National Geographic Documentary - Sea Monsters - Deep Ocean
Views: 142736 Yvonne R. Christopherso
Deep Sea Creatures [National Geographic Documentary 2017 HD] The Deep sea creature refers to organisms that live below the photic zone of the ocean. These creatures must survive in extremely harsh conditions, such as hundreds of bars of pressure, small amounts of oxygen, very little food, no sunlight, and constant, extreme cold. Most creatures have to depend on food floating down from above. These creatures live in very demanding environments, such as the abyssal or hadal zones, which, being thousands of meters below the surface, are almost completely devoid of light. The water is between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius and has low oxygen levels. Due to the depth, the pressure is between 20 and 1,000 bars. Creatures that live hundreds or even thousands of meters deep in the ocean have adapted to the high pressure, lack of light, and other factors. The depths of the ocean are festooned with the most nightmarish creatures imaginable. You might think you’re safe, because these critters live thousands of feet down in a cold dark abyss, but the vampire squid, which looks like a nightmare umbrella, and the frilled shark—a literal living fossil—will live on in the recesses of your mind long after you’ve clicked away. Enjoy these deep sea horrors and try to have a relaxing day afterward. ► NOTE : I'm a big fan of National Geographic and I just collect the best parts of National Geographic. I do not make money from National Geographic's Video. Thanks You very much

Fin Whale The fin whale is the second largest creature on Earth after the blue whale. It has been severely affected by commercial whaling and now it is rare to see one. If you have seen one, consider yourself lucky! They can grow as long as 89 feet (27 m) in length and can weigh between 40 to 80 tons! The maximum ever recorded weighed in at 114 tons!! They can live to be over 100 years old if left alone. The fin whale’s body is built for speed and it can even go faster than the fastest ocean steamship. It’s capable of speeds of up to 37 km/h but can go short bursts of even 47 km/h, earning it the nickname “greyhound of the sea”. Fin Whales have a very unique coloring with the right underside of their jaw, right lip, and the right side of their baleen being a yellowish-white, while the left-side is gray, making them look asymmetrical. Fun fact, fin whales and blue whales make the lowest frequency sounds of any animals. When they were first recorded by submarines, scientists thought they were tectonic plates grinding. Kind of makes you wonder about what is causing other mysterious ocean sounds! 9.) Portuguese Man of War While this is often considered a jellyfish, the Portuguese man-of-war is actually not an “it” but a “they”! It is made up of a colony of organisms called polyps that work together known as a siphonophore. While the tentacles can extend 165 feet (50 m), the average is about 30 feet (9 m) long. Still nothing to scoff at!! Also known as “the floating terror”, their body is between 5 inches to a foot wide (13 cm- 130 cm). They are usually found in groups of about a thousand or more, and have no independent means of movement. They either drift on the currents or catch the wind, so even though you should be super careful of jellyfish, they aren’t ever out to get you on purpose! The tentacles on a man-of-war are extremely venomous and very painful if you get stung but they are rarely deadly. The venom is typically used to paralyze their prey, such as small fish and other smaller creatures. Also keep in mind that a man-of-war does not need to be alive in order to give off a powerful sting, even if it has washed up on shore and looks dead, it can still sting you! The Portuguese man-of-war floats around the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Indian and Pacific. So keep an eye out if you are swimming around these areas! 8.) Giant Clam The giant clam is the largest living bivalve mollusk on earth. (Bivalve mollusks include clams, oysters, and mussels). Native to the warm waters of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, giant clams are capable of growing an average of 4 feet (1 m) in length and weighing close to 500 pounds (250 kg)! However, some species of clams have been known to grow as long as 6 feet. The large majority of a giant clam’s mass is in its shell, with the soft parts accounting for only approximately 10% of the weight. Giant clams are now endangered because they apparently are also quite delicious and have been hunted for centuries for its healthy protein. The giant clam has one chance to find its perfect home because once it chooses its spot, it stays there for the rest of its life. They can live up to 100 years or more, as long as they are in the wild. Most of the giant clams you see today have been raised in captivity and are really popular in large aquariums. Giant clams achieve their enormous proportions by consuming the sugars and proteins produced by the billions of algae that live in their tissues. This symbiotic relationship protects the algae and they are responsible for the unique coloration. No two giant clams are alike! 