The plexiglass cover pushes the counterweight forward, adjusting the tracking force, in our case to 2.4 grams. For heavier cartridges, a separate counterweight (75g vs the 65g original) is needed, which is an optional extra sold separately.

Industrial Design Products | How to communicate the "use"

This video features a product I worked on called "Muse". It's a brainwave sensing headband. This video talks about how to communicate the use of a product when it's a completely unfamiliar product to the average person. I wanted to use "Muse" as an example because it represented a product that the majority of end users will have never seen before, let alone know how to use. Graphic Design at RISD to Product Designer at Yelp [Design titles]

15:58
WTF do "designers" in Tech do? Through interviewing designers with different design titles in the Silicon Valley (and beyond), I aim to create clarity around this very issue. From Product Designers, UX Designers, Interaction Designers, Comms Designers, UX Researchers, and beyond -- what are the similarities, differences or even nuances in our job titles? -- Interview 04: Tim Plummer, Product Designer What an amazing interview! I’m so happy to share Tim Plummer’s story on how he got into Product Design. Tim and I have a lot in common: We both studied Graphic Design in college, we both worked as interns at Yelp while we were in school to then work at Yelp full time after school, AND I can now say we have both worked on the Yelp for Business Owner’s product! Tim touches on his experiences transitioning from Graphic Design to Product Design as well as what it’s like to work as a Product Designer. ⇢ www.behance.net/tplummer ⇢ www.synergy.rocks ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• PARTNERSHIPS I'm so excited to be partnering with Springboard for their UX Career track! Some of the most influential designers in the world

06:04
Did you know that we also create affordable promo videos? Contact us at [email protected] to get a quote Once we get to see a finished design or product, we often don’t think about the creative process and the designer behind it. But we should. Why? Because the design influences us way more than we think. So who have been the most influential designers in the world over the years? Let’s take a look. Saul Bass In the world of the design, Saul Bass is kind of a legend. Some of his most famous works include posters for hit films like West Side Story and Vertigo, as well as title sequences for Spartacus, Psycho, and Anatomy of a Murder. Several major companies recognized Bass’ talent and hired him to create their logos. For example, Kleenex, Girl Scouts, AT&T, Quaker, and many more. Rob Janoff You know the small apple that you can see on the back of iPhones, Macs, iPods, and iPads? The man behind this design is Rob Janoff and today, the whole world knows and easily recognizes the logo he once created. Stefan Sagmeister Stefan Sagmeister is the New York-based graphic designer. He designed album covers for some of the biggest music icons of all time including The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Lou Reed, and many more. He has designed branding, graphic, and packaging for all kinds of clients, not only for popular rock bands. On his client list, you can also find names like HBO, the Guggenheim Museum, and Time Warner. Paul Rand Paul Rand is one of the pioneers of the modern graphic design. He created logos that are internationally recognized. His client list includes but is not limited to IBM, UPS, ABC, NeXT Computers, and the Yale University. Milton Glaser Milton Glaser is one of the most celebrated graphic designers in the US. Some of his best-known works include the psychedelic Bob Dilan poster, the I ♥ NY logo, and the Brooklyn Brewery logo. Did you like this video? Do you want to see more videos like this? Why you may not sketch much as an Industrial Designer

05:17
Some people may be surprised to learn that as a professional Industrial designer, you could spend little of your time drawing and sketching. In this video, you will learn: - The amount of drawing & sketching done on the job will depend entirely on the products you are designing - the types of products that typically require more sketching - the reason why some products require more sketching than others This video was inspired by an article on Core 77 called "Questioning the cult of sketching." Self-Centering Knob Mechanism: Product Design Sample from Engineering Consulting Firm, Porticos

00:11
The Porticos engineering team focused on a self-centering knob mechanism that has the desired feel for an appliance user. For example, if you are turning on your stove to a desired heating level, intuitively, you would turn the knob to an appropriate angle or position on the dial or readout on a display. The knob then returns to the center or neutral position, and the user can reduce the heating by a similar rotation in the opposite direction. The self-centering mechanism about the knob’s center of rotation was the key design challenge. The knob was required to have the same feel for each direction of rotation and must “self-center” softly without noise, overshoot or bounce about the center. The user may also want to “feel” an increase in torque related to the angular position of the knob. The rocker design shown in the video demonstrates this successfully.

