RetroPlay: Video Game Walkthroughs
Breath of Fire III
After a long journey of nearly limitless setbacks, the party finally makes their way to Angel Tower. Garr, however, has a secret he has been keeping from the party about why exactly Ryu may die when he learns about his people.
Major note: Make sure you've got your masters set up the way you want them before finishing Angel Tower as you won't have access to them for a bit when this dungeon is finished. If you have any that you have a few levels that are needed to learn their skills then I would suggest going back to Mt. Zublo and getting them really quick (as I did with Momo and Peco in this video).
Another thing, unequip your accessories from everyone except Ryu and Garr and the party member you intend to use in this dungeon (which I highly suggest bringing Momo so you can grab the Diamond Ring). Unequip the other party member before the final staircase of the dungeon (where you have to move the three large stone blocks).
Welcome to yet another annoying as heck dungeon. Here the Cerberus are particularly fond of using their Howling ability constantly. This ability has a somewhat high chance of inflicting confusion on your entire team and it can be quite devastating (I had Garr nearly wipe my entire party with three critical hits in a row on my practice run of this dungeon).
Not only are those a pain, the Phantoms will hit Lucky Strikes quite often, and even worse they will use Death which can instantly kill a party member, so keep that Talisman and Diamond Ring on.
Finally, to finish the trifecta, our good friend the Specter makes a return appearance here to slowly nip away at your AP the entire dungeon.
Other than that, the dungeon is pretty short. You'll be using Garr to move around the large stone blocks in order to make platforms to cross.
Once you reach the 3rd screen where you have to move three large stones to form a pathway you will want to remove your accessories from your third party member (keep Ryu and Gar equipped though) before you head down the next flight of stairs.
Also, don't be a big dummy like me and leave Ryu equipped with the Flare Sword before heading down...you'll see why shortly...
After descending that final staircase, Garr asks that he and Ryu go on alone. After examining the tablets on around the large structure in the middle you find one with Garr's name on it. He then explains to you his true intentions for bringing Ryu to the tower...he intends to kill him.
Things aren't stacked against you this time as they were in the Contest, Ryu can practically wipe the floor with Garr now (as long as you don't have Ryu equipped with the flare sword or have enough AP to keep a dragon form for longer than two turns..) which he does so, however he doesn't finish him off.
After a scene, Ryu will transform into Kaiser Dragon and flee the tower.
When you regain control you find out that Ryu went back to the mines where he was first found in the game, and years have passed since the events at Angel Tower.
Garr has tracked Ryu down again (the choice you're given here has no effect on the game as far as I know), but this time asks Ryu to come along with him to find some answers as to why the Dragons didn't fight back against the Guardians, and why the Urkan God wanted them to be exterminated, which starts the second half of the game.
In the next segment, we'll be leaving the Mines and heading out in search for answers.
