How to Avoid Legal Issues When Using Typefaces and Fonts in Your Small Business Logo
Every business, from startups to small businesses to the largest companies and agencies in the world, must have a strong brand to succeed in today's noisy marketplace. It’s true that a brand is more than a logo, but a strong brand starts with a great logo. But when it comes to logos and other written digital and print marketing materials, there's a lot of confusion about typefaces, fonts, and the law. You can face heavy fines and get into a lot of trouble if you don’t have a license to the fonts and typefaces you use. crowdspring has helped tens of thousands of the worlds best entrepreneurs and small businesses with logo design (and other design and naming services). We know a little bit about fonts, typefaces, logos and the law. Plus, it helps that before starting crowdspring, I was an intellectual property attorney (in fact, I've had my law degree for the past 23 years). Whether you're a business owner or designer: if you want to avoid running into legal problems with your logo, this video is for you. I talk about typefaces, fonts and the law. You won't be an expert, but you will know enough to ask the right questions. Do you have other questions about fonts and typefaces and the law or useful tips based on your own practice? I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Want to make your business stand out? Typography Tutorial - 10 rules to help you rule type
Graphic Design Tutorial: 10 Typography rules to help you improve your type skills. Get better at graphic design by understanding how to use type. Improve your layouts instantly by following these 10 easy to follow rules. How can you quickly apply typographic rules to regain control of your layouts by following these 10 golden rules of typography? These rules are distilled down from the things that I learned by going to Art Center College of Design. Generally speaking, there are two types of typography– expressive typography (type is visual, carries the meaning of the word and sometimes appears as physical shapes) and functional typography (type that is meant to be read). I will focus on the latter. When starting out, it is best to learn the fundamentals of good design: hierarchy (primary, secondary and tierchiary reads), flow (how a person “reads” the layout by following the movement of their attention), legibility (in Western culture, type is read top to bottom, left to right so it’s important to arrange type accordingly), grouping (organizing blocks of type in intelligent and logical groups) and interest, achieved through contrast (scale, texture, color, density, negative space). Use any typeface you like as long as it’s one of the following: Akzidenz Grotesque, Avenir, Avant Garde, Bell Gothic, Bodoni, Bembo, Caslon, Clarendon, Courier, Din Mittelschrift, Franklin Gothic, Frutiger, Futura, Garamond, Gill Sans, Gotham, Helvetica, Letter Gothic, Memphis, Meta, OCRB, Rockwell, Sabon, Trade Gothic, Trajan and Univers. _________________________________________________________________ Great books to learn more about typography: Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works by Erik Spiekermann http://amzn.to/2iNXwC8 Josef Müller Brockmann Pioneer of Swiss Graphic Design http://amzn.to/2k7o5Yb Typography Manual @2017 Chris Do https://blind.com/blog/typography-manual/ _________________________________________________________________ Animation by: Leo Dinh Red Cat Motion http://redcatmotion.com Music and sound design by: Adam Sanborne http://adamsanborne.com _ Listen to our podcast on iTunes: The Futur https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-futur/id1152604340?mt=2 Android Stitcher http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/aaron/the-futur HOW TO SUPPORT THE FUTUR: Purchase a Kit: http://theskool.co/collections/all or subscribe to the secret and private Master mind group on Facebook with exclusive videos not released anywhere else. Logo Design Mistakes to Avoid
