08:08
Every business, from startups to small businesses to the largest companies and agencies in the world, must have a strong brand to succeed in today's noisy marketplace. It’s true that a brand is more than a logo, but a strong brand starts with a great logo. But when it comes to logos and other written digital and print marketing materials, there's a lot of confusion about typefaces, fonts, and the law. You can face heavy fines and get into a lot of trouble if you don’t have a license to the fonts and typefaces you use. crowdspring has helped tens of thousands of the worlds best entrepreneurs and small businesses with logo design (and other design and naming services). We know a little bit about fonts, typefaces, logos and the law. Plus, it helps that before starting crowdspring, I was an intellectual property attorney (in fact, I've had my law degree for the past 23 years). Whether you're a business owner or designer: if you want to avoid running into legal problems with your logo, this video is for you. I talk about typefaces, fonts and the law. You won't be an expert, but you will know enough to ask the right questions. Do you have other questions about fonts and typefaces and the law or useful tips based on your own practice? I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Want to make your business stand out? Typography Tutorial - 10 rules to help you rule type

03:35
Graphic Design Tutorial: 10 Typography rules to help you improve your type skills. Get better at graphic design by understanding how to use type. Improve your layouts instantly by following these 10 easy to follow rules. How can you quickly apply typographic rules to regain control of your layouts by following these 10 golden rules of typography? These rules are distilled down from the things that I learned by going to Art Center College of Design. Generally speaking, there are two types of typography– expressive typography (type is visual, carries the meaning of the word and sometimes appears as physical shapes) and functional typography (type that is meant to be read). I will focus on the latter. When starting out, it is best to learn the fundamentals of good design: hierarchy (primary, secondary and tierchiary reads), flow (how a person “reads” the layout by following the movement of their attention), legibility (in Western culture, type is read top to bottom, left to right so it’s important to arrange type accordingly), grouping (organizing blocks of type in intelligent and logical groups) and interest, achieved through contrast (scale, texture, color, density, negative space). Use any typeface you like as long as it’s one of the following: Akzidenz Grotesque, Avenir, Avant Garde, Bell Gothic, Bodoni, Bembo, Caslon, Clarendon, Courier, Din Mittelschrift, Franklin Gothic, Frutiger, Futura, Garamond, Gill Sans, Gotham, Helvetica, Letter Gothic, Memphis, Meta, OCRB, Rockwell, Sabon, Trade Gothic, Trajan and Univers. _________________________________________________________________ Great books to learn more about typography: Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works by Erik Spiekermann http://amzn.to/2iNXwC8 Josef Müller Brockmann Pioneer of Swiss Graphic Design http://amzn.to/2k7o5Yb Typography Manual @2017 Chris Do https://blind.com/blog/typography-manual/ _________________________________________________________________ Animation by: Leo Dinh Red Cat Motion http://redcatmotion.com Music and sound design by: Adam Sanborne http://adamsanborne.com _ Listen to our podcast on iTunes: The Futur https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-futur/id1152604340?mt=2 Android Stitcher http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/aaron/the-futur HOW TO SUPPORT THE FUTUR: Purchase a Kit: http://theskool.co/collections/all or subscribe to the secret and private Master mind group on Facebook with exclusive videos not released anywhere else. What makes a truly great logo

04:45
Here's how a simple mark ends up meaning something big as a great logo. Joe Posner, and Michael Bierut (designer of the Hillary Clinton logo) explain. For more from Michael Bierut on graphic design, check out his book "How to use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, cry, and (every once in a while) change the world": http://www.amazon.com/How-Michael-Bierut/dp/0062413902 Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO About once a month, there's a new logo to fight about on the internet. The biggest one in recent memory was the highly controversial Hillary Clinton logo, which did not escape scrutiny from Vox.com either. But as a designer/filmmaker, something about these repeated discussions struck me as missing the point on what makes logos tick. It often has little to do with the subjective musings. So I called up Michael Bierut, the designer of that Hillary Clinton logo and countless others. He sat down with me and helped explain the elements of a great logo in the video above. Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. Rasmus Michaëlis & Torsten Lindsø - Typeface personality + variable fonts

18:32
What are the possibilities of a variable typeface? Recently, Rasmus Michaëlis and Torsten Lindsø have explored how a typeface could respond to sound for Chinese audio tech company Goertek. Through variable font technology, the design team made the letters sound sensitive to their surroundings. Placed on signage throughout Goertek’s R&D hub in China, the design will assist in way-finding and express the brand. Typefaces’ branding potential will only grow as it is combined with the evolving potential of the digital world and the variable font format creates new possibilities for bringing in elements into the design from outside the world of letters. Rasmus and Torsten will discuss the opportunities of a variable typeface in the perspective of branding supported by projects and sketches.

