population in just two years; and the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666 left vast swathes of the city’s timber framed buildings in ashes. These tragic events are forever carved into London’s subterranean landscape – gruesome plague pits filled with thousands of corpses, and eerie mines excavated for the materials to rebuild the city. But the Victorians were the true masters of the underground; from the creation of the first tunnel under a river to the foundation of one of the world’s most iconic public transport systems. While 19th century engineers believed no goal was out of reach, it often meant that the highest price was paid for by workers - many men tragically lost their lives building the wonders of the industrial age. During the German bombing campaign of London during WWII the underground played a role of life or death. Many railway or ‘Tube’ stations were transformed into huge air raid shelters, and top secret bunkers enabled Churchill’s government to fight the war from within the city. The Prime Minister even had a private underground restroom…hidden inside? A direct hotline to the White House! The Underground has always been the perfect place to store precious items; from the deep tunnel storage of priceless works of art during the war, to impenetrable vaults packed with silver. But the British Library stores a truly astonishing collection of nearly 1.5 million items, from modern novels to priceless historical documents, all available at the exact time a visitor wants it, whether they're coming from Notting Hill or Nantucket. In a city as densely packed as this, sometimes the only way for a building to develop is to build down – and that's exactly what the British Museum is doing. Surrounded by 300 year old buildings and containing the wonders of human civilization, any construction work here is a perilous operation. But four new subterranean levels will breathe a new lease of life into this 260 year old institution, paving the way for the next generation. Discover amazing hidden worlds of the past, present and future in Secrets of Underground London.

Inside The Abandoned Part Of London's Charing Cross Underground Station
Business Insider was given a tour of the abandoned part of London's Charing Cross Underground station. The station - which provides the Northen and Bakerloo line - once served the Jubilee line, but the platform was closed in 1999 after an extension was built that completely bypassed the station. The platforms are now used for various forms of training by different organisations - including the fire brigade and the police - and public tours from the museum. Hollywood movies are also filmed in the station, providing scenes for the Bourne Ultimatum and Skyfall. We were also given access to the station's service tunnel and ventilation shaft. The Secret Station - Aldwych
My Final Year University Project - A Trip Down Aldwych. The London Underground has undergone many changes since its conception; lines and stations close to be replaced by newer, more efficient ones. But what actually becomes of these closed down stations? Do any still exist now? If so, what would it be like to visit one...? This video takes you on a visual journey through Aldwych, a disused station on a now defunct branch of the Piccadilly Line. I produced this as part of my 'TV Production' course at Bournemouth University. It was awarded a first. Bunkers are mostly underground, compared to blockhouses which are mostly above ground. They were used extensively in World War I, World War II, and the Cold War for weapons facilities, command and control centers, and storage facilities (for example, in the event of nuclear war). Bunkers can also be used as protection from tornadoes. Trench bunkers are small concrete structures, partly dug into the ground. Many artillery installations, especially for coastal artillery, have historically been protected by extensive bunker systems. Typical industrial bunkers include mining sites, food storage areas, dumps for materials, data storage, and sometimes living quarters. When a house is purpose-built with a bunker, the normal location is a reinforced below-ground bathroom with fibre-reinforced plastic shells. Bunkers deflect the blast wave from nearby explosions to prevent ear and internal injuries to people sheltering in the bunker. Nuclear bunkers must also cope with the underpressure that lasts for several seconds after the shock wave passes, and block radiation. A bunker's door must be at least as strong as the walls. In bunkers inhabited for prolonged periods, large amounts of ventilation or air conditioning must be provided. Bunkers can be destroyed with powerful explosives and bunker-busting warheads.

