But, most of us don't encounter haute couture very often, unless we're looking at a celebrity on the red carpet, a model on a catwalk, or a mannequin in a museum case. We wanted to get closer to couture — and to get you closer to couture — so we partnered with the legendary fashion publisher Visionaire to create this video, which tells the story of one dress from birth to runway. It’s a unique look inside the Dior atelier, where the team has been hard at work bringing creative director Raf Simons’ ideas to life. While an individual couture garment can take half a year to produce, here you will see the story of one dress (“Look #53,” in fashion-speak) come together in just a few minutes — from the first muslin pattern to the final style model Kinga Rajzak wore during yesterday’s haute couture show. It’s an incredible revelation, and when you discover what goes into these garments, the crazy prices on couture start to seem at least a little less crazy. While Look #53 is the star of the show, the video gives us the chance to reconnect with the rarely credited artisans and seamstresses we saw in Dior and I, as well as a cameo from Simons himself. Think of this as a mini-trip to Paris or a crash course into fashion’s highest form; either way, enjoy your couture, concentrated. It’s 1947. France is in the midst of reconstruction after the war. Although fabrics are being rationed, a young designer wins the world over to his daring vision of feminine elegance. He once again establishes Paris as the capitol of fashion. His name, Christian Dior, is destined to reach the realm of myth. This man, however, who so completely changed and glamorized haute couture from 1947 to 1957, contradicts the extroverted, flamboyant image the public has of fashion designers. Christian Dior, never comfortable with his celebrity, was a reserved, conservative man who hadn’t even considered working in the fashion industry. The events that led up to his role as “director of dreams for high society” astonished him more than anyone. He was a down-to-earth, humble man who treated the 900 employees of his large company as family. They were the ones he worked with to make the creations he so enjoyed drawing a reality. What are the roots of Dior’s impeccable taste? What inspired his dynamic creativity and amazing success? His childhood in Normandy, the everlasting image of his mother’s elegance, as well as his love of flowers, art, and architecture, help unravel the mystery of the man behind the myth.

In 2017, to coincide with the NGV’s House of Dior: Seventy years of Haute Couture, two new couture works were commissioned for the fashion and textiles collection with funds donated by the David Richards Bequest and the F&T Supporters Group. Essence d’Herbier was commissioned by the NGV after Katie Somerville, Senior Curator Fashion and Textiles attended Maria Grazia Chiuri’s first Dior Couture show in Paris in January 2017. In July 2016, Chiuri became the seventh designer and first female artistic Director at Christian Dior and her couture debut coincided with the 70th anniversary of the house. As part of the acquisition process, documentary photography and film footage was taken in order to reveal some of the specialist techniques, tools and production methods specific to the making of couture garments and to give a behind-the-scenes-glimpse into the Dior ateliers.

Watch more Fashion Designers and Fashion Brands videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500167-Christian-Dior-Fashion-Designers Christian Dior was one of the most influential designers of the Twentieth Century and certainly one of the most famous. He studied political science and did a short stint running an art gallery. He started selling sketches to fashion designers around 1935. He went to work for the designer Robert Piguet in 1938 and he stayed there until he had to do his military during World War Two. After the war he went to work for another prominent designer, Lucien Lelong and he stayed there until 1946. With backing from a textile company he left Lelong and decided to open up his own Couture house. The first collection that he presented on February 12, 1947 was immediately successful and one of the most influential first collections in the history of fashion. The collection he presented on February 12, 1947 shortly became known as his New Look collection. That wasn't the name Dior gave to it, but it was actually kind of bestowed on him by Carmel Snow, an American fashion editor. The clothes were so luxurious and so much more lavish and feminine than what people had been used to during war time, Carmel Snow said, oh, Christian you've created this new look and the name stuck. Obviously, people all over referred to it as the New Look collection. It really defined fashion for the next ten years. After his first collection, Dior rose quickly to become one of the major taste makers in fashion. Every collection he unveiled was eagerly anticipated. People said, what is Christian Dior gonna show us for spring? What's the Dior line for winter? These things were really looked forward to. He experimented with a different silhouette every year. He was always inspired by beautiful fabric and fashion at this time really stressed a very sophisticated mature look and that Christian Dior really delivered. To prepare his collections he always sketched his concepts in secret. He went off to his country house and worked there and then kind of arrived in Paris with the idea for the next collection. Despite his power and his influence he was a very modest man and was very personable. His models and his employees all liked him. He was very influential as a taste maker for the next ten years. Even though his career was relatively short Christian Dior was amazingly influential as a fashion designer and the House of Dior continues to be a major force in high fashion.

