The Caucasus is an interesting region suspended between Europe and Asia. It is at the crossroad of the two continents and has a compelling blend of East and West. The 3 republics of Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia have a lot in common, despite each proudly retaining their unique features. We visited Tbilisi for the first time in Spring 2017 and we soon fell in love. So we decided to come back with a proper adventure. We started off in Baku, a cosmopolitan city whose recent history is intrinsically linked to the oil industry. Thousand of oil drilling machines are scattered in the Absheron peninsula, despite as of today, the main extraction comes from the platforms on the Caspian Sea. Baku urban pattern is a core historical center resembling an old Persian town of the Silk Road. Around this, there is the European city, built in the late 1800 and inspired to Western Europe. And then there is the modern city where old Soviet blocks are being teared down and replaced by futuristic constructions From Baku, we took the train to Tbilisi, Georgia. Having visited the city the previous year, we decided not to stay in the city center but go alternative and sleep in a hipster hotel built in an old sewing factory. From Tbilisi, we spent a day in the Kakheti region, famous for its wines We crossed the border to Armenia with a car. The road immediately turned to be more difficult as we followed the route across the Dabed canyon. We chose this way to visit to monasteries, Haghpath and Sahin, of an incredible beauty. It was a touching experience as we were the only visitors In Yerevan we had the opportunity to meet Naregh, on old schoolmate of Valentina, who decided to move to Armenia about a year ago. We spent a day with him and he told us about the recent Velvet Revolution and what to expect in Armenia. On the same day, we met with Yun and Nonno, who will be travelling with us for about a week Armenia has two incredible assets to offer to visitors: beautiful UNESCO monasteries and amazing landscapes. But it is not only that. Yerevan, which at first sight seemed quite uninspiring, turned to be an extremely lively city after dusk and at night, when it seemed that the entire Armenia was walking on the streets and enjoying the warm Summer nights In one of the visit to the monasteries, we met Giorgio, a student from Italy with Georgian origins. He is fond of Caucasian architecture, and was impressive to hear from him the various features and characteristics of the Armenian monastery. We gave him a ride with the car and visited a few places with him Crossing the border with Georgia was necessary to complete our coast-to-coast. We stopped in Vardzia, an ancient cave city and visited the fortress of Khertvisi. Both placed in an incredible canyon. Breathtaking The next stop was Batumi, on the Black sea. A sort of Soviet version of Atlantic City, Batumi was not our cup of tea. We much preferred the city of Kutaisi, where we enjoyed the local market, the cathedral and the nearby monasteries of Gelati and Motsameta In Kutaisi we left Nonno and Yun. They head north to visit the remote region of Svaneti. We had to go back, but before reaching Tbilisi, we stopped in Gori, the hometown of Josef Stalin, and Uplistikhe, another cave city near Gori #Armenia #Georgia #Azerbaijan #Caucasus #Travel DIRECTED Valentina Vitali Guglielmo Biason http://www.travelvideographers.com MUSIC Valor by Bryant Lowry The Inside Job by Hawksilver Sun and the Moon (remix) by Falls Race by Oboy Long Road to Infinity by Mikki Aglaganov Coming Back by Hawksilver Like an Angel by Strenght to Last Far from Home by Stephen Keech Escaping Light by Aaron Sprinkle

