Gathering Data using PowerShell

01:05:09
Presented on May 17, 2017 by Data Platform MVP Ben Miller Think of questions that you could ask about an environment that is database rich. How many databases do you have, across how many servers? How has the data grown and how much disk space will we need over the next 2 years? So many questions to be asked and there are not a lot if any views or functions that can tell you what happened a day ago or even last week. Do you know how many databases you had at the beginning of the year or at the end of the year without having to dig through logs or other places? This session will cover using PowerShell to get information quickly and putting it in a repository that you can use the answer these questions. Not only that, but you can use it proactively in your career as a DBA. PowerShell has some great tools and using SMO you can gather and store all that information. Join me in the quest to become a PowerShell DBA and have information at your fingertips to help you in your career.

PowerShell Summit videos are recorded on a "best effort" basis. We use a room mic to capture as much room audio as possible, with an emphasis on capturing the speaker. Our recordings are made in a way that minimizes overhead for our speakers and interruptions to our live audience. These recordings are meant to preserve the presentations' information for posterity, and are not intended to be a substitute for attending the Summit in person. These recordings are not intended as professional video training products. We hope you find these videos useful - the equipment used to record these was purchased using generous donations from members of the PowerShell community.

Configure Static Website Hosting on Amazon S3 using AWS Tools for PowerShell

10:46
Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) enables you to host static website content, such as HTML pages, and other static assets such as CSS and JavaScript files. During this video, we'll explore how to create an Amazon S3 Bucket, enable it for static website hosting, specify a default / index document, and finally configure an S3 Bucket Policy that allows access from an IP address range / CIDR block. You'll learn how to use the AWS Tools for PowerShell to perform all of the configuration options, including creating the S3 Bucket, switching on static website hosting, and applying an S3 Bucket Policy. To create the S3 Bucket Policy, you'll learn how to use a web-based tool called the AWS Policy Generator. This tool helps simplify the process of generating a resource-based policy for certain types of resources including SQS Queues, SNS Topics, VPC Endpoints, and of course, S3 Buckets. Operational validation of SQL Server at scale with Jenkins and PowerShell (Webinar, 2017-03-01)

56:09
Note: This was the second run, the first run having more upfront discussion but lots of broken demos (https://youtu.be/97is2JLEoM8). Third time's a charm? Sample code and slides here (but for modules you should really use Install-Module): https://www.codykonior.com/files/2017/03/2017-03-01%20Operational%20Validation.zip Are you accountable for databases or database servers? Do you fix problems only to see them pop up again months or years later in slightly different scenarios? Have you been called at 2am and asked to “health check” hundreds of servers for an issue that nobody in the world has ever documented before and wished there was an easy mode to do that or even avoid the problem in the first place? If so then Operational Validation can help you. In this session you’re going to get: * A mindset on how to handle your day to day duties in a way that keeps you efficient, honest to yourself and to others, while covering your posterior. * Free tools to fix things and make sure they stay fixed over time. Really free. As in you couldn’t pay for them even if you wanted to. If you work with one instance you’re going to learn how to manage five hundred instances. And if you work with five hundred instances you’re going to learn how to have fun doing it. We’re going to learn: * Jenkins, a cool web application you can install on your workstation to provide orchestration and reports. * How to integrate PowerShell with Jenkins and multi-thread efficiently in the background with PoshRSJob using ready-to-go templates so you don’t need to worry about how it works. * Then we’re going to write some tests. They’re not going to be beautiful tests. We’re going to be testing some of the scummiest, most crapulent edge cases SQL Server has to offer. Please bring tissues because there will be tears. If you’ve ever said, “I don’t know what to test”, I’ll make you regret it. I’ll also discuss a few other PowerShell modules like CimSession and DbData and why you might want to use them for reliable and scalable tests. By the end of the session you should be bouncing off the wall and reconsidering your life. I want you to start screaming about Operational Validation from the rooftops, and have the tools and know-how to quickly start on your own.
