Walter Isaacson on Steve Jobs' Favorite Product: The Apple Team

03:43
If you're interested in licensing this or any other Big Think clip for commercial or private use, contact our licensing partner Executive Interviews: https://www.executiveinterviews.biz/contact-us/americas/ Walter Isaacson discusses how Steve Jobs may have had a prickly personality, but his ability to build loyal and innovative teams was one of his greater talents. Isaacson is the author of The Innovators: How a Group of Inventors, Hackers, Geniuses and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution. Read more at BigThink.com: http://goo.gl/lujrxC Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: You know Steve Jobs was one of those romantic innovators who comes up with great ideas, has real passion, real vision and that prickly personality, that very pushy reality distorting personality that can get something done. However, in writing about Steve Jobs I realized something interesting. It wasn’t just his one vision. It was his ability to create a team around him, his ability to work in partnership with Steve Wozniak. You go down the list with dozens of people all the way to Tim Cook. And not only to work in partnership but to create a collaborative team around him of great designers like Jony Ive and software people like Phil Schiller and Johnny Rubinstein. And I once asked Steve Jobs, you know, what product are you the proudest of. And I thought he might say the iPod or the iPhone or the iPad, whatever, the Mac. And he said, you know, making a product is hard but making a team that can continually make products is even harder. The product I’m most proud of is Apple and the team I built at Apple. And that’s when I moved to this new book, The Innovators, because I wanted to say it’s not just about the visionary, it’s about the visionary being able to execute on the vision by finding the right people to be collaborative and creative with. So with Steve Jobs even though we think of him as being a tough boss or we think of him as having sort of a prickly personality, there were people who were so loyal to Steve they would walk through walls for him. He developed around him the tightest, most loyal, most integrated team in Silicon Valley. You know, Steve Jobs was very intuitive in the way he made decisions. He wasn’t somebody who deeply reflected or spent a whole lot of time hashing it through. But he would work with everybody from the hardware designers like Jony Ive to the software people and just sort of say no, that doesn’t feel right. Sometimes he used a little bit stronger language than that. Or it’s genius, it’s perfect, it’s awesome, it’s incredible. But, you know, don’t try this at home. People come up to me sometimes and say I’m like Steve Jobs - when somebody does something that stinks I tell them it stinks. Yeah and have you invented the iPod? Have you invented an iPhone? No, Steve Jobs didn’t just have a tough personality. He also had a charismatic visionary personality and he brought people in. And he really could inspire people because even though sometimes he couldn’t articulate exactly what he wanted he could sure point the way to getting it there. He also believed in physical space as necessary for collaboration. We think maybe we can collaborate in the digital age by doing it virtually from afar but when he built the Pixar building and when he designed what will be the new headquarters for Apple it was all about making sure people had serendipitous encounters. That they came through the atrium. That they walked through the perimeter where the light was in the new Apple headquarters. Where they would just bump into people and say what are you working on. And then naturally collaborate. But he felt that, you know, just by walking through Jony Ives design studio and touching a few things and talking to people he could collaborate by being in a physical space better than he could do it by Skype or email or, you know, Google hangouts. So Steve’s team building skills really sort of came from the force of his personality and being with him. Directed/Produced by Jonathan Fowler and Elizabeth Rodd

How to License Products with Stephen Key

59:12
If you have a product idea or an invention, the traditional route to follow is to jump into product development as an entrepreneur. But to do so successfully, you must have capital, time, and experience. Even then, there's a risk of failure. In this interview with Stephen Key, we will describe an alternate route. If you have a product idea, learn how to license products, so that you minimize risk, time, and leverage your skills. When you license products, you spend your time creating ideas, rather than selling or marketing. You'll get a passive income, and you get to do what you love! The best part is, it's a lot of fun. Stephen Key is an entrepreneur, inventor, and the founder of Invent Right. In this interview, Stephen Key will explain his ten steps to license products, and how anyone with "one simple idea" can follow in his footsteps. For the full transcript and show notes, or to learn more about how to get hired without a college degree, check out: http://www.collegealternative.net/license-products This episode will cover: -Who is Stephen Key? -The difference between licensing and starting a business -The dark side of entrepreneurship -Stephen Key's path to success, including the ups and downs of licensing -Why licensing isn't being taught in school -How to get a great idea for licensing -What makes a product great for licensing versus selling on its own -Which industries are most friendly toward licensing -Words of wisdom for anyone struggling to find success in life Whether you're looking for a career change in the trades or job ideas, this is a great interview to watch. Qualcomm Interview- interview experience, suggestions and tips