Which font represents the personality of your business? Typography is the art and science of typefaces. Dating back to the 15th century, it’s one of the most important aspects of design. Despite typography’s rich history, it’s often marginalised as simple ‘font choice’ and not given due credit as a significant part of an overall branding strategy. What you need to know: 1. Typefaces have personality. Does a crisp business suit or singlet and thongs best represent your business? 2. Keep your content and target audience in mind when choosing your typeface. 3. Google Fonts is a great place to start when choosing a font for headings and body copy (especially for the web). They are free fonts and can be utilised across all online platforms.

GAMEFACE : Developing Typefaces for the Xbox 360 and Other Devices

57:52
Google Tech Talks July, 15 2008 ABSTRACT The Xbox 360 game platform was released with a great deal of fanfare surrounding its new product design and user interface. The developers saw the need for a tight brand consistency with print, packaging, and product interface, and chose to commission a new typeface family for use throughout the brand. Steve presents the path to the Xbox 360's new look from the type designer's perspective: the evolution of the product, the design brief, the creative process, and the unique challenges of developing a font for less than optimal screen displays. Steve also discusses the business and technology of fonts, the work for the Android platform and, most importantly, why type matters in an age of multimedia and text messaging. Speaker: STEVE MATTESON STEVE MATTESON is the Director of Type Design for Ascender Corporation and has created fonts for use in various screen display environments and print publishing since 1987. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, Steve has an extensive background in typography, design and printing which he has applied to his development of high quality typefaces. His work can be found in user interface designs (such as Windows Vista, Xbox 360 and Google's Android Platform); in publishing (such as Pescadero Pro, Andy and Endurance Pro); and for corporate branding (such as Symantec, Microsoft and Alcon Labs). He resides in Louisville, CO with his wife, 2 kids and 2 Labrador Retrievers. A partial showing of Steve' Portfolio can be found here: http://ascendercorp.com/portfolio_commercial.html and here: http://ascendercorp.com/portfolio_custom.html

Logo Design Mistakes to Avoid

02:00
Logo design A logo helps in creating brand identity for a company. Logo is the first thing a reader may notice before reading the entire text. For any brand logo is an important element because they are the major graphical representation of an organization. The combination of colors, fonts and images provides the essential information that the company wants the customers to identify. This identity sticks to the brand for the rest of its existence. The unique values and services are presented in a memorable visual image. This uniqueness helps in distinguishing a particular brand from others in the competitive market. A logo displays the overall essence of the business and portrays that the business is professional, stable and reliable. A logo must be simple, memorable, timeless, appropriate and versatile. In actuality it is not an easy task to develop a simple logo. It is really a challenging job. Certain things need to be considered while developing a logo for a brand. Logos should be distinctive and easy to spot, the visuals used should be appropriate for the company and moreover the font should be legible Say goodbye to amateur designers. It is important that logo should be developed by some professional designer who has the capability to understand the real needs of the company, what it wants to deliver to the customers and how it wants the information to be perceived. Using the paint tools or pictures editing applications, one may be able to get the job done initially at petty price but eventually this will incur huge costs later. It is designing and not two minute noodles Proceed only if you are absolutely clear with what you want and what you don’t. this is critical so that the designer can use all his skills, ability and creativity in the right direction. Giving a second thought once the logo has been developed becomes meaningless. A typography can cause an issue Text only logos create the readability issues. How? This is your brand, it’s known to you very well. So what about the others who are new to your brand. Putting your company name in a swirly font can look fancy but if it is not comprehensible, it loses its significance. It must be made sure that the fonts clearly reads out the company’s name. Mind the pixel track Four general categories of logos exist: textual, illustrated, symbolic and a combination of these three. Textual logos use recognizable words as the logo (example: Walt Disney). The words appear in unique fonts, shapes and sizes. Illustrated logos are an illustration used as a logo (example: Pepsi-Cola’s red, white and blue circle). Symbolic logos tend to be abstract in design and can work well internationally (example: Nike’s swoosh). Combination logos are any mixture of the other three types (example :FedEx, whose textual logo also contains the arrow symbol in the white space between the capital E and the x) Accordingly the logo needs to be able to work in wide variety of sizes – from a business card to a billboard, a letter head to a pamphlet. To put everything in line make sure logo uses vector-based graphics that use geometrical primitives based on mathematical expressions. A vector graphic can be magnified by any amount without losing the quality which ensures a high-defined logo with a lot more flexibility. Don’t follow the trend, be a trendsetter Strategic planning gives a competitive advantage over rivals in the market. If you enter into market with the ideas that are already prevailing in the market, you are certainly not going to enjoy the benefits. It becomes very important that you come up with creative and innovative ideas. You need to create a new trend which others will willingly follow. Keep focus and not favorites in mind The client may ask to develop the design as per his favorite colors, designs, or any other such thing. It should be realized that a logo can’t be developed with these aspects. One has to think about think about what business is about, what needs will be served, how it will be perceived. Over excitement generally leads to too artistic or abstract designs which may not be graspable by all. Fonts Fonts in a logo design stand very significant. Be it a text oriented logo, symbolic logo, or a logo with a tagline, the fonts need to be checked. They should be relevant to the category and consumer and must be aligned. Usage of too many font styles is not recommended as it diverts the attention from main content and purpose. For more on Logo Design, write to us: [email protected]

