What do I mean by draft archetypes? In draft, you construct a 40 card deck using cards you pick during that draft. There are always a collection of commonly drafted archetypes, such as in Shadows over Innistrad there was an often drafted Black / Green delirium deck and a Blue Green clue deck. Or how in Battle for Zendikar there was a landfall deck, and an ally deck, and so forth. Battle Decks take this basic premise, and create a 60 card version of that deck, sometimes even using cards from older sets that will work effectively to serve that deck’s theme or needs. As a result, Battle Decks are kind of like a Limited Constructed deck: a 60 card full version of a 40 card draft deck. With the now discontinued intro packs, the goal was to provide a weak deck that could then be upgraded using booster packs, a goal that was seldom met in a satisfactory fashion. But Battle decks are already strong for what they are, and unlike Intro Packs, they contain 3-4 of their cards, instead of 1-3X, meaning that you get consistent gameplay and feel like you are playing a real game of Magic. As a result, Battle deck are well-designed, heavily themed, and play really well against one another. And quick too! No 5 hour long game of EDH to slog through. Battle Decks play like really, really strong draft decks. They are what Intro Packs always should have been: full, complete, powerful and REAL decks of Magic that can be purchased cheap and effectively and allow you to get instant games of Magic. While these may not have anything in the way of financial value, the deck construction and interplay is excellent, and a far better experience than most of the other preconstructed decks Wizards of the Coast floods your local game store with. While these are NOT of any interest to Standard players, they are the ideal product for new players, returning players, and casual players, for anyone looking for a fast, fun time playing Magic.

MTG - Is it worth it to buy a Rookie Deck for learning Magic: The Gathering?

Rookie Decks are made by the famous Card Kingdom, with brand new players in mind. Touted as ideal for casual, new and returning players, and priced at only 5.99 each, have Rookie decks finally cracked the code of where and how to start playing Magic the Gathering, or are they just glorified welcome decks, leaving new players with the same problems as every other product. Let’s take a look! But first a quick word about this video and this channel: as you know Card Kingdom is the sponsor of this channel, and this product I am talking about today is made by our sponsor. As always, while card kingdom’s support of the channel is appreciated, this review and my evaluation are just that: my own, Card Kingdom did not even get any advanced screening of this video prior to it going to air. If you do want to check out rookie decks, there’s a special link in the video description that takes you right to them and also tells card kingdom that you came from me, which helps convey to them that support of this channel is worth it. You absolutely don’t have to use this link to check out rookie decks, but it does help show the value of the channel if you do, so I thank. And now, let’s begin with…. What are Rookie Decks? Rookie Decks are simple 60-card decks, made primarily for new players of Magic The Gathering. Containing commons and uncommons, like Battle Decks they are not a part of any specific format, but unlike Battle Decks they are constructed not from draft archetypes, but instead with the very basics of gameplay in mind. These decks give players a chance to experience the game in a clear and entertaining way. Instead of highlighting mechanics from the new set, each deck is crafted around a single keyword with color defining spells and creatures, giving new players a sense of each color’s capabilities. Before I even delve into the cards themselves, these learner inserts are really great. To be learning magic and have this little reminder sheet next to you on a bright, clear, and best fo all easy to parse card is something really helpful to new players. Follow, remember, and learn turn order easily, and be able to review the key color mechanics not only of your deck, but of each color with these little study guides. ALso, all Rookie decks come packed in a clear plastic case, so you get a basic storage box along with the ready to play beginner’s 60 card deck. That is a lot of value for only 5.99. Or is it?

What’s more, most of these commander decks contain a vast array of cards that have respectable financial value, or just are commander staples which makes upgrading the decks or building new commander decks using the pieces of these an acceptable and easy path for the player. Best of all, while power levels between the decks do vary, I maintain that there is no wrong answer when it comes to these commander precons. WHich one should I buy is a question i answer often with “Which one do you like the look and feel of? You can’t go wrong.” And I want to repeat that: You can’t go wrong. But still I am asked which are the best of the best, and so presented here are the top 5 commander decks you can purchase, based on power right out of the box. Note, these top 5 are all selling for above MSRP, some by a little, one by a lot, and I still encourage you to scour your local game stores and even online sellers to find those sweet deals of commander decks at 29 even 24.99 each, an amazing value every one of them. And with the Commander’s Anthology coming out in just a week, an expensive product with 4 of the classic commander decks in it plus a few other goodies, I thought I’d give a copy away to a subscriber. So if you’d like a free, brand new copy of the commander’s anthology all you have to do is be subscribed to this channel for a chance to win! MTG Deck Tech: Rainbow (5-Color) Zoo in Battle for Zendikar Standard!