03:22
This is an interview of Saurabh Gupta, a student of Electronics and Communication in Delhi Technological University, who was placed at Qualcomm. In this video, he talks about the different rounds involved in the placement interview, and also shares some campus placement tips and suggestions. ABOUT THE COMPANY Qualcomm Incorporated is an American global semiconductor company that designs and markets wireless telecommunications products and services. The company headquarters are located in San Diego, California, United States. The company has 157 worldwide locations. The parent company is Qualcomm Incorporated (Qualcomm), which includes the Qualcomm Technology Licensing Division (QTL). Qualcomm's wholly owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), operates substantially all of Qualcomm's R&D activities, as well as its product and services businesses, including its semiconductor business, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.  Qualcomm has 5 offices in India, out of which 3 are technical and 2 are marketing based. The technical units are located in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai whereas the marketing units are in Delhi and Mumbai. Saurabh was offered a technical profile, that of an associate engineer at Bangalore. CAMPUS PLACEMENT PROCEDURE The campus placement procedure consists of 3 parts- A written test which is followed by a Placement interview which is both technical, and HR based. Written Test – The written test was divided into 3 sections – an aptitude test, a coding section and a technical section. The aptitude test was not very challenging, and candidates can prepare for it using aptitude books, such as those by Arun Sharma. The coding section included C and C++, for which candidates can use books by Yashwanth Khanelkar or Balaguruswamy for help. Technical Section- The questions were mainly from Analogue electronics, digital electronics and communication systems. In Analogue electronics, the questions were mainly about diodes, transistors and equations relating to them. One advice for aspirants would be to focus on learning the equations well and practicing questions related to them since the questions are objective. For Digital Electronics, candidates can focus on Boolean algebra. As for communications, questions relating to basic filters were also asked. Candidates must be sure of the concepts and apply formulas to the questions given. HR Round- Questions covered several personal areas such as the candidate’s family background, schooling, and why they wanted to join Qualcomm. Placement tips and suggestions here for aspirants would be to prepare for such questions beforehand using the resources available since they can be very helpful in the actual interview. PLACEMENT TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS 1) Be confident of your skills 2) Maintain a decent percentage, since the cut-off for Qualcomm was 70%. 3) Be thorough with your concepts and read them well. 4) Practice questions from other books, but first be clear with the concepts you’re studying. Africa Needs Jobs, Not Aid

05:11
If you're interested in licensing this or any other Big Think clip for commercial or private use, contact our licensing partner Executive Interviews: https://www.executiveinterviews.biz/contact-us/americas/ While small-scale aid and charities are doing important work in Africa, they are not able to provide the jobs that are necessary for long-term growth. Question: Which aid programs are doing the best work?Moyo:    I mean, I sit on a number of charities, on the board of a number of charities that are doing fantastic work in Africa.  And I'll come into details in a moment, but I think what's really important to stress here again is what these charities can and cannot do?  So, the charities that I sit on are able to go into these countries and actually provide bandage solutions intermediate solutions. They cannot provide jobs which is where it's really important for us to see much more involvement in the private sector and that's why I'm talking about this other form of aid.  And why it's hampered that opportunity.  Some of the charities that I think of doing some fantastic work are places like Room to Read, which has got a very targeted programs towards helping young people get to access to books.  Other charities, for example, I sit on the board of a charity called "Lundin for Africa" which is a very, very clearly defined mandate to try and support through lending projects in microfinance across the continent.  And the third charity that I worked for or I always...I'm a patron...for whom I'm a patron is called "Ark" Absolutely Return for Kids again, very targeted involvement providing anti-retrovirals to Africans...across the Africa, but again, very narrow and also no illusion that they are going to be providing a long-term sustainable growth to these countries.  So, there're some examples of some interesting programs. Question: What do you think of the Millennium Development Goals?Moyo:    Well, to the extent that we know, we're not going to achieve those goals, which is obvious 2015 is around the corner...you know, the architects of the Millennium Development Goals are themselves going around saying that you know, Africa is likely not to meet any of those goals.  So, I think those type of very sort of large, big scale large focus lofty goals tend to meet to be red herrings for the fundamental issues.  What I'm looking to see is much more active programs to implement the things that we know worked, the things that have made China, China and India, and South Africa and Botswana successful at creating jobs and reducing poverty.  That's what we need to focus our efforts on.  I think it's also important that we focus on spinning a more positive story about Africa.  Too many of the NGOs and celebrities and charities around are very focused on perpetuating a negative stereo type about the concept which cannot be helpful to raise the very young Africans that are coming up across the continent.  That's a no value to be negative and yet that's what we see across the continent.  So, I think, we just need to do more of what we know works and less of what we know does not work.  In fact there is no country on Earth today that has achieved economic development and reduced poverty by relaying on aid.  Not a single one, and yet we're pushing a product that we know doesn't work at the time when we know what does work and that's what the issue is here. Question: Is microfinance a better alternative?Moyo:    Absolutely, microfinance is one of the tools for development that I talked about in the book.  It's an amazing, amazing way of providing support to Africans and people all around the world to finance themselves and therefore be able to stand on their own two feet.  They can provide themselves an income, provide education and healthcare to their children.  There are numerous examples of this.  From Muhammad Yunus want to know about price from Grameen Bank and I just was on a discussion program with him not too long ago.  Even in this market, he's, you know, with all the challenges of the capital markets right now.  He's managed to raise $1 billion from the very small aid student, very small communities within Bangladesh.  It's a billion dollars in rural Bangladesh and you know, very, very little default rates and you know, tremendous success.  These are the type of programs that you'd becoming out of the multilateral institutions and they are not...we seen more of the same giving more money to African government.  Giving money to governments around the world whereas it seems to me we know what works and give us another example I talked about in the book.  It's an internet interface for...minimum of $25, you can lend to an entrepreneur anywhere around the world.  Again, helping to finance a job and again, lending is the operative word, gives opportunity for Africans on the ground, so actually meaningful change their lives.

