Chortkoff Archives: Pictures of My Family in Old Hollywood

16:19
The second installment of the Chortkoff Archives series! A study of myself and my ancestors going back several generations. Comprised of still life photography by Jessica Chortkoff. Also featuring the Chortkoff family photography. All photo editing and digital restoration by Jessica Chortkoff Photography. The Chortkoff family has a long history of amazing, hard working, charismatic and highly talented people. I actually think my dad got some of his music genes from his own dad, my grandfather Ben Chortkoff. Ben was a carpet layer by trade, but he loved jazz. He also loved taking photos. He went to see and take photos of Louis Armstrong and became very good friends with his band members and family. They regularly came over to the Chortkoff’s house for dinner, to jam, and they even went on vacation together. My dad’s favorite photo of himself as a child shows him at 7 or 8 years old holding his ears next to a trumpeting Louis Armstrong! I continue the music tradition by participating on harmonica with my man, the impossibly talented Rich Riggio, almost every Monday night at Park Bar and Grill in Burbank, CA. Both Ben and Rand Chortkoff had a self professed love of photography and journalism. Although neither of them became professional story tellers, they proved to be good documenters. My grandmother Mildred Chortkoff and great aunt, Rose Berger, kept the family photos safe for many decades. I am just here to continue the work and tell the story. The Chortkoff Archives copyright Jessica Chortkoff 2018 All rights reserved. The purpose of the Chortkoff Archives is to raise awareness of and preserve the Chortkoff (as well as the Schwartz and Newman) family history. Stay tuned to see how you might be able to help. Please share and subscribe to help keep the Chortkoff Archives alive!

If it wasn’t for the invention of the camera, many great moments in our history would be lost forever. Thankfully, we have a tremendous visual record of times past, and they help piece together history as we know it. Some photographs, however, are so rare that they show history as you’ve never seen it before. And if these never-before-seen pictures from the past prove anything, it’s that we still have a lot to learn.

How obsessive artists colorize old photos

The color of military uniforms, signs, vehicles, and world fashion spanning decades needs to be accounted for before even opening digital software like Photoshop. That means digging through sources like diaries, government records, old advertisements, and even consulting historical experts to get the colors right. But even after the arduous research, restoration, and blending of color, the image still isn’t finished. In order to achieve true photorealism, the physics of how light works in the atmosphere needs to be taken into account. Colors look different depending on the lighting conditions when the photo was taken, so artists rely on shadows and the location of light to make an educated guess about the time of day in a black-and-white photo. 29 SHOCKING PHOTOS OF THE TITANIC SURVIVORS

05:22
We're all familiar with the story of the Titanic: At 11:39 p.m. on April 14, 1912, a young lookout named Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg. His ship was headed straight for it. The Titanic made impact, and two hours and 40 minutes later, the boat was lost to the ocean forever. 2,224 people were on board. Only 700 survived. It's a tragedy that has stuck in our minds more than a century, but we're likely unfamiliar with the real faces of the people who survived it. In the images below, we see what the immediate aftermath of the tragedy looked like, from New York all the way to the UK. History of: Universal Studios Hollywood Backlot (Universal City) Los Angeles, California

