This Central Park South home qua gallery fuses its owners’ love of art and aversion to natural materials with a vision of forward-thinking material design and architecture, brought to life by interior designer Carl D’Aquino and architect Francine Monaco, of D’Aquino Monaco. See how, in this episode of Interior Lives, D’Aquino and Monaco pulled it all off, as our design editor, Wendy Goodman, tours the space and reveals why it’s so important to approach home design with a spirit of adventure.

What makes for good type, layout and design? How can you art direct a designer when it comes to typography. Are there any examples or tutorials on critiquing typography for something with a lot of type? The principles of typography and design are discussed on the second part of Chris Do's review and art direction with graphic designer Minhye Cho. The Futur's upcoming magazine (featuring writing by members of The Futur community) is in development, so Chris Do has decided to shed light on his process while critiquing the work of Minhye Cho, an amazing graphic designer at Blind who is working on the layout. Chris goes in depth with regards to typography and how the print process will affect final costs and the quality (both objective and perceived) of the printed publication. In addition, they review some mock-up created to test the flexibility of The Futur's own logo, a process necessary to determining the long-term viability of a brand's mark. The latest HYPEBEAST Magazine Issue 21: The Renaissance Issue is loaded with intimate stories that shed a light on a new swathe of multi-talented creatives. One of these subjects is fine art wunderkind, Reginald Sylvester II. The New York City-based artist is certainly one of the youngest individuals to make a profound impact in the industry, continuously breaking convention with his visceral artworks that perch on the border between abstract and figurative. “Part of being a great artist is being able to reflect the times you live in. For me it’s important to like, when I’m going through something in life and feeling a certain way, to not just pass through that emotion and just to leave it but to drown myself in it and reflect that on the surface in some way," said Sylvester II. “I create off the motion. I create off the moment and letting that moment pass through my body and onto the surface.” We recently connected with Sylvester II at his studio in Brooklyn’s Bedford– Stuyvesant neighborhood for the latest installment of our HYPEBEAST Impressions video series that delves into the mind of today’s leading art contemporaries. Watch the video above to learn about his transformation as a fine artist, designing for streetwear brands, and more. Watch more How to Make the Best Coffee videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/494739-How-to-Make-a-Latte-Art-Heart-Perfect-Coffee My name is Mike Jones, and I'm a barista at Third Rail Coffee right by Washington Square Park in New York City. I'm going to teach you some basic coffee-making skills. Alright, I'm going to talk to you about latte art. Latte art is kind of the exciting part of making espresso drink. It's what gets a lot of people really pumped about making coffee. It's not necessarily a representation of a quality beverage, but it definitely shows that the person who made it cared—it's the mark of a professional, similar to plating with food. Now, the first thing you need is a good shot of espresso. You need the milk steamed properly with good micro foam, and then you have to pour, keeping a few things in mind. This is velocity, so basically how fast you're pouring. And then where the milk is going in the cup, and where it's flowing outwards. It's kind of something you have to feel out and you really have to practice it many many times to get down. So we're going to start off by doing the heart. This is sort of the basic latte art design and then the other one would be a rosetta which is a fern, and then a tulip. So heart, rosetta, tulip are the three basic designs you can do with latte art. So I'm going to start off making the heart, pulling a shot, steaming the milk and then pouring. Alright, so when you're starting to pour latte art, the first thing you want to do is pour from a greater distance up, or from a greater height so that way the milk is actually going to go underneath the espresso and then as you get closer and start pouring faster, the foam rises to the top and this is when you start controlling it. So to make the heart, you're basically just going to be pouring into the center until you see it's about three-quarters full. So I'm pouring into the center there. Then as I get closer, the foam will rise to the top and you just kind of shake it, and then you lift it up at the end to suck it in and cut through. So again, pouring to the center, getting close when it's three-quarters full, pulling up to suck in and then cutting through. That's a heart.