12:22
In today's Standard, it's a fairly common strategy to just play all the best cards in your chosen colors with no regard for synergy. We've taken that philosophy to its logical conclusion with 5-Color Zoo, a deck that just plays all the best creatures in the format (except for Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, who I have some...special words for in this video). Your local game store holds Magic: The Gathering events from Friday Night Magic to the Standard Showdown to other in store events throughout the week. For new and returning players, attending these events has often been difficult, as booster packs are designed with the draft format in mind and not constructed, thus buying tons of booster packs to crack in order to build a competitive Friday Night Magic standard deck has never been an easy, affordable or even successful strategy. The only alternative, however, has been downloading decklists and buying singles to build a complete deck from scratch. An expensive option considering Standard decks usually run in the hundreds of dollars, if not more. Challenger Decks seek to offer what has never before been done: a self-contained, preconstructed standard deck which can be bought at an affordable price and played effectively and competitively at Friday Night Magic or other in store events, right out of the box. At an MSRP of 29.99, these challenger decks would need to offer quite a lot to new and returning players interested in them. Do they rise to the challenge? Let’s take a look! Now, For The Record, Wizards has attempted products like this before, most notably with the long running product line of Event Decks. But, as my own reviews cover if you are curious on the details, Event Decks were almost always terrible right out of the box, technically playable at FNM but not something that put up much of, if any of a fight. A new or returning player using an event deck would likely end up in last place, and many times did not even have a framework from which to build a competitive deck. Event Decks were jank, containing 1-2 copies of largely unplayed cards, never mythics and never value. Now, one criticism many of my videos have had in the past is an over emphasis on the importance of financial value in products such as these. My answer to that is simple: when products of the past such as Event Decks were so terrible, so unplayable at an event, so failing in the very thing they were designed to do, then all there is left to look at is financial value. In the case of challenger decks, everyone is talking about financial value because these contain mythics, and playsets and playsets of mythics, but for me, i don’t care. I do not care one bit about whether the sum total of the individual cards within these 29.99 decks are worth 60, 80 or even 10 dollars each. I will still look at financial value, but what matters here is the degree to which these are playable out of the box at Friday Night Magic.

MTG Deck Tech: Budget B/W Allies in Battle for Zendikar Standard!

