Secrets of Underground London - Original Narration
This Documentary has been uploaded for educational purposes. No copyright infringement is intended. Original programme description: On the surface, London is a buzzing metropolis. But underneath lies secret, hidden worlds, all but forgotten by the millions of people above. These places make up the countless layers of London, and each tells a unique story of the city’s past - successes and failures; victories and tragedies. When the Romans founded settlements along the River Thames during the 1st century AD, they laid down the very first layer of one of the world’s greatest cities. Long buried pieces of the original Roman town still survive to this day – statues, walls, even an entire amphitheatre, where fierce gladiators once fought…and died for glory. London has seen more than its fair share of death over the centuries. The terrible Plague of the 14th century killed more than half of the population in just two years; and the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666 left vast swathes of the city’s timber framed buildings in ashes. These tragic events are forever carved into London’s subterranean landscape – gruesome plague pits filled with thousands of corpses, and eerie mines excavated for the materials to rebuild the city. But the Victorians were the true masters of the underground; from the creation of the first tunnel under a river to the foundation of one of the world’s most iconic public transport systems. While 19th century engineers believed no goal was out of reach, it often meant that the highest price was paid for by workers - many men tragically lost their lives building the wonders of the industrial age. During the German bombing campaign of London during WWII the underground played a role of life or death. Many railway or ‘Tube’ stations were transformed into huge air raid shelters, and top secret bunkers enabled Churchill’s government to fight the war from within the city. The Prime Minister even had a private underground restroom…hidden inside? A direct hotline to the White House! The Underground has always been the perfect place to store precious items; from the deep tunnel storage of priceless works of art during the war, to impenetrable vaults packed with silver. But the British Library stores a truly astonishing collection of nearly 1.5 million items, from modern novels to priceless historical documents, all available at the exact time a visitor wants it, whether they're coming from Notting Hill or Nantucket. In a city as densely packed as this, sometimes the only way for a building to develop is to build down – and that's exactly what the British Museum is doing. Surrounded by 300 year old buildings and containing the wonders of human civilization, any construction work here is a perilous operation. But four new subterranean levels will breathe a new lease of life into this 260 year old institution, paving the way for the next generation. Discover amazing hidden worlds of the past, present and future in Secrets of Underground London.

The Secret Station - Aldwych
My Final Year University Project - A Trip Down Aldwych. The London Underground has undergone many changes since its conception; lines and stations close to be replaced by newer, more efficient ones. But what actually becomes of these closed down stations? Do any still exist now? If so, what would it be like to visit one...? This video takes you on a visual journey through Aldwych, a disused station on a now defunct branch of the Piccadilly Line. I produced this as part of my 'TV Production' course at Bournemouth University. It was awarded a first. Secrets Of The Glasgow Subway
Another episode of 'Secrets...' this time, we went up to Scotland, to ride on the brilliant Glasgow Subway system with its fifteen stops to see what things we could spot that you might not have known about or missed. And having done all this, it should all change in the next couple of years in 2020, when brand new driverless trains come onto the system, and the whole subway is upgraded again! Read about that here: http://www.spt.co.uk/subway/modernisation/ Note: This video not paid for or sponsored by SPT, but they did kindly give me filming permission - many thanks! Thanks also to Kirsty, for her excellent local local knowledge without which it wouldn't have been possible.

Bunkers are mostly underground, compared to blockhouses which are mostly above ground. They were used extensively in World War I, World War II, and the Cold War for weapons facilities, command and control centers, and storage facilities (for example, in the event of nuclear war). Bunkers can also be used as protection from tornadoes. Trench bunkers are small concrete structures, partly dug into the ground. Many artillery installations, especially for coastal artillery, have historically been protected by extensive bunker systems. Typical industrial bunkers include mining sites, food storage areas, dumps for materials, data storage, and sometimes living quarters. When a house is purpose-built with a bunker, the normal location is a reinforced below-ground bathroom with fibre-reinforced plastic shells. Bunkers deflect the blast wave from nearby explosions to prevent ear and internal injuries to people sheltering in the bunker. Nuclear bunkers must also cope with the underpressure that lasts for several seconds after the shock wave passes, and block radiation. A bunker's door must be at least as strong as the walls. In bunkers inhabited for prolonged periods, large amounts of ventilation or air conditioning must be provided. Bunkers can be destroyed with powerful explosives and bunker-busting warheads.

