World's Most Beautiful Railway - The Bernina Express

10:01
Shortly after the construction of the Gotthard tunnel, Switzerland pulled off another pioneering achievement: the construction of the Thusis - St. Moritz railway line between 1899 and 1903. This opened the Upper Engadine to tourists. The Rhaetian Railway still passes over the same bridges and through the same loop tunnels. A still greater challenge was the subsequent construction of the Bernina Railway. No other railway in the world overcomes such steep gradients and winds through such steep curves without the help of a cogwheel. Let’s start with my preconceptions: I expected Japan’s capital, and home to the world’s largest urban population to be over the top and really in your face, with neon lights and anime at every turn and i certainly wasn’t disappointed. The streets are lined with towering, multi-storey buildings, each filled with mind bending department stores and arcades, offices to some of the world’s biggest brands and restaurants serving the best food you’ll ever taste. But despite all the apparent madness and chaos, spend a few days in Tokyo and it just makes sense. Here, efficiency is an art form. Japanese attention to detail is legendary, and it runs through everything, from food to public transport and urban planning. And yes, even the toilets. This trip was an educational and weirdly enlightening experience. I’ve been lucky to visit a lot of amazing places making these videos, but Tokyo is in a league of its own. So Tokyo, it’s big, it’s busy and it’s brilliant. As ever, let’s start with the airports. Flying from the UK you’ll come into one of Tokyo’s two major international airports, Haneda or Narita. Of course, you don’t need me to tell you that Tokyo is a really long way away, direct flights from Europe will take a whopping 12 hours for the nine and a half thousand kilometre journey. So you’ve got Haneda airport which is roughly 13 miles south of the city, and then you’ve got 50 miles east. Fortunately, both are really easy to get to noisy noisy Tokyo. Here’s what you need to know. From Haneda you have three main options, the airport limousine bus, a taxi or the monorail. The airport limousine takes between 30 and 45 minutes, stopping at most major hotels in the centre of town, with prices increasing for the night service between midnight and 5am. A taxi should take about half and hour depending on traffic, with prices depending where you’re being dropped off. There’s also a 20% extra charge between 10pm and 5am. However the quickest option is the airport’s dedicated monorail. It’ll get you into Hamamatsucho station in 13 minutes and from here you can connect to the circular Yamanote metro line to reach other parts of the city. The metro runs between 9 and 7 on weekdays and then 9 to 5 on weekends and public holidays. That’s Haneda! Here’s what you need to know about Narita. Narita is a whopping 50 miles east of Tokyo, so all of your transport options are going to take a while. The Airport Limousine bus and taxis runs from Narita but both will take anywhere between 90 minutes to 2 hours to reach central Tokyo. Instead, take the JR Narita Express. It’ll whisk into town in a little under an hour, and with this being Japan, the trains are on time and super efficient. A word of warning about getting home; if you’re flight’s on a Sunday, make sure you check the train times because there’s a reduced service. Check your departure time, and then allow plenty of extra time to get to the airport.

Best Things to do in Taipei - Overnight City Guide

16:48
I have always loved travelling. I was lucky enough that from a young age, my parents took us all over the place, instilling in us a sense of larger spaces and broadened horizons. As I grew up, I became more independent in my travels and tried to figure out ways to do it more. From learning Spanish in Salamanca to purposefully getting 6 month summer jobs in places I wanted to explore further. I became accustomed to getting lost and just wondering the streets, figuring out where would be the next good meal or when I would stumble onto some secret only locals whispered about. Getting lost was second nature back then. The only resources we had were over-read guide books that by the time you reached their recommendations, the waiters would push their best sellers down your throats. So we had to resort to friend recommendations, what blog resources were up on the internet, guide books, conversations with strangers and your hotel concierge. Nowadays in our hyper connected world, everyone is an expert and there are so many sites that claim that this restaurants, trumps this bar, which is passé and now is considered touristy by pretty much everyone. Honestly, for me, good is good, so that’s what I base myself on. For every family or friend trip we would take, I became the defacto research guide. Skimming through websites in English and in the language of destination, guide books, personal blogs, Instagram hashtags, geotags and anything else social media would allow me to delve into. Finally, being able to create a snap shot of the city, its districts and where to eat, sleep, drink, party or learn about the culture. This is what Overnight is about. The Trans-Andean railroad takes in the infamous Nariz del Diablo, or Devil’s Nose, a mountain with almost perpendicular walls. To overcome this obstacle, the train zigzags to ascend 500 meters in less than 12 kilometers. With steep ascents and descents, it’s no ride for the faint-hearted! The main line along the country’s Andean spine links the coastal city of Guayaquil with the capital Quito. It was finished in 1908, but was mostly shut down after a series of weather-related disasters destroyed much of the Ecuadorian rail network in the 1990s. After extensive restoration, a new cross-Andean service was opened in 2013, following the original narrow-gauge line. It’s 450 kilometers long and runs from the Pacific coast up to the Andean highlands. On its cross-country journey, the train is accompanied by guards on motorcycles who, in the absence of railway gates, stop traffic at every level crossing along the way to let the train pass. The Tren Crucero, - or "cruise train"- is the centerpiece of Ecuador’s rejuvenated railway. A revamped luxury steam train, it runs once a fortnight and has room for 54 passengers. The most exhilarating stretch of the ride begins deep down in the gorge of the River Chanchán. The train zigzags up the Nariz del Diablo - the "Devil's Nose" - in a series of dizzying switchbacks in which the tracks almost seem to lie on top of each other. Join the reporters for the ride of a lifetime, as the train journeys on to Urbina, the highest station at 3,609 meters above sea level, and along the so-called Avenue of Volcanoes, to the Cotopaxi National Park and onwards to Quito, the world's highest capital. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. By train across Sri Lanka | DW Documentary