Logo design A logo helps in creating brand identity for a company. Logo is the first thing a reader may notice before reading the entire text. For any brand logo is an important element because they are the major graphical representation of an organization. The combination of colors, fonts and images provides the essential information that the company wants the customers to identify. This identity sticks to the brand for the rest of its existence. The unique values and services are presented in a memorable visual image. This uniqueness helps in distinguishing a particular brand from others in the competitive market. A logo displays the overall essence of the business and portrays that the business is professional, stable and reliable. A logo must be simple, memorable, timeless, appropriate and versatile. In actuality it is not an easy task to develop a simple logo. It is really a challenging job. Certain things need to be considered while developing a logo for a brand. Logos should be distinctive and easy to spot, the visuals used should be appropriate for the company and moreover the font should be legible Say goodbye to amateur designers. It is important that logo should be developed by some professional designer who has the capability to understand the real needs of the company, what it wants to deliver to the customers and how it wants the information to be perceived. Using the paint tools or pictures editing applications, one may be able to get the job done initially at petty price but eventually this will incur huge costs later. It is designing and not two minute noodles Proceed only if you are absolutely clear with what you want and what you don’t. this is critical so that the designer can use all his skills, ability and creativity in the right direction. Giving a second thought once the logo has been developed becomes meaningless. A typography can cause an issue Text only logos create the readability issues. How? This is your brand, it’s known to you very well. So what about the others who are new to your brand. Putting your company name in a swirly font can look fancy but if it is not comprehensible, it loses its significance. It must be made sure that the fonts clearly reads out the company’s name. Mind the pixel track Four general categories of logos exist: textual, illustrated, symbolic and a combination of these three. Textual logos use recognizable words as the logo (example: Walt Disney). The words appear in unique fonts, shapes and sizes. Illustrated logos are an illustration used as a logo (example: Pepsi-Cola’s red, white and blue circle). Symbolic logos tend to be abstract in design and can work well internationally (example: Nike’s swoosh). Combination logos are any mixture of the other three types (example :FedEx, whose textual logo also contains the arrow symbol in the white space between the capital E and the x) Accordingly the logo needs to be able to work in wide variety of sizes – from a business card to a billboard, a letter head to a pamphlet. To put everything in line make sure logo uses vector-based graphics that use geometrical primitives based on mathematical expressions. A vector graphic can be magnified by any amount without losing the quality which ensures a high-defined logo with a lot more flexibility. Don’t follow the trend, be a trendsetter Strategic planning gives a competitive advantage over rivals in the market. If you enter into market with the ideas that are already prevailing in the market, you are certainly not going to enjoy the benefits. It becomes very important that you come up with creative and innovative ideas. You need to create a new trend which others will willingly follow. Keep focus and not favorites in mind The client may ask to develop the design as per his favorite colors, designs, or any other such thing. It should be realized that a logo can’t be developed with these aspects. One has to think about think about what business is about, what needs will be served, how it will be perceived. Over excitement generally leads to too artistic or abstract designs which may not be graspable by all. Fonts Fonts in a logo design stand very significant. Be it a text oriented logo, symbolic logo, or a logo with a tagline, the fonts need to be checked. They should be relevant to the category and consumer and must be aligned. Usage of too many font styles is not recommended as it diverts the attention from main content and purpose. For more on Logo Design, write to us: [email protected]

Do Fonts Matter For Your Personal Brand? Yes!
