05:33:39
Shipwrecked and cast adrift, Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput, an island inhabited by little people, whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous. His subsequent encounters - with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms and the brutish Yahoos - give Gulliver new, bitter insights into human behaviour. Swift's savage satire view mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified and finally bestial species, presenting us with an uncompromising reflection of ourselves. 1:23:45 -Part 2 2:44:00 -Part3 4:09:51 -Part 4 Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7733.Gulliver_s_Travels

Don't forget to hit the Like and Subscribe videos to make sure you receive notifications about upcoming Literature, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and World History lessons from MrBrayman.Info. This lesson gives students background information on Jonathan Swift, a conceptual introduction to satire, and background knowledge on Gulliver's Travels, especially Part 4. It's a good lesson to use before "A Modest Proposal" too. Below is the outline of the slides used in the lesson: Jonathan Swift, Satire, and Gulliver's Travels Lesson Biography of Swift Satire—Definition and Examples Background of Gulliver's Travels Connections to the Project Jonathan Swift, 1667-1745 Born in Ireland of English, Anglican parents At a time when tensions between England and Ireland were high for political and religious reasons Conflicts with the English government over his family's politics after the English Civil War and over his writing Had a great sympathy for the Irish—became somewhat of a member of both cultures Became the Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin Satire A literary form (poetry, prose, or drama) that exaggerates tendencies to make people laugh as a form of protest Uses humor as a weapon A more enlightened form of sarcasm Can be subtle or blatant, and can be serious or silly Examples of Satire How Satire Works Literal Satire: looks, feels, seems just like realistic art, but little things are exaggerated to show how ridiculous they are Unrealistic Satire (like Gulliver's Travels): fantastic places and unrealistic settings serve as metaphors for the world we live in When people laugh, they are more relaxed and willing to engage with a speaker or artist When people see things that aren't them but who do the same things they do, they can look at those things more objectively Gulliver's Travels Travel narrative—Lemuel Gulliver goes to four places: Liliput—the land of the small people Brobdingnag—the land of the giants Laputa—the land of the "scientists" The Land of the Houyhnhnms—talking horses who have more reason than men Gulliver's Travels Liliput—Swift makes fun of people's pettiness; for example, two political parties fight furiously over which end of an egg should be cracked Brobdingnag—By encountering giant humans, Gulliver shows us just how disgusting people are Laputa—The scientists of Laputa are so busy with all of their imaginary learning that their wives go astray Gulliver's Travels The Land of the Houyhnhnms In comparison to humans, horses seem very wise, just, and reasonable—so much for the Enlightenment Gulliver comes to identify with the horses and not the Yahoos—a race of human-ish creatures that have all of humanity's worst qualities What is a human? What is an animal? Are humans all that great? Connection to the Project Swift shows us slavery, racism, and genocide, and he asks us questions about all of them He makes us question the Enlightenment and the very idea of civilization and who is civilized Like many Enlightenment thinkers, he realized that Europe needed to humble itself Lesson Completed—Good Job I have provided a read-along for this Be prepared to write about satirical episodes in the selections from the book that I have given you—like a metaphor, what's the tenor and what's the vehicle, and what's Swift's purpose for the satire?

Jonathan Swift: Gulliver's Travels

30:42
Jonathan Swift (30 November 1667 -- 19 October 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer (first for the Whigs, then for the Tories), poet and cleric who became Dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. He is remembered for works such as Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity, and A Tale of a Tub. Swift is probably the foremost prose satirist in the English language, and is less well known for his poetry. Swift originally published all of his works under pseudonyms—such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M.B. Drapier—or anonymously. He is also known for being a master of two styles of satire: the Horatian and Juvenalian styles. Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships, better known simply as Gulliver's Travels (1726, amended 1735), is a novel by Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift (also known as Dean Swift) that is both a satire on human nature and a parody of the "travellers' tales" literary sub-genre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. The book became popular as soon as it was published (John Gay wrote in a 1726 letter to Swift that "It is universally read, from the cabinet council to the nursery"); since then, it has never been out of print. Gulliver's Travels has been the recipient of several designations: from Menippean satire to a children's story, from proto-Science Fiction to a forerunner of the modern novel. Published seven years after Daniel Defoe's wildly successful Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels may be read as a systematic rebuttal of Defoe's optimistic account of human capability. In The Unthinkable Swift: The Spontaneous Philosophy of a Church of England Man Warren Montag argues that Swift was concerned to refute the notion that the individual precedes society, as Defoe's novel seems to suggest. Swift regarded such thought as a dangerous endorsement of Thomas Hobbes' radical political philosophy and for this reason Gulliver repeatedly encounters established societies rather than desolate islands. The captain who invites Gulliver to serve as a surgeon aboard his ship on the disastrous third voyage is named Robinson. Gulliver's Travels - Bedtime Story (BedtimeStory.TV)