7.) Great White Shark According to National Geographic, great white sharks are the largest predatory fish in the world. They grow to an average of 15 feet (4.6 m) in length. However, there have been some who have grown to 20 feet (6 m) in length! In fact, the largest Great White Shark ever recorded in the wild was estimated to be 26 feet long, which is more than half the length of a basketball court. Combine this with a bunch of teeth, and this is why people get so scared. They are known to weigh up to 5,000 pounds (2268 kg). The heaviest Great White Shark ever recorded in the wild was estimated to weigh in at a whopping 7,328 pounds. . Check out these 10 sea monsters attacking a boat! This top 10 list of ocean creatures like whales and great white sharks attacking a ship shows some bizarre stories caught on camera! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "MYSTERIOUS Creatures Living At The BOTTOM Of The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/Efhjc-Gu508 Watch our "SECRETS Casinos DON'T Want You To Find Out!" video here: https://youtu.be/hAoABuvzOZM Watch our "RAREST And Most EXPENSIVE Cars In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/MtCnWSqqilg 10. Great White Shark If you’ve been on a boat out on the ocean, a Jaws attack has probably crossed your mind. Even if it’s just barely!! Then of course you rationalize that the chances of that happening are practically 0. Practically. That’s what Terry Selwood, a 73-year-old Australian fisherman learned in 2017, when a great white shark leapt out of the water, into his boat!! 9. An Eagle Ray Rays seem like beautiful, serene creatures - but they can be extremely dangerous, even if you’re on the relative safety of a large tourist boat. In 2011, Jenny Hausch had rented a 26-foot catamaran for her family to take a trip in Florida. Sounds really nice right? 8. Swordfish In 2017, Alan Pope, a British tourist, was on a boat trip getting ready to go snorkeling in Indonesia when everything went horribly wrong. Without any warning, a swordfish jumped out of the water and into the boat, and impaled his neck with its bill. The end snapped off, and left six inches of the sword still jabbed inside his neck, just millimeters from instantly killing him. 7. Sperm Whales The Gulf of Alaska is a prime fishing location, especially for those trying to catch black cod. In these waters, though, there is a much larger creature that also likes eating the fish- sperm whales. They are the ocean’s largest toothed predators, and while they are quite capable of catching food for themselves, they much prefer taking the easy route. 6. Giant Squid Mostly creatures of legend, giant squids are mentioned in many old mariners tales of dangers at sea. But they are rarely seen, let alone involved in attacking boats. So when a team of French sailors came face to face with one in 2003, they almost didn’t believe it!! 5. Bull Shark You might think that a great white shark would be the most problematic shark species to boats, but there’s another type that can be more aggressive, and more likely to risk an encounter. 4. Jellyfish Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can have the biggest effect, something that became ever so apparent in 2017 when Chinese scientists were investigating why their aircraft carriers were experiencing difficulties. They found that large swarms of Jellyfish were getting caught up in the propulsion systems! This would stop the ships dead in their tracks, or cause the engines to overheat and cause extreme damage. 3. Mako Shark This next story took place just last year, 2017 in Long Island, New York. A fishing charter boat was taking guests to the location where they find the widest variety of fish, when suddenly a Mako shark jumped onto the side of the boat. Unfortunately for the fish, it managed to get itself stuck in the handrail of the boat and, despite thrashing about, it couldn’t free itself. 2. Black Marlin Game fishing is a popular pastime for many enthusiasts, but when you’re chasing after some of the largest and most powerful marine creatures on earth, you have to be ready for the unpredictable. Again last year, things went very wrong indeed for a fishing boat off the coast of Panama. They had caught a black marlin, a species that can weight up to 1500 pounds and reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. 