I have a link below that shows my most recent magazine project that I worked on in InDesign which is also shown in the tutorial today. This print job wasn't cheap, but it was worth it. Collectively, these signs will form a mural on my garage door. The artwork was designed by Sketchytrails, or Kristina. Between her, the printer, and myself, we needed to get the sizing and spacing just right to fit in these cutouts. Between the weight of the insulation and the mural, my garage door is going to need heavier springs. The mural is dedicated to my three main sponsors, Diamondback, Box, and of course my Patrons. In June they chose a Taco bike for their logo. Next year my Patrons will choose something else, and we’ll update the mural with a new panel. This piece was designed to look like an extension of the shop, as if we’re standing on this cliff overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains. With this mural complete, it’s time for me to show you how the shop has changed. Back in the spring, we built this workshop with pretty basic tools and supplies. From the start I installed a bench grinder, and a shitty vice. You guys wanted me to get a refrigerator, but I decided against it on account of the noise and heat. I did get a speaker system though, and an air compressor. For all of you who requested a flat screen tv, I got something better. This projector is for live streaming. With a 90 inch projection, I can read your comments from across the shop while working on bikes. Of course the lights need to be dimmed to make it visible, but that’s what I get for using an $85 Amazon Projector. Maybe we’ll upgrade this in the future. The foam floor has been holding up great, and it’s easy to keep clean too. As long as it’s dry, this blower makes quick work of leaves, dust, and dried up mud from rides. I use it every day. When the shop is clean it feels just like another room in the house. Of course, with such a huge door the shop seems to accumulate bugs. I found a solution for that too. You can throw shop towels at them but there are just too many. While bug zappers are next to useless outdoors, this one works like magic. With all the lights off and the door closed, this place is a ghost town by morning. This ladder has also become a tool I use every day. For that reason, it lives right next to the work bench on this hook, ready for action on a moment’s notice. Since the original build I added a lot of things out of necessity. This second bike rack will be great for guest parking, and these shelves will hide anything I don’t want laying out in the shop. I even use this box to organize my spare hardware, with dedicated containers for machine screws, chain, lag bolts, and rubber. Eventually I’ll need something bigger. Most shops have dedicated sticker space. This metal cabinet also stores my gear, from helmets to camera batteries. Speaking of which, we built this charging case during a livestream. It opens up to reveal a plug, which powers this usb hub. This can charge all of my cameras and batteries at once, in the shop or on the road. While I do keep most of my non bike tools tucked away, the left side of the pegboard holds the stuff I use most, like sockets, cordless power tools, and drill bits. While the bins under the pegboard have proven useful, I’m already starting to outgrow them. Most shops are a work in progress. My home bike shop has been dubbed the hackshack by my subscribers. It’s a set for this channel, but also a very functional workspace for everything from hacks to legitimate bike repairs. I hope you found this shop update entertaining. Before you ask where I got something in the shop, check the description for links. There’s also a link to the original build video from the spring. Let me know what you think, and tell me about your shop below, even if it’s the corner of your living room or trunk of your car. Now that my shop is finally done, we can get back to Berm Creek. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

Joe Shih Architects and Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop have won the international competition to design an art museum in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Called "The Hill", the winning design for the Taoyuan Museum of Art features a pair of buildings with inclined green roofs on either side of a raised railway. The back-to-back buildings form a "symbolical gate and hub" for the city of Taoyuan. Let's start with the first stitch I learnt as a child, detached chain (also know as lazy daisy stitch). Each detached chain forms a petal shape and we can put them together, with points touching in the center, to form a simple flower. I would like to be your virtual friend, sitting by your side, guiding you through the different stitches and techniques that we can experience together. CALL FOR SUPPORT: SLANTED MAGAZINE AND EXPOSITION www.slanted.de/cuba Show the world's extraordinary Cuban poster designers and artists, published and exposed by Slanted, an independent magazine about typography, photography, graphic design and illustration. First of all, thank you for taking the time to review our project, we appreciate very much that you're spending some time with CUBAN POSTER ART -- The New Generation. ABOUT THIS PROJECT We discovered the amazing power of Cuban poster art. First, Natalie Seisser, a graphic designer from Paris, came up to see us this year in April to show striking work from her Cuban designer friends. Lars Harmsen (editor of Slanted) went to Cuba this summer and met some of Natalie's friends -- as well as other artists and photographers. All of them are creating beautiful work, more analogue than digital, with a very human and warm touch. How could we create wider awareness for their amazing work and give those artists an international