Oracle tutorial : Pseudo columns in Oracle PL SQL (pseudo column)

07:56
Oracle tutorial : Pseudo columns in Oracle PL SQL ( pseudocolumn ) oracle tutorial for beginners rownum in oracle This video will show you what is Pseudo columns in Oracle PL SQL. Pseudo columns are likes ROWNUM, ROENUM, ROWID, NEXTVAL,SYSDTAE , USER etc. pseudocolumn examples Oracle tutorial : Pseudo columns in oracle Oracle supports several special-purpose data elements that are not actually contained in a table, but are available for use in SQL statements. Here is a partial list of pseudo-columns in Oracle a)CURRVAL : When using Oracle SEQUENCE values, the pseudo-column CURRVAL returns the current value of the sequence. for example: schema.sequence_name.CURRVAL b)NEXTVAL :When using Oracle SEQUENCE values, the pseudo-column NEXTVAL returns the next value of the sequence and causes the sequence to increment by one. for example: schema.sequence_name.NEXTVAL c)ROWNUM:ROWNUM returns a number indicating the order in which a row was selected from a table. d)ROWID: ROWID returns the rowid (binary address) of a row in a database table. e)USER :This pseudo-column will always contain the Oracle username under which you are connected to the database. f)SYSDATE:This pseudo-column will contain the current date and time. This column is a standard Oracle DATE datatype. The value represents the current time on the server not the client. SQL Tutorial - Sequence Objects

22:06
This video will teach you how to create sequence objects with working examples, within SQL Server, we also look at the benefits of sequence objects and some of the differences between a sequence object and identity. CREATE SEQUENCE 'name' AS 'data type' START WITH 'value' INCREMENT BY 'value' MINVALUE 'value' (optional – will default to data type range) MAXVALUE 'value' (optional – will default to data type range) CYCLE? (optional – will default to NO CYCLE) How to find details of sequence objects within the database: sys.sequences – will show all information regarding sequence objects including current value How to restart the value of a sequence object: ALTER SEQUENCE 'name' RESTART WITH 'value' How to drop a sequence: DROP SEQUENCE 'name' (cannot drop a sequence if it is in use!) How to generate the next value for a sequence: SELECT NEXT VALUE FOR 'name' Sequences are covered in the Microsoft Exam – Querying SQL Server (70-461) 2012 / 2014. SQL Statements used below: CREATE SEQUENCE seq_test AS TINYINT START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1 MINVALUE 1 MAXVALUE 100 CYCLE CREATE TABLE Food_Orders ( Id TINYINT DEFAULT NEXT VALUE FOR seq_test , [Date] DATETIME2 , Summary VARCHAR(100) ) CREATE TABLE Food_Orders_2 ( Id TINYINT DEFAULT NEXT VALUE FOR seq_test , [Date] DATETIME2 , Summary VARCHAR(100) ) -- loop to insert data to test sequence DECLARE @N TINYINT = 1 WHILE @N 'less than' 110 BEGIN INSERT INTO Food_Orders([Date], Summary) VALUES (CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, 'Burger and Chips') INSERT INTO Food_Orders_2([Date], Summary) VALUES (CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, 'Burger and Chips') SET @N = @N + 1 END SELECT NEXT VALUE FOR seq_test ALTER SEQUENCE seq_test RESTART WITH 1 DROP SEQUENCE seq_test CREATE SEQUENCE seq_new AS INT START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY -1 SELECT NEXT VALUE FOR seq_new SQL errors covered: The sequence object 'name' has reached its minimum or maximum value. Restart the sequence object to allow new values to be generated Cannot DROP SEQUENCE 'name' because it is being referenced by object 'name'