1. Killer Whale If you’ve ever watched a nature documentary that’s featured Killer Whales, you’ll be all too familiar how organised and clever they can be. Pods work together to catch prey, and even tilt ice flows to trap seals. When they turn these skills towards human activity, the results can be frightening. Here are 5 Extremely Creepy Deep Sea Creatures Click Here To Subscribe! http://bit.ly/EliteFacts List : 5. The Ningen This creature from the depths of the ocean may be just about the creepiest thing you could ever see. The reason for this, is that it looks just like a human even having strange limbs that resemble arms and legs. The name Ningen is actually human in Japanese. However, there is no need to panic and worry that the world will be taken over by strange alien sea creatures, because there has never been any official sightings of this little beastie and general opinion is that it’s just a freaky urban myth much like the mermaid. 4. Mantis Shrimp This rainbow hued little creature is not as nice as it looks. It is actually extremely clever and horribly dangerous. One of its main talents is being able to see colours that far surpass even the furthest imagination of humans. As well as, it is an efficient killing machine, it has two appendages at the front of its body which can lash out so powerfully that they cause the water surrounding the creature to reach boiling point! So, even the clever prey that have managed to avoid the physical attack will be rendered defenceless by the boiling water. 3. Pelican Eel Eel’s in general are quite creepy looking, but this one has taken it to another level. This slippery character is basically just a huge mouth with a tail attached. The mouth itself is absolutely terrifying, it unhinges so that its owner can catch prey that is twice its size. The chosen prey is then stored in a pouch within the lower jaw. However, the tail can be just as weird as it possesses a small light producing organ that is called a photophore and this gives off an eerie pink glow. 2. Humpback Anglerfish The female of this species most certainly has a licence to kill. She uses her feminine charm which comes in the form of a bioluminescent lure dangling over her forehead to draw in prey that she can destroy with her rows of ferocious teeth. 1. Predatory Tunicate This is basically a Venus Fly Trap that lives underwater. They are almost completely translucent and they stick themselves to the sea floor and wait patiently for a tasty meal to come along. Once an unsuspecting critter falls for the trap the creatures snap their hoods shut until they’ve had their fill. Building the better shark still isn't a good idea in Deep Blue Sea 2, the long-awaited sequel to the hit theatrical thriller coming this spring from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The feature-length film arrives on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD and Digital starting April 17, 2018. In Deep Blue Sea 2, shark conservationist Dr. Misty Calhoun (Danielle Savre) is invited to consult on a new, top secret project run by pharmaceutical billionaire Carl Durant (Michael Beach). She believes the project, performed at a remote, sea-based facility, focuses on extracting shark antibodies to help work toward cures for human diseases. However, Dr. Calhoun is shocked to learn that the company is using unpredictable bull sharks as its test subjects, and Durant has bio-engineered a shiver of highly intelligent, super-aggressive bull sharks. When science meddles with the time-tested process of nature and nurture, the outcome can be deadly. Deep Blue Sea 2 will be available on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack ($24.98 SRP) and DVD ($19.98 SRP), as well as Digital. The Blu-ray™ Combo Pack features the film in hi-definition, a standard definition DVD and a digital version of the film. The DVD features the movie in standard definition. Deep Blue Sea 2 is rated R for creature violence and gore, and language.

