How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen

13:07
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Making sense of MVP (Minimum Viable Product)

11:47
Adapted from Crisp's blog by Henrik Kniberg. Explaining his MVP drawing. This drawing shows up all over the place, in articles and presentations, even in a book (Jeff Patton’s “User Story Mapping” – an excellent read by the way). Many tell me the drawing really captures the essence of iterative & incremental development, lean startup, MVP (minimum viable product), and what not. However, some misinterpret it, which is quite natural when you take a picture out of it’s original context. Some criticize it for oversimplifying things, which is true. The picture is a metaphor. 3 Awesome Minimum Viable Products (MVPs)

Before diving in. let's establish some ground rules for a "proper" MVP It's got to be Minimal It's got to be Viable And it's got to be a Prod... Actually No, it does not need to be a Product. (I'll be showing you a great example of a "non-product" in a minute or two.) Some have argued that the word "Product" in MVP is unhelpful. Steven Cohn has made a strong case for the word "Experiment". I agree. But for now let's stick with the "P" and temporarily re-define it to.... Pre-meditated. Meaning that the MVP must be a deliberate attempt to learn about the market. This rules out cases that look like MVPs in retrospect, but were really full products that - to everyone's surprise - developed into something big. Let's get going. No. 3 - Buffer ------ Buffer is a application that makes it easy to share content on social media. Here's what they put on the their site. A test, certainly. But it falls short of an MVP in my opinion. Their next test was better. They slotted this page in-between the other two pages. Now visitors to the website are not just saying "This is interesting" They're saying "I want to BUY this". Okay, there's nowhere to input your credit card details. But anyone who got this far was at least prepared to think about parting with their money. As co-founder Joel Gascoigne said: "After this result, I didn’t hesitate to start building the first minimal version of the real, functioning product." Minimal - certainly Viable - yes Pre-mediated - check Buffer's current valuation is something close to $400 million No. 2 - Dropbox ---- Dropbox, as I'm sure you know, is a file synchronisation service. Edit a file on your desktop... ... and seconds later its updated on all of your other devices. Rewind to the early days. The team - entirely composed of techies - had the basic synchronisation working. That was the easy bit. The hard bit was going to be to achieve the same trick on pretty well every platform: Mac, Windows, iPhone, etc. Given that the team was all techies, you'd have put money on them diving straight in. But CEO Drew Houston did something surprising. He made a video. The video - just three minutes long - demonstrated the synch process end to end. But it was more than just a demo: it was full of techie in-jokes... designed to appeal to early adopters. It worked like a charm In Drew's words: “It drove hundreds of thousands of people to the website. Our beta waiting list went from 5,000 people to 75,000 people literally overnight. It totally blew us away.” Minimal - Yes Viable - Not a product that could be used, but a product that could be demonstrated. Pre-Meditated - Yes Dropbox went on to do quite well. It's current value stands between $5 and $10 BILLION. No. 1 - Zappos ---- It's 1999. Co-founder Nick Swinmurn wanted to build an online store for shoes. But would people use it Here's how he went about finding out. He popped down to lis local shoe shops he went into the shops and... ... I sh!t you not... he PHOTOGRAPHED PAIRS OF SHOES! The photos were uploaded to a super-simple website. If someone clicked on the button to buy a pair Nick would pop down to the store and... BUY THE SHOES! Zero infrastructure. Zero inventory. Minimal - definitely Viable - This time it's not even up for discussion. Most definitely: real customers; real money changing hands; real shoes! Pre-meditated Check. Zappos went on to do quite well: it was acquired by Amazon in 2009 for a cool $1.2 billion. Your thoughts, please! ---- Buffer, Dropbox and Zappos. Three of my favourite MVPs. What do you think of my choices Any you disagree with Let me know in the comments. And I'd also like to he https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPJoq_QVsY4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjCCS3DxZRo