42:26
Asia’s most beautiful railway line? The “Main Line” cuts through tea plantations and jungle, then passes Buddhist temples and relicts of the British Empire. In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called "Main Line." The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia. Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. NYC Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to New York City

19:55
Things YOU need to know before you travel to New York City. NYC consists of 5 Boroughs, Manhattan, the most famous and dense is also the smallest. Brooklyn is the most populated, with 2.6 million residents (total of 8.5M in NYC). Queens is the largest, and “most ethnically diverse” county in the US. Bronx is the northenmost and the only one that is part of the US Mainland. Staten Island is the most suburban Manhattan is BIG -- don’t expect to walk the whole thing in a day 5 days is probably the sweet spot. No less than 3 days. Wear comfortable shoes Girls: Sex and the City says everybody walks in heels all the time -- not so much. Don’t try and walk everywhere, the subway is there for a reason. NYC is Expensive! Everything costs more here. The city runs on tips New Yorkers aren’t really rude.. They are just efficient. Expect to pay to use a bathroom, there really aren’t many good public toilets Weather For about 8 months out of the year it is chilly. And, for about 3 months it’s just plain miserable. Be prepared for really cold and windy, or really hot, humid, and muggy. Be prepared to rain always. Summer: Highs 84F/29C Lows: 68F/20C (July) Winter: Highs: 38F/3C - Lows 25F/-4C (January) Winter Footwear -- puddles the size of small lakes Layers Best months: September, October, May and June Getting in Airports LaGuardia (M80 Bus) JFK (Airtrain to Howard Beach then catch the subway) Newark (30 mins on Amtrak or NJ Transit) Beware of unnoficial cabs Trains -- to Penn Station or Grand Central. Grand Central is amazing. Megabus if you’re on the east coast Driving -- if you do drive in… just plan to park and leave your car for the duration of your stay. Transportation in NYC The Subway mostly runs north south… east and west you’ll be walking it If you’re in NYC for awhile, get a week or month long Subway pass Avoid the empty subway car, it’s empty for a reason. Hot or smelly. Don’t lean on the subway poles… more people can hold on to it Pay attention to the local, or express trains. Get in the subway at the correct entrance, going the right direction, and for the right line There are tons of yellow taxis… but they are notoriously hard to hail in bad weather Flagship city for Uber, Lyft. But traffic is slow. If you’re running late, don’t take a taxi. You WILL get stuck in traffic. Walking -- don’t drop in the middle of the sidewalk Ferrys for a different way to get around NYC Ferry - East River route for some of the best views Citi Bikes -- 10,000 bikes and 600 stations -- Download the citi bike app - $12/day Bus Tours -- skip it Times Square Crowded, chaotic, dazzling and overpriced Is really small -- and there’s not much to do once you get there. Whatever you do, don’t eat here. The food is overpriced and mediocre due to high rent. Broadway Shows Book way ahead of time There’s a vibrant “Off-Broadway” Scene Book of Mormon and Avenue Q are my favorites Check out the TKTs booth for cheap tickets or online now Parks (Central Park & the High Line) Central Park Is really big -- and no subway across Central Park is 800 Acres Strawberry Fields, Sheep’s Meadow, ice skating rinks. Visit the High Line on a weekday to avoid the crowds Big Apple Attractions Statue of Liberty -- book ahead of time Cant get tix for the Statue of Liberty, ride the Staten Island Ferry for free! Empire State Building -- Long Lines Top of the Rock is really cool -- great views of the Empire State New WTC Observatory 9/11 Memorial ($2 Reservation Fee Museum of Modern Art Metropolitan Museum of Art American Museum of Natural History (Suggested Admission) Chelsea Market New York Public Library Flatiron Building Shopping along 5th Avenue Hotels Expensive! Save some money by staying in Queens, Brooklyn, or Staten Island If money is no object -- the Park Hyatt is amazing Marriott Marquis on Times Square in the middle of it all Food Food carts and trucks can be really good The Halal Guys is a “must eat” Grimaldi’s Pizza (In Brooklyn under the bridge) and Lomardis in Little Italy Pastrami on Rye Shake Shack started here Chinatown Get noodles at Xi’an Famous Foods (location in Chinatown) Bagels with Lox New York Hotdogs from Gray’s Papaya New York Cheesecake CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/yellowwsub Click here to watch more of my New York City videos in my NYC Travel Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gP9uQKpzFA&list=PLOVadUHX1B-Lz1jCrYEnaoFpon0MwO9JJ Yellow Productions on social media: FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/YellowProductionsTravel INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/yellowwproductions/ TWITTER: ChrisRaney GOOGLE+: https://google.com/+yellowwproductions Check out my blog at: http://yelloww.net Music: Easy Lemon Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)

