Bobby Darin - Beyond the Sea

02:53
Bobby Darin's version of Charles Trenet's classic "Beyond The Sea" was recorded 1959 before the swing era was dying out. Although "La Mer," the classic, talks of white seagulls, tall wet reeds, rusty houses, and clear gulfs, "Beyond the Sea" talks about a man and his love. This is the "original" version of Bobby Darin's, and I am surprised no one has uploaded a recorded version.

Phil Phillips - Sea Of Love

02:26
"Sea of Love" is a song written by John Phillip Baptiste (aka Phil Phillips) and George Khoury. Phillips' 1959 recording of the song peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK, Marty Wilde covered the song, and Phillips' version failed to chart there. It was the only top 40 chart song for Phillips, who never recorded another hit. The song has been covered by a number of artists since then, most notably by The Honeydrippers, whose version (from the album The Honeydrippers: Volume One) reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1985[3] and #1 on the adult contemporary chart in 1984. Tom Waits gave the song a darker twist for the soundtrack to the 1989 Harold Becker film Sea of Love starring Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin, and Waits included it on his 2006 collection Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards. "Sea of Love" had made the Top 40 just one other time, when Del Shannon took it to #33 in 1981. Baptiste, who was working as a bellboy in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA, wrote "Sea of Love" for a love interest. He was introduced to local record producer George Khoury, who brought Baptiste into his studio to record the song. At Khoury's request, Baptiste took the stage name of Phil Phillips. The song, originally credited to Phil Phillips with The Twilights, was released on a small record label owned by Khoury, but due to its success was eventually leased to Mercury Records. Despite the song's success, Phillips claims that he has only ever received US$6,800 for recording it. The song was the subject of the 1989 Harold Becker film Sea of Love starring Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin. The 2007 film Juno features a cover version of the song by Cat Power in its soundtrack. The Cat Power version was also featured in an episode of the television show Pretty Little Liars. It was also used in the 1989 TV movie Sweet Bird Of Youth, which starred Elizabeth Taylor. The song was featured at the end of an episode of The Simpsons entitled "Future-Drama" in 2005. It also can be heard in the 2008 episode "The Burns and the Bees", put on by Moe while the queen bee is making out with all the little drones. In "Rumba" (2008), Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon sing this song. In American Dad!, Stan plays the song at the bottom of the ocean for Francine in Stan Time (2009). A skipping record of the song is played during a scene in the 2000 film Frequency. It's also heard in Look Who's Talking Too (1990), Striking Distance (1993), Mr. Wrong (1996), De Zeemeerman (1996), Brooklyn's Finest (2009), and Private Practice (2010). ~SOURCE: Wikipedia PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads among multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948's oldies classics. Bobby Darin - Beyond The Sea (ATCO Records 1959)

03:00
"Beyond the Sea" is a 1945 contemporary pop romantic love song by Jack Lawrence, with music taken from the song "La Mer" by Charles Trenet. Trenet had composed "La Mer" (which means "the Sea") with French lyrics. It had some differences to the English-language version that Lawrence later wrote. Trenet's French version was a homage and ode to the changing moods of the sea, while Lawrence, by just adding one word "Beyond" to the title, gave him the start whereby he made the song into a love song. It has been recorded by many artists, but Bobby Darin's version released in late 1959 is the best known by many, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, No. 15 on the US R&B Chart, and No. 8 in the UK Singles Chart in early 1960. Before Bobby Darin's, two recordings reached the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Benny Goodman's version charted in 1948, and was featured in the Cary Grant/Betsy Drake romantic comedy Every Girl Should Be Married. Roger Williams' recording reached No. 37 in 1955. Deana Martin recorded Beyond the Sea in 2013. The song was released on her album, Destination Moon, in 2013 by Big Fish Records. American R&B singer George Benson recorded an R&B version of the song under the title "Beyond The Sea (La Mer)." It was released on Warner Bros. This version entered the UK Singles Chart on 20 April 1985. It reached a peak position of no. 60 and remained on the chart for three weeks. The first recording of Beyond the Sea was by Harry James and His Orchestra on December 22, 1947 and the first recording of La Mer was by French jazz musician Roland Gerbeau in December 1945. Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto; May 14, 1936 – December 20, 1973) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor in film and television. He performed jazz, pop, rock and roll, folk, swing, and country music. He started his career as a songwriter for Connie Francis. He recorded his first million-selling single, "Splish Splash", in 1958. This was followed by "Dream Lover", "Mack the Knife", and "Beyond the Sea", which brought him worldwide fame. In 1962 he won a Golden Globe Award for his first film, Come September, co-starring his first wife, Sandra Dee. During the 1960s he became more politically active and worked on Robert F. Kennedy's Democratic presidential campaign. He was present on the night of June 4/5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles at the time of Kennedy's assassination. During the same year, he discovered he had been raised by his grandmother, not his mother, and that the girl he thought was his sister was actually his mother. These events deeply affected Darin and sent him into a long period of seclusion. Although he made a successful comeback (in television) his health was beginning to fail, as he had always expected, following bouts of rheumatic fever in childhood. This knowledge of his vulnerability had always spurred him on to use his musical talent while still young. He died at the age of 37 following a heart operation in Los Angeles. Although unknown to the public, his health was dangerously fragile and strongly motivated him to succeed within the limited lifetime he feared he would, and ultimately did, have. In 1960 after romancing singer Connie Francis, and being run out of the house by her strict Italian father, breaking her heart, Darin married "Gidget" actress Sandra Dee, whom he met while making his first film Come September (1961). Beyond the Sea - Nat King Cole's fan "Beyond the Sea" is a 1945 contemporary pop romantic love song by Jack Lawrence, with music taken from the song "La Mer" by Charles Trenet. It has been covered by many artists including Bobby Darin and Benny Goodman. Unfortunately, my favorite singer Nat King Cole didn’t record this song during his lifetime. In this video, I (Not Cole = Nat King Cole’s fan) sang this song imitating Nat King Cole’s way of singing.