Sequence object in SQL Server 2012

create sequence in sql server In this video we will discuss sequence object in SQL Server. Sequence object Introduced in SQL Server 2012 Generates sequence of numeric values in an ascending or descending order Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/sequence-object-in-sql-server-2012.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/sequence-object-in-sql-server-2012_26.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists Creating the Incrementing Sequence : The following code create a Sequence object that starts with 1 and increments by 1 CREATE SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] AS INT START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1 Generating the Next Sequence Value : Now we have a sequence object created. To generate the sequence value use NEXT VALUE FOR clause SELECT NEXT VALUE FOR [dbo].[SequenceObject] Output : 1 Every time you execute the above query the sequence value will be incremented by 1. I executed the above query 5 times, so the current sequence value is 5. Retrieving the current sequence value : If you want to see what the current Sequence value before generating the next, use sys.sequences SELECT * FROM sys.sequences WHERE name = 'SequenceObject' Alter the Sequence object to reset the sequence value : ALTER SEQUENCE [SequenceObject] RESTART WITH 1 Select the next sequence value to make sure the value starts from 1 SELECT NEXT VALUE FOR [dbo].[SequenceObject] Using sequence value in an INSERT query : CREATE TABLE Employees ( Id INT PRIMARY KEY, Name NVARCHAR(50), Gender NVARCHAR(10) ) -- Generate and insert Sequence values INSERT INTO Employees VALUES (NEXT VALUE for [dbo].[SequenceObject], 'Ben', 'Male') INSERT INTO Employees VALUES (NEXT VALUE for [dbo].[SequenceObject], 'Sara', 'Female') -- Select the data from the table SELECT * FROM Employees Creating the decrementing Sequence : The following code create a Sequence object that starts with 100 and decrements by 1 CREATE SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] AS INT START WITH 100 INCREMENT BY -1 Specifying MIN and MAX values for the sequence : Use the MINVALUE and MAXVALUE arguments to specify the MIN and MAX values respectively. Step 1 : Create the Sequence object CREATE SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] START WITH 100 INCREMENT BY 10 MINVALUE 100 MAXVALUE 150 Step 2 : Retrieve the next sequence value. The sequence value starts at 100. Every time we call NEXT VALUE, the value will be incremented by 10. SELECT NEXT VALUE FOR [dbo].[SequenceObject] If you call NEXT VALUE, when the value reaches 150 (MAXVALUE), you will get the following error The sequence object 'SequenceObject' has reached its minimum or maximum value. Restart the sequence object to allow new values to be generated. Recycling Sequence values : When the sequence object has reached it's maximum value, and if you want to restart from the minimum value, set CYCLE option ALTER SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] INCREMENT BY 10 MINVALUE 100 MAXVALUE 150 CYCLE At this point, whe the sequence object has reached it's maximum value, and if you ask for the NEXT VALUE, sequence object starts from the minimum value again which in this case is 100. To improve performance, the Sequence object values can be cached using the CACHE option. When the values are cached they are read from the memory instead of from the disk, which improves the performance. When the cache option is specified you can also specify the size of th cache , that is the number of values to cache. The following example, creates the sequence object with 10 values cached. When the 11th value is requested, the next 10 values will be cached again. CREATE SEQUENCE [dbo].[SequenceObject] START WITH 1 INCREMENT BY 1 CACHE 10 Using SQL Server Graphical User Interface (GUI) to create the sequence object : 1. Expand the database folder 2. Expand Programmability folder 3. Right click on Sequences folder 4. Select New Sequence Next video : Difference between SEQUENCE and IDENTITY in SQL Server

Oracle CURRENT_DATE Function

01:54
https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-date-functions/ The Oracle CURRENT_DATE function is used to return the current date in the session timezone. The session timezone is the timezone that the current user is logging in from. This can be different from the database’s timezone. The syntax of the CURRENT_DATE function is: CURRENT_DATE No parameters are needed - just the function name. The function returns a DATE data type, and it includes hours, minutes, and seconds. This is good to know because the default display format for DATE does not include the time component, and it can be easy to forget. It’s different to the SYSDATE function as SYSDATE returns the date in the database timezone, and CURRENT_DATE returns the date in the session time zone. So, if I’m logging in from Melbourne, Australia, and the database is in London, England, then the CURRENT_DATE will return a date and time that’s 10 hours ahead of SYSDATE. It may be on the same day, or it could be a different day, depending on when I run the function. You can perform arithmetic on this function just like any other date value (e.g. CURRENT_DATE - 7 for 7 days ago). For more information about the Oracle CURRENT_DATE function, including all of the SQL shown in this video and the examples, read the related article here: https://www.databasestar.com/oracle-date-functions/