empower® Brand Strengthener for PowerPoint

04:50
Your brand is a huge asset, but only 30% of all presentations comply with the brand guidelines. The reason? Everyone needs to create presentations, but most of us don’t know the brand guidelines by heart. So we just go ahead and create presentations that are based on old templates and update the formatting slightly. empower solves this problem by implementing your brand guidelines into PowerPoint. Let’s review the font and color pickers, on the empower ribbon: they only contain the fonts, font sizes and colors that are defined in your corporate design. For the colors, you can customize the number of colors that are available for font, line and fill colors separately. In addition, empower also ensures that no one can create a presentation using , the wrong template. When you first launch PowerPoint, a master dialog pops up that allows you to choose one of the approved company templates. You can also define a default template that will open automatically whenever you start PowerPoint. And if your company template changes, empower will not only update the standard template on everyone’s computer, but will also show an update message in any presentation that is using the old master. Another common challenge within organizations is image management: although every organization has a set of licensed images that can be used for PowerPoint presentations, most users don’t know where to find them. So they turn to Google. This not only causes legal issues, but also doesn’t represent the brand properly. empower has an elegant solution to this problem: let’s create a slide with an image to support our message. With empower, this is a thing of the past. Instead of an Explorer Window, the library opens and shows all company images that have been provided centrally by the marketing department. These images are correctly sized, pre-screened for clarity, and on-brand. It now becomes trivial to browse, search, select and insert the best company approved images for your slide. Branded slide templates, icons, charts and tables will also ensure that users will create consistent presentations based on your brand guidelines. Everyone can create slides like a brand designer by using the elements created from your design experts directly within PowerPoint. The empower ribbon ensures users will create content that is 100% consistent with your brand. In order to ensure that people use the empower ribbon, you can easily customize empower so that its name is your company name and the ribbon and the side bar and all windows will use your corporate color instead. This will make it clear to everybody that they should use this ribbon if they want to create a presentation for work. So you have seen how presentations created with empower will match your brand guidelines going forward. But what about the thousands of existing slides and presentations that have been created in the past and do not comply with your brand and corporate design. Empower provides a set of tools for this challenge as well. With a click of a button, the corporate design check automatically reviews your entire presentation against a set of rules, and displays any violations that it has found. In our case, empower found several problems. First, we can see that we are using an outdated master template. We must fix this problem first, as it is impossible to create a brand consistent presentation without doing so. Now fixed, we can solve the other issues. Incorrect font colors are grouped by color so we can very quickly resolve this issues by selecting a new valid color from the empower color picker. The same holds true for the fill color and line color. Lastly, we can remove of all the extraneous font types that shouldn’t be in our presentation. So, in less than 30 seconds, we were able to resolve more than 100 corporate design issues. If you need 100% compliance on brand guidelines, you can also make it mandatory to pass the corporate design test before allowing empower users to save content to the central slide library! Last but not least, let’s talk about layouts. A master consists of several layouts and quite often, new layouts will be imported as you copy & paste slides back and forth. The results are inconsistent slides and footers. Empower offers a master corrector that intelligently knows the number of valid layouts, finds the best match for unwanted layouts, and then deletes these layouts. If we click here, all the magic happens in the background. Looking at the layouts, we see that they have been corrected. And as a bonus: the footers have been fixed and all slides are consistent again. empower helps you improve your old PowerPoint content and ensures that new presentations will always comply with your brand guidelines.

