My second essay tips video. Conducting a comprehensive literature review is an important part of any research project. Here are my tips for how to use Google Scholar effectively to quickly and easily find the academic papers, journal articles or books you need to write that essay or complete that dissertation. This is the second in a series of videos I'm hoping to produce while undertaking my PhD at the University of Exeter on tips for students at university or college whether undergraduate, postgraduate or otherwise. If you've enjoyed this video then please do check out the rest of my channel. I generally put out new videos every Tuesday and Friday discussing theatre and playwriting from the perspective of an aspirant and (some might say) emerging playwright, theatre maker and academic. How Open-Access Journals Are Transforming Science

19:00
Academic publishers are locking up the latest research behind paywalls and hurting science, says Michael Eisen. We spoke with the co-founder of the Public Library of Science about democratizing scientific progress. Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/reasontv Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Reason.Magazine/ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/reason Subscribe to our podcast at iTunes: https://goo.gl/az3a7a Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines. ---------------- Michael Eisen's goal is to change the way scientific findings are disseminated. Most research papers today are locked behind paywalls, and access can cost hundreds of dollars per article. The general public, and most scientists, don't have comprehensive access to the most up-to-date research, even though much of it is funded by U.S. taxpayers. "It's a completely ridiculous system," says Eisen, an acclaimed biologist at UC Berkeley, an independent candidate for Senate in California running against Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D), and a co-founder of the Public Library of Science, or PLOS, which publishes some of the largest and most prestigious academic journals in the world. These publications stand out for another reason: They're open access, meaning that anyone with an internet connection can read them for free. PLOS seeks to break up the academic publishing cartel, and it's a leading force in the so-called open science movement, which aims to give the public access to cutting-edge research and democratize scientific progress. This movement became widely publicized after famed hacker and Reddit co-founder Aaron Swartz sought to upend the publishing system by uploading millions of articles for free; he was prosecuted relentlessly, and ultimately committed suicide in 2013. Eisen first thought he could simply convince his fellow scientists to start uploading their work, but that didn't work because universities and funding agencies use journals as a proxy for quality. They base tenure and award decisions in large part on how many articles a researcher publishes, and on the reputations of the publishers. To encourage a switch in researchers' thinking, PLOS's first journal, PLOS Biology, attempted to emulate what Eisen describes as the "snooty" journals such as Science and Nature, which generate prestige in part by rejecting most submitted papers. PLOS Biology became well regarded and provided a proof of concept for PLOS's model, in which funding agencies or universities pay a flat fee up front (typically $1,500, but adjusted based on ability to pay) that's then made accessible for free. The multidisciplinary journal PLOS ONE, created in 2006, used this same model to become the largest academic publication in the world, though it's been surpassed by other open access sources. PLOS ONE puts papers through a fairly typical peer review process, but it doesn't ask editors to determine a paper's importance; the journal will publish any study that follows sound science and reports its data. According to Eisen, this model encourages more thorough experiments, rather than flashy results that aren't reproducible, and allows readers to determine whether a particular study is important and valid. Reason spoke with Eisen at the BioHack the Planet Conference in Oakland, a gathering for DIY scientists known as biohackers who eschew traditional research institutions. They often carry out experiments in garage labs and share their raw findings on the internet in real time, a publishing model to which Eisen believes all scientists should aspire. Eisen also discussed why scientists and universities continue to prop up the academic publishing monopoly, how scientific progress suffers from the current regime, why he's running for senate as an independent, why he beleives political parties are obsolete, and the way forward for the open science movement. Divorce Lawyer: Online Dating Relationship

01:05
For more information on divorce law, visit www.DivorceLawSource.com. Transcription: Online dating does not automatically rise to an intimate relationship. A New York Family Court ruled that an online relationship did not constitute an "intimate relationship" as reported in a July 18th, 2012 article in the New York Law Journal. After a party petitioned the Court seeking an order of protection the court found that the present case law establishes a high standard for what constitutes an "intimate relationship." The Court further stated that although an online flirtation could lead to an intimate relationship, the current relationship had not. From the evidence provided the parties did talk and flirt for approximately six weeks. However, the conversations midway started to discuss a business arrangement. Additionally, the parties never went on a date or met for a social reason. Due to these circumstances, the Court ruled that they lacked subject matter jurisdiction and could not allow an order of protection to be granted. Thank you.

How to cite a journal article found online in APA format.. Simple method

04:04
APA format for a journal article found online Author, A.A.. (Publication Year). Article title. Periodical Title, Volume(Issue), pp.-pp. doi:XX.XXXXX or Retrieved from journal URL Notes: When creating your online journal article citation, keep in mind: APA does NOT require you to include the date of access/retrieval date or database information for electronic sources. You can use the URL of the journal homepage if there is no DOI assigned and the reference was retrieved online. Example: Retrieved from http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1467-8535;jsessionid=956132F3DE76EEB120577E99EE74CE9C.f04t01 A DOI (digital object identifier) is an assigned number that helps link content to it’s location on the Internet. It is therefore important, if one is provided, to use it when creating a citation. All DOI numbers begin with a 10 and are separated by a slash. about APA style : APA (American Psychological Association) style is most frequently used within the social sciences, in order to cite various sources. How to find full-text of articles using Journal Finder at HPULibraries