Create the Perfect Design Portfolio for Your Job Interview

07:02
If you work in learning and development, you have an automatic advantage walking into any job interview. Why? You know how to tell a story. You tell a story every time you step in front of a class, develop an e-learning course, or work in instructional design. A job interview is just another story. You’re telling your prospective client or employer what you’ve done in the past, keeping in mind which details are going to be most important to them. You focus on the plot points most interesting to your interviewer. And you bring a portfolio that is a visual representation of your story. Here are some tips to help you assemble your design portfolio. Your design samples are not the main focus of your job interview. You are. Know your background and know what kind of story you want to share. Think of your portfolio as a prop. The secret to an amazing design portfolio is simple. Keep everything. At least, anything that shows your current level of skill and reflects your true value. Each time you prepare for a job interview, sift through your design samples and decide which pieces emphasize the most relevant plot points in your story. Learn about the organization that is interviewing you. Know their branding, the scope of the project you are being hired for, and try to understand what they most value. For example, is the project on a tight budget? Is the organization cutting edge and willing to spend extra time and money for creativity? Bring design samples to the interview that will allow you to talk about your past efficiency, or your amazing creative efforts. Bring more design samples than you need. More samples make for a more impressive portfolio. Organize your design portfolio so you can lay it out quickly in front of the client or employer. Here is what I use to organize my samples: http://amzn.to/2GwofjV Spread out the samples. Take at least half of the table. Encourage your interviewer to pick up samples and look them over. Let the client or employer wander through your portfolio and pick up what is most interesting to them. Tell your interviewer the story of whatever pieces they pick up. Don’t be afraid to guide the interviewer to particular pieces and explain why you feel those samples are relevant to what they hope to accomplish with you. In the past, have you produced confidential or proprietary content? Figure out what you are legally allowed to include in your portfolio. Your design portfolio is evidence of your skills. Even if you can’t show a full course or a high quality print of a final product, show what you are allowed to show, tell the interviewer that the sample is a fragment or a low res copy if that’s the case, and still use that sample to breathe life into your story. What if you didn’t do all of the work on a design you’re showing? Just tell the interviewer and explain your role. Sometimes I show visuals I didn’t personally design. Why? Because they’re associated with training programs or curricula I developed. I tell the prospective client or employer that I didn’t design the poster they’re holding, but it was part of XYZ Training Program I created. I’m establishing credibility by showing my interviewer proof that I really developed that training program. They’re holding a piece of it. If you haven’t been working as a designer or developer long enough to have lots of client work, feel free to create your own samples branded in the style of a specific company. You can even create examples using the branding of the organization that is interviewing you. Just be sure to tell your interviewer that you created the samples for personal development rather than for a client, if that is the case. I used to work in retail L&D, and they say that if you can get a customer to pick up a product, there’s a significant chance they will buy it. You can apply that concept to your design portfolio. Go to the job interview prepared to hand your work to a prospective client and tell them who you are as a designer or developer. How To Write A UX Case Study