My Art // Accepted RISD & PARSONS Portfolio

12:54
This video was meant to be filmed months ago.. but y'all know me.. I wanted to get this up because there aren't too many videos around where people showcase their full college accepted art portfolios- notably for RISD and Parsons School of Design. When I was an applicant, I found videos like this very helpful (at least for my anxiety at the time) so I do hope that prospective RISD and Parsons applicants find this informative! I applied to a total of 3 colleges in my senior year of high school, (Rhode Island School of Design, Otis School of Art and Design, and Parsons School of Design). All of the pieces featured in the video were sent in my college application, though some pieces are not shown and were only included in my Otis application. But my ENTIRE portfolio for RISD is up on here! Nothing left out. I didn't talk too much into the actual application process, and I didn't give as much advice as I wanted to. This video is more about showing my portfolio, and if needed, I can put another one up specifically talking about the HOW of applying to art schools. Any questions, just feel free to ask below. Use this Example to Write a Project Brief

05:50
Download the free Guide to Project Planning: http://bit.ly/2ezQ13v At its core, a project brief should communicate your project approach and the process your team will use to manage the project according to scope. If it’s handled with care and great consideration, a good brief should act as an agreement on project goals, scope, major deliverables, milestones, timing, activities, process, and even resources needed to deliver your product. If you take the time to create a good process around how your project brief and plan is built, and you consider all of those factors, you can create a great plan that will work for everyone. With the right amount of background information on your project’s scope and requirements, and with a good level of input and collaboration with your team and your clients, you can make a solid, workable plan that will guide everyone through your project, and it doesn’t have to be difficult to create. To many people, a project plan is a dry document that lists dates. To people who are invested in your project, the plan is the project guide that will dictate how you will get to project milestones, decisions, and eventually project completion. At a minimum, a project plan answers some basic questions about the project. Look at it this way: your plan should educate any reviewer— coworkers and clients included—on the logistics of the project. They trust that you’ve got this, so when reviewing the document, they truly believe that you’ve considered every possible risk. And if you have, it feels good to know that you’ve done a good job and you’re trusted. The first step in creating a good plan is writing up a good project brief to go over with the client. We’ve put together an example of a project brief in our free “Guide to Project Planning“, for you to download and use. 4c Design - Outsourced Innovation

01:41
An Introduction to 4c Design. In this very exciting time of change and rapid development, when companies are being asked to innovate and satisfy a new audience of socially critical consumers, it can all be a little overwhelming. This is where 4c come in… Product design engineering consultants are professional innovators, working in fertile surroundings, where new ideas can flourish. Quickly. Many companies already use this service and can immediately see the benefits of outsourcing, because budgets, timescales and deliverables can be set and managed by the consultancy, leaving the company to concentrate on core business. It’s simply embracing the logic, that if someone can do the job more efficiently, quicker and more cost effectively, then throw them the ball.

Rapid Prototyping 1 of 3: Sketching & Paper Prototyping

07:32
Mariam Shaikh and Melissa Powel talk about sketching and paper prototyping. Have you ever struggled with how to get from an idea to a high fidelity prototype? Every design has to start somewhere and even at Google we often start with low fidelity prototyping options such as sketching and paper prototyping. After all, the fidelity of your prototype should match the fidelity of your idea, so stop worrying and start sketching. Subscribe here ➜ http://bit.ly/JustOneDimeSubscribe If I was asked, "What is the #1 most important thing to teach a new Amazon seller?" without hesitation I would reply, "How to private label your product so that no one else can sell it." This is the heart of building passive income on Amazon. Private labeling means you did something to the product to make it uniquely your brand that no one else has rights to sell. Private labeling can be done on numerous levels, and one level that I did not mention in this video is informational private labeling, where you add a manual or how-to tips to your product--information that you personally wrote, so that no one else can mimic your product. Here are the main levels of private labeling your product on Amazon: First Level: - In your listing title, add "By [Your Company Name]" - Upload your logo as one of your product photos. Make sure it is not the first photo or the last two photos. Second Level: - Have your logo printed on a sticker that you attach to your product or to the packaging. - Have your logo printed on the product or the retail packaging of your product Third Level: - Accessorizing. Add accessories to your core product that no one else is adding to theirs. A powerful way to achieve this which makes it extremely hard for competitors to compete with you is by adding a training manual or instruction tips that you personally wrote. Fourth Level: - Trademark your company name and logo. You can apply for trademarks in numerous countries simultaneously here: http://www.wipo.int/madrid/en/ Brand Registry: When you register your brand with Amazon, no one else can edit your listing and it also makes it much more difficult for competitors to claim that your product is "not authentic." Three steps to take to be prepared for applying for the Brand Registry https://sellercentral.amazon.com/brand/catalog-brand-application/create?: 1. An image of your product packaging with branding visible on the packaging. 2. An image of a product with your branding visible on the product itself. 3. Link to an active website that displays your brand or products.