03:16
Transcript: Hi this is Amy Chadwell and this is how to find the full-text of articles using the tool, Journal Finder. When you're looking in any of the library databases, you are often going to come upon articles that do not have the whole article right there. This is what we and the database are going to call the "Full Text" of the article. When the article does have full text, it will sometimes be in PDF format, and sometimes in plain text. When you don't see the full text anywhere, this doesn't mean that the article is unavailable, it just means you have a few more steps to go through to find it. The first thing you'll do when you don't see the full text, is to look for the words Journal Finder on the page. Depending on what database you're in, these maybe in different places Journal Finder is a tool that takes all of our subscription information for the thousands of full-text journals we have access to, and links you to the correct database to find full text versions. In EBSCO databases, the Journal Finder Search Link is going to be on the left side where the full text link normally would have been. Clicking on that is going to search for that journal title in all of our many holdings, and let you know if we have online or print access. For this one, it looks like we do have some online access to the title Now, you need to compare your dates to see if we actually have access to this particular article. You can see the date of the article here in parentheses, and then compare that date to the begin and end dates to the various sources for this journal. If you see one that includes your date, click on the Journal's title. Now based on the provider and the journal this screen may look quite different from this video is showing. Usually what I will do, is search the journal for the title of the article. If your dates worked, you should now be able to see the full text of the article. Sometimes you may not find your article's full text through Journal Finder- if you don't see the right dates for your article, or if you don't see any access at all, you will need to consider putting in an interlibrary loan request for your article. If you have any questions about using Journal Finder, finding full-text or putting in an interlibrary Loan request, please ask us!

Online - Database - Academic Search Complete

04:32
Watch this 4.5 minute video for an introduction to searching with Academic Search Complete database available to you though NOVA's Library. This video is captioned in an effort to meet ADA Section 508 compliance for web accessibility. In addition, the transcript is below. The Academic Search Complete database covers many disciplines and has access to magazines, journals, and newspapers—many in full-text, which is why so many students start here. Click on the Articles tab on the library’s homepage and you’ll find it listed under “Recommended Databases for Most Topics.” Keep in mind if you’re off-campus, you will be prompted to login with your myNOVA username and password to get to the search screen. There are many approaches to searching and this is only one. In this search, I want to keep it basic and search using keywords in the multiple fields available. Let’s start with a broad topic and narrow it down as we go. Start by typing your keyword in the first search box. You can see that the database auto-populates suggestions for you, but I’m going to ignore those and see where my search leads me. Often you discover the best information during your search. Because we’re using keywords, I will leave the “Select a Field” drop-down as is. Click “Search.” The search has over 187,000 results. Look at the left side of the screen at the section called “Refine Results.” There are 3 steps I take at the beginning of a search to help me focus in on the information that will work best for me. (1) Check off “Full-text.” When you limit results to full-text, it ensures your results include only the articles that are complete and accessible, as opposed to only an abstract or a summary. (2) Depending on the course and assignment, your professor may want you to only use scholarly or peer-reviewed articles. These articles are published in scholarly journals and have to go through an extensive peer-review process by experts in the field. Because this will exclude newspaper and popular magazine articles, I’m not checking this box. (3) To find current articles, I will limit the publication date to 5 years. You can see that with each refinement to the search, the number of results goes down, but the number is still too high to browse articles. Now it’s up to you and your critical thinking skills to determine how to refine your search using more keywords. I’d like to see how depression affects “college students;” I type this phrase in quotation marks because when you do this, you’re telling the search engine to only bring back pages that include the exact phrase, and click “search.” I want to narrow this even further and add “veterans” as a keyword. I now have only 9 results. It is possible to narrow your topic too much, but I see an article that interests me, so let’s click on it. The detailed record page has areas that I want to point out to you. You can see the source of the article, year, and page numbers Browse the subject terms for ideas and inspiration to change up your search. Read the abstract before clicking on the HTML or PDF full-text to make sure the article is what you’re looking for. Click on the HTML or PDF full-text. If you prefer to read the article in a language other than English, you can have it translated. If it helps you to listen and read along with the text, you can listen to the article and read along as the text highlights and you can even select the accent. If you decide this article is for you, look to the right side of the screen at the Tools. Here you can print, email, or save the article to a flashdrive. As long as you’re a NOVA student, you can “add to folder” which stores an unlimited number of articles for you from semester to semester. And finally, you can generate the article citation. Remember to use the citation style your professor requests, usually APA or MLA. For more videos and tutorials on various topics, check out NOVA Libraries YouTube channel. If you need more help, contact your campus librarian by clicking the email link in the Ask a Librarian box on the library’s homepage.

Justin's HIV Journal: HIV and Online Hook Ups

06:01
A while ago Justin B Smith from Justin's HIV Journal wrote an article about Hooking up online. He didn't actually put a video to this article. After further discussion with people that left him comments about the article, he felt it needed to be done. People whether they are gay, straight, black, white, latino, or asian hook up online all the time. But do we ever thinking about what or who we are hooking up with. If you neg and the other person is poz would you hook up? What the difference if your hooking up with someone who is poz or neg as long as a condom is being used? Absolutely nothing !!!

APA Format in Word - in 4 Minutes

RECOMMEND USING UPDATED "APA Format in Word - in 4 Minutes V2" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZVIa2sTbpM Format basic APA documents in Word in 4 minutes. Really. This is a visual approach to writing APA in Word. At the end you'll find the steps used, which you can copy or screen print. Created for my college students, but shared in the hope that it helps others. If you have an earlier version of Word, just look for the same keywords, such as "different first page". Other how-to APA topics, such as citations and references, will appear in subsequent videos.