Algorithms: Killing Jobs, Narrowing Our Personalities, says Douglas Rushkoff

05:25
If you're interested in licensing this or any other Big Think clip for commercial or private use, contact our licensing partner Executive Interviews: https://www.executiveinterviews.biz/contact-us/americas/ The history of industrialization is the separation of workers from their labor, says media theorist Douglas Rushkoff. And it continues today in the digital marketplace where online companies seek to replace human labor with algorithms. Rushkoff's latest book is "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity" (http://goo.gl/a84N7i). Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/douglas-rushkoff-on-algorithms-and-labor Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - What people have to remember is that the object of industrialism wasn't to make more stuff better and faster, it was to disconnect labor from the value they created. So if I have a shoe factory, I don't want to hire expensive shoemakers and cobblers in my business, I want to go to the Home Depot parking lot, find a bunch of undocumented aliens and pay them two cents an hour. So I'm going to teach them something that's going to take me 15 minutes to teach them how to nail one nail into the shoe and then pass it onto the next guy. The person who understands how this all works is actually my enemy. So you fast forward to today when we implement digital technologies we try to do them in ways that get rid of people. We don't want employees. If you need human beings, well then how are you going to scale up? It has to be able to be an algorithm. The easy way to think about it is most people's first interaction with a computer was probably a telephone answering system. And sure, I understand a company has a human receptionist that sitting there. She's got a salary. She's got benefits. She's got a health plan. Get rid of her; put in a computer so people who call your company are going to have to take a little bit more time to get through all those menus, you're going to save a lot of money and it makes you look kind of high tech. But while you save money everybody who calls the company now spends more time going through those menus. You've actually created more work rather than less. You've externalized the cost of your human receptionist onto everybody else. So then what do they do? Well now they all have to get computer operators because they have to externalize the cost to everybody else. So we all end up now spending more time and energy going through those menus than we did when we hired somebody, but because we're so biased against hiring, because a company's stock price will go up, if it can show that it's hired less people we end up perpetuating that system. So when we implement digital technologies, in order to get people out of the way, in order to get them out of the company we end up really killing the only expertise we have. If you're using algorithms and big data to figure out your next product line rather than designers, what's your competitive advantage? The other company is using that same data and probably hiring the same big data analytics company to figure out the future trend. So now you've been turned into a commodity. No, you've got to reverse in a digital age. What you want is the most qualified people you can find so that your business actually can differentiate itself from all of the other automated algorithmic nonsensical platforms out of there. Frank Rose on Apple Under Steve Jobs

02:33
If you're interested in licensing this or any other Big Think clip for commercial or private use, contact our licensing partner Executive Interviews: https://www.executiveinterviews.biz/contact-us/americas/ Jobs' rise to CEO was not a guarantee at the beginning. Question: What has Steve Jobs' impact been on Apple? Frank Rose: What happened was he had started—Jobs had started his own computer company—called NeXT. The hardware wasn't terribly successful, but the software was quite good, and Apple was in the position where it desperately needed software so they brought—Apple bought—Jobs's company and brought Jobs in as a sort of an adviser. Within a few months the CEO was fired and Jobs kind of stepped into the bridge and for a while acted as interim CEO, he reorganized the board, eventually, obviously, became the permanent CEO. But, along the way he radically reorganized the company. He put into practice many of the ideas that he had wanted to put into practice in the mid-80s, when he and Sculley were having their problems with one another. And within, literally, a period of months the company became profitable again and began to capture people's imaginations with an innovative and very compelling, very sexy, series of products; starting with revamped max and ultimately continuing into the iPod and then, most recently, the iPhone. And dramatically successful marketing: suddenly Apple became cool to have—it became the cool thing to have—and at the same time it also had the kind of manufacturing discipline and the disciple in terms of product lines that. It began to send a clear message and it began to execute really well on its plans and that's why it's been so successful.
