Six Months At Sea In The Merchant Marine

22:05
In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me, therefore please excuse the couple of shipping terms I misused (such as saying "license" when I should have said "credential"). I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching. Young, and Training for a Good Job -- at Sea

This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Many new college graduates in the United States have trouble finding a job in the weak economy. But not graduates from the California Maritime Academy. The academy is the only school of its kind on the West Coast. Students attend classes on the university campus in northern California. But they also gain experience by going to sea in a floating classroom, the training ship Golden Bear. Two hundred eighty-eight cadets recently sailed on a two-month international training cruise. The ship travels south to the Panama Canal. Along the way, it visits countries in Central America and the Caribbean.Vasile Tudoran is a mechanical engineering student at the California Maritime Academy. He spends much of his time working deep in the heart of the ship. He says he is not worried about finding a job.Robert Jackson is one of his teachers. He says the majority of the academy's students have between one and two job offers before they complete their studies. He says most of those job offers are between 60 and 120 thousand dollars a year. In addition to working on ships, he says, engineering graduates from the academy also get jobs with power companies and satellite companies. Instructor Bill Schmid says the situation for marine transportation students is not as bright as it was before the economic downturn, but it is recovering. He says most academy graduates are employed in the industry, if they want to be. He also says the coursework is demanding because ship's officers are almost like doctors or airplane pilots. He says people working in the shipping industry have to make the right decision all the time. He says a success rate of seventy percent is unacceptable. The California Maritime Academy has a 94 percent job placement rate. Still, only about 900 students are currently studying there. Cadet Andrew Di Tucci says the academy is different from a traditional college. It is a paramilitary school, and the students must wear uniforms. Andrew Di Tucci is majoring in marine transportation. He says, when he was growing up, he was always told it takes a special person to want to go to sea for a living. In his words, "my favorite thing about it is waking up every morning and seeing nothing but the ocean on all sides of you. I get a thrill out of that."For VOA Special English, I'm Mario Ritter. On Jan. 17 Naval Station Norfolk hosted a Shipmates to Workmates career forum to assist Sailors who are transitioning from military to civilian careers. Programs and job fairs like this help our Sailors find and compete for jobs in the private sector by facilitating opportunities to learn more about transition resources, get assistance with job applications and help prepare for the move from military to civilian life.
While visiting the job fair, Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Mark Ferguson spoke with Sailors in attendance about career opportunities and the transitioning benefits available to them and their families.

Offshore Oil Rig Jobs, Typical day.

04:58
Oil Rig Jobs http://www.rigzone.com/oil/jobs/categories/drilling-rig-personnel-3/ https://www.airswift.com/as/oil-rig-job-vacancies/ Ensure you meet the minimum qualifications for employment on almost any oil rig. They are the following: You are over 18 years of age. You are very physically fit. You should also be mentally fit. You will be required to pass a physical exam before being hired. You are a non-smoker, and you can abstain from alcohol during your long 14 to 21 day shifts. You are willing and able to take on the unusual schedule of an oil rig worker. You should be open to working nights, and you should be able to work many days on end without weekend breaks. An oil rig is a manned platform used for land or off-shore drilling. An oil rig worker can denote an employee on either platform, responsible for a large number of duties associated with safely drilling for oil. The schedule for most workers consists of working 14 to 21 consecutive days before being given time off. As well as earning a wage, most offshore oil rig workers are provided food and board and some travel expenses. Getting your first job on an oil rig may be the toughest part of the process, because oil rig managers value experience.

Studying in a Floating Classroom for a Life at Sea

02:24
Deep inside the ship named Golden Bear, it is hot -- and the engines are noisy. But Vasile Tudoran loves what he is doing here. VASILE TUDORAN: "I knew I wanted to fix stuff since I was a little kid." Vasile Tudoran is a mechanical engineering student at the California Maritime Academy. Most of the Academy's students are required to receive training on this ship. Teacher Robert Jackson says this gives them the "hands on" experience that businesses want. ROBERT JACKSON: "I would say the majority of our students have between one to two job offers before they graduate. Most of those job offers are between $60 and $120,000. Our students have such a broad knowledge they can go anywhere." He says students get jobs working on ships, with electric power centers or satellite companies. The academy has only about 900 students. About 94 percent of them get a job after their studies are completed. Andrew Di Tucci says he and other students know they must follow the Academy's rules. ANDREW DI TUCCI: "It's not like your normal college experience would be. We're a paramilitary school, we have uniforms, we have formations -- just disciplining yourself to show up and keep grooming standards and be where you need to be, and sit down, buckle your belt, and study." The students carry heavy responsibilities on the ship and homework for their classes. BILL SCHMID: "Ship's officers are kind of like your surgeon or your airplane pilot - you don't want them to be right only 70 percent of the time. We pretty much have to be right all the time. That's a hard thing to teach young people -- that there's zero tolerance for mistakes." Andrew Di Tucci loves life at sea. ANDREW DI TUCCI: "My favorite thing about it is waking up every morning and seeing nothing but the ocean on all sides of you. I get a thrill out of that." Feeling that excitement -- and eventually getting paid for it -- is what influences these students. I'm Shirley Griffith.