Secret Hidden Tunnel Exploration Shanklin Isle of Wight (Derelict places UK) Secret Underground Cave
Derelict places uk: Abandoned tunnel exploration Isle of Wight, secret tunnel hidden in the woods on the outskirts of Shanklin. Date of Visit: 18-05-2016 The tunnel is surprisingly long at the end of the bricked section it leads into a cave opening. The cave section goes on for approx 30m and then unfortunately comes to a dead end. Its thought to be a borehole built by the Victorians. Just beneath this tunnel is another (unfortunately still sealed) which I have been told leads to a large underground well. There are pipes within this tunnel which look as though they feed through to the other tunnel below. I haven't edited down the footage to give a representation of just how long this is. The footage of the cave section is not particularly good, it was extremely difficult to film in this section and there was significant waterfall.. The tunnel had been sealed for quite sometime however fortunately I was tipped off that someone has very kindly ground the lock off. This is not likely to stay open for long, please be aware it is very wet and muddy inside with several hidden pits. ****UPDATE 24-05-16**** This has now been re-sealed :( I would not advise taking any gear in that is not weather sealed, you WILL get it wet and muddy, and mind out for the bats ;) Gear used: Sony a7s full frame mirrorless camera system. Lens used: Sony 16mm E mount with Fisheye adaptor. Gimbal shots shot with the Nebula 4000 Lite. Last shot made with Panasonic GH4 (as its weather sealed) Edited in Adobe Premier Pro CC 2015 Graded with VisionColor OSIRIS M31 Lut Music Created (by me) with FL Studio 9 using Absynth 5 plugins. Forgotten secret wartime Tube station opened - BBC News
Beneath Clapham South Tube station lie a warren of tunnels which provided shelter for 8,000 people during World War Two. After the war, the dormitories in south London became temporary accommodation for immigrants from countries like Jamaica who were invited to live in the UK. The tunnels, which are 120ft below the surface, have now been opened up for public visits by Transport for London (TfL) and the London Transport Museum. BBC London's Alice Bhandhukravi reports. We took a ride on London's hidden underground mail rail line - here's what it's like
London's "Mail Rail" is set to open again after being closed for 14 years. The underground system, previously hidden from the public, was used to transport post across the city for 76 years. The line was 6.5 miles long and ran between Whitechapel and Paddington. It was suspended in 2003 due to high running costs. From September 2017, members of the public can take a ride on part of the line. In July 2016, Business Insider UK featured a video showing laser scans of the underground tunnels before they were re-opened. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI UK on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1Nz3jG3 Follow BI UK On Facebook: http://bit.ly/1VWDkiy Read more: http://uk.businessinsider.com/?IR=C -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider UK is the largest business news site for British readers and viewers in the UK. Buckingham Palace FACTS | London | Secret Tunnels | Queen of England
Subscribe for a new videos every week! ►► https://goo.gl/8Ve9bg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Buckingham Palace is the residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a focal point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and mourning. Originally known as Buckingham House, the building at the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 on a site that had been in private ownership for at least 150 years. The last major structural additions were made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the East front, which contains the well-known balcony on which the royal family traditionally congregates to greet crowds. It was acquired by King George III in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte and became known as "The Queen's House". During the 19th century it was enlarged, principally by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, who constructed three wings around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace became the London residence of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This video is purely for educational purposes only. Pear Tree House - Secret Nuclear Bunker in London SE19
Built between 1963 and 1966, Pear Tree House was to be the HQ of Civil Defence Region 53a. However, it almost immediately became obsolete. However, Emergency Planning soon noticed an empty bunker, and it was converted for their use until the end of the Cold War tensions. For much more information, visit http://www.subbrit.org.uk/rsg/sites/p/pear_tree_house/ This was filmed during an organised Subterranea Britannica visit in 2001, and I believe that visits are no longer possible.

World of Mysteries - Hidden City of London
Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare... London, Europe’s biggest and busiest metropolis, visited by 28 million tourists every year. They come for history, culture, and entertainment, but behind the glamour of the bright lights lies a concealed sinister city that most travellers don’t get to see. This is the Hidden City of London. London is a city rich in history, but you won’t see it all from a double decker bus. In this programme we explore a secret subterranean world. We hunt for ghosts of centuries past, and unravel the most famous English mystery of all, Jack the Ripper. In 1888, Jack the Ripper was the most feared name in London. The Ripper preyed upon prostitutes of the East End, in just ten weeks he savagely murdered five women, but to this day his true identity remains a mystery. In Victorian England the East End of London was a gloomy network of narrow cobbled streets shrouded in thick smog, life here was hard. Each year on November 5th hundreds of bonfires burn across the city as millions celebrate Guy Fawkes Night. Guy Fawkes was a seventeenth century terrorist captured trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament with two tonnes of gunpowder. Fawkes was imprisoned in one of the most brutal and terrifying places of all, the Tower of London. The West End is the Broadway of Europe. This is theatre land with over 40 playhouses in a single square mile. The Theatre Royal at Drury Lane is hundreds of years old, and seats 2500 theatre goers, both living, and dead. Mark Fox has been at the theatre since 1992, he claims to know of at least three ghosts that haunt the building, and he has a possible explanation for one of them. In search of London’s darker mysteries we sail up the River Thames to one of the most glorious palaces in England. Hampton Court represents 500 years of royal history, and with it, countless hauntings. Westminster, in the heart of London is Britain’s political hub and home to matters of vital national security, but these buildings were not built to withstand the impact of the Blitz of World War II. Instead Winston Churchill’s war cabinet held their meets at a top secret location below ground. Now a museum, the Churchill War Rooms have been left exactly as they were when they were abandoned in 1945. “Hidden City of London”, is a documentary, from the “World of Mysteries” series.