09:13
How do you write a successful UX case study and what elements make up an effective UX case study? In this video I explain... ____ IF YOU LIKE MY CHANNEL, HERE ARE SOME NEXT STEPS... 1) FREE EBOOK: "How to start a career in UX" https://bit.ly/2xuYDDE 2) FREE PORTFOLIO REVIEW: Get my thoughts on your portfolio... https://bit.ly/2KuhpxM ____ 1 - Planning Before you start to think about the design or format, write the case study out as a word document. This will help you focus on the story you want to tell, without being distracted by the other details - formatting, design, imagery etc Create a rough template for your case studies to follow, this will help give them a consistency. Think of the template much like you would a story, with a beginning, a middle and an end. This might include: - Beginning: Providing the background of the project - Middle: Process (your approach, challenges, solutions) - The end: What was the end result? 2 - Context An effective case study let’s the reader know from the very beginning the context of the project. Giving context allows allows the reader the get a general picture of the project without having to read the entire case study. -What was the product or service being created? (project) -Who was it for? (client) -When? (date) -What was your role? -In what capacity did you work? (freelancer, in house, agency) 3 - Process While it’s useful to focus on the bigger picture of a project for context (the client), the main point of the case study should be to highlight your competencies as a UX designer The best way to demonstrate your competencies is to lead people through your process, Your process should highlight your systematic approach to problem solving as a designer, and also show how you function both as an individual and as part of team As an example, a case study that is focused on your approach might show the following: - Researching your audience - Creating research deliverables (user personas etc) - Wireframing a solution - Testing a solution - Iteration It’s also important to not leave gaps or leave things to people’s imagination. So for example, if you weren’t able to conduct user research properly (for whatever reason) at the beginning of a specific project, it’s better to highlight this, than just leave a gap. 4 - Readability & design The main focus of a case study should be the content, however, having said that, you want to make sure it is as easy as possible to read and understand for your user in a visual sense Make sure your typography is correct - so use a font for body copy that works for passages of text, and pay attention to line heights and lengths. Make sure you consider hierarchy and rhythm in terms of the spacing of type and graphic elements. Done properly, this will create a pleasing visual experience for the user. Break content collections into sections and within those sections, break your text into chunks so it’s easy to scan and jump around without getting lost. Remember, people on the web want to scan for content, not read a book. Much like the 1st point, aim to establish a visually recognizable template with your design and formatting. This repetition and consistency will make it easier for your reader to understand what’s going on sooner. 5 - Summarise A good case study doesn’t just end with the final deliverable. Try to summarise the outcomes of the project, both in terms of the bigger picture for the project team and client, but also for yourself as an individual. For example: - What’s happening next with the project/client? - How has your work impacted them? - What have you learnt? - Is there anything that could be improved in terms of your individual - - Approach or the overall project process?

QFD (Quality Function Deployment): Illustration with practical example (PART-1)

13:04
The next very important tool or concept I have illustrated in this video is “Quality Function Deployment (QFD)”. This is also called as “Matrix product planning”, “Decision matrices”, and “customer-driven engineering.” QFD is a focused methodology for carefully listening to the voice of the customer and then effectively responding to those needs and expectations. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a process and set of tools used to effectively define customer requirements and convert them into detailed engineering specifications and plans to produce the products that fulfill those requirements. As I have explained in the video, here is a link for QFD related information on Quality-one site: https://quality-one.com/qfd/ I had explained this tool with various terms in it and detailed procedure to use this tool by example, which will be very easy to understand. I am sure you will like it.

Product Design: Why Accessibility Needs To Be Prioritized In Product Design

18:35
It’s a new month and with it a brand new theme for our upcoming Build episodes! When designing products we often think about usability: how easy to use a product is. But we often overlook another aspect of product design: accessibility. So all this month we’re going to dive into accessibility. One reason accessibility gets overlooked is because we think it’s a challenge to prioritize it given a company’s size and resources. We may think accessibility makes sense for a big company, but a startup that is getting off the ground just doesn’t have the resources to incorporate it. Well, actually that’s not true... In fact, accessibility maybe just the differentiator you need when it comes to product design that is going to give your product a competitive advantage and increase adoption! And in today’s episode, we’re going to explore what accessibility is, why it’s important for any size company to incorporate, and show you how to do an accessibility audit for your product. To help us out, I've invited Laura Allen, who is the Accessibility Program Manager at Google for Chrome and the Chrome operating system. You’ll learn: - What accessibility is and how it’s different from usability - How accessibility influences user adoption of products - How companies will benefit by incorporating accessibility into product development process, priorities, and core values - Examples of common accessibility issues that impact all of us at various moments in our lives - How to do an accessibility audit for your product and the 4 important principles to consider each time Here are some additional resources to checkout that Laura mentioned in the video: - Web Content Accessibility Guidelines: https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/ - Vox Media Accessibility Checklist: http://accessibility.voxmedia.com/ -- Build is produced as a partnership between Femgineer (http://femgineer.com/) and Pivotal Tracker (https://www.pivotaltracker.com/). 5 Tips for System Design Interviews

