Oracle SQL Tutorial 22 - Why Primary Keys Shouldn't Change

07:14
In the last video I mentioned that with our database design it is important to make sure that nobody tries to update a user's username. What happens if they do? Nothing horrible, Oracle will just throw an error. That's not such a big deal, but if you are hoping to make some kind of application that allows someone to change their username, this is not the best set up. Why? If you look at the projects table, we have a foreign key that references the username. Let's assume for a moment that Oracle allows you to do anything with your data. That means that if a user updates their username, there will be projects created by users that don't exist. Or a user could change their name to the previous owner. To fix this problem, we would need something such as an ON UPDATE CASCADE command for our foreign key. That would mean that if the user updated their username, the columns that reference that username would also update to the new value. This exists in some database management systems, but this does not exist in Oracle at the time of this video. How do we get around this problem? I'm sure we could conjure up something to allow us to update the username, but the easiest solution is to reference the user_id instead of the username. That way, when the username is updated, nothing changes inside of the foreign key. As a general rule, primary keys should never change. Foreign keys CAN change, but they should not change because a primary key changed. So, if we did happen to use a username as a column, it would be frowned upon if the username had to change because the column it references changes. However, it would be acceptable to change the foreign key if we needed to point to a new entity in the users table. Even if a username is never intended to change, these complications bother a lot of people. You can mitigate these problems by only referencing surrogate keys in foreign keys. This has the downside though that when you retrieve the data, you are going to have to do more work to make the data readable. For example, we had a table that was called project_users. It is essentially a table that says what users are part of what projects. We could have the foreign keys reference the project's name and the user's username. Then when you could say SELECT * FROM project_users. The data would be completely readable without doing anything. If you switch to only referencing surrogate primary keys, you will have a bunch of random numbers that don't mean anything and will have to be joined with other tables…which is really super frustrating when later you have to join a thousand tables to read anything. Which side do you prefer? Pick a side. Choose wisely. PL/SQL: Mutating Triggers Part-2

08:41
In this tutorial, you'll learn... PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

DYNAMIC SQL WITH EXECUTE IMMEDIATE IN ORACLE PL/SQL WITH EXAMPLE

21:53
The audio and video now synced. Ever tried creating a table inside a PL SQL block, or a function or a procedure? If yes, then you would know that it would raise an error, as DDL statements are not allowed inside a PL/SQL Block. So the solution to such a case, where you want to generate tables, or sequences or want to execute any DDL statement on the fly, then use synamic sql. Dynamic SQL statment will allow you to create state statements on the fly and then you can execute them using the execute immediate statement. This video tutorial demonstrates on this topic of using synamic sql with execute immediate in a PL/SQL block.

Check Last Modified DateTime for An Object (Table,Stored Procedure,Trigger etc.) in SQL Server

04:23
We as SQL Server developers send our DDL Scripts ( Add New Column, Drop some column from table, or Alter Stored Procedure) to DBA. After deployment we verify those changes and sometime it happens that the changes are not done. Maybe DBA has missed one of the script to run. If we can get the last modified date for object ( Table,Stored Procedure, View etc) that can confirm the changes are done on given date. blog post link for scripts used in this video http://sqlage.blogspot.com/2014/01/tsql-how-to-check-when-object-table.html

This means a given student can be enrolled into many courses and a given course can have many students enrolled. Below is the question asked in an interview for SQL Server Developer role. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. With this composite primary key in place, if someone tries to enroll the same student in the same course again we get violation of primary key constraint error. Alter table StudentCourses Add Constraint PK_StudentCourses Primary Key Clustered (CourseId, StudentId) Here is the SQL script that inserts data into the 3 tables as expected Declare @StudentName nvarchar(50) = 'Sam' Declare @CourseName nvarchar(50) = 'SQL Server' Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int -- If the student already exists, use the existing student ID Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName -- If the course already exists, use the existing course ID Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName -- If the student does not exist in the Students table If (@StudentId is null) Begin -- Insert the student Insert into Students values(@StudentName) -- Get the Id of the student Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- If the course does not exist in the Courses table If (@CourseId is null) Begin -- Insert the course Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) -- Get the Id of the course Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- Insert StudentId & CourseId in StudentCourses table Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) If required, we can very easily convert this into a stored procedure as shown below. Create procedure spInsertIntoStudentCourses @StudentName nvarchar(50), @CourseName nvarchar(50) as Begin Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName If (@StudentId is null) Begin Insert into Students values(@StudentName) Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End If (@CourseId is null) Begin Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) End Use the following statement to execute the stored procedure Execute spInsertIntoStudentCourses 'Tom','C#'

How to Resolve Oracle SQL Parent Key Not Found (ORA-02291)

05:49
In this video, we’ll explain what the ORA-02291 “parent key not found” error is, see an example, and look at how to resolve it. This error usually happens when we try to insert data into a table. It looks like this: Error is: ORA-02291: integrity constraint (constraint_name) violated - parent key not found So what does this error mean? It means we’re trying to insert data into a child table, and there is no related record in the parent table. If a foreign key has been set up to enforce this relationship, there needs to be a parent to insert a child that refers to it. Watch the video to see an example of this error as well as how to resolve it. For more information on Oracle SQL, refer to the Database Star website here: https://www.databasestar.com/

Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

sql server trigger execution order

06:43
sql server set trigger order sp_settriggerorder in sql server sp_settriggerorder example exec sp_settriggerorder In this video we will discuss how to set the execution order of triggers using sp_settriggerorder stored procedure. Server scoped triggers will always fire before any of the database scoped triggers. This execution order cannot be changed. In the example below, we have a database-scoped and a server-scoped trigger handling the same event (CREATE_TABLE). When you create a table, notice that server-scoped trigger is always fired before the database-scoped trigger. CREATE TRIGGER tr_DatabaseScopeTrigger ON DATABASE FOR CREATE_TABLE AS BEGIN Print 'Database Scope Trigger' END GO CREATE TRIGGER tr_ServerScopeTrigger ON ALL SERVER FOR CREATE_TABLE AS BEGIN Print 'Server Scope Trigger' END GO Using the sp_settriggerorder stored procedure, you can set the execution order of server-scoped or database-scoped triggers. sp_settriggerorder stored procedure has 4 parameters @triggername - Name of the trigger @order - value can be First, Last or None. When set to None, trigger is fired in random order @stmttype - SQL statement that fires the trigger. Can be INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE or any DDL event @namespace - Scope of the trigger. Value can be DATABASE, SERVER, or NULL EXEC sp_settriggerorder @triggername = 'tr_DatabaseScopeTrigger1', @order = 'none', @stmttype = 'CREATE_TABLE', @namespace = 'DATABASE' GO If you have a database-scoped and a server-scoped trigger handling the same event, and if you have set the execution order at both the levels. Here is the execution order of the triggers. 1. The server-scope trigger marked First 2. Other server-scope triggers 3. The server-scope trigger marked Last 4. The database-scope trigger marked First 5. Other database-scope triggers 6. The database-scope trigger marked Last Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/sql-server-trigger-execution-order.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/sql-server-trigger-execution-order_11.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html Full SQL Server Course https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4cyC4G0M1RQ_Rm52cQ4CcOJ_T_HXeMB4 All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

Writing re runnable sql server scripts Part 66

Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/06/writing-re-runnable-sql-server-scripts.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/09/part-66-writing-re-runnable-sql-server.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists What is a re-runnable sql script? A re-runnable script is a script, that, when run more than, once will not throw errors. Let's understand writing re-runnable sql scripts with an example. To create a table tblEmployee in Sample database, we will write the following CREATE TABLE sql script. USE [Sample] Create table tblEmployee ( ID int identity primary key, Name nvarchar(100), Gender nvarchar(10), DateOfBirth DateTime ) When you run this script once, the table tblEmployee gets created without any errors. If you run the script again, you will get an error - There is already an object named 'tblEmployee' in the database. To make this script re-runnable 1. Check for the existence of the table 2. Create the table if it does not exist 3. Else print a message stating, the table already exists Use [Sample] If not exists (select * from information_schema.tables where table_name = 'tblEmployee') Begin Create table tblEmployee ( ID int identity primary key, Name nvarchar(100), Gender nvarchar(10), DateOfBirth DateTime ) Print 'Table tblEmployee successfully created' End Else Begin Print 'Table tblEmployee already exists' End The above script is re-runnable, and can be run any number of times. If the table is not already created, the script will create the table, else you will get a message stating - The table already exists. You will never get a sql script error. Sql server built-in function OBJECT_ID(), can also be used to check for the existence of the table IF OBJECT_ID('tblEmployee') IS NULL Begin -- Create Table Script Print 'Table tblEmployee created' End Else Begin Print 'Table tblEmployee already exists' End Depending on what we are trying to achieve, sometime we may need to drop (if the table already exists) and re-create it. The sql script below, does exactly the same thing. Use [Sample] IF OBJECT_ID('tblEmployee') IS NOT NULL Begin Drop Table tblEmployee End Create table tblEmployee ( ID int identity primary key, Name nvarchar(100), Gender nvarchar(10), DateOfBirth DateTime ) Let's look at another example. The following sql script adds column "EmailAddress" to table tblEmployee. This script is not re-runnable because, if the column exists we get a script error. Use [Sample] ALTER TABLE tblEmployee ADD EmailAddress nvarchar(50) To make this script re-runnable, check for the column existence Use [Sample] if not exists(Select * from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS where COLUMN_NAME='EmailAddress' and TABLE_NAME = 'tblEmployee' and TABLE_SCHEMA='dbo') Begin ALTER TABLE tblEmployee ADD EmailAddress nvarchar(50) End Else BEgin Print 'Column EmailAddress already exists' End Col_length() function can also be used to check for the existence of a column If col_length('tblEmployee','EmailAddress') is not null Begin Print 'Column already exists' End Else Begin Print 'Column does not exist' End