The German-born designer Karl Lagerfeld has died at the age of 85. He was a designer, an artist and a fashion icon. For this sad occasion we recommend a portrait DW made in 2014. No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, was as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, 2018 the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses celebrated his 85th birthday. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments were notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld worked in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary of 2015 follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Watch more Fashion Designers and Fashion Brands videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500166-Dior-Fashion-Designers-Fashion-Designers Though the house has retained the name of its founder, there's been a string of important designers that have worked for the House of Dior and each one has made an important contribution to the label. When Christian Dior died suddenly in 1957 the fashion world was thrown into a panic, but fortunately he had a young assistant who stepped up and took his place. And that young assistant happened to be Yves St. Laurent. Young assistant he really was because he was only 21 at the time. He stepped in and produced a beautiful collection called the Trapez collection and put people's fears to rest. Yves St. Laurent stayed at the house until 1960 when he had to leave to do his obligatory military service. Of course, while he was gone, the house needed a designer, so they brought in Marc Bohan, another respected designer. Marc Bohan stayed at Dior until 1989 when the house felt it needed a change. And then they brought in Gianfranco Ferre, an Italian designer. Ferre stayed until 1996 when he was replaced by John Galliano who designed until 2011. So even though we think about the House of Dior and associate it with Christian Dior, obviously many other designers have contributed to the excellence of the brand.

It was founded in 1946 by Christian Dior, and is now part of LVMH, the largest luxury goods company in the world. Dior offers couture, ready to wear for men, women and children, jewelry, accessories, fragrance and watches. Christian Dior was one of the first designers to do licensing of products. One of his first fragrance, Miss Dior, was introduced in 1947, and beautiful silk ties for men were available as early as 1949. Baby Dior, which is often regarded as the kind of, gold standard of children's wear, was introduced in 1967. That's a brief history of the Dior brand, and an introduction to the range of beautiful products that they offer.

Watch more Fashion Designers and Fashion Brands videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500165-Dior-Haute-Couture-Fashion-Designers Well Christian Dior launched a ready-to-wear line in New York in 1948 and the House of Dior includes many different lines. The reputation of the house was built on couture. In fact, at one point in the mid 50's it was said that the House of Dior was responsible for half of the couture sales in Paris. The couture designs established the looks for each season, and the look trickled down into mainstream fashions through department stores and through private clients who were instrumental in setting fashions. The couture designs established fashions that trickled down into all levels of fashion. Private people bought couture pieces. Department stores bought pieces to copy, and there were licensed copies that were sold. After the glory years of Dior couture in the 1950s, the business dwindled somewhat in later decades. Later designers, in particular John Galliano, really brought excitement back to the couture with over-the-top theatrical presentations. Some of his designs, obviously, were suitable only for the runway they were so theatrical and so over-the-top. Many of the designs are found in a modified form for gala evenings and runway creations. So the couture is really an important laboratory for designers where they work out their most extravagant concepts, and that's especially true at the House of Dior.

Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent, known as Yves Saint Laurent (French pronunciation: [iv sɛ̃ lɔʁɑ̃], August 1, 1936 -- June 1, 2008), was a French fashion designer, and is regarded as one of the greatest names in fashion history In 1957, Saint Laurent found himself at age 21 the head designer of the House of Christian Dior S.A.. His spring 1958 collection almost certainly saved the enterprise from financial ruin; the straight line of his creations, a softer version of Dior's New Look, catapulted him to international stardom with what would later be known as the "trapeze dress." Others included in the collection were dresses with a narrow shoulder and flared gently at the bottom. At this time, he shortened his surname to Saint Laurent because the international press found his hyphenated triple name difficult to spell. His fall 1958 collection was not greeted with the same level of approval as his first collection, and later collections for the House of Dior featuring hobble skirts and beatnik fashions were savaged by the press. In 1959, he was chosen by Farah Diba, who was a student in Paris, to design her wedding dress for her marriage to the Shah of Iran. In 1960, Saint Laurent found himself conscripted to serve in the French Army during the Algerian War of Independence. Alice Rawsthorn writes that there was speculation at the time that Marcel Boussac, the owner of the House of Dior and a powerful press baron, had put pressure on the government not to conscript Saint Laurent in 1958 and 1959 but reversed course and asked that the designer be conscripted after the disastrous 1960 season so that he could be replaced. http://www.3emeGauche.tv Premier défilé pour le successeur de John Galliano : Raf Simons prend les commandes de la maison Dior C'était l'événement le plus attendu de la fashion week parisienne : le premier défilé de Raf Simons, le nouveau directeur artistique de Dior.