How to get from Rome's Airport to city center by train

04:19
http://www.distantlands.com Taking the Train from Leonardo Da Vinci Roma airport to city center by train. From Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, the easiest and quickest way to central Rome is the train. The railway station at the airport can be found outside of Terminal 3. Directions to the Train station are well signposted within the passenger terminals. There are two types of train that can take you to Rome’s city center. The first and fastest option is the Leonardo Express, and the second option is the local FL1 train. Both trains leave from the same station at Fiumicino. Follow signs in the airport to the train station. The entire way is covered, and there are moving walkways to make the journey easier. At the station, you can buy tickets from the ticket agents or from a self-service machine. To find your platform, check the departure board. The Leonardo Express trains are shown as “DIR”, while the regional train (FL1) is shown as “REG.” You’ll want the train going in the direction of Orte , the final station on the FL1 line. The station has three platforms and other local trains also terminate here. So do check which platform your train will be at. Before getting on the train, be sure to validate your ticket at the yellow or green validating machines. These machines can be found on the platform. If you’re staying in the city center, the most direct option is the Leonardo Express. The Leonardo Express travels nonstop between Fiumicino Airport and Termini Station in 31 minutes. Leonardo Express is available daily from 6:38 am to 23:38 . Depending on the time of day, it departs every 15 – 30 minutes, and costs 14 euro each way. Children under 12 years old always ride free. From Termini Station, you can access central Rome’s two Metro lines, or take a bus or taxi to your destination. And of course, you can easily connect to trains to other parts of Italy. If you’re staying in the suburbs, or just want to save some money, you can take the regional FL1 train, which costs 8 euro. Trains run daily from 6:58 am until 23:38 . The journey will be longer, because this train makes many stops between the airport and the city. 47 minutes to Tiburtina station. Be aware that this train does NOT stop at Termini Station. There are four stops near central Rome: Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana and Tiburtina. At Trastevere, you can transfer to another regional train going to Termini Station. From the other stations you can connect to the Rome’s Metro. And from Tiburtina, you can take high-speed Freccia or Italo trains to major cities throughout Italy. #DISTANTLANDS #TRAVELTIPS #TRAVEL
New Delhi-Bangalore 2,400 Km Journey Part I: Legendary Karnataka Express