http://kennyharper.rocks/fonts-matter-personal-brand-yes/ Choosing Fonts Congruent With Your Brand Message Fonts and typography, just like colors can communicate a lot about your brand. There are many different types of fonts, some are sophisticated and elegant, while others are bold or playful. Choosing fonts that clearly represent who you are, what you’re about, and the purpose you serve is important. You want to select your salt and collect your fonts with intent. You really want to establish your reason for choosing those particular fonts. Guidelines For Selecting Your Fonts You can select maybe two or three different brand fonts, one you may use only for specialty sort of graphics or specialty messaging, some you may use for headlines, and others you might use for body copy. There are serif fonts, sans-serif fonts, slab fonts, old fonts, minimalistic fonts, all types of different fonts. Now don’t go font crazy on me, some people, including myself at one point in time, think more is better and they want to choose a lot of different fonts, believing that they’re showing variety. By doing this they’re trying to appeal to a mass of different people and that’s not a good strategy. By trying to please everyone you typically please no one. You can tell who an amateur is by looking at a business card and seeing on it about 20 different font faces. It doesn’t communicate a clear message of who this person is, it’s mixed up. You don’t want to send out the message that you’re mixed up, you want to send out a message that you’re clear and know who you are. So choose your fonts wisely and then be consistent with using them. Consistency Is Key You’re going to use your fonts on your website, promotional collateral, on social media posts, etc. make sure to use your fonts consistently. When you are consistent in telling your story and letting people know who you are, they’re going to better understand it. You’re going to build trust and that’s how you start building deep and meaningful relationships. Take Action Take a look at the fonts that you’re using for your graphics and imagery, make sure you know what they are and that you’re using them consistently. If you have a team that works with you and helps create your marketing materials, make sure that they also know the fonts to use and have them available. Challenges You May Face There will be times when you’re using programs that may not have the fonts available, in this case try to find fonts that are as close to the chosen font as possible and if you can’t find any fonts that are similar, consider choosing a different font to use. In personal branding it’s about consistency. Don’t Forget Where The Term ‘Branding’ Came From Do you recall where the term branding came from? It began with farmers who were in the field fighting one another over whose cows belonged to whom. Then, someone had the brilliant idea of putting a mark on their cows in order to distinguish them from the other farmers’ cattle. Soon enough every farmer had their own mark, their own brand that they put on their livestock which carried over in their products. They didn’t go around changing their brand for different cows and their personalities, they kept the brand consistent.
CFF Maestricht – a font made from the handwriting of Jean-Paul Toonen
CFF Maestricht is a highly personal script font, custom made from the handwriting of local film producer Jean-Paul Toonen. His handwriting is very dynamic, artistic and a tasteful blend between roman and italic style. Perfect for elegant and beautiful artwork. CFF Maestricht is our joint gift to the beautiful city Maastricht. The lettering is originally written with the iconic fountain pen The Meisterstück 149 by Mont Blanc, Vienna. That’s a deep black precious resin pen with gold-coated details, surmounted by the white star emblem and finished with a handcrafted gold nib. The Meisterstück evolved into Montblanc’s design icon. The handwriting looks very irregular, but if you look carefully, it’s actually not. It has rhythm and flow, but certain letter combinations are consistent enough to function as the backbone of the font. It’s not just the shape of the letters but the arrangement of words that makes the text pop. By carefully selecting the correctly shaped letters we were able to make a digital version that is almost identical to the original handwriting, but still works well as a digital font, says René Verkaart. This way we preserved the flow, quirkiness and originality of the handwriting. We could connect certain letters in one combination, that would also work well in another combination. The alternate letters, swashes, and finals make the font really come alive, making it random enough to look realistic. This was a hell of a job, but we’re very proud we pulled it off. -Min font (type design)
This is part 'C' font of a 3 part series (named 'Hidden characters') it's the type design for '-min'. When reading a text a dyslectic person can experience only seeing the top or buttom part of the the characters and lines of text. Because of this words become free standing shapeless pieces which become unreadable. -min is a type design based on this fact and shows the remain shapes of the characters in different stages.