Difference between rows and range

05:52
range vs rows in sql server difference between rows clause and range clause in sql server range clause vs rows clause in sql server sql server running total query running total example in sql server In this video we will discuss the difference between rows and range in SQL Server. This is continuation to Part 116. Please watch Part 116 from SQL Server tutorial before proceeding. Let us understand the difference with an example. We will use the following Employees table in this demo. SQL Script to create the Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 1000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 2000) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 3000) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 5000) Go Calculate the running total of Salary and display it against every employee row The following query calculates the running total. We have not specified an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees So the above query is using the default value which is RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW This means the above query can be re-written using an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause as shown below. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees We can also achieve the same result, by replacing RANGE with ROWS SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees What is the difference between ROWS and RANGE To understand the difference we need some duplicate values for the Salary column in the Employees table. Execute the following UPDATE script to introduce duplicate values in the Salary column Update Employees set Salary = 1000 where Id = 2 Update Employees set Salary = 3000 where Id = 4 Go Now execute the following query. Notice that we get the running total as expected. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees The following query uses RANGE instead of ROWS SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees Notice we don't get the running total as expected. So, the main difference between ROWS and RANGE is in the way duplicate rows are treated. ROWS treat duplicates as distinct values, where as RANGE treats them as a single entity. All together side by side. The following query shows how running total changes 1. When no value is specified for ROWS or RANGE clause 2. When RANGE clause is used explicitly with it's default value 3. When ROWS clause is used instead of RANGE clause SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary) AS [Default], SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS [Range], SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS [Rows] FROM Employees Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/difference-between-rows-and-range.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/difference-between-rows-and-range_8.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