23:32
The Karnataka Express was introduced in the late 1970s, linking the national capital of New Delhi with Bangalore, the state capital of Karnataka. The train at present covers the 2,400 km journey in around 40 hours, cutting across six states and through the Deccan Plateau. The 24-coacher is powered by an electric locomotive till Manmad, after which two diesel locomotives take over for the remainder of the journey till Bangalore The first part of a full journey aboard the legendary Karnataka Express, covering the stretch between New Delhi and Manmad in Maharashtra. We start off from New Delhi at night, and have a blistering encounter with the Bhopal Shatabdi. Next morning, we found ourselves cruising towards Bhopal, past the historic Sanchi stupa. Post Bhopal, we cross a short ghat section enroute Itarsi, and subsequently, the Narmada river. Courtesy the monsoons, the entire landscape is verdant green and the Itarsi WAP4 in charge of the Karnataka Express maintains a sprightly pace as it race towards Khandwa, past the Indira Sagar Dam. The twin-Alco hauled Pune Patna Express greets us in this stretch, along with a couple of other expresses. After Khandwa, we race through the Yawal wildlife sanctuary, under a canopy of clouds, and after crossing the Tapti river, enter Bhusawal. The rains ease a bit after Bhusawal and we maintain a fair clip till Manmad, where our locomotive changes from WAP4 to twin Alcos - a WDM2-WDM3A combination from Maula Ali. Other notable crossings include the Punjab Mail, the Goa Express, and the Pushpak Express.

When talking about how to fly cheap there are a few factors that you have to consider. One of them is where you are traveling from and where you are traveling to and how flexible are you with your departure airport and destination airport. The second thing is how flexibel are you with your date of travel. The more flexibility the easier it is to find cheap airline tickets. Another key factor to finding cheap flight is actually to find the best booking sites. But really the secret to cheap flights is combining all of those factors into one magic booking strategy. If you want to fly cheap you’ve got to be smart. So as I mentioned flexibility when booking airline tickets is one of the key factors in actually succeeding in finding the cheapest flights. That in term means finding the best booking sites means finding the most flexibel booking sites. There are some good options out there like flights.google.com or kayak.com. They let you enter 3-5 departure airports and 3-5 destination airports and you can be fairly flexible on the travel date. but for what we are looking for that is not good enough. Also many of the booking sites don’t show you all of the airfares because some of the fares are so discounted that the booking site wouldn’t get any commissions anymore. So found another secret to cheap airfare. Finding those fares that not even the booking sites have. Well I stumbled upon a website that combines all those factors into one beautiful beautiful packet . The FASTEST Trains In The World 2018

Subscribe for more! ► https://www.youtube.com/c/InfoBytee Follow our Facebook ► https://www.facebook.com/InfoByteee Description Traveling Europe by train is already faster than by plane right now, and just last year a Japanese train reached 374 mph on a test track, covering 1.1 miles in 10.8 seconds and hitting a new world record. You can't ride that one just yet, but there are more than a few bullet trains available to speed your travels. Here are the world's fastest high-speed trains in commercial service, ranked by operating speed: 1. Shanghai Maglev: 267 mph The world’s fastest train isn’t the newest, the shiniest, or even the one with the most expensive tickets. Charging $8 per person, per ride, the Maglev runs the nearly 19 miles from Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport to the Longyang metro station on the outskirts of Shanghai. That’s right—the train, which takes just over 7 minutes to complete the journey using magnetic levitation (maglev) technology, doesn’t go to the city center. As such, the bulk of the passengers since its 2004 debut have been travelers on their way to and from the airport, cameras out and ready to snap a photo of the speed indicators when the train hits 431 km/hr (267 mph). 2. Harmony CRH380A: 236 mph Shanghai wins again, serving as home to more than just the Maglev. China Railways’ Harmony is the world’s fastest non-maglev passenger train currently in service, connecting Shanghai with Nanjing since 2010. It now counts additional routes of Shanghai to Hangzhou and Wuhan to Guangzhou. Trenitalia Frecciarossa 1000: 220 mph Italy’s “red arrow” is Europe’s fastest, capable of shuttling passengers from Milan to Florence or Rome in under three hours. Unveiled during Expo 2015, held in Milan, the train is remarkable as much for its speed as for its construction: its components are nearly 100 percent renewable and sustainable. 4. Renfe AVE: 217 mph Spain's fastest train is the Velaro E by Siemens, and it is used for long-distance services to major Spanish cities and beyond: traveling from Barcelona to Paris can now be accomplished on high-speed rail in six hours. 5. DeutscheBahn ICE: 205 mph The distinctively futuristic white and silver of the Inter-City Express, or ICE, combined with its sharp red line, makes an impressive sight speeding through scenic German countryside. Similar to Spain's Renfe AVE train, Germany's fastest train is another Siemens design, the Velaro D, and was built to fit through the Channel Tunnel. This fact is important as DeutscheBahn hopes to operate these trains in the future from Frankfurt to London. 6. Eurostar e320 and TGV: 200 mph Both the TGV and Eurostar e320 trains are tied for next on the list, but it’s the latter that’s making headlines this year. Named for its top speed of 320 km/hr (200 mph), the e320 series is the first tip-to-tail redesign of a Eurostar train in the company’s 22 years. The speedier trains—20 km/hr faster than the earlier, e300 series—are capable of trimming another 15 minutes off the already zippy Eurostar trips of around two hours between Brussels, Paris, and London. Since Eurostar delivers its passengers right to the center of each city and fares are available with Rail Europe from $70 one-way, it’s a wonder anyone still flies between the cities.