Britain's Illegal Rave Renaissance: LOCKED OFF
Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged. Clive Martin investigates this 21st century version of Rave, where young people break into disused spaces with the help of bolt-cutters and complicated squatting laws, to suck on balloons and go hard into the early morning. But with the police using increasingly extreme tactics to clamp down on these parties, and more than one fatality causing nationwide media panic, can the scene survive? Buckingham Palace FACTS | London | Secret Tunnels | Queen of England
Subscribe for a new videos every week! ►► https://goo.gl/8Ve9bg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Buckingham Palace is the residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a focal point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and mourning. Originally known as Buckingham House, the building at the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site that had been in private ownership for at least 150 years. The last major structural additions were made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the East front, which contains the well-known balcony on which the royal family traditionally congregates to greet crowds. It was acquired by King George III in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte and became known as "The Queen's House". During the 19th century it was enlarged, principally by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, who constructed three wings around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace became the London residence of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This video is purely for educational purposes only. Secret Hidden Tunnel Exploration Shanklin Isle of Wight (Derelict places UK) Secret Underground Cave
Derelict places uk: Abandoned tunnel exploration Isle of Wight, secret tunnel hidden in the woods on the outskirts of Shanklin. Date of Visit: 18-05-2016 The tunnel is surprisingly long at the end of the bricked section it leads into a cave opening. The cave section goes on for approx 30m and then unfortunately comes to a dead end. Its thought to be a borehole built by the Victorians. Just beneath this tunnel is another (unfortunately still sealed) which I have been told leads to a large underground well. There are pipes within this tunnel which look as though they feed through to the other tunnel below. I haven't edited down the footage to give a representation of just how long this is. The footage of the cave section is not particularly good, it was extremely difficult to film in this section and there was significant waterfall.. The tunnel had been sealed for quite sometime however fortunately I was tipped off that someone has very kindly ground the lock off. This is not likely to stay open for long, please be aware it is very wet and muddy inside with several hidden pits. ****UPDATE 24-05-16**** This has now been re-sealed :( I would not advise taking any gear in that is not weather sealed, you WILL get it wet and muddy, and mind out for the bats ;) Gear used: Sony a7s full frame mirrorless camera system. Lens used: Sony 16mm E mount with Fisheye adaptor. Gimbal shots shot with the Nebula 4000 Lite. Last shot made with Panasonic GH4 (as its weather sealed) Edited in Adobe Premier Pro CC 2015 Graded with VisionColor OSIRIS M31 Lut Music Created (by me) with FL Studio 9 using Absynth 5 plugins. Get more Tips here! http://www.destinationtips.com Have you ever imagined a life without the sun? How could we possibly survive? Today we'll show you how with the most impressive underground cities! 1. GROWING UNDERGROUND, LONDON: In this city located in an old war bunker in London, they managed to sustain a whole farm. This seems almost impossible, however they did it by using a hydroponic, vertical, pesticide-free system. Also, they use the space much more efficiently, saving 70% of the water used on it. 2. EARTHSCRAPER, MEXICO CITY: As you had already imagined, this is the complete opposite building to a skyscrapers, as it goes down towards the Earth core. 65 stories to be precise. It has a pyramid-shaped design and an open central space where daylight can flood in to the depths of the earth. 3. THE LOWLINE, NEW YORK: The Lowline is a project based on the success of "the Highline", an abandoned elevated railway converted into a lush public space. The aim is to give an unused trolley terminal a makeover. It's expected to be opened by 2020. The natural light would be directed below ground using a system called "remote skylights" based on parabolic reflectors and optic fiber cables. 4. RÉSO, MONTREAL: (ray-zo mon-tree-all) This is the largest subterranean complex in the world and has been in use since the 1960s. It's a way of hiding from the terrible cold temperatures they suffer. We can find multi-level shopping centers, hotels, restaurants and metro stations. All linked by tunnels. 5. UNDERGROUND CITY, HELSINKI: This underground city includes more than 125 miles of tunnels filled with everything you would expect in an overground city, and the best thing is that they have plans to continue to expand the subterranean public spaces. 6. SUBTROPOLIS, KANSAS CITY: This city occupies 1,100 acres of abandoned limestone mines since 1964. More than 1,600 people work in this naturally climate-controlled, rock-carved space every day. We can find subTropolis houses and everything from cave-aged cheese to car storage space, and an array of small businesses. Also it naturally maintains temperatures between 18 and 21 °C all year-round. 7. UNDERGROUND SCIENCE CITY, SINGAPORE: In Singapore they've had a space problem for a long time. So they designed this Underground Science City for up to 4,200 scientists, researchers, and professionals in Research and Development facilities. But also, there are many restaurants and shopping malls. 9) Burlington, U.K. This is a city built by the British Government in 1955 in case of a nuclear attack. A 35-acre network of hidden entrances, streets, canteens, and purpose-built rooms to house the Prime Minister, the entire British government and the Royal Family. It even had a telephone switchboard and a hospital inside. However it's been closed off since 1991. 10) Derinkuyu, Turkey This is an ancient multi-level underground city extending to a depth of approximately 60 metres. It is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food stores. This city could be closed from the inside with huge stone doors and had ventilation and running water. Are you ready to live underground? Comment below!