How to generate primary keys with JPA and Hibernate

09:08
Today, I will show you how to generate unique primary key values with JPA and Hibernate. But before we start, I want to know how you get the primary key values in your application? Do you use natural keys or UUIDs or do you generate technical IDs? Please post a comment below and tell me about it. I prefer to generate simple, numerical, technical IDs like you can see in the following code snippet instead of using natural keys which often require the combination of multiple attributes. Technical IDs are easier to manage and all involved systems, mainly the database and Hibernate, can index them very efficiently. This allows you to focus on the business logic of your application and avoids performance issues. If you like this video, please give me your thumbs up and share it with your friends and co-workers. The following are the steps required to enable archive log mode on an Oracle 10g or 11g database. Verify the database log mode. [email protected] sqlplus / as sysdba SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.1.0 Production on Thu Apr 8 12:02:52 2010 Copyright 1982, 2009, Oracle. All rights reserved. Note that Archive destination is USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST. You can determine the path by looking at the parameter RECOVERY_FILE_DEST. SQL show parameter recovery_file_dest NAME TYPE VALUE ------------------------------------ ----------- ------------------------------ db_recovery_file_dest string /u01/app/oracle/flash_recovery _area db_recovery_file_dest_size big integer 3852M SQL By default, archive logs will be written to the flash recovery area. If you do not want to write archive logs to the flash recovery area you can set the parameter LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n to the location in which you wish to write archive logs. SQL alter system set log_archive_dest_1='LOCATION=/u02/app/oracle/oradata/orcl/arch' scope = both; System altered. SQL archive log list; Database log mode No Archive Mode Automatic archival Disabled Archive destination /u02/app/oracle/oradata/orcl/arch Oldest online log sequence 25 Current log sequence 27 SQL Now we shutdown the database and bring it backup in mount mode. Notice that Automatic archive is enabled as well. In Oracle 9i an earlier another parameter needed to be set in order to enable automatic archiving. This in no longer the case in 10g and 11g as automatic archiving is enabled when the database is placed in archive log mode. You can switch to the log file to see that an archive is written to archive log location. SQL alter system switch logfile; System altered. This tutorial series is part of SQL expert exam certification training. if you are preparing for SQL certification you can use my tutorials. This SQL Tutorial is a part of free training. We can also say that SQL tables are kind of data structure which are used by database for efficient storage of data. To create a table in our database we use SQL CREATE TABLE command. SQL CREATE TABLE is a type of DATA DEFINITION LANGUAGE also known as DDL. To Create a table in your schema you will require CREATE TABLE system privilege. In our future videos we will see what are system and object privileges and how to grant them to a user. Today for this video we will be using Sample schema HR which already has all the necessary privileges. Ohk Let's see the syntax. CREATE TABLE table name ( column name1 Data-Type(size), column name2 Data-Type(size), ..... ); CREATE TABLE is an oracle reserved word or say an Oracle key word whereas There are 3 different ways of creating a table in Oracle database. Creating a table using Command Line Interface (CLI) in Oracle database For demonstrating how to create table in oracle database using CLI, I'll be using Command prompt. Thats how we create table using command prompt. you can check your table structure by DESCRIBE command for that just write DESC and your table name. Like this Another way of creating a table is by using Graphic user interface (GUI) in Oracle database To demonstrate how to create table using GUI we will use SQL developer. Lets open our SQL developer I am connected to HR schema if you do not know how to create a connection to database using SQL developer please watch my oracle database tutorial 4 that explains database connectivity using SQL developer and command prompt. Link for this video is in the description below. So lets create a table. Creating a table using SQL developer is very easy we do not have to fire any query here. Let's start First of all right click on your connection in which you want to create a table and choose schema browser. This will open a separate schema browser pane or you can expend your connection by clicking this + sign and then right click on table and choose New Table. However I prefer working with schema browser so let's skip to schema browser pane here from the first drop-down list you can choose connection name and in the second drop down list you can choose what database objects you want to work with we want to create a table thus I'll choose table and then click this arrow here and choose option for new table Ok we have created a table wizard first of all give a unique name to your table and add some column as well. For this, click the green plus button. Now we already have a column so give it some name. Also choose a datatype from the list and specify any size you can check this not null column if in case you want to make this a mandatory column you can also specify default value and constraint If you want to make this column a primary key you can click here In my future video i'll show you what are these constraints and different ways of applying them on a column in a table. for this video we will concentrate on create table only so when you are done with all your columns click ok Thats your table You can double click on your table here and can see its structure. Thats it

Sequence Surveyor: Leveraging Overview for Scalable Whole Genome Alignment

04:56
Software is available at: http://graphics.cs.wisc.edu/Vis/SequenceSurveyor/ In this video, we introduce overview visualization tools for large-scale multiple genome alignment data. Genome alignment visualization and, more generally, sequence alignment visualization are an important tool for understanding genomic sequence data. As sequencing techniques improve and more data become available, greater demand is being placed on visualization tools to scale to the size of these new datasets. When viewing such large data, we necessarily cannot convey details, rather we specifically design overview tools to help elucidate large-scale patterns. Perceptual science, signal processing theory, and generality provide a framework for the design of such visualizations that can scale well beyond current approaches. We present Sequence Surveyor, a prototype that embodies these ideas for scalable multiple whole-genome alignment overview visualization. Sequence Surveyor visualizes sequences in parallel, displaying data using variable color, position, and aggregation encodings. We demonstrate how perceptual science can inform the design of visualization techniques that remain visually manageable at scale and how signal processing concepts can inform aggregation schemes that highlight global trends, outliers, and overall data distributions as the problem scales. These techniques allow us to visualize alignments with over 100 whole bacterial-sized genomes.
