Crete Island - Best Places to Visit in Greece HD
The 3-minute slideshow, with background music, presents 20 of the best places in Crete, the largest Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea. Our selection consists of beautiful beaches, mountains, cities, landscapes, historical sites and other places of interest satisfying the needs of holidaymakers of all ages. Special thanks to Gergely Dombóvári, the composer and performer of the wonderful music. Crete island was the centre of Europe's first advanced civilization, the Minoan (c. 2700–1420 BC). The archaeological site of Knossos Palace, famous for the legends such as Theseus and the Minotaur or Daedalus and Icarus, is just one of the miracles. Besides the legendary historical places, Crete offers you a wide variety of beaches, such as the best-known turquoise lagoon of Elafonissi, or a wonderful 6-hour walk tour in the famous Samaria gorge. Greece is known for its hospitality, Crete island is one of the most popular tourist destination in the country. Visitors can reach the island via international airport of Chania and Heraklion, or by boat to the main ports of Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The ferry route takes 8-9 hours from Athens (Piraeus). Original music: Gergely Dombóvári - Ezer sóhaj (A Thousand Sighs) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPJpadyLa54 Visit us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/2MinuteTravels/

Greek Islands FOOD TOUR in Crete - Seafood and MOUTHWATERING Gyros in Chania!
SUBSCRIBE for 2 new videos per week►http://bit.ly/MarkWiensSubscribe Athens Food Tour►https://youtu.be/Kvg9kJ35jEY T-shirts► https://migrationology.com/store/ Chania, Crete is an amazing old town, that’s rich with culture, and has some seriously delicious Greek island food to discover. In this video, you’ll find some of the must-eat restaurants and street food stalls to try, if you love to eat, when you’re in Chania, Crete! Here are all the places featured in this Cretan food tour of Chania: Μπουγάτσα Χανίων - For breakfast there’s no better place in Chania to get started than this local spot that specializes in bougatsa, and amazing cheese filled pastry. You can eat it with or without sugar, both was delicious, but I liked it without sugar. Total price - 5.40 EUR for 2 Oasis - For street food, this is about as good as Greek food gets. Oasis is a local gem that serves Cretan Greek gyro pita, a spit of pork that revolves and slow cooks. When you order, you get pita, filled with gyro meat, seasoning and tzatziki to top it off. It’s outstanding. Gyro pita - 2 EUR each Old Chania Market (Agora Market) - One of the many best things to do in Chania, Crete, is walk around the Old Chania Market, especially if you love to eat. I chose to eat at a restaurant called Αγαπήνης Οινομαγειρείο, that serves traditional Cretan food. It’s a market atmosphere, and the food is outstanding. Total price - 21 EUR for everything Attractions in Chania - Agios Nikolaos, Chania Promenade, Lighthouse - In the afternoon I did some sightseeing in Chania, which is a very charming town. I would highly recommend taking the walk out to the end of the lighthouse. The views are spectacular. Thalassino Ageri Restaurant - For dinner in Chania, we walked over to a restaurant called Thalassino Ageri Restaurant a legendary Greek seafood restaurant, along the coast, in an area of town with abandoned buildings. The setting is superb, and they offer a variety of seafood, including fresh fish catch of the day. We ordered a bunch of seafood, and enjoyed the gorgeous environment. Total price - 74.90 EUR Thank you for joining me on this Greek food tour of Chania, Crete. Hope it gives you some delicious food ideas, and thank you for watching! CRETE BEACHES. Elafonisi + Matala. It's a Dreamland! Best Beaches in Crete, Greece.