09:29
100 Years of Universal: The Lot (10 minutes): A behind-the-scenes look at the movie magic created on the famous Universal Studios lot. On March 15, 1915, Carl Laemmle officially opened the gates of Universal City, the world’s first self-contained community dedicated to making movies. According to eyewitness accounts, over 15,000 people were present for Universal City’s opening day ceremonies. At the time of Universal City’s opening, the new municipality had nearly 500 residents. Among them were 75 Indians who lived in tepees on the backlot, western riders, movie “soldiers” and workmen. Although the studio officially opened in 1915, film production on the lot began in 1914. Damon and Pythias, co-starring William Worthington and Herbert Rowlinson, was the first picture completed at Universal City. As movie production at Universal City increased, a steady stream of silent films including westerns, comedies, and action-adventures became Universal’s trademark. Laemmle also began inviting visitors to Universal City to observe his movie making, establishing Universal’s long-standing tradition of welcoming guests to enjoy the behind-the-scenes magic. However, the Universal tour was temporarily halted in the late 1920s, when “talkies” became the norm and producers demanded a set free of visitor noise. A few of Universal’s most notable feature films of these early years include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The Phantom of the Opera (1925), and All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). All Quiet on the Western Front won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1930. Universal also became well known for its horror films of the early 1930s. These productions included such classics as Dracula, The Mummy,m Frankenstein, and Bride of Frankenstein. In 1936, Carl Laemmle retired from the movie industry and sold Universal to the Standard Capital Company. In the years that immediately followed, the studio relied heavily on Deanna Durbin musicals, Abbott and Costello comedies, and Francis the Talking Mule. When Universal merged with International Pictures in 1946, Leo Spitz and William Goetz from International took over production, and the company became known as Universal-International. The production of Hamlet by Universal-International in association with J. Arthur Rank of England won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1948. In 1950, Universal acquired 140 acres of land adjoining the southern boundary of the studio, increasing the overall size of Universal City to 400 acres. 1952 brought another merger to Universal when Decca Records bought the company. Under the leadership of Milton Rackmil, President of Decca and Universal, and Edward Muhl, production head, some of the notable features of this era included Pillow Talk, Operation Petticoat, To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Glenn Miller Story, and Spartacus. In December 1958, MCA, Inc. purchased the Universal City Studio Lot. MCA’s Revue Television Productions relocated to Universal City, and Universal Pictures then leased back its property from MCA. This arrangement lasted three years until MCA and Universal officially merged in 1962. Jules Stein founded MCA, or the Music Corporation of America, in 1924 as a Chicago-based agency that booked bands into clubs and dance halls. The legacy of MCA was expanded and enriched by Lew Wasserman, who joined the company in 1936, became President in 1946, and over the years built MCA from a leading talent agency into a diversified global leader in the world of entertainment..." ~ http://www.universalstudioslot.com/about-us Spoken: Steven Spielberg - Director, Jurassic Park Michael Mann - Co-Writer/Director, Public Enemies Paul Rudd - Actor, The 40-Year-Old Virgin Peyton Reed - Director, The Break-Up Jeff Pirtle - Director, Archives & Collections NBC Universal Ivan Reitman - Producer, National Lampoon's Animal House Peter Berg - Director/Producer, Battleship Dan Aykroyd - Actor, The Blues Brothers Molly Orr - Studio Tour Guide, Universal Studios Hollywood John Landis - Director, National Lampoon's Animal House Ron Howard - Director, Apollo 13 John Carpenter - Director, The Thing (1982) Phil Alden Robinson - Writer/Director, Field of Dreams Meryl Streep - Actor, Out of Africa Stage 28 - Phantom Stage (Phantom of The Opera - 1924) Theatre ©2012 Universal Studios. Dame Shirley Bassey Archive 2012 HD 1080p

08:19
Welcome to the Dame Shirley Bassey Archive for 2012. The images are in chronological order to the best of my knowledge. 2012 begins with Dame Shirley Bassey off to Cologne for some chocolate delights care of Lambertz and a great party after. Then off to the Sonoma Film Festival for the world premiere of Sir Billi, an animated movie with Sir Sean Connery, that DSB lent her vocal talents to the theme song. Back in London for a Celebration of the Arts at the Royal Academy with The Queen in attendance and a lot of Dames. The Diamond Jubilee concert was next where Dame Shirley sang Diamonds Are Forever very aptly. Party time at Elton John's White Tie And Tiara Ball again and back to Monte Carlo for the Red Cross Ball. The Western Mail released The Welsh Fame Archive Dame Shirley Bassey Edition before the end of the year. The 2 songs for this edition are Guardian Of The Highlands from the movie Sir Billi, and As God Is My Witness, the final song from The Performance album. Best wishes, Carl. I have been collecting Dame Shirley for over 45 years and have digitised my entire collection by date from newspapers, magazines, photos, programs, sheet music and of course the music. I hope this series of videos will help tell Dame Shirley's story in a lineal way for fans new and old. As a child whenever I found a photo of Dame Shirley I would wonder what the story behind the picture was, and I still do. I would cut out news clippings and put together multiple scrapbooks, then the internet came along and an explosion of knowledge. Now I know some of the stories behind many of the photos and hope you get enjoyment in finding these stories too. If you have an image from this year that I haven't included, please consider scanning it and sharing it. If you have a newspaper clipping, review or any other item that would expand the story please let me know. Dating items is a tricky process but I have tried as best I can to get the timeline correct. I hope you enjoy this series which will be ongoing, so please subscribe for new postings to come.

VINTAGE PHOTOS OF CLASSIC MOVIE STARS (PART 6)

09:27
MOVIE STARS, PART 6 (47 PHOTOS) In the early days of silent movies, the names of the actors and actresses appearing in them were not publicized or credited because producers feared this would result in demands for higher salaries. However, audience curiosity soon undermined this policy. By 1909, actresses such as Florence Lawrence and Mary Pickford were already widely recognized, although the public remained unaware of their names. Lawrence was referred to as the “Biograph Girl” because she worked for D. W. Griffith's Biograph Studios, while Pickford was "Little Mary." In 1910, Lawrence switched to the Independent Moving Pictures Company, began appearing under her own name, and was hailed as "America's foremost moving picture star" in IMP literature. Pickford began appearing under her own name in 1911. The Independent Moving Pictures Company promoted their "picture personalities", including Florence Lawrence and King Baggot, by giving them billing, credits and a marquee. Promotion in advertising led to the release of stories about these personalities to newspapers and fan magazines as part of a strategy to build brand loyalty for their company's actors and films. By the 1920s, Hollywood film company promoters had developed a "massive industrial enterprise" that "...peddled a new intangible—fame." Early Hollywood studios tightly controlled who was a movie star, as only they had the ability to place stars' names above the title; according to film historian Jeanine Basinger, this was done "only for economic reasons". 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, celebrity & famous people, life & culture, people, portraits