17 Incredible 3D Printed Objects

08:42
From beautiful and unbelievable instruments that actually work to even things like an incredible 3D printed pizza made by NASA! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr # 10 3D-Printed Ear You’ve seen 3D printing make fashion garments and body prosthetics, so it’s not too much of a leap to imagine a 3D printed organ. Scientists at Princeton University designed this bionic ear that can actually hear even better than human ears. The 3D printed cells and nanoparticles with a small coil antenna create the cyber ear that can be installed onto a real human and hear radio frequencies a million times higher than our own ears. # 9 3D-Printed Cast Jake Evill was a recent graduate of Victoria University when he broke his hand and was stuck with an arm cast that he found “archaic.” So he designed a cast for the millennial: a 3D printed, lightweight, washable, and breathable. It lets in air and prevents that age-old feeling of gross itchiness and suffocation the usual plaster casts come with. Plus, they just look super cool. # 8 3D Printed Pizza Try explaining to someone from 10 years ago that NASA funded a 3D printing project to print pizza. Well, that’s the reality we are living in. The company known as BeeHex was commissioned by NASA to develop palatable food for astronauts’ deep space journeys to Mars. The printer can create specific flavors and toppings and even shapes based on scanned .JPEG files to keep those bored astronauts appeased on their years-long journey. Humans aren’t scheduled to make any trips to our sister planet until the early 2030s, so we’ll probably be seeing these printed pizzas at theme parks and novelty restaurants until then. # 7 Shakuhachi Flute The Shakuhachi flute is a beautiful Japanese flute from the ancient Edo period that is classically made from a bamboo shoot. In 2016, you can now 3D print one out of stainless steel with matte or gold finishes and an intricate dragon design. You can own this ancient instrument for as little as 240 dollars. # 6 3D Fetus 3D scans of your unborn fetus can be a little confusing to look at or understand. Now, you can get a 3D print of your fetus to hold and touch and see. For as little as 1275 US dollars a Japanese company will create a small sculpture with a software called Biotexture. # 5 3DVarius Violin If you’re into instruments at all you’re probably aware of the Stradivarius Violins and string instruments renowned for their well-made instruments. The 3Dvarius violins brings that model to the modern age with a slick 3D printed polymer design and funky synthetic sound. While it is based on the Stradivarius violins, it’s goal was to be it’s own unique shape and have it’s own unique sound. #4 Tampon Magazine Here’s something I’m sure none of us thought would exist: a Tampon Magazine. It’s meant to make you have fun and feel cute storing your tampons in a hyper-femme bullet style box, letting you shoot ‘em out whenever you need. It isn't really space efficient or practical but it is a way to bring something fun into what is arguably the worst time of any lunar cycle. #3 3D Printed Medical Models Surgeons and medical practitioners often have to practice procedures on dummy models or cadavers, but as you can imagine those options are either slightly inaccurate or expensive and a limited resource. Now, with 3D printed models practice dummies are easier to come by AND more accurate which is great for patients and surgeons alike. # 2 3D Printed Buildings When you think about 3D printing, you usually imagine printing little gadgets, lifehacks, and little things that make your life easier. If you take that to its logical conclusion, you might wonder if we'll ever have 3D printed buildings and housing. Well, we do, and they were printed and constructed by WinSun in China. These two buildings were constructed from parts entirely made with specially made 3D printing technology including the plumbing, wiring, and entire foundations. # 1 3D Printed Camera Lens This camera - including the lens - was made completely with a 3D printer, and it actually works! Camera lenses are made from either acyrlic or sandblasted resin, and it has all the moving parts that allow you to change aperture, load and unload film. The photos that come from this 3D printed camera aren’t exactly crisp or super pristine, but they have a dreamy quality about them that you would expect to come out of a handcrafted camera.