14:10
This Budget Black/White Allies MtG deck will only cost you about $20! Dev (along with Igby the fat Magic cat) also bring you a non-budget list that you can build towards as the season goes on! Creatures (26) 4 Expedition Envoy 4 Zulaport Cutthroat 4 Kalastria Healer 3 Kor Bladewhirl 4 Serene Steward 4 Lantern Scout 2 Drana's Emissary 1 Brutal Hordechief Spells (11) 3 Duress 1 Ultimate Price 2 Valorous Stance 2 Stasis Snare 1 Utter End 1 Murderous Cut 1 March from the Tomb Lands (23) 4 Caves of Koilos 4 Ally Encampment 2 Mortuary Mire 1 Blighted Steppe 6 Plains 6 Swamp Sideboard Any configuration of w/b removal and/or disruption can work here, and both colors have a lot of options, so I envision a sideboard that looks something like this: 1 Duress 2Despise 2 Erase 1 Valorous Stance 1 Gideon's Reproach 3 Arashin Cleric 2 Surge of Righteousness 1 Tainted Blood 1 Stasis Snare 1 Utter End The deck can be easily upgraded without having to change all that much. We can take out the Kor Bladewhirls, Drana's Emissaries, and Brutal Hordechief along with maybe a Duress and a removal piece (I could also see playing a more focused suite of removal in the main deck that plays more copies of Valorous Stance, btw), and add Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, Sorin, Solemn Visitor, and Drana, Liberator of Malakir. We could also add Ruinous Path to the removal suite, and the W/B Personland (Shambling Vent) to the landbase. Other than that, not much actually changes in the main deck. If you wanted, you could go a slightly different direction with this deck, playing Nantuko Husk and Rally the Ancestors to get huge, out-of-nowhere wins around Kalastria Healer, Zulaport Cutthroat, and the Husk. Rally all your creatures back in (draining life with the Healer in the process), then sacrifice those same creatures to Nantuko Husk to get drains from Cutthroat. With multiple copies of Healer and Cutthroat (which isn't that hard to pull off with a Rally the Ancestors), this can often do upwards of 12-18 damage or more. Hope you enjoy this awesome budget deck with actual competitive potential, especially after some relatively minor upgrades! As always, thanks for watching, my wizards! Elves vs Inventors is the final Duel Deck. Ever. The series has been discontinued and this is the final installment. As such, it casts a pall of added scrutiny on Elves vs Inventors. Did Wizards truly go all out on this farewell duel deck or were they already out of gas to begin with? Is this perfect for the duel deck collector, a fitting final chapter to the duel deck saga, or perhaps it’s just evidence of why the product line has been discontinued. I’ll examine in detail the gameplay balance and enjoyment, cards for collectors, interest for new and established players, and ultimately whether or not this product is worth it from those perspectives. Let’s take a look!

Zombies is resilient. While not the fastest deck (it is firmly in the midrange camp) it can recover from removal rather easily. Zombies thrives in metagames rife with creature decks. It can take them out rather effectively while also establishing a board state where your Shepherds and Polluters will win the game in short order. If you’re looking for something different and something that is sure to get new cards every few years, you can look into Zombies. Let’s take a look!

This video will examine what Planeswalker Decks are, what they contain, what purpose they serve, and who they are for. Although this video will use as its examples and illustrations the Amonkhet Planeswalker Decks, unless significant changes are made to the product, it can be applied to future decks as well. Please Note: This video is intended as a guide to the product for brand new Magic the gathering players. For a more detailed and critical analysis from the Perspective of an active Magic player, be sure to check out my “Is It Worth It” video for Planeswalker Decks linked in this video’s description. What Is A Planeswalker Deck? Planeswalker Decks are a product intended to teach brand new players the basic strategy of magic the gathering, the game's settings, its characters, and to simply provide that very first 60 card deck to begin their Magic journey with. These decks are for one person and one person only: brand new players with no or perhaps almost no Magic cards whatsoever. They are meant as a first purchase and a first deck. Again, the analogy of training wheels is one I feel is most apt. In conclusion, Planeswalker Decks are an acceptable first purchase for a brand new Magic player, however they are far from a vital one. They can make a gift for a younger player just getting into the game, and they can serve as a beginner’s deck for fun and practice, but there’s a lot of other options out there, including Deckbuilder’s Toolkits, Rookie and Battle Decks, And Simply Attending a prerelease. Speaking critically, once a brand new player has purchased one Planeswalker Deck, they have no need to ever do so again. Established players do not ever need to purchase a Planeswalker Deck. Again, my more detailed critical analysis from the Perspective of an active player can be found in my “Is It Worth It” video for Planeswalker Decks linked in this video’s description.

Possibly intended to lure Pokemon Go! Players into the TCG with the iconic symbols of teams mystic, valoor and instinct, these decks come both at the end of a year full of 20th anniversary celebrations. But are these cards to be coveted by collectors and competitors alike, or has nostalgia finally hit a point of oversaturation. Let’s take a look. The first thing to point out is that none of these decks are not Standard legal, they are Expanded decks, but not particularly competitive ones at that. There are, however, some good cards here, but the decks as a whole aren’t going to be very successful unless to do a major upgrade, or, much more likely, just strip for parts taking the cards you need and discarding all the rest. In addition to the Legendary birds, each deck contains the appropriate Eevee evolution from Plasma Freeze. While many of the individual cards within them are played in Standard, some of which even being staples, this supplemental set is meant to encourage and support the extended format, and thus nothing is being added to standard through it. Of the Eevee evolutions, Flareon with its Vengeance attack is probably the most appealing, but again, while there are a few decent cards and of course the holo energy, the Pokemon themselves are unplayable in standard. For expanded, while I am happy to see the format supported, there’s not really any in demand cards here. An no, still no Shaymin reprint. Featuring Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres and other cards largely from Plasma Storm, one can’t help but draw the comparison between these decks and the recent Pokemon Go craze. It actually makes a lot of sense to try and capitalize on the excitement for Pokemon Go and direct potential new players to the card game through doing things like a legendary birds set. Unfortunately, the execution here leads much to be desired.