The images are in chronological order to the best of my knowledge. 2011 begins with the death of John Barry one of the most important people in Dame Shirley Bassey’s career, an appearance in Monaco for the Rose Ball, and a performance in London for Mikhail Gorbachev’s 80th birthday at Royal Albert Hall. Next the National Movie Awards As presenter and the Classic Brits as performer. The launch of the P & O ship Adonia and DSB as Godmother Of The ship, a garden party with Cilla and Camilla and then the Scottish Fashion Awards followed by presenting at Royal Ascot. DSB performed at The Memorial Concert for John Barry at Royal Albert Hall before returning to Monaco for the Red Cross Ball. A drama about the early years of DSBs life and career aired to good reviews, and the year ends with The Grey Goose Ball to raise funds for Elton Johns aids charity. The 3 songs for this edition are all from The Performance album This Time, After The Rain, and Our Time Is Now written by John Barry and Don Black.

VINTAGE PHOTOS OF CLASSIC MOVIE STARS (PART 1)

08:30
MOVIE STARS, PART 1 (43 PHOTOS) In the early days of silent movies, the names of the actors and actresses appearing in them were not publicized or credited because producers feared this would result in demands for higher salaries.

Adolf Hitler Speaking To Mass Crowds (1930-1939) | British Pathé

05:05
Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, is seen giving a speech to mass crowds in this footage from the 1930s at Festplatz, Tempelhof, Nr Berlin. For Archive Licensing Enquiries Visit: https://goo.gl/W4hZBv Explore Our Online Channel For FULL Documentaries, Fascinating Interviews & Classic Movies: https://goo.gl/7dVe8r #BritishPathé #History #WWII #Germany #Axis #Speech Subscribe to the British Pathé YT Channel: https://goo.gl/hV1nkf (FILM ID:468.11) Unused / unissued material - no paperwork - dates unclear or unknown. German title reads: "Der Fuhrer sprichts auf dem Festplatz in Tempelhof zu Millionen werktatiger Volksgenossen." Festplatz, Tempelhof, Nr Berlin, Germany. Large crowds arriving at what looks like a race course. Many carry banners. People carrying Swastika flags walk in. More people arrive, both in uniform and civvies. The crowd is of massive proportions. Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, stands on a podium and acknowledges the cheers of the crowd. Shots of the crowd - snow is falling heavily on the crowd - strangely it is not falling in the close up shots of Hitler. Shots of meeting place with flags flying. Shot of Hermann Goering with snow falling. CU Hitler speaking. Pan across crowd. Views of Hitler. Hitler finishes his speech with a flourish and a Nazi salute. The crowd sing 'Deutschland Uber Alles'. More views of the gathering N.B. This print is very scratched in places. Also can anyone explain how the snow doesn't fall on Hitler when it is falling so heavily on the crowd. BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. How Technicolor changed movies

11:05
What was "glorious Technicolor?" It was a groundbreaking technology — but it was more than that, too. Find an extra commentary video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJCtHs-dh0M To learn more, check out: The George Eastman Museum: https://eastman.org/ Eastman's Technicolor Online Research: https://www.eastman.org/technicolor-online-research-archive/ Barbara Flueckiger's website: http://zauberklang.ch/filmcolors/ Follow Phil Edwards on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/philedwardsinc1/ In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explores the history of Technicolor: both the technology and the company. Many people recognize Technicolor from The Wizard of Oz, but the technology existed long before then. Two strip Technicolor and three strip Technicolor both revolutionized the film industry and shaped the look of 20th century film. But Technicolor also influenced movies through its corporate control of the technology. People like Natalie Kalmus shaped the aesthetic of color films, and directors redesigned their sets and films based on the Technicolor look that the company — and viewers — demanded. Though the process we traditionally recognize as Technicolor is no longer in use (the company does continue), the look remains influential even today. Dame Shirley Bassey Archive 2015 HD 1080p

18:20
Welcome to the Dame Shirley Bassey Archive for 2015. The images are in chronological order to the best of my knowledge. 2015 begins with Dame Shirley Bassey performing at the Amfar Gala in New York, then a fan based campaign #itsgottobebassey is launched to get a 4th Bond theme for Spectre. Dame Shirley met the team at a book launch for Shooting Stars, a fundraiser for Variety charity. The launch of Dame Shirley Bassey Way outside Noah's Ark in Wales, followed by Wimbledon and the Red Cross Ball in Monaco. A photo shoot for the RNIB See The Need Campaign, attending the Spectre Bond premiere, and then the Blake Christmas album release party followed by the video for the single The Christmas Song is released. DSB presents at the ES Theatre Awards, then appears on UK TV with Graham Norton, The One Show, Lorraine and to end the year Strictly Come Dancing. The 4 songs for this edition are Englishman In New York, MacArthur Park, Here's To Life and The Christmas Song.

