Autonomous container ship: All-electric, autonomous container vessel set to sail in 2020 - TomoNews
NORWAY —Two Norwegian companies have teamed up to build the world's first all-electric, autonomous container ship. Norwegian company Yara and maritime technology company Kongsberg have said the vessel will be ready by late 2018, according the New Atlas. The state-of-the-art ship will transport chemicals and fertilizers from a Yara production plant to nearby towns. The plan is for the boat to first be operated by a crew in 2018, before transitioning into remote operations in 2019 and then fully autonomous by 2020. By transitioning to an all-electric shipping pathway, Yara can cut down 40,000 truck deliveries a year, which translates into reductions in nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions. Brooding in a sea container!
Brooding chickens is one of the larger challenges to setting up a pastured poultry operation. Some big problems we have had in the past with rigged up brooders is draft/temp control and predation issues. (rats in particular) With setting up a brooder inside a sea container we have eliminated these problems and reduced brooder mortality to below 5%.

Container Ship lost part of its cargo in rough seas 01/06/18
Container Ship lost part of its cargo in rough seas Nappies and surgical masks were washing up on New South Wales beaches as boat operators were warned to look out for debris after more than 80 shipping containers came loose from a vessel off Newcastle. The Liberian-registered YM Efficiency was making its way from Taiwan to Sydney on Thursday night when it encountered rough seas. It lost 83 containers overboard and a further 30 were badly damaged. The ship, operated by the Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation, spent Friday night at sea off Sydney and as assessment was due on Saturday. Roads and Maritime Services warned boaters over marine radio to be aware of the potential hazards and said two containers were spotted about 100 metres off Fingal Head and Boondelbah Island, near Port Stephens while sections of another container were found on rocks at Yacaaba Headland. A helicopter scoured the coastline on Saturday for the 40-foot containers while nappies, surgical masks and plastic containers were among the first debris to wash up on Jimmys Beach and Rocky Point. A Yang Ming spokeswoman said there were no dangerous goods or marine contaminants inside. “There is no security concern about the condition of the vessel,” she said. The company was informing customers and discussing the next steps with its insurer. Sea container transportation of goods, forwarding services
Sea container transportation, import / export Ukraine, http://www.mitridat.odessa.ua/
CONTAINERIZATION TODAY was produced in the 1960s and presented by the American Iron and Steel Institute, promoting the benefits of shipping cargo using steel containers. The film touts the major advancements in containers and freight transportation found on highways, waterways, and railways. The strong, durable steel boxes are a new system of freight that saves companies and shipping lines both time and money. Several shots related to shipping, including what appears to be the waterfront of New York City (00:43), start off the film. Various sizes of shipping containers are used to effectively and safely transport goods: some are as small as 10’x10’ while others are up to 40’ in length. Even at such large sizes, containers are easily moved from one shipping method to another, such as from a semi-truck to a barge (02:14). The strength of the steel frames allows the containers to be stacked on top of each other, maximizing the use of space. The essential principle of containerization is the shipment of many pieces of cargo as a single unit, such as Dodge V8 engines (05:18). At Hobart Brothers’ Troy, Ohio plant (05:37), art wielding units are loaded and sealed in containers as a single Seatrain unit, saving the company money on packaging materials. At the Ford Motor Company’s Tractor Division Plant, 10-speed transmissions come off the production line and are loaded into containers as a single unit (06:38); these containers are then loaded onto a ship (08:15) and are sent to Antwerp, Belgium (08:25) where they are unloaded, the contents undamaged. The safety and near-pilfering proof construction has reduced the cost of shipping insurance, further saving companies money. Steel plays the primary role in the containers because of its strength and fire-resistant quality. Other companies, including Chris-Craft (10:57) and Singer Company (11:09) have saved money using containerization to ship cargo. The film concludes by boasting of the benefits of containerization and shows aerial footage of what appears to be the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (11:48) in New York City. Modern container shipping celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006. Almost from the first voyage, use of this method of transport for goods grew steadily and in just five decades, containerships would carry about 60% of the value of goods shipped via sea. The idea of using some type of shipping container was not completely novel. Boxes similar to modern containers had been used for combined rail- and horse-drawn transport in England as early as 1792. The US government used small standard-sized containers during the Second World War, which proved a means of quickly and efficiently unloading and distributing supplies. However, in 1955, Malcom P. McLean, a trucking entrepreneur from North Carolina, USA, bought a steamship company with the idea of transporting entire truck trailers with their cargo still inside. He realized it would be much simpler and quicker to have one container that could be lifted from a vehicle directly on to a ship without first having to unload its contents. His ideas were based on the theory that efficiency could be vastly improved through a system of "intermodalism", in which the same container, with the same cargo, can be transported with minimum interruption via different transport modes during its journey. Containers could be moved seamlessly between ships, trucks and trains. This would simplify the whole logistical process and, eventually, implementing this idea led to a revolution in cargo transportation and international trade over the next 50 years. Lost at sea: Ecological assessment around a sunken shipping container
Thousands of shipping containers are lost from cargo vessels each year. Many of these containers eventually sink to the deep seafloor. In 2004, researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) discovered a lost shipping container almost 1,300 meters (4,200 feet) below the surface of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. In the first ever survey of its kind, researchers from MBARI and the Sanctuary recently described how deep-sea animal communities on and around the container differed from those in surrounding areas. The red dots seen in some of the underwater footage are lasers mounted on the remotely operated submersible. The lasers are 29 cm apart and allow the scientists to estimate animal size. Moving a Shipping Container (without a forklift or crane)
Picking up a shipping container at the depot or similar location is easy. Pull in, the forklift or crane picks up the container and drops is on the trailer, and you're off and running. The other week we talked about unloading a shipping container without a forklift, and now we'll go through when you need to move a shipping or storage container and don't have the luxury of having a forklift or crane available on site. If you find yourself in this situation you'll need a tilt bed truck, strong chain, and a piece of 4x4 wood or something similar.

Six Months At Sea In The Merchant Marine
In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me, therefore please excuse the couple of shipping terms I misused (such as saying "license" when I should have said "credential"). I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching. Triple E Container Ship MADISON MAERSK Fully Loaded inbound into Felixstowe, UK (June 26, 2015)
Felixstowe Container Ship Spotting June 26, 2015 video 7 of 8 The 18,340 TEU Maersk Line Triple E container vessel MADISON MAERSK sailing into the Port of Felixstowe, United Kingdom with a full load, inbound for Asia via the Suez Canal. MADISON MAERSK is one of 20 Triple E container vessels put in service from mid 2013 to mid 2015 by Maersk Line. The "Triple E" was the world's largest container ship from June 2013 until November 2014 when China Sipping's CSCL Globe went into service. Although the Triple E is no longer the world's largest container ship, she is still very impressive to see especially when fully loaded.