Full documentary about Georgia, this country is located in the Caucasus, along the black sea. It is a country with European vocation and western spirit with great landscape and cultural variety. Georgia. The secret in the Caucasus Georgia has protected its artistic heritage and been able to maintain the vibrancy of its unique traditions. It has conserved a biodiversity greater than that of some continents, and has a magnetism which draws people back to visit over and over again. Although as small as Switzerland, Georgia is big in all aspects; a progressive nation, European in attitude and Western in spirit; a real Caucasian country with the joy of the Mediterranean. The vast vineyards of the Eastern Region of Kakheti, home to the largest wineries in the nation, are a clear illustration of this passion. In Georgia, there are a considerable number of grape varieties, more than anywhere else in the world. In Kakheti, almost everything revolves around wine. Proof of this is the XVI century wine cellar in Velistsikhe, in which the traditional “kvevri” are still used: clay barrels buried underground that maintain a constant temperature to ensure optimal fermentation. Tbilisi (tiflis), founded as a fortress-city in the V century, is the nation’s capital, its largest city and has been admired by famous people such as Leon Tolstoy and Alexander Dumas. Every corner of Tbilisi is quite captivating. Its bewitching spell is cast over the whole of this safe and friendly metropolis in which guests are considered a “gift from God”. At the end of the harvest, colourful folkloric celebrations take place in the wine making areas. The fertile Valley of Alazani, in the Region of Kakheti, is renowned because of the excellence of its grapes and because it is the source of outstanding wines such as Khindzmarauli and Gurdjani. Sighnaghi is one of the smallest towns in the country, but it has the second longest wall in the world, after China, also known as “the city of love” is also celebrated for its renowned grape harvest. The Tusheti National Reserve is one of the most beautiful areas of Georgia. Vashlovani National Park, in the south-eastern part of the country, has a semi-desert ecosystem and is an excellent example of the varied bio-diversity to be found in Georgia. One of the 13 Assyrian Holy Fathers who arrived in Georgia in order to strengthen Christianity, David Gareja, is buried here, and on his tomb there is a stone that symbolizes the one that the distinguished Patriarch brought in his journey from the Holy Land. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is in the centre of the country and it constitutes 1% of the territory of Georgia. Borjomi-Kharagauli, surrounded by the magical atmosphere of the Lower Caucasus, is the most visited Park in Georgia and has a large number of recreational activities on offer. In 1830, it was rumoured that springs from the Borjomi-Kharagauli Nature Reserve contained healing properties, and 60 years later, the first bottling plant of the now world-famous Borjomi water, was created. It is unique because of its naturally mineralized hydro carbonated sodium and therapeutic qualities. Shatili is located on the narrow pass of Arghuni, on the northern slope of the Great Caucasus. Sixty percent of Georgian territory are mountains. There a lots of fantastic opportunities for all kind of people who like nature, who like mountains. There are five peaks in the Caucasus in Georgia over 5000 meters, which gives really great opportunities for the amateur climbers. Apart from mountaineering these mountains give brilliant opportunities just for those who like nature, so you can do two or three weeks continuous tracks in a totally wild environment, plus there are lots of opportunities for rafting, canoeing, canyoning or any mountain activities. Georgia has two ski resorts: Bakuriani, to the south of Borjomi, at an altitude of 1,700 metres has conditions that are ideal for family skiing. Gudauri, in the Upper Caucasus, at 2,000 metres, has steep slopes which will satisfy the most extreme athletes.

This region has a new language around every mountain. Over 50 languages and 7 language families! Learn why the Caucasus is one of the world's language hot zones. Subscribe for language: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=NativLang Be my patron: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=584038 ~ CORRECTIONS ~ - pronunciation of Ossetian (thanks to Taymuraz Tsalikov) ~ BRIEFLY ~ The Caucasus was runner-up in my patron poll, and then it won in the rematch. So, it's time we travel to this mountainous region and explore its complicated linguistic situation. We go through major languages, family by family, briefly meeting Indo-European languages like Armenian and Kurdish, Turkic ones like Azeri, and even a Mongolic tongue named Kalmyk Oirat. Then, we see how linguists draw a line between "languages of the Caucasus" and the indigenous "Caucasian languages". The Caucasian languages fall in three families: Northeast Caucasian, Northwest Caucasian, and Kartvelian in the south. Explore some of their intriguing features, including massive numbers of consonants and one of the earliest documented examples of something called "ergativity". Despite some similar features, these languages don't belong to the same family. In fact, they may not even be a true "linguistic area"! At the end, we're still left with the question: why so many languages? We'll consider how one linguist looks at the relationship between geography and the lives of language families. ~ CREDITS ~ Art, narration, animation and outro music by Josh from NativLang Doc full of sources for claims and credits for imgs, music and sfx: https://docs.google.com/document/d/187Rgxm4pSU058WQxMHn0TPjLhrn3vCL9MwrXOZWnJgQ/

Georgia sits astride the mighty Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas and offers a breath-taking variety of landscapes and habitats. The range of flora is absolutely astounding. Following the bloodless Rose Revolution of 2003 and the Russo-Georgian War of 2008, it is becoming a very popular trekking destination due to its beauty and the rich cultural heritage it offers. Wild camping is permitted almost everywhere, and rustic homestays in authentic mountain villages provide a great way to meet the local people. Our film was shot in July of 2017 and features some of the best trekking areas of Kazbegi, Khevsureti and Svaneti. The settlements featured include the highest permanently occupied village group in Eurasia - Ushguli. This documents our trip to Ushguli, a remote Georgian mountain village in the middle of the Caucasian mountains. To get there was a two-day trip along the Enguri river valley, with a stopover in Mestia, along roads that got progressively scarier. Beautiful and curious corner of the world! After spending my initial night in the capital of Tbilisi, I rented an SUV to drive to Kazbegi with a view of the Caucasus Mountains in my background. Upon reaching Kazbegi I did paragliding and later rented and bike to cycle to Juta valley located at 2150 m above sea level. Experience the feature story: features.bikemag.com/kazbegi/ What happens when four like-minded adventurers head into one of the world’s wildest mountain ranges with nothing but their mountain bikes and enough food to survive for 10 days? The answer? What doesn’t happen? Terrifying lightning storms. Raging-river crossings. Snow-covered glacial pass traverses. Mind-melting descents. Constant fights with vicious dogs. Tense encounters with over-zealous border-patrol guards. All of the above were just another day following “The Trail to Kazbegi,” a self-supported mountain-bike mission through the highest reaches of the Caucasus Mountains in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Our four-man team—adventure filmmaker Joey Schusler, Bike magazine editor Brice Minnigh, photographer Ross Measures and mountain man Sam Seward—spent half of June 2015 exploring the crown jewels of the Georgian High Caucasus on a feature assignment for Bike. Along the way our crew overcame countless obstacles and experienced some of the most spectacular scenery and trails they had ever encountered. They also were treated to the unparalleled hospitality of the Georgian people and the benign indifference of the elements on their quest to reach the magnificent Mount Kazbek. In the process, they cemented lasting friendships and proved, yet again, that life is simply better in the mountains.