GAMEFACE : Developing Typefaces for the Xbox 360 and Other Devices
Google Tech Talks July, 15 2008 ABSTRACT The Xbox 360 game platform was released with a great deal of fanfare surrounding its new product design and user interface. The developers saw the need for a tight brand consistency with print, packaging, and product interface, and chose to commission a new typeface family for use throughout the brand. Steve presents the path to the Xbox 360's new look from the type designer's perspective: the evolution of the product, the design brief, the creative process, and the unique challenges of developing a font for less than optimal screen displays. Steve also discusses the business and technology of fonts, the work for the Android platform and, most importantly, why type matters in an age of multimedia and text messaging. Speaker: STEVE MATTESON STEVE MATTESON is the Director of Type Design for Ascender Corporation and has created fonts for use in various screen display environments and print publishing since 1987. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, Steve has an extensive background in typography, design and printing which he has applied to his development of high quality typefaces. His work can be found in user interface designs (such as Windows Vista, Xbox 360 and Google's Android Platform); in publishing (such as Pescadero Pro, Andy and Endurance Pro); and for corporate branding (such as Symantec, Microsoft and Alcon Labs). He resides in Louisville, CO with his wife, 2 kids and 2 Labrador Retrievers. What makes a truly great logo
Here's how a simple mark ends up meaning something big as a great logo. Joe Posner, and Michael Bierut (designer of the Hillary Clinton logo) explain. For more from Michael Bierut on graphic design, check out his book "How to use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, cry, and (every once in a while) change the world": http://www.amazon.com/How-Michael-Bierut/dp/0062413902 Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO About once a month, there's a new logo to fight about on the internet. The biggest one in recent memory was the highly controversial Hillary Clinton logo, which did not escape scrutiny from Vox.com either. But as a designer/filmmaker, something about these repeated discussions struck me as missing the point on what makes logos tick. It often has little to do with the subjective musings. So I called up Michael Bierut, the designer of that Hillary Clinton logo and countless others. He sat down with me and helped explain the elements of a great logo in the video above. Sunblock Pro Fonts from Grype
Sunblock Pro Fonts from Grype Sunblock Pro Fonts from Grype About this font black, bold, branding, clean,Coppertone, corporate, extra condensed, geometric, light, logotype Clean and geometric deco sans typefaces have been used in a range of scientific publications, corporate logotypes, and beauty products over the years. However, a typeface of this style has yet to have an expansive range of widths and weights to become a design workhorse, until now. The Sunblock family finds its origin of inspiration in the Coppertone sunscreen company logo, and from there expands to type megafamily. More Sunblock celebrates the rounded geometric forms of deco and bauhaus lettering through a compressed lens, transcending its brand inspired origin to give birth to a font family that pulls on modern and historical styles. It inherited its soothing tone from the limited character logotype that inspired it, and goes on to include a lowercase, small caps, and a comprehensive range of widths and weights, creating a straightforward, uncompromising collection of typefaces that lend a solid foundation and a broad range of expression for designers. Heres whats included with the Sunblock Collection bundle: 643 glyphs per style - including Capitals, Lowercase, Numerals, Punctuation and an extensive character set that covers multilingual support of latin based languages. (see the 7th graphic for a preview of the characters included) 21 fonts in 5 width subfamilies: Ultra Condensed, Extra Condensed, Condensed, Semi Condensed, & Standard. 5 weights per subfamily (except Ultra Condensed): Thin, Light, Regular, Bold, & Black. Fonts are provided in both TTF & OTF formats. The TTF format is the standard go to for most users, although the OTF and TTF function exactly the same. Heres why the Sunblock Collection is for you: You're in need of a deco geometric font family with a big range of weights and widths You're love that Coppertone letter styling, and want to design anything within that genre You're looking for an alternative to Chalet Comprime with a more versatile range of styles You're looking to start up your own derivative Sunscreen product line You just like to collect quality fonts to add to your design arsenal Available at : black, bold, branding, clean,Coppertone, corporate, extra condensed, geometric, light, logotype Gallery and Sample : http://myfonts.us/4XvKY9 Subscribe our channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCj3BtcyJfZAIAvJIpXpoNRw

Download COUTURA Sans Fonts by ILOTT-TYPE
About this font family http://myfonts.us/84WuRu Inspired by the elegance of Herman Zapfs designs crossed with the readability of early 20th century Gothic fonts by Morris Fuller Benton, COUTURA is a sans-serif with a visible stroke contrast and a humanist tone of voice. The large x-height seen in fonts like News Gothic and Palatino increases legibility and condensed proportions give excellent readability making it perfect for newspaper and magazine publishing. A typeface that can serve for both body text and titling the uppercase excels for headlines and renders beautiful brand names when tracked out. More It sets well with both a serif or sans serif complement and has various open type features including: 12 standard ligatures, 3 discretionary ligatures, tabular figures, old style figures as well as European accents.