I'm going to let you in on a secret… Kyoto is my favourite place in Japan. Its 17 UNESCO world heritage sites, made up of temples, shrines and gardens are everything I wanted to Japan to be. Traditional... beautiful... peaceful. But what gives Kyoto its understated edge is the blend of old and new. Sitting alongside the ryokan, pagodas and kagai flower streets is a modern city that may not have the buzz and general craziness of neon neighbour Tokyo, but I think it’s the perfect introduction for your first time in Japan. As you can see, Kyoto is a pretty awesome place, and for me it’s probably one of the most unique destinations I’ve ever been to. So, let’s take a look at how I got here. Flights from the UK will arrive at Osaka Kansai International airport 60 miles south of Kyoto. From here you can take one of Japan’s super-efficient trains into the city or hop on the Airport Limousine bus. The JR Haruka Express takes 75 minutes to Kyoto Station, stopping at Shin-Osaka along the way. My one-way ticket cost 1,880¥. The Limousine Bus departs from the first floor of both terminals and takes 90 minutes to reach Kyoto Station, after which it makes several further stops across town. If one of these stops is near your hotel, the bus may end up being quicker than the train, so check their online timetable before making your journey. If you hold a British passport you will not need a visa to enter Japan and can stay for up to 90 days as a tourist. You’ll need to fill out a landing card when you arrive and may need proof that your departure flight is booked. When it comes to discovering new cities, I am a massive advocate of getting the bus. Why? Because it’s a great way to do some cheap sightseeing, and in Kyoto it’s also a particularly good option and here’s why. Somewhat surprisingly for Japan, Kyoto does not have an extensive subway network. Yes, there is a metro, but we found that when visiting Kyoto’s tourist sites it generally worked out quicker to get the bus. And like I said, you get to really see the city. When boarding, get on at the back and off at the front. Kyoto buses have a single flat fare of 230¥ that you must pay as you get off. The driver will not have change, so make sure you have the exact money when buying a single. However, I recommend doing what I did and picking up a 24-hour pass for 500¥. I picked mine up from one of those vending machines right there, which are outside Kyoto train station, which is super nifty because as you can see, the buses are right there. As for navigation, get your data sorted and use Google Maps, it’s as reliable as ever in Kyoto. Alternatively, you can use the Arukumachi Kyoto route planner app, which is free on iOS and Android. Up next, my top tips for Kyoto’s surprisingly busy tourist hotspots. First up is Kyoto’s old town, Gion. This is the place to go for traditional Japan and my personal favourite; if you're a fan of Memoirs of a Geisha and all things historical and cultural, while topping up your Instagram feed, this is an absolute must-visit, though it can get rather busy... Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, is you guessed it, covered in gold. According to local custom the gold plating will purify negative energy. The temple itself is stunning although there isn’t a whole lot else to do here once you’ve got the obligatory photo. My top tip for visiting this popular tourist attraction: go early to avoid the crowds and then move on to my personal favourite, Ginkaku-ji, or the Silver Temple..

431kph Shanghai Maglev (Magnetic Levitation) train, the world's fastest commercially operating train

Watch I was wearing https://goo.gl/QfjEdA Backpack I use when traveling https://goo.gl/4MHTxa Shanghai - a booming metropolis in east China - is the first stop of many people when they travel to China. Want to feel the pulse of the city immediately? It is recommended to take the Shanghai maglev train if you are just arriving at Pudong International Airport of the city. You will be impressed by the amazingly fast speed of the train and have an exciting first experience in the city. Build with the technological help from Germany, SMT has been operated since the end of 2002. It is the world's first and only commercialized maglev train line in operation. It runs from Pudong International Airport to Longyang Rd. Station located at the intersection of Longyang Road and Baiyang Road in Pudong New Area. The fast and convenient train is operated by Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co., Ltd., which was set up in 2000. Comfortable Carriage of Maglev Any questions or complaints, you may go to the SMT Service Center established by the company on the second floor of the station.