40 MOST POWERFUL & RARE HISTORICAL PHOTOS (VOL. 29)

08:01
Rare Photographs Vol. 29 (40 photos) Human history is truly a swinging pendulum of ups and downs. The centuries have been sprinkled with both terrible, bleak events, and beautiful hopeful moments. Since the invention of the photograph, those events and moments have been recorded for us, allowing us a window into a time that we never actually got to see for ourselves. #historyofart #HistoryNerd #historyinpictures #historylover #historybuff #HistoryInTheMaking #historychannel #historyvikings #HistoryLesson #historygeek #historymemes #historytv18 #historytv18india #historymade #HistoryMuseum #HistoryMakers #history4u #historychannelindia #historytour #historylovers #HIStoryEra #historybooks #historybook #historyteacher #HistoryMaker #historyplace #historyearned #historyphoto #historyhunters #historyworldwar2 #historyclass #historychannelvikings #historytime #HistoryPorn #historyofarchitecture #historygram #historyoffashion #HistoryPics #historyofmedicine #historyiscool #historyart #historyofindia #historybuilding #historycity #historyofwhoo #historyandpics #historyphotographed #historyrocks #historycar #historyofcinema #vintage #vintagestyle #vintagefashion #vintageshop #vintageclothing #vintagecar #vintagedecor #vintagelove #vintageinspired #vintagehome #VintageCars #VintageFurniture #VintageWedding #vintagejewelry #vintageforsale #vintagewatch #vintagedress #vintagelife #vintagefinds #vintagestore #vintagelook #vintagebag #vintagetoys #vintagephoto #vintagegirl #vintagelover #vintageclothes #vintagehair #vintagebike #vintagephotography #vintagemotorcycle #vintagechristmas #vintagewatches #VintageShopping #vintagerolex #vintagecamera #vintagedesign #vintagebooks #vintagesale #vintagetshirt #vintageguitar #vintageart #vintagelens #vintagetee #vintagemarket #vintagekitchen #vintagebride #vintageracing #VintageShirt #vintagefabric

Learning other languages from Hollywood accents | Lorraine Justice

04:18
The director of the School of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Lorraine Justice talks about her struggle to speak other languages due to terrible Hollywood accents in this hilarious, short talk. TEDArchive presents previously unpublished talks from TED conferences. Enjoy this unedited talk by Lorraine Justice. Filmed at TED University 2011. NOTE: Comments are disabled on this video. We made this difficult decision for the TED Archive because we believe that a well-moderated conversation allows for better commentary from more people and more viewpoints. Studies show that aggressive and hateful comments silence other commenters and drive them away; unfortunately, YouTube's comment moderation tools are simply not up to the task of allowing us to monitor comments on so many videos at once. (We'd love to see this change, YouTube.) So for now, if you'd like to comment on this talk, please use Facebook, Twitter or G+ to discuss with your networks.

Judy Lewis - Pictures Of The Past

03:51
Judy Lewis was born Judy Young on November 6, 1935. Her parents were the Hollywood actors Loretta Young and Clark Gable. Because of the morality clause in both their contracts and the fact that Clark Gable was married, Loretta Young brought Judy up as her adopted daughter. When Judy was four, her mother married advertising executive Tom Lewis. By the time Judy was nine, she had two half brothers, Christopher and Peter. This video, produced by her brothers and comprised mainly of family home movies and publicity photos, is a tribute to Judy's full and accomplished life, and features Peter Lewis performing his composition 'Pictures Of The Past'. Judy passed away on November 25, 2011.

Hidden Things: Roger Rabbit at Disney's Hollywood Studios - HiPS Episode 3

07:08
Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ThemeParkStop Today we're looking at props and hidden mentions of Who Framed Roger Rabbit at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Plus, we're discussing the making of the film and some of the lost attractions we never got at the park. http://orlandoparkstop.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ThemeParkStop Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ThemeParkStop Disney's Hollywood Studios opened in 1989, and was originally named the Disney-MGM Studios. Originally an entire land devoted to Roger Rabbit was planned to be added to the park, but the land was never built. Many props and homages to the rabbit can still be seen in the park to this day, including the original stunt car for Benny the Cab. We're taking a look at the history of Roger in the park, what types of rides were originally planned, and how they shot the Benny the Cab scenes for the film.