The mountains are covered in clouds again. We check the weather forecast and it seems like nothing will change in the following five days. The weather seems to be better at the Back sea, so we decide to take the chance and try to enter Abkhazia, which was Georgia’s territory until early nineties, and Georgians and most other countries still consider it Georgia. The Russian-Abkhazian visa system seems incomprehensible, so we decide that it’s a good idea to find out more about entering the region, as this would also be useful information to other travellers. As a shortcut, we are going to take the Maikop- Tuapsi mountain pass, it appears to be a gravel road on the map, but truck drivers say we will pass there. 350 km covered today. The tourism season hasn’t started yet so finding accommodation is not a problem. An Abkhaz man named Miron lives in a house with his family and also offers travellers accommodation in the couple of free rooms they have. There’s a large roofed terrace in the yard with a kitchen and tables. Here, the family and guests communicate and socialize. The room costs 2000 rubles (35 euros) a day. Since the beginning of our stay here, we are surprised by our hosts’ hospitality. Miron offers us homemade red wine and snacks and spends a good share of his time talking to us about the war and relationship between Russians and Georgians. He has quite a lot to say, because he fought in the war and got badly injured. When we ask about restoring the relationship between Abkhazs and Georgians, he does not believe this will happen. He will never forget the war, maybe his children or grandchildren will, he adds. Our conversation is listened by his 12 year old son Hashcha, who adds that he won’t forget either.

They make a local version of khinkal, a favourite Caucasian dish similar to dumplings. All they need is flour, water, and meat, but it’s more difficult than expected. To get the water, Glen takes a donkey ride to the local spring. Things take an even stranger turn when the pair find the meat hanging as a big slab drying on the side of a house… next to the cow pats used as fuel! But in the end, everything turns out grand, and the ‘gastronauts’ pronounce the result ‘delicious’. Then the pair is whisked from the mountains down to the seashore, where they explore an ancient fortress in the oldest surviving city in modern Russia, Derbent. Afterwards, they learn to make a special local delicacy, lyavenge, made from katum, a fish found only in the Caspian Sea. On the way riding across some of the most beautiful mountains I've seen so far on this motorbike journey. Mount Kazbek and Mestia are insane and the whole ride was worth it. Some offroad riding in the mud too where the panniers proved not be that fall resistant but it was great practice and a heads up for what to expect ahead. The amount of cattle and other animals on public roads was impressive and something to watch out fore. Really funny at times what you would find on the road around the corner. Horses though, they are crazy. Enjoy this short motorcycle documentary of Georgia and the Caucasus region. Put together with the bits that I recorded back in 2014. My name is Pedro Mota and back in 2014 I left the Netherlands on a beautiful Honda Transalp dualsport motorcycle on a trip to the east end of Russia in Vladivostok. On the way there we would take a big detour through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. Little did I know back then that this would evolve into a years long motorcycle travel further taking me through Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the American continent.

Presented by Nathan Niemi, Univ. of Michigan The Greater Caucasus Mountains lie at the southern margin of Eurasia, and accommodate nearly 50% of present-day convergence in the Arabia-Eurasia continental collision zone. Despite containing some of the highest peaks in Europe, geologically recent caldera-forming volcanic eruptions, and a historic record of large, destructive earthquakes, the tectonic evolution and seismic hazard of this region are poorly known relative to other continental collision zones. New geologic data suggests that the Greater Caucasus are remarkably young, perhaps less than 6 million years old, and that the mountains accommodate most of the modern plate tectonic motion between the Arabian and Eurasian continents. The Greater Caucasus also display a number of characteristics that may be unique in active continental collision zones on Earth today, including considerable spatial variations in deformation rates measured by GPS positions, and deep (greater than 100 km) earthquakes. These characteristics lead to the inference that the Greater Caucasus may be transitioning from oceanic subduction to continental collision, capturing a fleeting process in the life cycle of plate tectonics. Thus, the region may be a remarkable natural laboratory to decipher the tectonic processes associated with the initiation of continental collision.

North Caucasus mountains is a fantastic place for stargazers and astrophotographers. A lot of hard-to-reach places without cellular network and any artificial light sources give the ability to see plenty of brilliant stars over high snow-covered peaks. Among these peaks you can find mount Elbrus - the highest mountain in Europe. This video was shot in 2014 during Nightscape.ru photo expedition. All night scenes were shot using Canon 6D camera, EF 16-35/2.8 LII USM lens and Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly.