voice? As editor of Slanted magazine, together with Markus Lange and Falko Gerlinghoff (Burg Giebichenstein, University of Art and Design), we thought it would be great to publish this special issue: CUBAN POSTER ART -- The New Generation. Beyond cigars, American old timer cars and Che Guevara T-shirts Cuba has a strong tradition of graphic design. From the fifties until the embargo the county has been a major center for new ideas and creative design experiments. Nowadays the contrast is striking as there is in Cuba barely any publicity billboards, packaging, flyers, stickers, brands ... They have all been replaced over the years by government propaganda posters but against all odds the spirit of creativity remains still much alive. Since the nineties a new generation of graphic designers has emerged and they hold on tight to the course of history. They are unfortunately still unknown and they strive to survive in a complicated economic and political situation without any means to be recognized by the rest of the world. HISTORICAL CONTEXT During over fifty years of revolutionary power, the history and evolution of Cuba are connected to images and pictures. The society is based on culture and puts forward its creativity and diversity. Cuban poster production has reached its summit between the years 1965 and 1975. Artists and Graphic Designers have created their own efficient graphic language in order to educate and convey revolutionary ideals. The history of Cuban Graphic Design has seen then the birth of its masters. From the eighties, Cuba has suffered many economic difficulties due to the deterioration of exchanges with the USSR. The poster is as a consequence no more a government priority and material means become scarce in the workshops and orders are rare. A majority of Graphic Designers decide to leave the country and part of the island culture disappear with them. In 1984, the government opens the first Graphic Design School in the country, the ISDI (Superior Institute of Industrial Design) with the target to train professionals in the Design and Communication sector. Five years later, the first Graphic Designers graduate, start to work and boost the poster production. Little by little the organisms work again with this new generation and the history of Cuban Graphic Design is revived. GOAL: PUBLICATION AND EXPOSITION This special issue of Slanted, CUBAN POSTER ART -- The New Generation, will be released in spring 2013, attracting attention to an international level. This project has the goal to raise € 10,000 (≈ $ 13,000) additionally to our usual budget. We want to cover expenses we usually don't have: 1. For an exhibitions with original silkscreened posters, touring from city to city. Shipping, organization and insurances for first shows in Berlin, Leipzig and Paris will cost € 4,000 (≈ $ 5,167) 2. Translations: The magazine will be bilingual (Spanish/English). With a volume of 320 pages we will have to translate all interviews and texts either to English or Spanish. This needs to be done professionally and will be € 4,500 (≈ $ 5,813) 3. Additional print of 1,000 copies that will be shipped to Cuba. Whoever has been in Cuba knows how hungry Cubans are for good printed matter. Extra printing: € 1,500 (≈ $ 1.938) This project funded will enable us to share what we see as being an extraordinary inside view into Cuban design, reflecting the reality of life in Cuba and the beauty that lies within its complexity. We asked longtime friend of Ironlak Jimmy Bligs to bring some much needed life to a boring white wall next to Ironlak Art & Design Sydney inside Central Park Mall in Chippendale. With a long established background in graffiti, Sydney based artist Jimmy Bligs has expanded his practice to large scale murals and fine art. His work depicts a juxtaposition of native wildlife in the built environment, merging the grit and textures of urban landscapes with abstract natural forms. Before construction commenced at our new Sydney store, Ironlak Art & Design, we asked Brisbane-based artist Emmanuel Moore to decorate the temporary hoarding that sealed the site while the store was built. He created the piece in one day, on location inside the Central Park centre. Kicking off during trading hours, Moore used Sugar Artists’ Acrylic to create his base fills, background clouds and shading – the low odour proving helpful in not completely fuming out the busy shopping centre location. When it came to the outlines, Ironlak Pump Action Paint Markers were the quick and easy solution. The piece was in place for a couple of months while the builders did their thing. Eventually being ripped down to unveil the new store. Check out what we built by visiting the store today. We’re open 10am – 8pm, 363 days a year. Handmade Candy being Made with a Panda Design Did you like this? Watch our other #Candylabs video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEqvwnlMRvA Buy our video crew a cofee: https://www.ko-fi.com/stereokroma With spectacular reception of our previous how to make traditional hard #candy video, we decided to return to Candy Labs for Round 2. An ever more disappearing art, these specialty candies are made by hand. Our video documents a roughly 3 hour process of one of their popular original designs, and is edited into a 20 minute in-depth episode about a day in the life of a candy maker and the techniques involved in making artisan candy. Follow Lin and Mei as they make an even more complex design: a #Panda. Using old fashion techniques, they transform a giant mass of sugar into tiny sweets - it’s tempting to say you may even need a microscope to see the little face, or at least really good glasses. These candies are made on-site at their store, hidden in a corner of downtown Montreal - see address below.
