For DBAs looking to streamline the process of cloning a database for development and test efforts, the Oracle Snap Management Utility (SMU) for Oracle Database may help solve that need. The SMU software coordinates storage cloning from the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance with the process to mount the new clone to a database host from a single interface. Take cloning for development databases from weeks to minutes and accelerate dev/test with SMU. Scott Ledbetter, Oracle Application Integration Engineer, shows how to easily clone an Oracle database instance using the Oracle Snap Manager Utility for Oracle Database. Held on August 28 2018 Click on SHOW MORE for video highlights! In our August session, Mark Scardina welcomed Barry Gleeson who was responsible for architecting the Oracle Database Quality of Service Management feature that provides operational runtime autonomous performance management of Oracle RAC databases. Questions ranged across the full gambit of design, functionality and best practices. 01:55 - What is Oracle’s goal in developing QoS Management? 03:02 - What collection of servers and databases does a QoS Management instance manage? 04:10 - How does QoS Management define and measure Response Times? 05:40 - What types of actions does QoSM recommend to help maintain Response Time Objectives when there is a load surge? 10:17 - What actions will QoSM recommend when load is so large that all Response Time Objectives cannot be met at the same time? 12:10 - What does QoSM do when a Response Time problem is detected, but none of the available Actions helps or is appropriate? 15:20 - Since you can rank workloads how can I manage them when their rankings change – ex: weekdays and weekends? 18:32 - Can these policies be switched on a schedule automatically? 19:15 - What type of user interfaces does QoS Management support? 21:00 - What QoS Management functionality is in Oracle Enterprise Manager? 23:17 - Is having QoSM managing the DB resources the only benefit of this product? 31:50 - What is the best practice to make use of QoSM modes? 36:22 - Does QoS Management require any specific database deployment? 38:10 - For QoS, we are evaluated SQL that is already running. Is there a way to prevent new SQL from being fired if system is already overloaded? 39:55 - How about using a (custom defined) function to perform consumer group mapping? 42:22 - The problem we are facing is the module/action are dynamic generated. Can we use a custom defined function to generate the list? 44:28 - What if module and action are from URL endpoint? 43:44 - Does QoSM support wildcard matches, more advance mapping like regexp or even from a table that I can provide the list? 46:45 - Which versions of Oracle databases does QoS Management support? 48:15 - Can you also cover new feature QoS (ORM) added in 18c before we end today? 49:50 - How does QoS Management specifically support classifying requests into Performance Classes? 50:15 - What is the overhead of using QoS Management? 52:38 - How do I change service during a session? 54:51 - Does QoS Management negatively affect an application’s availability? 56:00 - What happens should the QoS Management Server fail? 57:18 - Are there any limitations on the types of applications that Oracle QoS Management can measure and monitor? 59:18 - Are there any limitations on the types of workloads that Oracle QoS Management can manage? Learn more about connecting to databases with R: https://www.datacamp.com/courses/importing-data-in-r-part-2 Welcome to part two of importing data in R! The previous course dealt with accessing data stored in flat files or excel files. In a professional setting, you'll also encounter data stored in relational databases. In this video, I'll briefly talk about what a relational database is and then I'll explain how you can connect to it. In the next video, I'll explain how you can import data from it! So, what's a relational database? There's no better way to show this than with an example. Take this database, called company. It contains three tables, employees, products and sales. Like a flat file, information is displayed in a table format. The employees table has 5 records and three fields, namely id, name and started_at. The id here serves as a unique key for each row or record. Next, the products table contains the details on four products. We're dealing with data from a telecom company that's selling both with and without a contract. Also here, each product has an identifier. Finally, there's the sales table. It lists what products were sold by who, when and for what price. Notice here that the ids in employee_id and product_id correspond to the ids that you can find in the employees and products table respectively. The third sale for example, was done by the employee with id 6, so Julie. She sold the product with id 9, so the Biz Unlimited contract. These relations make this database very powerful. You only store all necessary information once in nicely separated tables, but can connect the dots between different records to model what's happening. How the data in a relational database is stored and shuffled around when you make adaptations, depends on the so-called database management system, or DBMS you're using. Open-source implementations such as MySQL, postgreSQL and SQLite are very popular, but there are also proprietary implementations such as Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL server. Practically all of these implementations use SQL, or sequel, as the language for querying and maintaining the database. SQL stands for Structured Query Language. Depending on the type of database you want to connect to, you'll have to use different packages. Suppose the company database I introduced before is a MySQL database. This means you'll need the RMySQL package. For postgreSQL you'll need RpostgreSQL, for Oracle, you'll use ROracle and so on. How you interact with the database, so which R functions you use to access and manipulate the database, is specified in another R package called DBI. In more technical terms, DBI is an interface, and RMySQL is the implementation. Let's install the RMySQL package, which automatically installs the DBI package as well. Loading only the DBI package will be enough to get started. The first step is creating a connection to the remote MySQL database. You do this with dbConnect(), as follows. The first argument specifies the driver that you will use to connect to the MySQL database. It sure looks a bit strange, but the MySQL() function from the RMySQL package simply constructs a driver for us that dbConnect can use. Next, you have to specify the database name, where the database is hosted, through which port you want to connect, and finally the credentials to authenticate yourself. This is an actual database that we're hosting, so you can try these commands yourself! The result of the dbConnect call, con, is a DBI connection object. You'll need to pass this object to whatever function you're using to interact with the database. Before we do that, let's get familiar with this connection object in the exercises!