We spent two days exploring Crete and trying to find the best beaches on the island! On day one, we made our way to Elafonisi beach to discover why it’s rated one of the best beaches in all of Europe. Because of how mountainous Crete is, it took awhile to reach the beach and we got there around 11 am and had no trouble finding parking in the huge parking area. However, the beach was quite busy and we didn’t find any lounge chairs in the shade. We ended up putting our towels down on the beach and swimming a bit in the calm, clear, shallow water. However, there were just too many people and we didn’t stay very long. The next day we made our way to the hippy town of Matala. This town has a really interesting history! There is a beautiful beach with caves carved in the cliffs to one side. They date back thousands of years but more recently were used as homes by hippies in the 1960s, and Joni Mitchell was even there for awhile and wrote some songs about her time. We explored the town and the beach but didn’t actually go in the caves. Best Cars Rental: https://www.bestcars-rental.gr/ ------------------ SUBSCRIBE! - http://bit.ly/1M4etCO ------------------ Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and is in the Mediterranean Sea between the Sea of Crete and the Libyan Sea, south of the Peloponnese. Crete is approximately 260 km long and 60 km wide. Crete consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethimno, Heraklion and LasithiCrete, with a population of approximately 650,000, is not just sun, sea and sand; it is a quite distinct place full of vitality, warmth, hospitality, culture and of course an excellent infrastructure. Crete is well known for its seas and beaches but it has a very contrasting landscape. The island goes from fertile coastal plains to rugged mountains and from busy metropolitan cities to very peaceful hillside villages. If you travel throughout Crete you can clearly see remnants of Roman and Turkish aqueducts and architecture from when these people invaded the island long ago. You will also find ancient Minoan ruins around the island. Elafonisi: It lies in the southwestern side of Crete and about 75 kilometers from the town of Chania, an island that is within walking distance from the mainland, sometimes without even getting one’s toes wet.You can get to the Elafonissi island on foot because the waters are shallow, sometimes without even getting one's toes wet, and therefore is ideal for families with small children. It is named by the word "Elafi", which means deer in Greek because people years ago discovered that you can get easily to the islet on foot like a deer that walked to it. The island, which note is not to be confused with its namesake Elafonissos in Peloponissus, is a natura 2000 protected area. Moreover, Elafonissi is the only Greek appearance on a Tripadvisor list of the world’s 25 best beaches for 2014. Matala: A safe natural harbour on the Bay of Messara, blessed with a gently sweeping sand and pebble beach, the place in legend where Zeus swam ashore in the guise of a bull with Europa on his back. Many people make this village their base for Cretan holidays, as it is so central on the south coast, and away from the over-development of the north coast. The beach is 250m long and 45m wide. Matala has something for everyone. Although it has become a popular tourist destination it still retains the charm and character of the quiet fishing village it started as at the beginning of the 20th-century, and the laid-back lifestyle of the hippies of the 60’s and 70's lives on. Half the beach is fringed by tamarisk trees, leading the eye on to impressive formations of sandstone rock cliffs with their famous caves sliding into the sea at an odd angle, creating one of the most unusual beachscapes on the island. ---------------------------------- FOLLOW US • Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/delightfultravellers/ • Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/deltravellers • Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/delightfultravellers/?fref=ts • Website: https://www.delightfultravellers.com

Cretan Food - 100% PURE LOVE Farm-to-Table Mediterranean Cuisine in Crete!
This was incredible traditional Cretan food experience! Watch all my Greek Food videos here► https://youtu.be/Kvg9kJ35jEY Subscribe► https://www.youtube.com/user/migrationology The top reason I wanted to visit Crete, the biggest island of Greece, was to experience the food. Cretan food is known for its incredible Mediterranean based food diet. Even though it’s an island surrounded by the sea, Crete is such a huge island that it’s actually more well known for lamb and meat rather than seafood. One day while my wife and I were in Chania, Crete, we drove over to a countryside restaurant in the mountains called Ντουνιάς (I’m not sure of the English name). Immediately as we arrived, and met the incredibly passionate owner, and watched him cooking traditional Crete food in clay pots over fire, I knew it was going to be an incredible food experience. Before eating, I took a quick walk around the farm, to see all the produce and animals they had on their property. The owner was quick to mention to met that it wasn’t just a restaurant, but a farm. Everything he cooked was from his farm on his land - the meat, the vegetables, the fruit, the seasonings, even the wine. Everything was local and seasonal. After walking around, I just asked the owner to serve me a few of his favorite dishes of the day. We enjoyed some incredible house wine, bread, and then mountain goat. Everything was purely delicious, seasoned with wine and rosemary, and full of natural Mediterranean heb flavors. We were also served a few more Cretan dishes, all of which were stunningly good. My only complaint was that we didn’t plan to stay long enough. We had to eat, and then head back to Chania town because I had something else planned that day as well. It’s the type of restaurant you could go and hang out for the entire day. Ντουνιάς - An amazing authentic Crete food restaurant where everything is cooked in the traditional way by pure love. Total price - 34.90 EUR for everything Thank you for watching this authentic Crete food video! The Ancient Minoans Aegean Empire