Bedtime Stories for Children (http://www.BedtimeStory.TV) | Best Children Classics HD Subscribe! https://goo.gl/1jQI2H / Play all Stories : http://goo.gl/aekZs1 Download ann play colorings : http://coloring.bedtimestory.tv YouTube channel : http://www.youtube.com/story The book begins with a short preamble in which Lemuel Gulliver, in the style of books of the time, gives a brief outline of his life and history before his voyages. He enjoys travelling, although it is that love of travel that is his downfall. During his first voyage, Gulliver is washed ashore after a shipwreck and finds himself a prisoner of a race of tiny people, less than 6 inches tall, who are inhabitants of the island country of Lilliput. After giving assurances of his good behaviour, he is given a residence in Lilliput and becomes a favourite of the court. From there, the book follows Gulliver's observations on the Court of Lilliput. He is also given the permission to roam around the city on a condition that he must not harm their subjects. Gulliver assists the Lilliputians to subdue their neighbours, the Blefuscudians, by stealing their fleet. However, he refuses to reduce the island nation of Blefuscu to a province of Lilliput, displeasing the King and the court. Gulliver is charged with treason for, among other crimes, "making water" (urination) in the capital, though he was putting out a fire and saving countless lives. He is convicted and sentenced to be blinded, but with the assistance of a kind friend, he escapes to Blefuscu. Here he spots and retrieves an abandoned boat and sails out to be rescued by a passing ship, which safely takes him back home. This book of the Travels is a topical political satire. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulliver%27s_Travels

Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels, first edition, 1726. Peter Harrington Rare Books.

03:56
[SWIFT, Jonathan], Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of several Ships, London: Benj[amin] Motte, 1726. You can view this item on our website here: http://www.peterharrington.co.uk/rare-books/english-literature-pre-1900/travels-into-several-remote-nations-of-the-world-4/ Presented by Adam Douglas, Senior Rare Book Specialist at Peter Harrington. 2 volumes, octavo (192 x 117 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines with double gilt rules either side of bands, red morocco labels, gilt roll to board edges, edges sprinkled red. Frontispiece portrait of Gulliver (second state, as called for), 4 maps and 2 plans. Early ownership inscription of S. Hamond on first title, initials on second; earlier bookplates removed from pastedowns; recent book labels of Pierre Bergé. A touch of rubbing, but a remarkably fine copy in original state, highly desirable thus. First edition, Teerink’s A edition with all the necessary points to distinguish it from the two later printings (Teerink AA and B) also dated 1726. Teerink’s A was published on 28 October, AA some time in the middle of November, and the B edition in December. The first five editions of Gulliver’s Travels (three octavo editions in 1726, one octavo and one duodecimo edition in 1727) were all published by Benjamin Motte. “The clandestine business of getting into print a pseudonymous and satirically explosive political satire entitled Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World (known from the start by its more popular title, Gulliver’s Travels) was managed chiefly by Pope, with the assistance of John Gay and Erasmus Lewis. For speed, and to counter the risk of piracy, Motte used five printing houses (those of Edward Say, Henry Woodfall, James Bettenham, William Pearson, and, for the greatest share, that of Jane Ilive). The first edition appeared on 28 October 1726 in two octavo volumes at the price of 8s. 6d., but with unauthorized deletions and insertions by Andrew Tooke (the brother of Benjamin Tooke jun.), and sold out within a week. Gay wrote: ‘From the highest to the lowest it is universally read, from the Cabinet-council to the Nursery’ … Motte followed up with two more octavo editions in 1726 and a duodecimo in 1727, and there was a serialized version which began in the Penny Post (25 November 1726). There were two Dublin editions before the end of 1726, each set up from Motte’s first edition… The book sold well in French: the first complete translation appeared at The Hague in January 1727, and an abridged adaptation by the Abbé Desfontaines in Paris in April … Swift received from Motte £200 and possibly more from the sales of the book, largely due to Pope’s effort at instilling into his friend the principles of ‘prudent management’ … Gulliver’s Travels is the book by which Swift is chiefly remembered, and it is the record of his own experience in politics under Queen Anne as an Irishman in what G. B. Shaw called ‘John Bull’s other island'” (ODNB). Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels, first edition, 1726. Peter Harrington Rare Books. https://youtu.be/VG21oL_IflE

Gulliver's Travels

28:00
Interactive Drama illustrated by schools students, Gulliver's Travels based on a book by Jonathan Swift which emerged as a famous folk story of all times, which will be encouraged by people of all age groups. Story in Short The first voyage is to Lilliput, where Gulliver is huge and the Lilliputians are small. At first the Lilliputians seem amiable, but the reader soon sees them for the ridiculous and petty creatures they are. Gulliver is convicted of treason for "making water" in the capital (even though he was putting out a fire and saving countless lives)--among other "crimes." The second voyage is to Brobdingnag, a land of Giants where Gulliver seems as small as the Lilliputians were to him. Gulliver is afraid, but his keepers are surprisingly gentle. He is humiliated by the King when he is made to see the difference between how England is and how it ought to be. Gulliver realizes how revolting he must have seemed to the Lilliputians. Gulliver's third voyage is to Laputa (and neighboring Luggnagg and Glubdugdribb). In a visit to the island of Glubdugdribb, Gulliver is able to call up the dead and discovers the deceptions of history. In Laputa, the people are over-thinkers and are ridiculous in other ways. Also, he meets the Stuldbrugs, a race endowed with immortality. Gulliver discovers that they are miserable. His fourth voyage is to the land of the Houyhnhnms, who are horses endowed with reason. Their rational, clean, and simple society is contrasted with the filthiness and brutality of the Yahoos, beasts in human shape. Gulliver reluctantly comes to recognize their human vices. Gulliver stays with the Houyhnhnms for several years, becoming completely enamored with them to the point that he never wants to leave. When he is told that the time has come for him to leave the island, Gulliver faints from grief. Upon returning to England, Gulliver feels disgusted about other humans, including his own family.
