One Punch, 99 Years in Prison

09:04
James Ward, aged 22, was given a 10 month sentence for causing actual bodily harm to his Dad in a fight over a dog. 12 years later James is still in prison after being given a highly controversial Indefinite Imprisonment for Public Protection sentence (IPP) having set fire to the bed in his cell. VICE follow the lives of April, his distraught sister, who has campaigned tirelessly for his release and the rest of the family in the final 6 weeks before James' possible release date. With previous potential releases failing to materialise, the family are unsure whether they will ever see James out of prison again. As the family describe what feels like their own sentences waiting for James’ release, VICE learns of the effect that the IPP sentence has had on both the prosecuted and their families. With IPP sentences no longer being used, James is one of the last people to face spending the rest of their life on parole with the threat of jail hanging constantly over them. Reading Russian 2.20 - учебник, книжный, каталог

03:32
Ей этот учебник не по карману. Он покупает все его книги онлайн. В городе есть книжный магазин? Он включён в каталог? Он наказал её по всей строгости закона. FULL LESSON: http://www.ruskyed.com/READ2/read20a.html TRANSCRIPT: ----- Rusky Ed here with a lesson about books. See if you can translate the sample sentences before the end of the intro song. As you most likely realize, the Russian word for book is книга. BTW, книжка means booklet or notebook or sometimes even passport. Of course there's a lot that can be said about books and we will see the word for textbook in sample sentence one, which just happens to go a little something like this: Ей этот учебник не по карману. (She could not afford the textbook.) The word of interest here is учебник and учебник means textbook or sometimes manual. BTW, the literal meaning of this phrase would be something like "The textbook is not of her pocket" which is just an idiomatic way of saying that she could not afford the textbook. Next we have sample sentence two: Он покупает все его книги онлайн. (He buys all his books online.) Here we see the word онлайн which sounds almost just like online and means the same thing too! FYI, another way of phrasing this idea would be to say, Он покупает все его книги через интернет. Just like онлайн sounds like and means the same thing as online, so does интернет sound like and mean the same thing as the Internet! The third sample sentence is as follows: В городе есть книжный магазин? (Is there a book store in town?) Here we see the word книжный and книжный the adjective form of книга which of course means book. And now for sample sentence four which is like six sample sentences in one! First of all, all these sentences mean "Is it included in the index?" Secondly, here are the six translations for "Is it included in the index?" Он есть в каталоге? Есть ли он в каталоге? Он включён в каталог? Она есть в каталоге? Есть ли она в каталоге? Она включена в каталог? The focus word here is каталог and каталог means catalog or index. And finally we have: Он наказал её по всей строгости закона. (He threw the book at her.) The focus word here is закон and закон means law. BTW, you may have noticed that no books were mentioned in this sentence and so you probably realize that the literal meaning of this sentence is "He punished her to the full extent of the law." And now for a few bonus sentences and phrases: Она не могла позволить себе учебник. (She could not afford the textbook.) алфавитный указатель авторов каталог авторов (author index) предметный указатель (subject index) алфавитный указатель к книге (index to a book) The focus words for this lesson include: учебник (textbook) онлайн (online) книжный (book) каталог (catalog) закон (law)