How To Make Digital Drums | Samples Sound Like Vinyl [Sound Design Sunday]

Learn how to make digital drums and sample sound like they came from vinyl records using Reason 9. In this tutorial Greg Savage shares a simple sound design technique you can use to add warmth to your kicks, snares, hats and drum breaks. In short, this is utilizing IR (impulse responses). The use of impulse responses isn’t a new technique by any means, but it is one that is often overlooked (or not talked about as much) in the hip-hop community. It's not you. Bad doors are everywhere.

05:32
This video is about doors. Joe Posner investigates, with some help from 99% invisible, a wonderful podcast. Check them out here: http://www.99pi.org Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO There's a door on the 10th floor in the Vox Media office I hate so much. You probably know one of these too. But it's not our fault. And luckily, Roman Mars of 99% Invisible magically arrived in my cellphone to send me on a cross-country journey to find out the incredible surprises behind this common complaint: Don Norman started complaining about doors over 25 years ago. Doors shouldn't need instructions – the shape of them can guide you through just fine. So why do so many doors need instruction manuals right on the side of them? When most people complain about something, nothing happens. Don Norman is not most people – he's a psychologist and cognitive scientist. Don Norman thought about, and wrote about his complaints so incredibly thoroughly that he changed the world. 99% Invisible's Roman Mars helps tell the story. Product Sourcing Why It's Important to Order Samples - Quality Products Get Reviews

14:35
Hey guys, in the wake of the new Amazon Policy regarding sellers no longer being able to give away products in exchange for reviews, it's going to be really important to not only source unique and interesting products, but to also source quality products. While it's going to be tougher to drive sales and gain organic reviews, than just giving away free products and watching them roll in. This is not the death of Amazon. YOu can still sell on Amazon and make money. It's just going to be a bit harder. Your going to need to source fun and unique products, and not only that but even once you settle on a product, your going to want to buy samples from a number of different sellers and find the best product. In this video we look at 3 different models of Yeti Mug Handles. The one which I found to be the best quality by far, didn't have the most reviews, however it did have the best review score on FakeSpot, a site which ranks how good quality or honest the reviews are. The two other products which had more reviews, I found to be not as good of products, and also when we ran them through fake spot, both were scored as an "F" meaning most of their reviews were low quality and purchased reviews. Here Are The Products We Looked At... Magnum Steel - My Favorite http://amzn.to/2e77ddd Find It By The Bay - Pink Handle - Second Favorite http://amzn.to/2ersJxz Bevworks - Black Handle - Least Favorite http://amzn.to/2e95OUu I think this example illustrates, how that if you have a good quality product, sales and reviews will come organically. Design of Experiments in Process Validation - Adhesive Bonding Process Validation Example

15:03
Adhesive bonding processes are often used within the medical device industry for manufacturing various medical devices and instrumentation. The process includes the device, an adhesive, and any ancillary equipment required to support the process (fixtures, heat sources, timers, etc.). The bond strength is often crucial to assuring proper functionality and patient safety. This study will serve as an example of using DOE in process validation. This study is not intended to be a model for all adhesive bonding processes, as each application will vary by requirements and additional sources of variation. However, it should serve as an example to guide similar efforts through the process validation procedure.