08:19
Here are 5 Tips for System Design interviews. They are helpful when preparing for a System Design interview. 1) Don't get into details prematurely 2) Avoid fitting requirements to a set architecture in mind 3) Keep it simple, stupid! Remember to look at the big picture and avoid too many hacks when solving. 4) Have justifications for the points you make. Don't use buzz words or half hearted thoughts in your design. 5) Be aware of the current solutions and tech practices. A lot of solutions can be purchased off the shelf which simplify implementation. You should be able to argue for a custom implementation with it's pros and cons. Have these on the back of your mind during you interview, and all the best! Here are three major points evaluated during the interview: (1) Clarity of Thought a) Express your thoughts in a clear manner. b) Justify your decisions. Critical reasoning and argument are key to a successful software design. c) When faced with a problem, use standard approaches to mitigate it. For example, say you are faced with an availability problem. State that replication and partitioning help increase availability in general, and move on to offer a solution. d) Don’t make points without thinking them through. Half-hearted attempts at solving problems are frowned upon heavily. (2) Knowledge a) Stay up to date with the current solutions in the market. This includes products and design practices. If NoSQL is being adopted left right and center, you need to be aware of it. b) Know when to pick a solution vs. building something custom. If you name a product, you should be (generally) aware of the features it provides. c) Design practices enable you to meet custom requirements. Examples are decoupling systems, load balancing, sticky sessions, etc… (3) Flexibility a) Switch your targets as the requirements shift. If the interviewer wants to know about one particular part of the system, do it first. b) Never have a set architecture in mind. We all try to fit requirements to a system, but only after it has been shaped by the initial ones. A rigid attitude creates a brittle architecture. It will break before you do. c) Take a step back at times to make adjustments to the general architecture. Being focused on one part can narrow our vision and bloat those areas. There will be components which can be extracted out and extended to the rest of the system. Cheers! BA Product Design: Anglepoise Model Making Final 2017

03:08
BA Product Design Stage 1 students start the year by creating a model of the Original 1227™ Anglepoise desk lamp as their workshop induction project. The aim is to ‘learn through doing’ fundamental practical and technical skills required in their future role as practicing product designers. Workshop skills employed on this project include sanding, milling, sawing, lathing, casting and spray painting a variety of materials at their disposal. Each student creates a unique presentation model of the classic Anglepoise® lamp. This project was conceived, organised and delivered by the 1st floor Model Making workshops and their technical team. Congratulations to Etienne Thevenet for his technical excellence and sophisticated paint technique, to Bradley Williams for his application of striking geometric pattern to multiple components, to Teetaj Senajak for an impactful modernist all-over splatter effect applied with remarkable control, and to Kit Ying Hui for a well-coordinated composition using soft transitions in colours that are right on trend. These 4 students received Awards of Excellence from Central Saint Martins and a Type 75™ Mini desk light to further inspire their studies at home. Film by Gareth Johnson

3Doodler Start Product Design Pen Set from WobbleWorks

01:41
Design useful products with the 3Doodler Start Product Design Pen Set! The 3-D pen heats eco-friendly plastic that is safe to touch and easy to use! Make one of 14 projects in the activity guide or design your own! See what TTPM created in this video review! For full review and shopping info► https://ttpm.com/p/25319/wobbleworks/3doodler-start-product-design-pen-set/?ref=yt Product Info: There's a whole new way to doodle and create with the 3Doodler Start Product Design Pen Set. It comes with the tools kids need to make 14 different 3-D products or create their own 3-D designs. Kids simply use an ergonomically shaped pen and 96 strands of colorful eco-plastic to doodle, draw, and design in 3-D. The activity guide gives you space to practice using the pen before you go on to creating useful projects such as a cell phone holder, a picture frame, a watch, a pencil holder, and more. The patterns for these are all provided in the booklet, though for some, you may need other tools, such as scissors or a small balloon. Using the pen is pretty easy to do. Once it's charged, turn it on and wait for the red light to turn green. That means you're ready to click the big button once and feed a strand of plastic into the pen. The pen heats up the plastic so that it comes out as a softer material that you can doodle with.