These are the best of the best, even among the many, many boxes that have received A grades from me, these 4 stand hand and shoulders above the rest and The Professor’s Top 4 Picks. We played the clash royale best magic archer deck, and of course, Chief Pat played a rocket deck! Chief Pat was my kings cup 2 teammate, and I've always looked up to him. Chief Pat was the youtuber that I first started watching when I got into clash royale, and he's a great guy. This clash royale bridge spam deck has evolved to be more skillful; it has the highest skill-cap legendary card in the game: the magic archer. The magic archer is one of my favorite clash royale legendary cards, since it is so difficult to use & rewarding to master. This bridge spam deck has the bandit, battle ram, and dark prince for aggressive plays. It has ice golem, inferno dragon, and magic archer for defense. This deck functions off of counter pushes, and it destroys all of the giant prince metagame. I hope you guys enjoyed the vid, my clash royale pro tips & tricks, and I'll see you in the arena! Everybody loves Eldrazi, but building a whole deck full of them would be pretty expensive, right? Not so! We can have fun with Eldrazi for as little as $20 or so, and still manage to be pretty competitive! Of course, we can't play Ulamog for that price, but we can still play a whole host of awesome 'Drazi. When we're able to trade for, afford, or pull Ulamog and friends, the deck is easily modified! Our basic philosophy is to play a Mana-producer on turn 2, then either a Surrak, an Eyeless Watcher, or a From Beyond on turn 3. All 3 sequences can lead to 6 Mana on the 4th turn, enabling us to cast a 6-mana threat like Conduit of Ruin, Oblivion Sower, or Drowner of Hope. All three of the turn-4 plays can, in their own ways, lead to an even bigger play on the next turn (Sower and Drowner both ramp you in different ways and Conduit both Tutors and lowers the cost of the big guys). If we have a Surrak out when we play any of these turn-4 threats, we can immediately swing with any of them! It's especially good to play Drowner of Hope in this situation, as we can tap down at least two of the opponent's creatures and swing for 10 with the Surrak and the Drowner! Not only that, but there are also ways to cast Bane of Bala Ged on turn 4, and when you have a Surrak out, he can immediately make them exile two of their permanents (it's often 2 lands, but on turn 4, this is devastating)! Those are only some of the tricks this deck employs! Lots of fun synergies and powerful turn sequences in this one! NOT huge Eldrazi Guys (24) 4 Blisterpod 4 Whisperer of the Wilds 4 Leaf Gilder (or Rattleclaw Mystic if you've got 'em) 2 Call the Scions 4 Eyeless Watcher 3 Surrak, the Hunt Caller 3 From Beyond Huge Eldrazi Guys (10) 2 Conduit of Ruin 1 Oblivion Sower 2 Drowner of Hope 3 Bane of Bala Ged 1 Breaker of Armies 1 Endless One Lands (26) 1 Sanctum of Ugin 1 Blighted Woodland 1 Fertile Thicket 1 Evolving Wilds 1 Spawning Bed 4 Yavimaya Coast 1 Island 16 Forest Sideboard 3 Jaddi Offshoot 2 Plummet 4 Display of Dominance 2 Naturalize 3 Titan's Presence 1 Gaea's Revenge Total Cost: $22.80 Final Score: 59 Creatures: 29 Other Spells: 5 Green: 24 Blue: 2 Colorless: 10 Lands: 26 Landbase Contains 21 GREEN SOURCES, 5 BLUE SOURCES, and 4 OTHER/COLORLESS SOURCES.