Did you know Colossal Squids can grow up to 50 ft in length? From the mysterious Mariana Trench shark to creepy fish that look human, these are the 23 Biggest Deep Sea Mysteries ! #10 … Terrible Claw Lobster -- This tiny creature was discovered in 2007, in the deep ocean off the Philippine coast. Hardly anything is known about them yet, except they have two different sizes of knife and claw. The one longer claw is actually as long as the creature’s body itself. #9 … Angler Fish -- This deep-sea creature is fairly well known for a deep sea denizen. So what’s it’s angle? The fish has an appendage growing out of its forehead that has a light on the tip. It uses this to attract prey, then devours them with its gaping mouth. #8 … Sulfur Lake -- Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, this lake is notable for two features: It’s actually located underwater and it’s made entirely of molten sulfur. This area is teeming with creatures that seem uniquely designed for this location, like crabs and shrimp. #7 … Vampire Squid -- This bizarre creature doesn’t have fangs but it can put on a light show. It produces its own light through spots on its side and through glowing tentacle tips. When threatened, the Vampire Squid will eject an ink that glows. #6 … Frilled Shark -- Because they’ve been around so long, this animal is sometimes referred to as a living fossil because it’s changed so little over millions of years. Known for a mouth filled with 300 backward-facing, trident-shaped teeth aligned in 25 rows, it can consume prey half as long as its body. It prefers depths around 4200 feet, so it’s rarely seen. But one was captured in Japan in 2007. #5 … Alaskan Whale Deaths -- 30 whales beached themselves on Alaskan shores in 2015, and 29 of them were fin whales. Toxic algae was ruled out as the cause of death, since no other species stranded themselves on shore. Experts believe that all the whales died at the same time, but the mystery of this mass whale death still remains unsolved. A full-fledged investigation is expected to take years to complete. #4 … Milky Seas -- Sailors in the past told stories of encountering “milky, glowing waters”. In 1995, a British merchant ship documented that the waters appeared pale and milky-white. Scientists have determined that the cause of the glow is luminous bacteria. The bacteria starts lighting up in order to attract fish. Once the bacteria is ingested, the bacteria can live inside the animals. #3 … Mariana Trench Mystery Shark -- It’s a misnomer because footage of this shark was actually taken in Suruga (soo-gear-uh) Bay in Japan. And estimates that it measured 60-feet long turned out to be false, as was the notion it could be a Megalodon. It’s thought that this is either a six gill shark, which can grow up to 25 feet … or a Pacific sleeper shark, which can survive at depths as low as 9,000 feet. #2 … Giant Oar fish -- This creature can reach lengths up to 56 feet, and weigh up to 600 pounds. These creatures are largely unknown, but are thought to have been the reason for many sightings of sea serpents. Living in deep waters, Oar fish don’t spend much time on the surface. But in 2013, two of the animals made news when they washed ashore on California beaches. Scientists think that strong currents pushed the fish toward shore and they were battered to death by swells. #1 … Colossal Squids -- They can grow to nearly 50 feet long with 10 arms and eyes over a foot in diameter. These deep sea dwelling creatures are the largest known invertebrate in the world. Not a whole lot is known about them, but evidence suggests they’re loners and eat an enormous quantity of large fish. The largest colossal squid ever captured really lived up to its name: It weighed almost 1,100 pounds and was caught in New Zealand in 2007. What are the biggest creatures in the world? If you wanna find the true giants of this planet, you’ll need to head into the ocean. Without the force of gravity pulling them down, marine animals can reach unimaginable sizes. TIMESTAMPS: The Giant Clam 1:37 The Giant Spider Crab 2:41 The Great White Shark 3:45 The Whale Shark 4:52 The Fin Whale 5:49 The Lion’s Mane Jellyfish 6:39 The Blue Whale 7:53 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - Giant Clams are the largest mollusks in the world. They can grow around 4 feet in length and weigh more than 440 pounds. - The giant spider crab lives in the waters near Japan. Their legs reach about 11.5 feet from claw to claw and the body can be around 14.5 inches in diameter, which is pretty small compared to their long long limbs. - The great white gets its name from its distinct white belly under its grey body. As for the “great” part, that’s simply because some of them can grow over 20 feet long! As for your average great white shark, it’s usually about 15 feet in length, making it the largest predatory fish in the world. - The whale sharks are covered in white spots that have a unique design for each individual shark. The whale shark ranges in size from 18 to 32.8 feet and can weigh about 20.6 tons. - The fin whale can get up to 85 feet long. That’s the length of two school buses! It can weigh up to 75 tons, which is about as much as a space shuttle! - The lion’s mane jellyfish can get up to 120 feet long, putting the lion’s mane jellyfish among the ranks of the world’s longest animals and certainly the