Beyond the Sea Bobby Darin Tribute Live Lyrics SILK.dv

05:05
Bobby Darin "Beyond the Sea" popularized by BIOSHOCK - FINDING NEMO - Robbie Williams - Kevin Spacey William Silk performs the 1959 Bobby Darin Classic "Beyond the Sea" Live accompanied by a fabulous big band of 18 singing Jazz musicians. Silk is really grateful to the band and the audience, for this opportunity to pay tribute to great entertainer Bobby Darin. Thanks everyone! "Beyond the Sea" is originally a French song (chanson) "La Mer" from the 1930s written by and performed by the great French singer songwriter Charles Trenet. Bobby D swung through France in the 1950s making a movie for Hollywood with Sandra Dee and this is no doubt where he first heard the song. Good old Darin took it in swing time and remade himself a classic hit that lives long, long after he has passed away. Bobby left us very young, in his mid 30s, during the 1970s. Had he lived a long life, we would be following him today, much like we did Sinatra in his later career - and Tony Bennett more recently. RIP Bobby - we miss you! This arrangement stays pretty close to the original, so it will also be familiar to Disney fans of the movie "Finding Nemo", where it appeared as the soundtrack theme song at the end of that movie when the title credits roll, sung by Englishman Robbie Williams. RW is also a fan of swing, as was made apparent in his 2001 Royal Albert Hall Swing Tribute concert, where again he sang this classic song live in true Bobby Darin fashion. You could tell how he really loves this song in that performance. I'd also like to give special mention too to Kevin Spacey, who pulled off the fabulous bio-pic of Bobby Darin's life, also called "Beyond the Sea" in 2005. Kevin did a great job of capturing much of magic of Bobby Darin's style and the spirit of the era of live entertainment, when it was live cabaret shows and Las Vegas live shows. More recently, the Irish hit female vocal group Celtic Woman have come up with a very different version of "Beyond the Sea" that is closer to the original French version and mystical sounding too. Hats off to you ladies! Oddly enough, this song has found another revival a few years ago with the computer game playing audience, courtesy of BioShock - many people will recognize this theme as the trailer music to the launch of that hit game. Hang around to the end of the video, when Silk ad-libs a monologue in English, French and Japanese. Since the audience and band are mostly made up of non-native English speakers, the lyrics have been added to the video to make it easier to follow. Hope you enjoy it! Schwing-a-ding-ding!!

Beyond The Sea ~ Bobby Darin ~ 1080p HD

"Beyond the Sea" is a 1946 contemporary pop song with music taken from the song "La Mer" by Charles Trenet and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. Trenet had composed "La Mer" (which means "The Sea") with French lyrics totally different and unrelated to the English language version that Lawrence composed. Trenet's French version was a homage and ode to the changing moods of the sea, while Lawrence, by just adding one word "Beyond" to the title, gave him the start whereby he made the song into one of a lover pining for a lost love. It has been recorded by many artists, but Bobby Darin's version released in 1959 is the best known by many, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, #15 on the US R&B Chart, and #8 in the UK. Somewhere beyond the sea somewhere waiting for me my lover stands on golden sands and watches the ships that go sailin Somewhere beyond the sea she's there watching for me If I could fly like birds on high then straight to her arms I'd go sailin' It's far beyond the stars it's near beyond the moon I know beyond a doubt my heart will lead me there soon We'll meet beyond the shore we'll kiss just as before Happy we'll be beyond the sea and never again I'll go sailin' I know beyond a doubt my heart will lead me there soon We'll meet (I know we'll meet) beyond the shore We'll kiss just as before Happy we'll be beyond the sea and never again I'll go sailin' no more sailin' so long sailin' bye bye sailin'...