Although his family, who had made their fortune in the fertiliser business, wanted him to become a diplomat, his wish was to be involved in the arts, such as fashion and sketching. He began by selling his sketches on the streets for about ten cents each, and after graduating from school, his father helped him to open a small art gallery. After a family disadvantage, he had to close the gallery and it wasn’t until 1946 that Dior founded his own fashion house. Christian Dior joined decided to become a fashion designer and joined couturier Robert Long’s fashion house in 1938. Shortly thereafter, Dior was required to serve in the army to fight in the Second World War. In 1942, after completing his military service, Christian Dior moved to Paris and worked at Lucien Lelong’s design house. The year 1947 marked the unveiling of Dior’s famous “New Look.” This “New Look” was more voluptuous and featured a full skirt, cinched waist, rounded shoulders, and a beautiful silhouette. Christian Dior sought to show off the beautiful and curvaceous female form. In 1947, Dior was awarded the Neiman Marcus award for his creative and adventurous “New Look” fashions. By the 1950s Dior took the lead in the clothing and fashion industries. His designs gave women a much more feminine look such as the Princess Line, in 1953, that soon became popular with the A-Line skirts. He also challenged the wartime austerity look by his lavish use of bold material. It was after the war that women desired a more feminine and elegant kind of look and Dior gave it to them thus becoming the leader of a major turning point in terms of fashion. Elegance dictated the new trend, and even though Dior was producing what women elected as the new trends, Hollywood had a major role in fifties fashion because they helped with their indirect advertising. Elegant and classic styles, such as the ones Christian Dior was offering in combination with flowers, stripes, spots and abstract shapes, were splashed across fashion and glamour magazines like Vogue and Women’s Weekly; and Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly, idols of the time, became style icons by using these new designs, portraying a continental alternative defined as chic and modern. However, Dior was not the only brand that was emerging in the post war era. Christian Dior faced a challenge when Chanel appeared in the industry with a new design: The Chanel suit. The collarless, fitted jacket bonded with the skirt below the knees was all about elegance and sophistication and women were rapidly, as what happens with the fashion trends, changing their minds about the new and upcoming designs. In 1957, Christian Dior died in Montecatini, Italy at the age of 52. After his death, Dior’s granddaughter took over the company and together with his original innovative designs, and her creative outlook, the company reached new heights. Dior originally marketed clothing but over time, the brand expanded to include sunglasses, make-up, watches, shoes, furs, gloves, perfumes, jewellery, and ready-to-wear clothing. The Dior brand has become an international sensation and has flagship boutiques in cities such as New York, London, Milan, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Madrid, Shanghai, Boston, Seoul, Barcelona, and New Delhi. ### My YouTube Channel Information Subscribe to my channel: https://goo.gl/Ywk71f My most recent upload: https://goo.gl/rY5eSK My most popular upload: https://goo.gl/YUCtio ### Acknowledgements This presentation contains images that were used under a Creative Commons License. In celebration of the House of Dior's 70th anniversary, the Royal Ontario Museum presents Christian Dior, an exhibition focusing on the early years of Christian Dior haute couture from 1947 to 1957. This retrospective runs from November 25, 2017 to March 18, 2018. it explores the brilliance behind Christian Dior's dramatic creations that revived the Paris fashion industry following the Second World War. Presented by Holt Renfrew, the exhibition draws from the ROM's permanent collection of Textiles and Fashions and is augmented with loans of accessories. Christian Dior features more than 100 objects, including 38 designs from daytime and evening wear to grand occasions. Born in 1905 in Granville, France, Christian Dior began his career in Paris as a freelance designer and sketch artist, selling fashion illustrations to magazines in 1935. His first job in an haute couture house was in 1938 when Robert Piguet hired him as modéliste. In 1941, Christian Dior joined the house of Lucien Lelong as assistant designer and in 1946 he set up his own couture house. On February 12, 1947, Christian Dior presented his first collection, that became known as "The New Look" The soft shoulders, cinched waist, accentuated hips and long full skirts of Christian Dior's masterful cuts swept away the wartime masculine silhouette and launched a fashion revolution that influenced women's fashion throughout the 1950's and continues to this day. reporter / narrator: Ilona Kauremszky video: Stephen Smith music: Kevin MacLeod: http://incompetech.com/ http://twitter.com/mycompasstv http://www.mycompass.ca mycompasstv ~ travel + arts + lifestyle