largest jellyfish species. It likes to float in the open ocean, where it feeds on zooplankton, small crustaceans, fish, and even other types of jellyfish. - The blue whale is the largest animal this planet as ever seen, and it still swims the oceans today. They range from 82 feet to 105 feet in length and weigh up to a massive 200 tons. That’s as much as an empty Boeing 747! (CC BY-SA 2.0) - A size comparison of a killer whale, blue whale, a Pliosaur (Predator X), and a human diver., or Sponga, Bergens Tidende (CC BY-SA 2.0) - The huge pliosaur fossils had to be cast in plaster before being removed from the Svalbard site., Jørn Hurum/NHM/UiO (CC BY-SA 2.0) List of most terrifying sea monsters ever: 9. Predator X Predator X is the most powerful marine reptile ever discovered. Over 15 meters long, and weighing about 4 tons, it was twice as big as most Jurassic predators. The giant reptile roamed the seas about 150 million years ago and was officially classified as a new species. Now known as Pliosaurus funkei, it had a massive 2m skull with a bite four times as powerful as a Tyrannosaurus rex. (Although I prefer the name Predator X). Studies of the brain cavity of Predator X has revealed that its brain was actually similar to the much smaller great white shark?. In 2006, scientists found two massive pliosaur skeletons in Norway. The giant creatures, looked slightly different from other pliosaurs discovered in England and France over the last century and a half. The pliosaur family had short necks and four large, paddle-shaped limbs like a turtle that allowed them to move up to 5m per second. The newly discovered funkei species likely lived closer to 145 million years ago and ate plesiosaurs, related long-necked, small-headed reptiles. The new analysis shows P. funkei had longer front paddles than other pliosaurs, and different teeth. This predator is still bigger than the largest living apex predator, the whale, which tops out at about 9m (30 ft) long. 8. Plesiosaurs Plesiosaurs were a group of marine reptiles, or dinosaurs-that-weren’t-actually-dinosaurs but lived at the same time during the Jurassic Period. It had a tiny head and a long neck, paddle flippers, and a tail. Even though it was smaller than Predator X, Its mouth was full of needle-like teeth pointing inward, a perfect death trap for prey and for ripping flesh. In 1987 a plesiosaur fossil was discovered with the bones of an embryo in its abdomen, proving that the animal gave birth to live young. This creature seems to have somehow given rise to the Loch Ness Monster as the physical description is very similar. Plesiosaurs would swallow stones weighing about 5 pounds (2.2kg) to help them digest their prey. If there was one plesiosaur you needed to watch out for, it was Liopleurodon (lye plur i dun). This carnivorous beast could weigh over 3,500 pounds and reach over 30 feet in length, including jaws that are believed to be 10 feet alone, complete, of course, with a very wide jaw and several rows of razor-sharp teeth. Their bodies consisted of a unique, paddle design for limbs, which has been tested and proven on small swimming robots that the Liopleurodon would not have been super fast they were terrifyingly agile. Most likely they hunted similar to the crocodiles of today, with short and fast burst attacks. So that makes them just perfect for any underwater haunted...aquarium. 7. Giant Sea Scorpion (Jaekelopterus rhenaniae) Since there is no way I can pronounce this we'll just call this one the Giant Sea Scorpion. Larger than a human and about the size of a crocodile (2.5m), the 390-million-year-old sea scorpion was the top predator of its day. This was one of the two largest arthropods to have ever lived, reaching a length of over 8 feet of armored, clawed horror. Most of us freak out at the thought of a tarantula, so it’s easy to imagine screaming like a banshee if you ever swam by one of these. A huge fossilized spiky claw discovered in Germany in 2007 measured 18 inches (46 cm). We've known about super sized insects for years now but it wasn't until this discovery that scientists realized just how big some of these creepy crawlies could get. The next biggest fossil arthropods were massive millipedes that grew more than 2 meters (6.5 feet) long, 6. Basilosaurus The Basilosaurus’ name and appearance make it seem like an ancient reptile, but it’s actually a blood-thirsty ancestor of today’s whales. It's ironic given that its name means “King Lizard,” but that is because when it was discovered by Richard Owen in 1834, it was thought be a reptile. It wasn't until over 10 years later that he discovered it was actually a mammal and tried to rename it the Zeuglodon, meaning Yoke Tooth, but that didn’t catch on.