Practice is the way to get there. 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 Spartan Logo Design Challenge details: https://www.dropbox.com/s/92c8srlwxd0bwuw/spartan-challenge.zip?dl=0 This is a cross channel event with 2 amazing people: Jonathan Rudolph @logoinspirations IG http://www.logoinspiration.net Will Paterson @WillPat IG https://willpaterson.space ____________________________________________________ Get the typography manual here: 📕 https://www.thefutur.com/design-students-build-first-portfolio-get-first-design-job/ Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works, Third Edition 📕 http://amzn.to/2pvpSVx _________________________________________________ Listen to the Futur podcast on iTunes: 🎙 https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-futur/id1209219220?mt=2 Android Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/aaron/the-futur Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Itg3hr5bs4a54w73o2toxcr4vhe 🔹 HOW TO SUPPORT THE FUTUR: Purchase a Kit:https://www.thefutur.com/shop/ subscribe to the secret and private Master mind group on FB with bi-weekly webinars & exclusive videos not released anywhere else. 🔹 Music on the show from Art-list.io http://goo.gl/22VpQi 🔹 Use our Amazon Affiliate Link: http://astore.amazon.com/chrisdo-20 Buy useful design tools from Creative Market: https://creativemarket.com/?u=ChrisDo _________________________________________________ Connect with us online: 🔔 http://thefutur.com https://www.facebook.com/theFuturisHere/ https://twitter.com/thefuturishere Need brand strategy help? How to make a font - Gravity new typeface

03:30
Typography video. Recommended 720HD! Gravity is a typographic experiment, born from the desire to deepen my knowledge about this discipline. Gravity is also a new geometric sans serif typeface designed with balance and large counters. The typeface uses the "gravity" as a distinctive, functional and aesthetic feature of the font. It is going to be used as official font by "Accademia di Belle Arti Palermo". Today, Gravity is a family composed by 4 weights: Book, Bold, Light and UltraLight and their italic versions. Gravity is also my first typeface. Hope you enjoy! Download the whole family here: http://www.dafont.com/gravity.font If you like it, appreciate it on behance: http://www.behance.net/gallery/Gravity-New-free-font-experiment/3407691 Tools: Fontlab Studio, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, Final Cut Pro Thank you! © Vincenzo Vuono www.vincenzovuono.com Music: copyright by El Ten Eleven. Typography Dojo: Combining Typefaces with Bethany Heck

01:28:14
Designers are often encouraged to limit the number of typefaces they use and given generic lists of type combinations in place of more in-depth discussion around type combinations and multi typeface systems. Bethany Heck wants to improve the way typographers talk to each other about how we combine typefaces and remove the negative stigma attached to typefaces that use a large number of font families. Join us for a fun conversation about combining fonts and faces with Bethany. Bethany Heck is the Executive Design Director for Platform Design at Vox Media and the creator of the Eephus League brand of baseball scorebooks. She strives to create powerful visual experiences with strong typographic elements regardless of medium, and has worked with the likes of Microsoft, IBM, EA Sports, ESPN and more, and her work has appeared in New York Magazine, the New Yorker, Wired, Smashing Magazine, Print and several other international publications and art exhibitions. ======================== Register for upcoming Typography Dojo Sessions: https://www.crowdcast.io/typeed To learn more about TypeEd, visit our site: http://type-ed.com/ Enroll in our FREE course to learn how to Design for the Reader: https://type-ed.com/sevendays
