Automatic Storage Management (ASM) is a feature that has be introduced in Oracle 10g to simplify the storage of Oracle datafiles, controlfiles, logfiles and backups. ASM will be used as the file system and volume manager for Oracle Database files (data, online redo logs, control files, archived redo logs), and the Fast Recovery Area. NOTE: ASMLib in the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. ASMLib – Linux specific ASM library and its associated driver. The Oracle ASMLib kernel driver is now included in the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. No driver package needs to be installed when using this kernel. The oracleasm-support and oracleasmlib packages still need to be installed. The oracleasm-support can be installed from Oracle Linux ISO image. For other Linux flavors could be found here – (Download section for particular Linux distribution) The oracleasmlib can be downloaded from ULN (Unbreakable Linux Network), subscription is required. Non-subscribers are free to use the similar package built for RHEL on their Enterprise Linux machines, which we will use in this tutorial. Action plan: 1. Installing Oracle Enterprise Linux and creating virtual hard disks in VMware for ASM disks 2. Creating recommended OS groups and user for Grid Infrastructure 3. How to Move a Datafile in Oracle Database - Part 1

01:32
Dozens of free Oracle tutorials at http://skillbuilders.com/free-oracle-tutorials. See Part 2 (the demonstration) of this tutorial at http://skillbuilders.com/How-to-Move-Datafiles-Oracle-12c. How do you move a datafile in an Oracle Database? Well, it just got a lot easier in 12c! Watch this free video tutorial - OCM John Watson of SkillBuilders will demonstrate both techniques, 11g and 12c. There are many reasons to move a datafile in an Oracle database. Here are just a few: Renaming datafiles to a standard Moving from one file system to another Converting from file system storage to ASM Changing from SAN to NFS storage In 11g, we need to take the tablespace offline, meaning downtime. Argh! In 12c, all that is required is ALTER DATABASE MOVE DATAFILE; this is an online operation with zero downtime. Even "critical" files such as the files associated with the SYSTEM tablespace can be moved online. Consider the ease of migrating to ASM this provides! This also functions in an Active Data Guard standby environment. And, there are syntax options that allow you to keep or delete the original file. Very cool stuff.

Zero downtime ASM diskgroup migration to another SAN storage

18:58
https://dbagenesis.com/p/oracle-11gr2-rac-for-beginners In your environment, you might require to migrate ASM disks from one storage to another storage. The activity is very simple and straight forward. You can follow bellow procedure in order to migrate ASM disks without any downtime. High level disks migration steps: Get the new disks mounted on RAC nodes - from new SAN storage Create ASM disks from the newly mounted disks Add the new disk to existing diskgroup - where you want to replace old ASM disks Wait for re-balance to complete Drop the old disk from the diskgroup Wait for re-balance to complete Done!

Performing Oracle 11g ASM Data Migration

17:34
Performing Oracle 11g Automatic Storage Management - ASM Data Migration Purpose of ASM Data Migration Alternatives to ASM storage include file systems, raw disks, and SAN configurations. ASM includes a number of benefits over these storage alternatives, including performance optimization, redundancy protection, and load balancing. You do not need to obtain a third-party Logical Volume Manager because ASM manages disks for you. Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) databases benefit from ASM because it provides ready-made shared storage. If a database currently uses a storage system other than ASM, then you can migrate all or part of the database into ASM, thereby simplifying database administration. You can also migrate a flash recovery area to ASM. Native operating system commands such as Linux cp or Windows COPY cannot write or read files in ASM storage. Because RMAN can read and write ASM files, you can use RMAN to copy datafiles into and out of ASM storage or between ASM disk groups. This technique is useful if you need to store backups on user-managed disks.