FILM DESCRIPTION: Although mako sharks are among the fastest and deadliest predators in the ocean, they're not as smart as humans -- at least, they weren't. However, Dr. Susan McAlester (Saffron Burrows) has been using mako sharks as her test subjects for research on the regeneration of human brain tissues. McAlester has altered the DNA of several sharks, raising them close to the level of human intelligence; the sharks have also become faster and stronger in the process. While these DNA experiments have yielded fascinating results, they're also of questionable ethics and legality, earning her the distrust of several members of her crew, including shark authority Carter Blake (Thomas Jane and cook "Preacher" Dudley (LL Cool J). The financial backers of these experiments have also expressed skepticism, so when McAlester is ready to perform some major tests, financier Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson) arrives for the occasion. McAlester and her team are delicately extracting brain tissue from one of the altered makos when the animal regains consciousness - and becomes very angry. The shark not only attacks the researchers but also damages the floating lab, leaving the crew aboard a literally sinking ship, with the makos eager to go a few rounds CREDITS: TM & © Warner Bros. The ocean is vast and full of things we as humans have yet to discover. Put on your scuba suits, this one’s one’s going to be quite the ride. Hopefully, strange noises, odd creatures, and mysterious structures don’t scare you. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 5. Colossal Squid Remember that small vampire squid? Yeah, take that and then make it like a million times bigger. Okay, not a million, but from this picture of one dried up on the shore, you understand. No to be confused with the giant squid, the colossal squid differs in that their tentacles have little hooks on them. They’re similar in length, though colossal squid are said to be stouter and heavier. These rare and terrifying creatures are a result of a phenomenon that is known as abyssal gigantism, where invertebrates in the deep sea are much larger in size so as to adapt to the smaller portions of food sources. Colossal squid have been seen to grow up to 46 ft long, weighing up to 1,650 pounds. Also, their eyes are said to be the biggest in the whole of the animal kingdom, their eyeballs measuring up to 11 inches in diameter. 4. USS Saratoga Admittedly, this photo looks terrifying, though do not be alarmed too much by the sight of it. What you see before you is the anchor hawse hole that was once part of the USS Saratoga. This gigantic artifact was discovered in the Bikini Atoll in Micronesia, were many a seacraft have met their demise. The anchor hawse hole has been sunken in the water for so long that it was naturally taken over by the aquatic environment, turning into something that is initially unrecognizable. 3. Mariana Trench Mystery Shark Oh, so you thought that that great white shark cannibal was the most of your worries as far as sharks go? Well think again, because something even more mysterious than that 16 foot shark eating shark is the Mariana Trench Mystery Shark. Footage of this elusive shark was apparently captured by marine biologists from Japan. The footage was concluded to have been taken from Suruga Bay in Japan. To give you some context, here’s how an average person measures up to more common sharks. And that biggest one is the mystery shark. There’s even been speculation that this shark may in fact be a megalodon, a species that’s said to have been extinct for millions of years. 2. The Bloop It might not be the most epic or mysterious sounding of titles, but its nomenclature doesn’t make it any less intriguing once you hear what The Bloop is. In the year 1997, a bloop, or low frequency underwater sound was detected in the south Pacific Ocean by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The sound was said to be powerful, at and was at first likened to the sound icequakes that take place in icebergs make. About 5 years later, it was then said to be more similar to a marine animal--though this was again disputed and the ice theory was considered to be conclusive. But within the scramble to figure out what the sound was, there were people saying perhaps == was real after all. Underwater Waterfall This is definitely a real picture of a real place--not something out of a fantasy land. This is the underwater waterfall located in the Denmark Strait. It is the largest underwater waterfall in the world, and is also known as the Denmark Strait Cataract or the North Atlantic Circulation Pump. It can be found on the western side of the strait located in the Atlantic Ocean and is quite the sight to see indeed. It’s as if the earth was opened and is swallowing the surface world whole--which is a nice thought. The waterfall measures up to 11,500 ft deep and was formed due to varying temperatures between the eastern and western water masses. The flow rate is over 175 million cubic ft per second and is said to be the most voluminous water fall in the world.

Measuring the Greatest Ocean Depth The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench is the deepest known point in Earth's oceans. In 2010 the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping measured the depth of the Challenger Deep at 10,994 meters (36,070 feet) below sea level with an estimated vertical accuracy of ± 40 meters. If Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth, were placed at this location it would be covered by over one mile of water. The first depth measurements in the Mariana Trench were made by the British survey ship HMS Challenger, which was used by the Royal Navy in 1875 to conduct research in the trench. The greatest depth that they recorded at that time was 8,184 meters (26,850 feet). In 1951, another Royal Navy vessel, also named the "HMS Challenger," returned to the area for additional measurements. They discovered an even deeper location with a depth of 10,900 meters (35,760 feet) determined by echo sounding. The Challenger Deep was named after the Royal Navy vessel that made these measurements. In 2009, sonar mapping done by researchers aboard the RV Kilo Moana, operated by the University of Hawaii, determined the depth to be 10,971 meters (35,994 feet) with a potential error of ± 22 meters. The most recent measurement, done in 2010, is the 10,994 meter ( ± 40 meter accuracy) depth reported at the top of this article, measured by the United States Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping.
