MACBETH by William Shakespeare - FULL AudioBook - Theatrical Play Reading

It is considered one of his darkest and most powerful tragedies. Set in Scotland, the play dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when its protagonist, the Scottish lord Macbeth, chooses evil as the way to fulfill his ambition for power. He commits regicide to become king and then furthers his moral descent with a reign of murderous terror to stay in power, eventually plunging the country into civil war. In the end, he loses everything that gives meaning and purpose to his life, before losing his life itself. The play is believed to have been written between 1603 and 1607, and is most commonly dated 1606. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare's play is April 1611, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the Globe Theatre. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book. It was most likely written during the reign of James I, who had been James VI of Scotland before he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. James was a patron of Shakespeare's acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during James's reign, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's relationship with the sovereign. Macbeth is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy, and tells the story of a brave Scottish general named Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia, and he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler as he is forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion. The bloodbath swiftly takes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of arrogance, madness, and death. Shakespeare's source for the tragedy is the account of King Macbeth of Scotland, Macduff, and Duncan in Holinshed's Chronicles (1587), a history of England, Scotland and Ireland familiar to Shakespeare and his contemporaries, although the events in the play differ extensively from the history of the real Macbeth. In the backstage world of theatre, some believe that the play is cursed, and will not mention its title aloud, referring to it instead as "the Scottish play". Over the course of many centuries, the play has attracted some of the most renowned actors to the roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. It has been adapted to film, television, opera, novels, comic books, and other media. The events in the play are very different from the history of the real Macbeth, King of Scotland. Fingerstyle in Open G taught by Sandy Shalk
There is much to love about playing fingerstyle guitar in the Open G tuning (DGDGBD). Ever since the sheet music for Henry Worrall’s Spanish Fandango - written specifically for Open G - found its way into the guitar cases of parlor guitars in the 19th century, the tuning has grown in popularity. Guitarists of virtually all types of music - country, blues, folk, rock and slack key, etc. - have been susceptible to its charms. Because the guitar is tuned DBDGBD, simply playing all the strings without fretting, has a rich, appealing tone. The retuned bass strings in Open G bass enhances the guitarist’s ability to play in the keys of G and D. Employing unique chord voicings adds interest to guitar arrangements in Open G. Open G is perfect for playing tunes by the great 18th century blind Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan. I’ve included an arrangement of his Blind Mary. Two tunes from the 19th Century are included: Stephen Foster’s Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair and Sebastian Yradier’s La Paloma. Open G is perfect for giving La Paloma a tango feel. There are two tunes from the fiddle tradition: The Girl I Left Behind Me and Off to California. My Romance by Rodgers and Hart is from the jazz canon and is likely to be a first of its kind arranged in Open G. Finally, Paul Simon’s Still Crazy After all These Years works well in Open G. The tuning enhances the gospel essence of that remarkable tune. Each tune is performed and then taught phrase by phase. The arrangements are then played slowly on a split screen in order to see the movement of both hands. A tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD featuring each of the arrangements. Titles include: Blind Mary, Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, La Paloma, The Girl I Left Behind Me, Off to California, My Romance and Still Crazy After All These Years. 121 minutes • Level 2/3 • Detailed tab/music PDF booklet on the DVD To order: http://www.guitarvideos.com/products/instructors/sandy-shalk/fingerstyle-guitar-in-open-g-tuning

THE SILENCE DOGOOD LETTERS by Benjamin Franklin - FULL AudioBook | Greatest Audio Books
THE SILENCE DOGOOD LETTERS by Benjamin Franklin - FULL AudioBook | Greatest Audio Books - Mrs. Silence Dogood was a false persona used by Benjamin Franklin to get his work published, after being denied several times to send a letter to the paper publication. The Mrs. Silence Dogood letters were first printed in the New England Courant in 1722. As a teenager, Franklin worked as an apprentice in his older brother James' printing shop in Boston, where The New-England Courant was printed. Franklin never got anything he wrote published, so, at age 16, Franklin created the persona of a middle-aged widow named Silence Dogood. Once every two weeks, he would leave a letter under the door of his brother's printing shop. A total of 14 letters were sent. The first letter began: "Sir, It may not be improper in the first Place to inform your Readers, that I intend once a Fortnight to present them, by the Help of this Paper, with a short Epistle, which I presume will add somewhat to their Entertainment. And since it is observed, that the Generality of People, nowadays, are unwilling either to commend or dispraise what they read, until they are in some measure informed who or what the Author of it is, whether he be poor or rich, old or young, a Schollar or a Leather Apron Man, &c. and give their Opinion of the Performance, according to the Knowledge which they have of the Author's Circumstances, it may not be amiss to begin with a short Account of my past Life and present Condition, that the Reader may not be at a Loss to judge whether or no my Lucubrations are worth his reading." The letters poked fun at various aspects of life in colonial America, such as this quote about hoop petticoats: "These monstrous topsy-turvy Mortar-Pieces, are neither fit for the Church, the Hall, or the Kitchen; and if a Number of them were well mounted on Noddles-Island, they would look more like Engines of War for bombarding the Town, than Ornaments of the Fair Sex. An honest Neighbour of mine, happening to be in Town some time since on a publick Day, inform'd me, that he saw four Gentlewomen with their Hoops half mounted in a Balcony, as they withdrew to the Wall, to the great Terror of the Militia, who (he thinks) might attribute their irregular Volleys to the formidable Appearance of the Ladies Petticoats" The letters were published in The New-England Courant fortnightly, and amused readers. Some men wrote in offering to marry Ms. Dogood, upon learning she was widowed. Eventually, James found out that all fourteen of the letters had been written by his younger brother, which angered him. Benjamin left his apprenticeship without permission and escaped to Philadelphia (summary adapted from wikipedia.org - Attribution: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Silence_Dogood&action=history) - SUBSCRIBE to Greatest Audio Books: http://www.youtube.com/GreatestAudioBooks - Become a FRIEND: Facebook: http://www.Facebook.com/GreatestAudioBooks Google+: - READ along by clicking (CC) for Closed Caption Transcript! - LISTEN to the entire audiobook for free! My Soul Proclaims the Lord My God (Magnificat)
Marian Hymns are Christian songs focused on the Virgin Mary. They are used in both devotional and liturgical services, particularly by the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. They are often used in the month of May devotions. Some have also been adopted as Christmas hymns. Marian hymns are not popular among Protestants, as many Protestants see Marian veneration as idolatry. However, the practice is very common among Christians of Catholic traditions, and a key component of the Eastern Orthodox liturgy. There are many more hymns to Mary within the Eastern Orthodox yearly cycle of liturgy than in Roman Catholic liturgy.[1] The Magnificat hymn (song of the Virgin Mary) is one of the 8 most ancient Christian hymns and author Marjorie Reeves states that it is perhaps the earliest Christian hymn.[2] The Magnificat is named after the opening line in the 4th century Vulgate Bible, based on Luke 1:46-55, and continues to be widely used to date by Roman Catholics, Anglicans and the Eastern Orthodox.[3] Marian hymns are at times shared among different groups of Christians, or are influenced by other hymns. For instance, The second stanza of the Anglican hymn Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones is derived from the Eastern Orthodox hymn to the Theotokos.[4] Marian hymns may be analyzed to shed light on the Mariological approach within a given historical period, e.g. the Akathist to the Theotokos has been the subject of detailed study related to the Marian themes it presents within its various components.