Around 1500 BC, the great Minoan civilization thrived on the islands of Crete and Santorin in the eastern Mediterranean. A guided tour of the legendary sites at Akrotiri, Phasestus, Ayía Triáda and Knosses culminates in a visit to the palace of Minos, famous for its mythical labyrinth. Minoans were traders, and their cultural contacts reached far beyond the island of Crete — to Egypt's Old Kingdom, to copper-bearing Cyprus, Canaan, and the Levantine coasts beyond, and to Anatolia. In late 2009, Minoan-style frescoes and other Minoan-style artifacts were discovered during excavations of the Canaanite palace at Tel Kabri, Israel, leading archaeologists to conclude that the Minoan influence was the strongest foreign influence on that Caananite city state. These are the only Minoan remains ever found in Israel. Minoan techniques and styles in ceramics also provided models, of fluctuating influence, for Helladic Greece. Along with the familiar example of Thera, Minoan "colonies" can be found first at Kastri on Cythera, an island close to the Greek mainland that came under Minoan influence in the mid-third millennium (EMII) and remained Minoan in culture for a thousand years, until Mycenaean occupation in the 13th century. The use of the term "colony", however, like "thalassocracy", has been criticized in recent years. The Minoan strata there replace a mainland-derived culture in the Early Bronze Age, the earliest Minoan settlement outside Crete. The Cyclades were in the Minoan cultural orbit, and, closer to Crete, the islands of Karpathos, Saria and Kasos, also contained Minoan colonies, or settlements of Minoan traders, from the Middle Bronze Age (MMI-II). Most of them were abandoned in LMI, but Minoan Karpathos recovered and continued with a Minoan culture until the end of the Bronze Age. Other supposed Minoan colonies, such as that hypothesised by Adolf Furtwängler for Aegina, were later dismissed by scholars. There was a Minoan colony at Ialysos on Rhodes. Minoan cultural influence indicates an orbit that extended not only throughout the Cyclades (so-called Minoanisation), but in locations such as Egypt and Cyprus. Paintings from the 15th century BC in Thebes, Egypt depict a number of individuals, who are Minoan in appearance, bearing gifts. Inscriptions record these people as coming from Keftiu, or the "islands in the midst of the sea", and may refer to gift-bringing merchants or officials from Crete. Certain locations within Crete emphasize it as an "outward looking" society. The Neopalatial site of Kato Zakros, for instance, is located within 100 metres of the modern shore-line, situated within a bay. Its large number of workshops and the richness of its site materials indicate a potential 'entrepôt' for import and export. Such activities are elaborated in artistic representations of the sea, including the 'Flotilla' fresco from room 5, in the west house at Akrotiri.

Crete Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Crete. Crete is an island of light, the ‘cradle of Zeus’, with sun-drenched coastlines, picturesque villages and majestic mountains. Now wonder that even the gods felt comfortable in this wonderful region of Greece.Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly Greek islands, on which a highly developed culture has existed for 4000 years. The Venetians built massive fortresses to defend the island against the Turks Knossos was the capital of Crete at the time of King Minos, son of the god, Zeus, and the Phoenician princess, Europa. The Knossos Palace was a magnificent building with seven floors and around 1,400 rooms which served as living quarters, administration, storage and for courtly celebration. Most of the ruins are part of the new palace, as the first was built 2000 years before the birth of Christ. The Gortys Ruins are reminders of the moving history of an old town which was prosperous in the 5th century B.C. when Gortys became the most powerful town of the Messara Plain and throughout the olive groves between the hills can be found the scattered remnants of its past cultural riches. With its beautiful sandy beaches, the horseshoe-shaped bay of Matala is a popular coastal resort to which many come simply to experience the glorious sunsets in addition to the rich archaeological revelations of Phaistos Palace. Agia Galini is a quiet fishing village which, during the summer months, is a lively bathing resort on Crete’s south coast. However, it has managed to maintain its original atmosphere with fishing boats in the harbour and crystal clear water lapping the shoreline, plus the allure of its tavernas and restaurants. Agia Roumeli is best reached by boat as it is located on a rocky coast toward the Libyan Sea. Fishing villages are few and far between and most activity takes place in the mountains which rise up majestically from the Aegean. Take it all in on a driving tour, trek through Europe’s longest gorge, hike to the cave where Zeus was born or cycle among orchards on the Lasithi Plateau. Leave time to plant your footprints on a sandy beach, and boat, kayak or snorkel in the crystalline waters. Rich Historical Tapestry =================== Crete’s natural beauty is equalled only by the richness of its history. The island is the birthplace of the first advanced society on European soil, the Minoans, who ruled some 4000 years ago, and you’ll find evocative vestiges all over, including the famous Palace of Knossos. At the crossroads of three continents, Crete has been coveted and occupied by consecutive invaders. History imbues Hania and Rethymno, where labyrinthine lanes – laid out by the Venetians – are lorded over by mighty fortresses, and where gorgeously restored Renaissance mansions rub rafters with mosques and Turkish bathhouses. The Byzantine influence stands in magnificent frescoed chapels, churches and monasteries. Cuisine ====== If you’re a foodie, you will be in heaven in Crete, where ‘locavore’ is not a trend but a way of life. Rural tavernas often produce their own meat, cheese, olive oil, raki and wine, and catch their own seafood. Follow a gourmet trail across the landscape and you’ll delight in distinctive herbs and greens gathered from each hillside, cheeses made fresh with unique village- or household-specific recipes, and honey flavoured by mountain herbs. The Cretan diet is among the healthiest in the world. Pair your meal with excellent local wine, and cap it off with a fiery shot of raki. Culture ====== Crete’s spirited people champion their unique culture and customs, and time-honoured traditions remain a dynamic part of the island’s soul. Look for musicians striking up a free-form jam on local instruments, like the stringed lyra, or wedding celebrants weaving their time-honoured traditional regional dances. Meeting regular folk gossiping in kafeneia (coffee houses), preparing their Easter feast, tending to their sheep or celebrating during the island’s many festivals is what makes a visit to Crete so special.