How to Become a Dolphin Trainer

03:11
California travel expert Veronica Hill of http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com learns the basics of becoming a dolphin trainer in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Today we're at San Diego Sea World where we're going to learn how to become a dolphin trainer. One of the world's most sought-after careers, dolphin trainers are a talented lot, combining a deep understanding of these intelligent ocean mammals with strong swimming and public speaking skills. To find out more, I joined Sea World's Dolphin Interaction program, where dolphin trainer Mary Sears showed me some basic training signals with resident dolphins Sandy and Ripley. After some fun moments in the pool, Mary explained some of the requirements for becoming a dolphin trainer. "What we look for here at Sea World are people who are very strong swimmers, at least 18 years of age who know how to scuba dive, people who are very comfortable with public speaking and we look for people who have a 4-year degree and possibly other animal experience." "Most of our trainers have backgrounds in either psychology or biology fields, but our training here is all on-the-job training. So there are some trainers who sometimes have a variety of backgrounds and then they come here and they learn it. According to Sea World, "Killer whales, dolphins, sea lions and other marine mammals are trained using operant conditioning and positive reinforcement. Operant conditioning is a method of behavior modification in which a subject is taught to behave in a desired manner and is then rewarded. SeaWorld animal trainers acknowledge a desired behavior with a positive reinforcement: the blow of a whistle, some fish or maybe a rubdown. Animals are never punished for incorrect behavior. They are taught that failure is OK, and that trainers will continue on through application of a training tool called the 'least reinforcing scenario.' Participation is completely voluntary." How many tricks, or behaviors can dolphins learn? "Endless! How ever many we can train them. So training for the dolphins is ongoing, throughout their whole lifetime. So it's a really good stimulation for them. After they learn a lot of behaviors, we can start pairing behaviors together to give them extra stimulation and more things to learn. What exactly goes into the swim test to become a trainer here? The swim test has three main components. There is a freestyle swim of around 125 yards, there's an underwater portion of the swim thats around 120 feet. You have to make it all the way across dolphin stadium without any breaths. And then a surface dive from the water down to the bottom of our 26-foot deep pool. In 60-degree salt water! Can you tell me any stories about the dolphins, anything that's been particularly rewarding for you? In addition to physical strength, trainers also must have a good understanding of animal psychology and behavior. I think the most rewarding thing here is getting to build a relationship with the animals and seeing how you spend more and more time every single day with them, they get to know you. And you have that history with them, and they respond well to you. That's the best thing I have about this job. That's the most rewarding. And then getting to share that with other people who come here to meet the animals." To learn more about dolphin trainer jobs, sign up for Sea World's Trainer for a Day program or specialized camps where you can work alongside a real dolphin trainer. "We have some day camps and we also have a week-long resident camp. The campers live in our dormitory facilities and they do a variety of activities so they understand what the trainers do on a daily basis, what our animal care team does, what our aquarium departments do, just to learn about all the different parts of Sea World." A dolphin trainer salary averages between $40,000 - 60,000 per year, but dolphin trainer jobs are hard to come by. Just study, work hard, volunteer when you can, and maybe one day your dream will come true. Sea World Dolphin Trainer Requirements: • Applicants must be at least 18 years old, scuba-certified and must pass a physical test in order to even qualify for an interview; • Physical strength, a love and understanding of animals and a flair for showmanship; • Upbeat personality and strong swimming and public speaking skills • Willingness to perform less glamorous duties including feeding, cleaning, observing and caring for the animals • Four-year degree preferred in animal psychology or biology; • Swim test that includes carrying two 30-pound buckets 50 feet, a 250-foot freestyle swim to be completed in 1 minute, 20 seconds; 125' underwater swim with no breaths; 26-foot surface dive to retrieve a flag; memorize and perform an excerpt from one of the shows.
